Abstract:The process of a continuous sand dust weather event in northern China from the 8th to 13th of March,2013 was analyzed with the weather research forecast-chemistry (WRF-Chem) model. The simulation study was based on the initial field and boundary conditions provided by FNL data of national centers for environmental prediction. The simulation results were compared and verified with satellite data and aerosol optical thickness data from the semi-arid climate observatory and laboratory. The results indicated that three sediment sources contributed to the continuous sand dust,i.e.the Taklamakan,Badain Jaran and Tengger Deserts.Dust mobilization happened three times in the Tengger Desert while two continuous sub-processes of sand happened twice in both the Taklamakan and the Badain Jaran. After dust mobilization in the deserts, dust aerosol was forced to transport to southwest and climb over the east of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, leading dust aerosol to be transported to the upper atmosphere. Two days later, without the direct and indirect radiative effect of aerosol and the wet deposition, dust aerosol arrived at 200 hPa and entered the lower stratosphere due to its strong ascending movement.
