Abstract:UV/acetylacetone(UV/AA)process has been proven as an efficient approach for the decoloration of dyes. However, limited work has been done on the sensitivity of the UV/AA process to co-existing matters, such as iron. In the present study,Methyl Orange(MO),a typical hard-degraded azo dye was selected to explore the influences mentioned above. The photo-degradation of MO was conducted under the variant combinations of AA with iron species in Fe2+,Fe3+ and Fe(Ⅲ)forms(Fe(AA)3 ).The pseudo first-order decoloration rate constants of MO in these photochemical processes followed such an order:UV/Fe2+/AA(0.010 min-1 )<UV/Fe3+/AA(0.012 min-1 )<UV/Fe(AA)3 (0.018 min-1 )<UV/AA(0.025 min-1 ).The results demonstrated that iron species acted as an inhibitor on the MO degradation in the UV/AA process.Based on the spectroscopic and degradation products analysis, the inner filter effect of iron and the competition between Fe3+ and AA for the complexation with MO,and the depletion of AA by iron were attributed to the inhibition effect of iron on the UV/AA process. The understanding of the effects of iron in UV/AA process also shed some light on the application of UV-based advanced oxidation processes for wastewater treatment.
