Abstract:This paper presents a summary of the author's recent work on the configuration of spatial structures. To better satisfy architecture and engineering requirements, the paper introduces a technique of reconstructing freestyle 3D objects with grid space structures. With this technique, irregular and complex configurations can be easily modelled, which has a great potential in modelling of sculptures and bionic structures. Then several new types of deployable structures, which are based on linkage mechanisms including Bricard linkages and double chain linkages, are proposed. The kinetic behaviour of these deployable structures is investigated by geometrical analysis. And their possible applications in retractable roofs are also explored. Meanwhile, the paper proposes a practical application of structures with changeable configurations – a novelty erection technology based on expandable mechanisms. Finally, the paper presents some new advances in form-finding of tensegrity structures and shape control of tensegrity structures.

Abstract:Traditional museum space design is generally limited to cost and engineering volume, and follows the conventional unified design process of large-scale space fixtures, isolating the design contents of space hard decoration and internal soft decoration and display, and even flood lighting intelligence, lacking unified overall consideration and response. The disjointed design in the early stage led to a large number of space contradictions in the exhibition placement and actual use and operation after the completion of the hard installation and delivery. The intervention of new media art changes the traditional exhibition form. At the same time, the traditional public space design process also begins to change because the exhibition activity of new media art forms has many requirements such as technology, process, material, sound and light, and even environmental psychological effect on the space form and scale. Based on case studies of different characteristics, this paper summarizes the systematic design methods of new media art's involvement in the hard installation of museum exhibition space from three dimensions of spatial layout, spatial form and spatial scope.

Abstract:Fragmented practices are common in construction industry due to the traditional procurement system and poor adoption of advanced technologies and approaches for construction projects. Building Information Modelling is an emerging technology and able to transform the conventional practice. It can create a collaborative working platform for a project, particularly during the design stage. Therefore, the research aims to improve the conventional design practices by incorporating the BIM technology in addressing the design collaboration for a complex building. A case study was adopted from a complex building in Beijing, China. The data were collected and observed during the design process. A framework was developed to explain the design collaboration process. The findings show the duration of the design has significantly shortened and also improved the design performance in the project. The research renders an important insight into promoting BIM-based design collaboration in the construction industry.

Abstract:: This study introduces the theory of spatial narrative to explore its application in improving the problem of homogenization of museum display. The research combines non-linear narrative and multimedia technology to enhance the interest and interactivity of the display, and enhance the emotional resonance and participation of the audience. By analyzing the existing problems in the museum, this paper shows the design technique of space narrative theory and its application effect in the museum of China. The study also examined the practical use of virtual reality techniques in the London Museum of Natural History, proving that these techniques can optimize access paths and enhance the educational experience. Therefore, the application of spatial narrative theory can significantly improve the display effect and make the natural museum a more attractive place for learning.

Digital design and construction of a weaving structure

Abstract:The article presents a digital design and construction system for weaving structure that integrates architectural and structural design. Influenced by architects such as Zaha Hadid and Frank Gehry, a lot of contemporary architectural designs employ great deal of digital technologies, and explore complex spatial expression and construction of organic curvilinear forms. Despite large amounts of effort that is dedicated into study and optimization of such design, its construction is still expensive. Supported by the contemporary digital technologies, the following study proposed a new weaving structure system, which is composed of long elastic members that are weaved together. The new structure system can be used in construction of continuous curving surfaces of complex topologies. The benefits of this system are as follows: Firstly, it is a design and construction system that has a wide adaptation to different curvilinear geometries. Secondly, the final form is developed from the counterpoises between interacting forces of the weaving elastic members; therefore the result of this structural form-finding process is more rational comparing to a designed geometry that has not been structurally optimized. Thirdly, it greatly reduces the tedious three-dimensional location and fabrication work in the construction of complex curvy surface, and significantly reduces the construction cost.

Abstract:With the rapid growth of economy and urbanization, the development of cities has gradually focused on promoting the culture and image of cities and meeting the spiritual needs of the people. Therefore, cultural public buildings play an important role in urban development. However, the process of urbanization has led to the gradual saturation of urban architectural space. Cultural public buildings must not only meet the development requirements of cities, but also have the sustainability of development advocated by society and the diversity of use functions. On this basis, this article takes spatialism as a design approach and urban art gallery space as a design carrier to summarize the characteristics of green, low-carbon and sustainable development pursued by urban development under the spatialism design idea. This article discusses the overall situation from large to small, from far to near, summarizes the corresponding design ideas, and uses a large number of cases to support the relevant design ideas, aiming to explore the research on the architectural space design of art galleries that is both in line with the sustainability of urban development and in line with the aesthetics of modern people in architectural space.

