Abstract:This paper analyzes the performance of Turbo-RS concatenated codes based on the encoding schemes. The decoding schemes are given. One of the schemes is discussed in detail and simulated by computer. It is shown that Turbo-RS concatenated codes outperform only Turbo codes on performance and time complex.

Abstract:RS code is a kind of channel coding,which has the strong ability to correct the abrupt error.Turbo code combines the convolutional code and interleaving,is a new channel coding.At the same time,its decoding is to approach the maximum likelihood encoding by the softoutput and the iteractive ways.The performances of two kinds of coding and their concatenated code are analyzed.An application in the image transmission using concatenated code is offered.

On the Trellis Termination of Turbo Codes

Abstract:Turbo codes can achieve excellent performance at low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), but the performance can be severely degraded if no trellis termination is employed. This paper analyzed the role of the trellis termination in turbo codes, by analyzing the influence of the trellis termination on the distance spectrum. This paper presented an algorithm of implementing a kind of self-termination interleaver (STI), which could terminate RSC 2 as well on condition that the RSC 1 was terminated. The simulation verified the performance of STI for turbo codes, and the results show that the turbo codes with STI outperform the interleavers that could not terminate RSC 2 as well, and that turbo codes with trellis termination outperform those without trellis termination.

Abstract:This paper describes a novel stopping criterion for duo-binary turbo codes. The correlation between the two bit-level extrinsic information increased as the performance improved by the iterative decoding. In this way, the new method reflects a more reasonable solution for symbol-level decoding of duo-binary turbo codes. Simulation results showed that the proposal criterion was able to reduce the average iterative decoding number with a good error performance as compared to conventional criteria.

Abstract:Turbo codes employ iterative decoding through the exchange of extrinsic information (EI) on systematic bits between two parallel concatenated recursive systematic convolutional (RSC) codes. The El on parity bits can not be utilized during iterative decoding. In this paper, we propose a new type of iterative decoding scheme mapping parity bits of Turbo codes to a multi-dimensional (MD) QPSK which makes it possible to utilize the El on parity bits by iterative demapping. We use extrinsic information transfer (EXIT) chart to predict the system's convergence behavior and to help search good RSC codes and MD QPSK schemes. An analytical upper bound is also given to show the system's asymptotic performance in medium to high E-b/N-0 region. We introduce two special schemes and do simulations on them. Particularly, the scheme with Turbo code consisting of two 4-state (7, 6) codes and an eight dimensional QPSK outperforms Berrou turbo code with two 16-state RSC codes in water fall region and has similar error floor.

Abstract:A non binary concatenated codes system is proposed and evaluated, in which nonbinary low density parity check (LDPC) codes at high code rate (R=0.9) are linked to Turbo codes at low code rate (R=0.5) in series. Capability of correcting errors was improved by the LDPC codes at high signal noise rate (SNR) and by the Turbo codes at low SNR. The performance of the new system was analyzed on the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channels. The comparison is made between binary concatenated codes system concatenating binary LDPC codes and turbo codes, and Reed Solomon (RS) concatenated codes system concatenating RS codes and convolutional codes by simulation. The results show that the performance of non binary concatenated system and binary concatenated system is more better than RS concatenated codes system in correcting error, the performance of non binary concatenated system is better than binary concatenated system in correcting error, non binary concatenated system is more complex than RS concatenated codes system, but is more simple than binary concatenated system.

Abstract:It is well known that Turbo codes can approach Shannon limit, that is due to the using of interleaver which changes the weight distribution of the output Turbo codes. Therefor, Selecting a good interleaver can increase Turbo code's minimum distance and decrease the number of low weight codes,accordingly, the perfect performance of Turbo codes can be obtained. In this paper, the design of interleaver for Turbo codes based on convolutional codes is examined, and a scheme is proposed using (37,21)RSC as constituent code. The scheme is generalized to Turbo codes based on common RSC. Then the influence of proposed interleaver on the distance spectrum of Turbo codes is analyzed. And the choice of constituent codes is discussed when using the proposed interleaver. It is obvious that the scheme proposed will take effect at the bit error rate 10-5.

