Abstract:Through comparison of phoneme, tone, intonation, rhythm and juncture in English and Chinese phonologies, and the analysis of the phonetic errors often made by students in learning English, this article arrives at the conclusion that the differences between the phonological systems of the mother tongue and the target language, and the influence from pronunciation habits in mother tongue are the main cause of the mistakes made by FL learners. Constructive measures are put forward to help solving the problem.
A Comparative Study on English Stress Patterns between Chinese and American University Students

Abstract:English is a typical stress-timed language.Stress is the main phonetic means to distinguish meanings.Chinese is a typical syllable-timed language with tones fixed to each syllable to distinguish meanings.As a result,the huge distinction between the two languages causes great obstacles for Chinese learners to acquire idiomatic English.This paper aims to find out misuses of Chinese learners' stress patterns of English based on the read-aloud data by 30 Chinese university students and 10 American university students.It is found that native speakers employ exactly the same stress pattern in a tone group with an unmarked nucleus while learners always assign extra stresses.When it comes to a tone group with a marked nucleus,the majority of native speakers are still in accordance with each other except several cases of accent displacement while the learners' stress patterns are in a mess ranging from deviations of nucleus,extra stresses to omission of stresses.The research has certain value in acquiring correct English stress patterns.

Abstract:Tonality refers to the system of intonation choices that a speaker has when associating complete intonation patterns with a text. This study investigates the tonality patterns in Chinese EFL learners' read speech. The recordings of 45 Chinese students and 8 British native speakers were annotated and analyzed on the computer with PRAAT, and then compared in order to find the non_native_like aspects in learners' oral performance. Findings show that learners differ from native speakers in 1) the frequency of boundary markers, and 2) the realization of some tonality constraints. The study has important implications for China's EFL pedagogy as well as for the improvement of rating rubrics for China's oral English tests.

Abstract:Prosodic speech characteristics are important in the evaluation of both intelligibility and naturalness of oral English proficiency levels for learners of English as a Second Language (ESL). Different stress patterns between English and Mandarin Chinese have been an important research topic for L2 (second language) English speech learning. However, previous studies seldom employed children as ESL learners on this topic. Since more and more children start to learn English in the primary school in China, the current study aims to examine the L2 English rhythm of these child learners. We carefully selected 273 English utterances from a speech database produced by both native speakers and Mandarin child learners, and measured the rhythmic correlates. Results suggested that vowel-related metrics (e.g. nPVI) are better indexes for L2 rhythmic evaluation, which is similar for ESL adults; pause-related fluency is another indication for prosodic assessment, especially for child ESL learners. This investigation could shed some light on the rhythmic difficulties for Mandarin ESL child learners and provide some implications for ESL prosody teaching for school children.
L2 English Rhythm in Read Speech by Chinese Students

Abstract:L2 English speech produced by Mandarin Chinese speakers is usually perceived to be intermediate between stress-timed and syllable-timed in rhythm. However, previous studies seldom employed comparable data of target language, source language and L2 interlanguage in one investigation, which may lead to discrepant results. Thus, in this study we conducted a contrastive investigation of 10 Chinese students and 10 native English speakers. We measured the rhythmic correlates in passage readings of Mandarin and L2 English produced by the native Chinese subjects, and those of English by the native British speakers. Comparison of the widely used rhythmic metrics %V, Delta C, Delta V, nPVI, rPVI, VarcoV, and VarcoC confirmed that Mandarin Chinese is a highly syllable-timed language. Results suggested that vowel-related metrics were better indexes to classify L2 English rhythm produced by Chinese speakers as being more syllable-timed than stress-timed. Analysis showed that vowel epenthesis, non-reduction of vowels, and no stressed/unstressed contrast could contribute to the auditory impression of syllable-timed rhythm of their L2 English. This investigation could shed some light on the Chinese accent of L2 English and provided support to facilitate the rhythmic acquisition of stress-timed languages for Chinese students.
Acoustic analysis of English tense and lax vowels: Comparing the production between Mandarin Chinese learners and native English speakers

