Frugal Innovation: An Emerging Paradigm in and for Emerging Economy

Abstract:Innovating in emerging economies has raised high concerns for their significant differences from classic innovative modes. The concept of 'frugal innovation', which emphasizes the idea of 'do more with less for more people', has been proposed to try to explain innovative phenomena emerging in emerging economies. Meanwhile, some theoretical frameworks have been built to guide practices of frugal innovation. Yet the literature is charac-terized by a diversity of concepts, processes, theoretical frameworks and practices that can be confused and contra-dictory. As a result, it is necessary to review literature and construct a holistic framework to facilitate theory de-velopment and innovative practices conducting in emerging economies for people from bottom of pyramid. For the purpose mentioned above, we introduce the origin of frugal innovation. Then, all concepts or terms relevant to connotation of frugal innovation are analyzed. Based on that, we review the theoretical frameworks of frugal in-novation proposed. After that, from a comparative perspective, we identify the characteristics of paradigm of fru-gal innovation. Finally, we draw conclusions and give research agenda.
