Abstract:We present a derivation of a stochastic model of Navier Stokes equations that relies on a decomposition of the velocity fields into a differentiable drift component and a time uncorrelated uncertainty random term. This type of decomposition is reminiscent in spirit to the classical Reynolds decomposition. However, the random velocity fluctuations considered here are not differentiable with respect to time, and they must be handled through stochastic calculus. The dynamics associated with the differentiable drift component is derived from a stochastic version of the Reynolds transport theorem. It includes in its general form an uncertainty dependent subgrid bulk formula that cannot be immediately related to the usual Boussinesq eddy viscosity assumption constructed from thermal molecular agitation analogy. This formulation, emerging from uncertainties on the fluid parcels location, explains with another viewpoint some subgrid eddy diffusion models currently used in computational fluid dynamics or in geophysical sciences and paves the way for new large-scales flow modeling. We finally describe an applications of our formalism to the derivation of stochastic versions of the Shallow water equations or to the definition of reduced order dynamical systems.

Abstract: In a series of papers (see \cite{CDT02} and the pertinent references therein) the 3D Navier-Stokes-$\alpha$ model were shown to be a useful complement to the 3D Navier-Stokes equations; and in particular, to be a good Reynolds version of the latter equations. In this work, we introduce a simple Reynolds averaging which, due to the wall roughness, transforms the Navier-Stokes equations into the Navier-Stokes-$\alpha$ model.

Abstract:In 2001, Bertalmio et. al. drew an analogy between the image intensity function for the image inpainting problem and the stream function in a two-dimensional (2D) incompressible fluid. An approximate solution to the inpainting problem is obtained by numerically approximating the steady state solution of the 2D NSE vorticity transport equation, and simultaneously solving the Poisson problem between the vorticity and stream function, in the region to be inpainted. This elegant approach allows one to produce an approximate solution to the image inpainting problem by using techniques from computational fluid dynamics. Recently, the three-dimensional (3D) Navier-Stokes-Voight (NSV) model of viscoelastic fluid, was suggested by Cao et. al. as an inviscid regularization to the 3D Navier-Stokes equations (NSE). The NSV model is shown to be globally well-posed and has a finite-dimensional global attractor, making it an attractive sub-grid scale turbulence model for purposes of numerical simulation. In this paper we investigate the use of the 2D NSV model for use in algorithms for the inpainting problem. We also present some new theoretical results based on energy methods comparing the sufficient conditions for stability of the discretization scheme for the two model equations.

Abstract:An energy functional with bidirectional flow is presented to sharpen image by reducing its edge width, which performs a forward diffusion in brighter lateral on edge ramp and backward diffusion that proceeds in darker lateral. We first consider the diffusion equations as L-2 gradient flows on integral functionals and then modify the inner product from L-2 to a Sobolev inner product. The experimental results demonstrate that our model efficiently reconstructs the real image, leading to a natural interpolation with reduced blurring, staircase artifacts and preserving better the texture features of image.

Abstract:For the non-stationary linearized Navier-Stokes equations,a non-conforming finite element method of subgrid viscosity method is presented,where Crouzeix-Raviart nonconforming finite element is employed,and the Crank-Nicholson scheme is used for time discretization. Stability and convergence of the method is proved.The error estimation results show that the method achieves optimal accuracy with respect to solution regularity.The numerical results were given,which demonstrate the stability and convergence of the method presented.
Research on model smoothing in ray type migration imaging

Abstract:From the perspective of energy functional theory, based on velocity gradient, the smoothing formula for a velocity model based on partial differential equations is derived by the steepest descent method (Gradient method) , which can be used to solve the problem of the velocity model smoothed in ray type migration imaging. At the same time, considering the effect of the selection of threshold k in smoothness coefficient of partial differential equations on the velocity model, variations of spatial structure of the original velocity model are analyzed on a simple high-speed velocity model. By comparing the ray path and time field, it is proved that the smoothing of velocity model using partial differential equation is superior to convolution operator. Finally, the effectiveness of velocity model smoothing process using partial differential equation is verified by analyzing the migration imaging results on Marmousi and Sigsbee 2A original and smoothed velocity models.
Turbulence calculation based on the extended Navier-Stokes equations

Abstract:In this study, we propose a computational method for solving the turbulence problem of incompressible viscous Newtonian fluids based on the extended Navier-Stokes (N-S) equations. With some phenomenological observations and H. J. Kreuer's interpretation of the origin of viscosity, we make a hypothesis in the fluid flow that the shear process is accompanied by eddy formation. Considering the influence of eddy on convection and diffusion, the classical N-S equations have been improved to obtain the extended N-S equations. The extended equations are closed and the source of velocity fluctuations is explicitly considered as additional convection and diffusion. The extended equations are compatible with the classical N-S equations and are able to describe the laminar and turbulent flow in a unified way. In fluid flow simulations, the equations describing the mean flow quantities can be obtained directly from the extended N-S equations without any additional turbulence model. The flow over a cube placed in a channel was numerically investigated to verify the extended equation, these simulation results were in good agreement with the Large Eddy Simulation (LES) and experimental results.

Abstract:The finite-analytic numerical method is presented for discretization of three-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. In this article, a new 27-point finite-analytic discretization scheme is derived utilizing the superposition of the local analytic solutions of linearized hue-dimensional convection-diffusion equation. It is shown that the new 27-point finite-analytic numerical solution is computationally efficient and accurately simulates both convection and diffusion, due to the analytic nature of the solution, which provides an automatic, smooth, gradual upwinding of the three-dimensional convective effect.

