Artificial Propagation and Embryonic Development of Yalu River Lamprey, <italic>lampetra Morii</italic>

Abstract:Lamprey is the most primitive jawless vertebrates.It is a 'living fossil' and ideal model animal for vertebrate origin and evolution study [1][2][3].In recent years, these eel-like fishes were highly valued by immunologists, since it was found that they possess a unique adaptive immune system-variable lymphocyte receptors for antigen recognition [4,5].Yalu River lamprey, Lampetra morii (L.morii), is usually about 22-28 cm long and 22-35 g in weight and is one of the three types of lampreys in Northeast China.On the one hand, because vitamin A content in the muscle of lamprey is much higher than that in the fat-rich meat, it may have important medicinal value for nyctalopia treatment.On the other hand, because of the deterioration of the ecological environment, the number of Yalu River lampreys has dramatically declined recent years.Therefore, the artificial propagation and breeding of this species is of interest and important.Here, we present its breeding and embryonic development process under experimental conditions for the first time.Sexually mature adults of Yalu River lampreys, L. morii, were collected in Hunjiang River of Yalu River branch near China-North Korea border in November.These individuals have an average length of 26.35 cm and body weight of 27.25 g at maturity.They are parasitic and landlocked lifestyle species remaining in fresh water.The larvae are fed on detritus and filamentous algae, whereas the adults are generally parasitic feeders that attach to other fish species.Once reaching sexual maturity, they will stop eating any food.So these sexually mature adults were raised without food in the lab and were changed into fresh water every 2 days.The water temperature was maintained at 18°C.By now, many lamprey species have been successfully bred [6,7].There is still no report on artificial propagation of Yalu River lamprey under experimental conditions.Early developmental features of this species are almost unknown as well.In this study, the Yalu River lampreys were bred successfully, and the embryonic
