Topos Analysis: Theory and Method

Abstract:In the past twenty years, topos analysis has increasingly gained attention, while it has been used mainly in the Germanspeaking countries.It focuses on argumentation strategies of specific social groups in a specific period for a specific discourse topic.By means of quantifying argumentation patterns, it investigates implicit social collective knowledge and thought patterns as well as their changes.Abstaining from pre-analytical assumption of social power structures, it differs from Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA).As a method of linguistic discourse analysis, it uses Foucault's theoretical framework merely in a selective manner, draws instead on Habermas'concept of discourse as rule based communication, inherits key elements of historical semantics as established by Busse, Teubert and Hermanns, and thereby constitutes its own distinctive theoretical system and analytical method.Based on an explanation and interpretation of the concept topos and its characteristics, this article illustrates the theoretical foundation and the analytical method of topos analysis and specifies its empirical application by introducing a representative study.
