Abstract:Yurong (literally, imperial visage) is a term for portraits of emperors and to whichrespects were paid, sacrifices offered and obeisance made, and so those who owned them could be eithermembers of the royal family or those who served them as officials. This paper discusses the portraits of ancestralemperors and empresses of the Mongol-Yuan royal family, who did not necessarily have these titles whenthey were alive, and elucidates the cultural differences, vestigial cultural traces and evidence of dating in theproduction, form and technique of these works. The paper also describes the yurong of earlier times and theYuan dynasty yurong of non-royal family members.