Abstract:This correspondence concerns the performance analysis of turbo-single-parity-check (SPC) codes based on the union bound of bit- error rate (BER).A treatment of the special interleavers used in turbo-SPC codes is discussed.It is shown that simple two- or four-state turbo-SPC codes with multiple component codes can perform comparably as (or even better than) the -state standard turbo codes.Using more complex trellis codes (with state number more than ) appears unnecessary for such codes.Instead, performance improvement can be achieved by increasing the number of component codes, which maintains the low decoding complexity property of turbo-SPC codes. Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the performance of iterative decoding for concatenated Turbo coded and Space-time block coded (STBC) system. In our proposed system the soft parity bit needs to be estimated, which differs from traditional Turbo decoding, as the receiver adopts iterative decoding not only to Turbo codes but the entire system. In this case a simplified and effective method of parity bit estimation is presented, which we focus on, resulting in a moderate increase of complexity. Simulation results demonstrate that performance improvement can be obtained using the iterative scheme. Meanwhile the increase of complexity caused by iteration and parity bit estimation in exchange for performance improvement is considered. Our proposed scheme makes an optimal trade-off between complexity and performance for transmitting in Rayleigh fading channel.
Understanding Turbo Codes: A Signal Processing Study

Abstract:In this paper, we study turbo codes from the digital signal processing point of view by defining turbo codes over the complex field. It is known that iterative decoding and interleaving between concatenated parallel codes are two key elements that make turbo codes perform significantly better than the conventional error control codes. This is analytically illustrated in this paper by showing that the decoded noise mean power in the iterative decoding decreases when the number of iterations increases, as long as the interleaving decorrelates the noise after each iterative decoding step. An analytic decreasing rate and the limit of the decoded noise mean power are given. The limit of the decoded noise mean power of the iterative decoding of a turbo code with two parallel codes with their rates less than 1/2 is one third of the noise power before the decoding, which can not be achieved by any non-turbo codes with the same rate. From this study, the role of designing a good interleaver can also be clearly seen.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the design and decoding schemes for shortened turbo product codes adopted in IEEE 802.16 standard. To design a good structure for shortened turbo product code, we compute the undetected error probability of the component codes and select the optimal generator polynomials in terms of their undetected error probability. For the decoding algorithm, we present an efficient Chase decoding algorithm for shortened turbo product codes in which the reliability factor used in Pyndiah's scheme is not needed. Thus the decoding complexity is reduced greatly by avoiding the normalization operation of the whole codeword at each iteration. Simulation results are presented to verify the performance of the proposed algorithm

Abstract:An encryption method based on Turbo codes is proposed in this paper. In the scheme, two measures are adopted to encrypt information: Firstly, binary pseudo random sequence generated by Logistic chaotic mapping is used to encrypt the first output of Turbo codes, at the same time to control the generated matrix of the second and third output; Secondly, the output of interleaver is controlled by the secret key, which is associated with the interleaver chosen. Simulation results of the image transmission show that the scheme has good performance in security and error-correcting capability.

Abstract:Double-binary Turbo code is one of the FEC methods for multi-carrier OFDM physical layer of 802.16 standard which supports the WMAN.It has many advantages compared to the classical Turbo code,such as higher encoding efficiency,better error-correcting performance for the equivalent implementation complexity and lower decoding latency.The feature of the encoder structure for double-binary Turbo code is introduced and two decoding algorithms are deduced in detail in this paper,while the simulation results are given as well.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose an equalization algorithm based on serial concatenation turbo-like method-turbo code and parallel concatenation turbo-like method-turbo equalization to improve the BER performance of the general turbo equalization. Utilizing turbo code, we can get more exact probability of channel encoder input data bits, needed in a maximum a-posteriori probability (MAP) decoder, to replace the independent and identically distributed (IID) assumption of this probability in general turbo equalization. From the relationship between the two turbo-like methods we can investigate the convergence property of turbo codes in turbo equalization, and then determine the appropriate degrees of iteration in inner loop based on certain iteration degree in outer loop.