Abstract:This study investigated how 40 Chinese learners of English as a foreign language (EFL learners) differed from 40 native English speakers in the production of four English tense-lax contrasts, /i-ɪ/, /u-ʊ/, /ɑ-ʌ/, and /æ-ε/, by examining the acoustic measurements of duration, the first three formant frequencies, and the slope of the first formant movement (F1 slope). The dynamic formant trajectory was modeled using discrete cosine transform coefficients to demonstrate the time-varying properties of formant trajectories. A discriminant analysis was employed to illustrate the extent to which Chinese EFL learners relied on different acoustic parameters. This study found that: (1) Chinese EFL learners overemphasized durational differences and weakened spectral differences for the /i-ɪ/, /u-ʊ/, and /ɑ-ʌ/ pairs, although they maintained sufficient spectral differences for /æ-ε/. In contrast, native English speakers predominantly used spectral differences across all four pairs; (2) in non-low tense-lax contrasts, unlike native English speakers, Chinese EFL learners failed to exhibit different F1 slope values, indicating a non-nativelike tongue-root placement during the articulatory process. The findings underscore the contribution of dynamic spectral patterns to the differentiation between English tense and lax vowels, and reveal the influence of precise articulatory gestures on the realization of the tense-lax contrast.
The Transfer of L1 Acoustic Cues in the Perception of L2 Lexical Stress

Abstract:A study was conducted to investigate the use of acoustic cues by Chinese learners of English in stress perception. The study included the stress judgment of synthesized disyllabic nonsense tokens and an oddity test using real English words from carrier sentences. The study also manipulated F0 difference on disyllabic nonsense words in 5 level, while the duration and intensity cues remained consistent on the syllables. Disyllabic words like Latmab, nizdit, and tetsep were developed during the study. The study also had two groups of participants to listen to the tokens and an experimental group of 68 CE. It was observed that the difference between CE and NE in stress perception caused by their reliance on acoustic cues. This experiment gave same results with Vietnamese learners and Japanese learners.
The Output and Input Frequency Effects on L2 Acquisition of English Prosodic Features

Abstract:This paper reports a study in which 16 college students as L2 learners of English classified into 4 groups were asked to listen at different times to 8 dialogues read by a native speaker and to read the dialogues at different times afterwards followed by interviews.Results show that input frequency does have a positive effect on Chinese EFL learners' prosodic segmenting,while output frequency doesn't;there is no significant difference between input/output frequency and intonation focus;no significant difference between input/output frequency and tones was found in the present study.Nucleus placement(information focus),listing,vocatives,and adverbials of time and place at the end of an intonation unit seem to be the most difficult features for Chinese EFL learners to acquire.Possible reasons were also explored,which suggest that explicit instruction should be given to the students in order to raise their awareness and to help them realize the stress rules and tone patterns of English.

Abstract:An analysis procedure of Chinese intonation is tentatively proposed from a global perspective. This procedure starts from an observation of the interaction among three prosodic parameters and the hierarchical systems of production by looking at three continuums of utterances, followed by developing a system of acoustic and perceptual based features which can be further applied to the analysis of various types of intonation. This procedure is demonstrated by investigating into the five-syllable utterances produced by a male speaker. This pilot study suggests that the hierarchies of both duration and intensity might go up in a non-linear way in a speaker's mind, while the degree of pitch measured in semitone increases in a linear way. The selection and combination of global features indicate the restriction coming from both extrinsic (the communicative principle of explicitness) and intrinsic factors (the constraint of physical realization).

