Abstract:It is a controversial issue whether there is morpheme representation in the mental lexicon of Chinese. Based on Roediger and McDermott (1995), the present study examines false recalling of words not presented in Chinese word lists. It is found that the extra-list lexical intrusion in recall with Chinese word lists is greater than that with English word lists. Comparing the data of the two experiments and the morphology of the two languages, we conclude that the greater extra-list lexical intrusion in Chinese is due to the activation of both the words and their constituent morphemes while the subjects were processing the word lists. Our findings support the mixed representation model of Chinese mental lexicon.