Abstract:Multiple antenna wireless systems can provide larger channel capacity and enable spatial diversity to combat fading. In this paper we conduct an investigation into the design of coded space-time system obtained by serially concatenating channel code module and space-time code module with an interleaver in between. As an example, the system is constructed by employing low decoding complexity turbo-SPC (single parity check) code as outer module and linear complex field space-time code as inner module, which achieves full diversity and lossless equivalent channel capacity. Simulation results prove that our designed system performs well and it only loses 0.8 dB from multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) capacity at BER = 10−5 in the case of information bit length 6048. Compared with turbo code-based systems, it also has lower error floor.

Abstract:In this paper we described the role of interleaver in turbo codes, analyzed the drawback of random interleaver. Then we presented a new class of deterministic interleavers, which have simple analytic expressions and are easy to be realized in applications. By simulation results, this kind of interleavers performed better than the average performance of a set of random interleavers.

Abstract:Tail-biting codes are considered as component codes for parallel concatenated block codes. Based on the two-dimensional weight distribution of tail-biting codes, we calculate the minimum distance of the parallel concatenated code and give guidelines on how to choose good tail-biting component codes. We show how to encode tail-biting codes using systematic feedback encoders, which is an important design criterion. The performance of codes with different rate, length, and complexity using iterative (turbo) decoding is evaluated by simulation.

Abstract:Polar codes are the first provable capacity-achieving channel codes. Despite the splendid performance of long Polar codes, short Polar codes have relatively poor performance compared with other modern channel coding schemes (e.g., Turbo codes and LDPC). In this paper, we explore some practical methods to improve the performance of Polar codes with short to moderate codeword lengths. First, we use Reed Solomon (RS) codes as outer codes. With a specific interleaving strategy, we can concatenate multiple RS codes with one frame of Polar codes. Combining a strategy of allocating unequal RS code rates with the concatenation, different levels of protection are assigned based on the error pattern of successive cancellation list (SCL) decoders. Thus, the finite length performance will certainly be enhanced for this encoding scheme. Meanwhile, the memory size that the original SCL decoding procedure requires is reduced, and the increment of overall decoding complexity is small. Additionally, we propose an intra-frame interleaver to further enhance the performance by dispersing errors. Finally, we designed a list decoding scheme for the proposed multi-RS concatenated Polar codes. Depending on the soft information generated by an SCL decoder, we calculated the reliability of each RS symbol and conducted soft RS decoding. So, the overall performance was enhanced under this joint decoding strategy. Simulation results indicate that the bit error rate (BER) performance of short Polar codes can be well improved.

Abstract:Space-time block codes (STBC) are widely used to obtain diversity gain in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channel and Turbo codes are used to provide coding gain. So here a turbo-coded STBC concatenated system, which fully exploits the diversity gain and coding gain are studied. Specially we propose an iterative decoding scheme with a soft information processor created in the system to adjust the soft information for higher reliability in the system. It calls on iteration procedure in the whole system. Meanwhile we also investigate a number of Turbo codes schemes applied in the system. Simulation results in the end show that the system performance can be improved compared with conventional direct-connected decoding systems. It depends on numbers of iteration in the concatenated system and types of Turbo codes. Impoved BER performance can be achieved by making a trade-off between types of Turbo codes and numbers of iteration.

Abstract:Turbo codes conventionally adopt modified BAHL et al. algorithm, a kind of probabilitic iterative decoding algorithm based on soft values. To fully make use of the information on the deterministic structure of turbo constituent encoders according to the algebraic decoding principle in conjunction with the probabilitic decoding algorithm, this paper proposed a joint probability-algebra decoding scheme for turbo codes. Combining the advantages of iterative soft decoding and algebraic decoding and efficiently avoiding the bit error propagation, the proposed scheme is capable of further improving the error-correcting performance of turbo codes. It is not only a new research method to lower the Bit Error Rate (BER) and the error floor of turbo codes but valuable for applications as a result of better error correcting performance. Simulation results show that the turbo codes can obtain about 0.1 dB asymptotic coding gain with the proposed scheme than those with the typical turbo-code decoding schemes when the BER is between 10-3-10-4.
