Abstract:Acid volatile sulfide(AVS) has shown its significance in controlling heavy metals partitioning between sediment and pore water, and in explaining the bioavailability of metal toxicants. The environments in landfill layer are analogous to that of marine sediments,so the ratio of AVS to simultaneously extracted metals(SEM) in landfill layer can be determinated referring to the analytical procedures of n(AVS)/n(SEM) in sediments.n(AVS)/n(SEM) in landfill layer is less than 5%.The surplus SEM that exceeds AVS is bound by other binding phases. For Cu,Ni and Zn AVS has priority to Fe oxides,Mn oxides,CO~(2-)_3 and physical sorbents;and for Cd and Pb,AVS has priority to organic matters,Mn oxides,CO~(2-)_3 and physical sorbents.AVS is favorable for keeping heavy metals in landfill layer.
