Process and Trends of China's Higher Education：A Coordinated Development with Urbanization

Abstract:According to Human Capital Theory, higher education development is correlated with urbanization. Since the establishment of People's Republic of China, the scale of higher education and the level of urbanization have undergone four stages: overlapping synchronous growth, partially overlapping allometric decline, partially overlapping allometric growth and partially overlapping winged growth. Higher education scale and urbanization among provinces present inter-provincial variance, ranging from synchronization to out-of-synchronization. The within-province differences are obvious, while the regional pattern also show that eastern, central, western, and northeastern parts of China are different each other. According to education plan at the national and provincial level, and the main functional areas program across the country , the scale of higher education and urbanization should concordant the inter-province differences will continue, regional differences will be reduced.