Abstract:We present here a new image inpainting algorithm based on the Sobolev gradient method in conjunction with the Navier-Stokes model. The original model of Bertalmio et al is reformulated as a variational principle based on the minimization of a well chosen functional by a steepest descent method. This provides an alternative of the direct solving of a high-order partial differential equation and, consequently, allows to avoid complicated numerical schemes (min-mod limiters or anisotropic diffusion). We theoretically analyze our algorithm in an infinite dimensional setting using an evolution equation and obtain global existence and uniqueness results as well as the existence of an $\omega$-limit. Using a finite difference implementation, we demonstrate using various examples that the Sobolev gradient flow, due to its smoothing and preconditioning properties, is an effective tool for use in the image inpainting problem.

A Multi-Layer Grid Approach for Fluid Animation

Abstract:Real fluid phenomena often present multi-scale behavior, such as tiny splashes and foams in the ocean and small vortexes near the bank of a wide river, which requires sufficiently fine grids and long computational time in the simulation to get adequately resolved solution. We present a new method to address this issue by solving Navier-Stokes equation on multiple layers of grids with different resolutions or categories. The governing equations are solved on different layers in successive passes. And the velocity and pressure fields are synchronized between adjacent layers through the processes of prolongation and restriction. The multi-layer approach enables combining the respective advantages of various grid types, catching the multi-scale behavior of fluids and optimizing the computational resources. Two simple examples, the regular-tetrahedral and the coarse-fine bi-layer grids, are given to illustrate the powerfulness of the multi-layer framework.

Abstract:We consider numerical shape optimization of a fluid–structure interaction model. The constrained system involves multiscale coupling of a two-dimensional unsteady Navier–Stokes equation and a one-dimensional ordinary differential equation for fluid flows and structure, respectively. We derive shape gradients for both objective functionals of least-squares type and energy dissipation. The state and adjoint state equations are numerically solved on the time-dependent domains using the Arbitrary-Lagrangian–Eulerian method. Numerical results are presented to illustrate effectiveness of algorithms.

Abstract:For shape optimization of fluid flows governed by the Navier-Stokes equation, we investigate effectiveness of shape gradient algorithms by analyzing convergence and accuracy of mixed finite element approximations to both the distributed and boundary types of shape gradients. We present convergence analysis with a priori error estimates for the two approximate shape gradients. The theoretical analysis shows that the distributed formulation has superconvergence property. Numerical results with comparisons are presented to verify theory and show that the shape gradient algorithm based on the distributed formulation is highly effective and robust for shape optimization.

Abstract:In this paper, a divergence-free and pressure-oscillation-free projection method for solving the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations on the non-staggered grid is presented. The exact discrete projection method is used to compute the velocity field, which ensures the discrete divergence of the velocity field is zero. In order to eliminate the odd-even decoupling in the pressure field, a filtering procedure is proposed and applied to the pressure field. We have shown this filter recovers the grid scale ellipticity in the pressure field and the odd-even decoupling can be removed effectively. The proposed numerical scheme is further verified through numerical experiments.
Inferring Fluid Dynamics via Inverse Rendering

Abstract:Humans have a strong intuitive understanding of physical processes such as fluid falling by just a glimpse of such a scene picture, i.e., quickly derived from our immersive visual experiences in memory. This work achieves such a photo-to-fluid-dynamics reconstruction functionality learned from unannotated videos, without any supervision of ground-truth fluid dynamics. In a nutshell, a differentiable Euler simulator modeled with a ConvNet-based pressure projection solver, is integrated with a volumetric renderer, supporting end-to-end/coherent differentiable dynamic simulation and rendering. By endowing each sampled point with a fluid volume value, we derive a NeRF-like differentiable renderer dedicated from fluid data; and thanks to this volume-augmented representation, fluid dynamics could be inversely inferred from the error signal between the rendered result and ground-truth video frame (i.e., inverse rendering). Experiments on our generated Fluid Fall datasets and DPI Dam Break dataset are conducted to demonstrate both effectiveness and generalization ability of our method.

The results of simulations reveal remarkable fidelity, particularly with the Euler wavelets collocation method, showcasing its exceptional capability to depict intricate velocity components and pressure fields. Abstract:This paper proposes a new nonconforming finite difference streamline diffusion method to solve incompressible time-dependent Navier-Stokes equations with a high Reynolds number. The backwards difference in time and the Crouzeix-Raviart (CR) element combined with the P0 element in space are used. The result shows that this scheme has good stabilities and error estimates independent of the viscosity coefficient.

If the data ν and Open image in new window f(t) satisfy a uniqueness condition corresponding to the stationary Navier-Stokes problem, we then obtain the convergence of the non-stationary Navier-Stokes problem to the stationary Navier-Stokes problem and the uniform boundedness, stability and error estimates of the Euler time discretization for the non-stationary Navier-Stokes problem.

Abstract:A kind of interpolator, called the modified pixel-filled interpolator, is advanced for images enlarged the same integer times in lines as that in columns. The principle and the implement method in software and hardware of the interpolator are given. Comparing with the nearest neighbor interpolator, the bilinear interpolator, the pixel-exchanged-interpolator and the wavelet-based zooming methods, the effects of enlarged images with this interpolator are better according to the subjective and objective evaluation to the enlarged images. Its implementation in software and hardware is easy, and can be applied to all kinds of image zooming.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the three dimensional compressible nonisentropic fluid model of Korteweg type. We mainly present the vanishing capillarity limit of smooth solution to the initial value problem. Based on the uniform estimates with respect to the capillary coefficient κ, we show the unique smooth solutions of the three dimensional Korteweg model converges globally in time to the smooth solution of the three dimensional compressible nonisentropic Navier–Stokes system, as κ tends to zero. Also, we give the convergence rate estimates in H2-norm with respect to κ.