Abstract:This article explores Chinese university students' ability to differentiate between different English accents, their learning preferences, and attitudes towards different accents using a combination of qualitative (questionnaires and interviews) and quantitative (subjective projection tests) methods.Additionally, the study examines differences in accent evaluation among students with varying majors and educational levels.The results show that students generally have a strong comprehension of both local and standard English variants, and their learning preferences are affected by factors such as their major, learning motivation, and practicality.Overall, students have a positive attitude towards the nine English variants studied, with English majors having a higher evaluation of non-standard English variants compared to non-English majors.Graduate students tend to have higher requirements for the authority and formality of English variants.This research is significant in enriching the theoretical knowledge of future English variants in China, promoting respect and tolerance for English accent diversity among Chinese university students, and advancing English teaching construction in China.
Prosodic Transfer: A Comparison Study of F0 Patterns in L2 English by Chinese Speakers

Abstract:A comparison was made among the fundamental frequency (F0) patterns of continuous speech in English, Mandarin Chinese and L2 English produced by Chinese speakers.Ten adult native Chinese speakers were asked to read narrative text written in both English and Chinese.The comparative analysis of 300 sentences was performed in the following aspects: F0 mean, pitch range, pitch change rate and pitch change amount.It is found that in terms of both pitch range on the phoneme level and pitch change amount on the utterance level, L2 English speech by Chinese subjects displayed a significantly larger value than the English speech by native speakers.Moreover, the same Chinese subjects demonstrated still a larger value in these two pitch-related variables in their Chinese speech.The dynamic characteristic of L2 English can be attributed to the negative transfer of L1 Chinese.The findings can shed some light on the understanding of the difference in F0 patterns between a tone language and a non-tone language, and can also provide some implications for L2 speech learning.

Abstract:The native language will have a negative transfer on the acquisition of second language. Dialects, as a branch of Chinese, also have an influence on English acquisition. The perception of consonants is one of the important foundations of English learning. This study will adopt discrimination as an experimental method to investigate whether there is a significant difference in the influence of different dialects on the perception of English consonants. Three major dialects in Jiangsu province will be taken as a study case to verify the hypothesis that there is a significant difference on the perception of English consonants in different dialects. This study will fill the gap in the overall research on the impact of three major dialects in Jiangsu province on the perception of English consonants, help English language learners with dialect background to reduce the influence of dialects on them and provide some teaching key points to teachers, especially for English language learners in Jiangsu province.
Acoustic Features of Prosodic Boundary by Chinese Learners of English As a Second Language

Abstract:The production and perception of prosodic boundary have been well studied in English, but the research regarding to English as a second language (L2) is sparse. It has been shown that Chinese and English employ different acoustic features to mark prosodic boundary in production. Thus, this study aims to find out whether the Chinese learners of English employ the same strategy to convey prosodic boundary in English as the native speakers do. Ten pairs of syntactically ambiguous utterances composed of two or three food items were designed, with 10 pairs of filler utterances half randomized together. Ten speakers (5 males and 5 females) from Shanghai who passed the annual national examination CET (College English Test) Band 6 were asked to read the utterances. The results showed that, similar to the native speakers, Chinese learners also use pre-boundary lengthening, pause duration and pitch reset to signal the prosodic boundary in English. However, their pitch contour of the pre-boundary syllable is falling under boundary condition, and is rising under non-boundary condition, which is opposite to that of the native English speakers. This result will have an implication in L2 English teaching and learning.
Production of English Lexical Stress by Inexperienced and Experienced Learners of English

Abstract:A study was conducted to investigate the placement of stress and its phonetic cues on the American speakers and Mandarin speakers. The study also focused on how learning experience can improve English learner's ability to signal English lexical stress. The study used sixteen native Mandarin speakers from Northern China as participants and assigned them English real-work reading and English-like non real-word reading. The eight participants in the study were inexperienced learners of English and six native English speakers from the US were selected for a control group. The study used 22 real English words differing in stress pattern and 22 non real English words with N/i/N/i+obstruent syllable structure. It was observed that Mandarin speakers can easily detect the pitch difference between stressed and unstressed syllables.