Abstract:The cultural memory of the formation of urban culture in the post-industrial era has driven the development of post-industrial landscapes. Post-industrial culture needs to be conveyed through functional spaces, and among various functional spaces within post-industrial landscapes, post-industrial landscape structures hold significant research value. Through a literature review, three main issues in current research on post-industrial landscape structures have been identified: disputes regarding design styles, scattered design and analysis logic, and the lack of specific case-based analyses. Therefore, this study introduces the Metaphor-Deconstruction-Empowerment (MDE) design logic and utilizes the Truss Red Gallery (TRG) in Caofeidian, Hebei, as a research subject for specific analysis, thus addressing these three research gaps. In the analysis process, this study provides specific analyses of the metaphors reflected in TRG's design symbol language and exterior colours. It also examines the deconstruction manifested in the overall space and design details. Furthermore, it analyzes the empowerment showcased in the expansion of architectural space functions, the application of parametric design techniques, and the use of green and low-carbon technologies. Finally, this study conducts an overall logic analysis of the MDE design logic in TRG's design and, in conjunction with the actual construction process of TRG, provides insights into future research directions for the MDE design logic.

Abstract:Chinese calligraphy and Suzhou classical gardens exhibit unique and distinctive formal attributes and layout styles. This paper examines the interrelationships from a spatial perspective, using classical gardens such as the Humble Administrators' Garden, the Lingering Garden, and the Master of Nets Garden, alongside Yan Zhenqing's Three Manuscripts (颜公三稿), as illustrative examples. From the theoretical stance of "Heterogeneous Homology", this investigation assesses the comparability between calligraphy and garden design. It highlights the shared spatial features of "Emptiness-Substance" and "Denseness-Sparseness", analyzing their specific applications within each realm. Furthermore, the "Correspondence and Guidance" is fulfilled to effectively integrate the spatial boundary within their respective domains. The findings reveal profound similarities in spatial construction between calligraphy and garden design, highlighting the traditional Chinese aesthetic pursuits of emptiness, distance, and externality. These findings affirm the ancient Chinese pursuit of the natural philosophical concept of "the unity of nature and human". Consequently, it is proposed that future design and urban spatial planning should emphasize the application of the spatial techniques and cultural meanings embedded in these arts. This approach aims to provide a multidimensional and detailed interdisciplinary perspective on future research concerning Asian architectural culture and art history.

Abstract:This article explores the advent of the China Design Museum (CDM) in Hangzhou, placing the architectural design of its physical museum space, its collections, and exhibitions in dialog with Chinese governmental policy. Drawing on oral histories conducted with CDM staff and supported by exhibition observation and analyses, this study demonstrates how the CDM concentrates much of its activities on the Bauhaus, following the acquisition of some 356 Bauhaus-related objects purchased in 2011. The article exemplifies that while the institution’s curatorial approach may appear transnational at first, its methodology is in fact imbued with contemporary national concerns, which have significantly informed the museum’s strategy towards design history.

Abstract:Based on the characteristic of technical exhibitions, we systematically analyze the location, function, audience and meaning of these exhibitions in this paper. Moreover, we discuss on the technical exhibition's exhibit planning, exhibit design and exhibit scheme. Specifically in the exhibit scheme, we discuss the advantages of Internet of things and sensing technology when using in the technical exhibitions. Abstract:With the increasing demand for urban public space construction, the use of public art has become increasingly important. At the same time, museums are gradually emerging as an indispensable "third space" in the city. Therefore, it is necessary for us to think deeply about how to achieve a complementary and mutually beneficial relationship between museums and public art. This paper takes the spirit of place as theoretical guidance, combines examples of domestic and foreign museums, and specifically analyzes the design path for museums to build public art to shape the spirit of place. This paper studies how museum public art can narrate strategies from external spaces, use media to restore internal scenes, fit in with the natural environment, and explore the "third space" of urban spirit is constructed from four aspects of regional context. This paper proposed that with the intervention of public art, museums should comprehensively consider multiple factors such as design, overall environment and correlation, pay attention to the overall correlation between design and system environment, and focus on the audience's sense of identity and belonging to build the spirit of place.

Abstract:Three courtyards nine halls is an important cultural asset in eastern Zhejiang. This paper takes Three courtyards nine halls dwellings in the eastern part of Zhejiang province of China as the research object, collecting data with field research, measurement, interviews and other research methods, to analyze the spatial characteristics and construction culture of traditional dwellings. Research findings: First, influenced by the natural environment, artificial environment and social environment, three courtyards nine halls is a complex of residential buildings with san-ho-yuan as a unit, extending vertically and horizontally. Second, with the influences of the Confucian culture, the architectural layout is symmetrically distributed along the central axis, and the architectural space presents a high degree of consistency. Third, the architectural complex was formed by the same clan. The last one is that the architectural form and culture show consistency, which implies the idea of harmony between man and nature, the farming and studying hand down from generation to generation. On the one hand, with the acceleration of the urbanization process, living conditions have been greatly improved. On the other hand, due to the weak awareness of residents’ protection of traditional residential cultural assets, lack of systematic study on traditional residential construction methods, construction techniques and space culture, new buildings are not in harmony with traditional dwellings, therefore, traditional dwellings are seriously damaged. This paper discusses the sustainable development of traditional residential culture by studying the construction and environmental elements of Three courtyards nine halls, taking the residential space as a principal part to analyze the characteristics, functional attributes, organizational principles, order, and sense of place.
