Abstract:Directionality is a controversial issue in interpreting research and teaching.Tradition-ally, researchers think it is better for interpreters to translate only from B language to A language in order to ensure quality. But more and more researchers hold that interpreting into B language is in-evitable and even a must.Interpreting into both directions is a fact in China, but English is the sec-ond language for both teachers and students, which poses a challenge for teaching interpreting into B.This paper studies the attitudes of students in the four MTI programs toward interpreting into both directions and the major difficulties they meet. The results show that 57.78%students prefer to in-terpret from English to Chinese and feel more confident of their performance;the biggest difficulty is"miscomprehension of original speech"in English-Chinese interpretation, in Chinese-English in-terpretation, it is"unable to judge whether the English is appropriate or not".The author analyzes the reasons and hopes to offer some useful suggestions for related teaching practice.
