On Impact of Local Air Quality on Tourism Cities in China：Based on 2005-2014 Panel Data of 135 Tourism Cities in China

Abstract:Haze pollution has worsened in recent years and the negative impact on the tourism industry has been gradually highlighted .The impact of local air quality on tourism development indicators has been studied in this paper based on a panel data set of 135 tourism cities in China over the 2005-2014 period . The results show that PM10 average concentrations doesn't have a negative and significant influence on the tourism development at the moment .Our additional empirical findings ,however ,indicate that among those 23 cities under great concern of media about the haze‐related issues ,the increasing strain of air pollu‐tion has constituted a threat to local tourism development ,that each 1 × 10-9 kg/m3 grow th of PM10 con‐centrations will lower domestic tourist arrivals by 0 .27% and foreign tourist arrivals by 0 .43% from 2013 , respectively .T he results show that this influence on the tourism has been restricted by the environmental disclosures .In the end ,the paper discussed the effective way to promote city tourism development under the severe air pollution from the perspective of the media disclosures .