Abstract:English is a stress-timed language, for which sentence stress or prosodic stress plays an important role. It's then difficult for Chinese who are used to the syllable-timed rhythm to learn the rhythm of English [1]. In this paper, we investigate how to improve the rhythm evaluation based on the sentence stress for Chinese who learn English as a second language (ESL). Particularly, we explore some rhythm measures to quantify rhythmic differences among second language (L2) learners based on sentence stress. To relieve the dependency on labeled data of sentence stress, we predict sentence stress automatically utilizing a hierarchical network with bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory (BLSTM) [2]. We evaluate the proposed method based on the corpus consisting of 3,500 sentences recorded by 100 Chinese speakers aging from 10 to 20 years old, which was marked with the sentence stress labels and scored by three experts. Experimental results show the proposed sentence stress measure is well correlated with labeled prosody scores with a correlation coefficient of -0.73 and the automatic labeling method achieves comparable results with the method with gold labels.
Effects of Imitation Training Methods on Chinese EFL Learners’ Production of English Intonation

Abstract:Intonation plays an important role in speech intelligibility and is difficult to be acquired by L2 learners. Previous studies exploring L2 intonation have generally focused on the learners' intonational performance in perception and/or production tasks. Imitation has been known as one of the significant approaches for L2 learners to master intonation. Listen-and-repeat (LAR) and repetitive synchronous imitation (RSI) have been fully studied and applied before, while there have been fewer studies on delayed repeating task (DRT) and a lack of comparisons with other methods. The current study explored whether the three imitation training methods help Chinese EFL learners improve their production of English intonation. Sixty non-English majors were randomly divided into three groups for three training methods, i.e., LAR, RSI, and DRT. The results indicate that: 1) Chinese EFL learners' English intonation was improved immediately after the training regardless of training methods; 2) There were improvements in the three training methods regardless of their proficiency of oral English; 3) There was not extended improvement on selective question and enumeration in the retention test.

Abstract:Prosodic speech characteristics are important in the evaluation of both intelligibility and naturalness of oral proficiency for learners of English as a Second Language (ESL). Different f(0) movement patterns between native and Mandarin Chinese learners have been an important research topic for second-language (L2) English speech learning. However, previous studies have seldom examined f(0) movement patterns between lower-level and higher-level Mandarin ESL learners. The current study compared f(0) change patterns extracted from the same 20 English sentences read by 20 lower- and 20 higher- level Mandarin ESL learners, and 20 native English speakers from a speech database. Appropriate procedures were applied to ensure a more accurate estimation of f(0) values and to catch characteristic deviation in f(0) movement patterns of ESL learners. The results showed that lower-level Mandarin speakers displayed more frequent f(0) fluctuations and smaller standard deviation of intervals between f(0) peaks than both native speakers and higher-level learners. The special characteristic of many smaller "ripples" on pitch contours of lower-level L2 English speech resembles Mandarin Chinese f(0) movements, which suggests a negative transfer from the first language (L1) Mandarin. The findings can shed light on the assessment and learning of L2 English prosody by Mandarin ESL learners.
The Effect of Input on the Production of English Tense and Lax Vowels by Chinese Learners: Evidence from an Elementary School in China.

Abstract:In both American and British English, tense high vowels /i/ and /u/ show extreme positions of the tongue and lips in articulation rather than their lax counterparts /ɪ/ and /ʊ/. However, the tenseness contrast in English is taught to Chinese learners in classroom by most instructors as duration difference—/i/ and /u/ are longer than /ɪ/ and /ʊ/ respectively. The present study therefore examines English production of /i/ vs. /ɪ/ and /u/ vs. /ʊ/ by Chinese elementary students and investigates how L2 beginners actually realize the target vowels and how their production resembles that of their classroom instructors and talkers who recorded their teaching materials. The results show that the students differentiated /i/ from /ɪ/ and /u/ from /ʊ/ mainly in duration and marginally in F2 but not in F1. Their production was found closer to their English teacher’s than the textbook recordings’ and native English speakers’, suggesting the input from the teachers significantly affects the English production of elementary school students in China.
