Abstract:A nonlinear dynamic model of a two-span rotor system is constructed based on the Hamilton principle and the finite element method. The Musznyska model and the short bearing model are employed to describe the nonlinear seal force and oil-film force. The fourth-order Runge-Kutta method is used to calculate the numerical solutions. The bifurcation diagrams, time-history diagrams, phase trajectories, and Poincare maps are presented to analyze the dynamic behavior of the bearing center and the disk center in the horizontal direction. The numerical results indicate that the rotational speed, the nonlinear seal force, the oil-film force, and the stiffness of the coupling have a significant effect on the stability of the rotor system. The dynamic behavior of the two-span rotor system is more complicated when impacted by the nonlinear seal force and oil-film force.

Abstract:This article summarizes the research status of nonlinear rotor-bearing dynamics system in china and abroad, discusses several major problems of nonlinear rotor-bearing dynamics system and refers to a large number of references. The review includes the following three aspects: modeling for the nonlinear oil film force of rotor-bearing system; general analysis methods of nonlinear rotor-bearing system; and numerical analysis methods of nonlinear rotor-bearing system. Abstract:Based on the theory of nonlinear dynamics and rotor dynamics,a new complicated rotor-bearing-seal system dynamic model with double-impeller-bearing staggered arrangement considering Muszynska's nonlinear seal force, the nonlinear oil film force and the mass eccentricity of the disk was proposed.The finite element method(FEM)was applied to derive the motion differential equations of the system and analyze the effects of system speed,disk eccentricity, seal length and seal clearance on the dynamic characteristics of the system.By using bifurcation diagrams,frequency spectra,phase trajectory maps,and Poincare maps,the dynamic state of the system was presented.The studies demonstrated that the coupled system is highly nonlinear;with parameters'change,the system reveals rich forms of its dynamic behaviors including periodic,multi-periodic,quasi-periodic and chaotic motions;small disk eccentricity,long seal length and suitable seal clearance is helpful to improve the stability of the system.

Abstract:Rotor bearing support system is widely applied in rotating machinery .Its dynamics has a great impact on the normal operation of rotating machinery.Based on the dynamical equation, the nonlinear dynamical behavior conducted by dual delay bearing rotor system under active control is deduced.And the movement locus of the rolling bearing journal center before and af-ter the active control is also analyzed and compared .It is showed that the vibration of bearing rotor system would be influenced by delaying control and the vibration amplitude as well as the bearing failures can be reduced by appropriate control methods .

Abstract:The stiffness of transverse crack rotor element was calculated by Rayleigh theory.A mathematical model of a multi-disk flexible rotor-bearing system with transverse crack axis was established based on finite element method.The model theoretically analyzed the influence of the crack on the dynamic characteristics of the multi-disk flexible rotor-bearing.The nonlinear resonance of the multi-disk flexible rotor due to the crack was analyzed.The characteristics of the nonlinear resonance was discussed,especially the two times and three times harmonic components of multi-disk flexible rotor system and the rotor orbit at the speed close to 1/2 and 1/3 of the first critical speed.The effect of the crack's position and depth on the nonlinear resonance characteristics of the multi-disk flexible rotor-bearing system was analyzed.Results demonstrate that compared to the simple Jeffcott rotor,it is effective to use two times and three times super-harmonic components at the sub-critical speed for the crack detection of multi-disk rotor system.

Abstract:The bolted structures have the advantages of high specific strength and easy maintenance, which are widely used in rotating machines such as gas turbines and aero-engines. Meanwhile, the complex nonlinear motions and bifurcations are easily induced by the nonlinear stiffness caused by the bolted structure in rotor systems, but these characteristics cannot be fully revealed only by numerical results. In this research, an analytical model of a bolted rotor system considering contact nonlinearity is established. The global bifurcation trees and semi-analytical periodic motions of the system are presented by the implicit discrete mapping method, which are also compared to the numerical solutions for validation. Multi-stable phenomena of independent periodic motions P-3(m+1), (m = 0, 1, 2) are discovered, the bifurcation jumping phenomena between the higher-order and lower-order motions are revealed, the occurrence of unstable motions is indicated in Neimark bifurcation judged by eigenvalues. In addition, the independence of the higher-order periodic motions in bifurcation tree is proved. Finally, the periodic motions of the nonlinear rotor system are numerically predicted by harmonic amplitudes and phase characteristics. These findings provide clear and complete solutions for understanding and presenting the nonlinear dynamic characteristics of bolted rotor systems considering the contact effect, which have great potential in guiding the dynamic design and parameter adjustment of practical rotating machines.

Abstract:According to l_st order slip velocity boundary,a modified Reynolds equation for micro gas bearings was derived. Alternating--direction implication method was adopted to solve modified Reynolds equation and nonlinear gas film force was calculated. With the motion equation of rigid ro- tor, the unbalance response of the rotor system was computed and the trajectory of rotor center, time history, power spectrum and Poincare maps were calculated and the dynamics of micro gas bearing-- rotor system was analyzed. The analysis shows the existence of a complex dynamic behavior compri- sing periodic and subharmonic response of the rotor center.

Abstract:In this study a new dynamic model of a rotor system is established based on the Hamilton principle and the finite element method (FEM). We analyze the dynamic behavior of the rotor system with the coupled effects of the nonlinear oil film force, the nonlinear seal force, and the mass eccentricity of the disk. The equations of the motion are solved effectively using the fourth order Runge-Kutta method in MATLAB. The dynamic behavior of the system is illustrated by bifurcation diagrams, largest Lyapunov exponents, phase trajectory diagrams, and Poincaré maps. The numerical results show that the rotational speed of the rotor, the pressure drop in the seal, the seal length, the seal clearance, and the mass eccentricity of the disk are the key parameters that significantly affect the dynamic characteristics of the rotor system. The motion of the rotor system exhibits complex types of periodic, quasi-periodic, double-periodic, multi-periodic, and chaotic vibrations. This analysis can be used to guide the design of seal parameters and to diagnose the vibration of rotor/bearing/seal systems.

Abstract:The transient oil flow field of journal bearing was calculated by using a new mesh movement approach for variable flow calculation based on structured grid in order to reveal the nonlinear dynamic behaviors of rotor-bearing coupling system. A quasi-coupling calculation method of transient fluid dynamics of oil film in journal bearing and rotor dynamics based on computational fluid dynamics (CFD) was proposed to realize the fluid-structure coupling calculation of rotor and journal bearing. The influences of oil inlet pattern and pressure on flow field of journal bearing were analyzed. The calculation results indicate that the whirling center of the journal relates not only to the rotation speed and static load but also to the vibration amplitude or dynamic load. When increasing the aspect ration or decreasing the clearance ration of journal bearing, the whirling center of the journal is floated upward, which in lead to the instability of rotor-bearing system.

Abstract:The stability and bifurcation behavior of a kind of active magnetic bearing rotor are investigated in this paper. The analysis is carried out both analytically and numerically. It is found that a Hopf bifurcation occurs in the system by using center manifold and normal form. Numerical simulation is conducted to validate the theoretical predictions. More precisely, the dynamic characteristics of this system in two-dimensional parameter space are analyzed, the phase diagrams assist us to identify multi-attractor coexisting that makes the dynamical behaviors of the system become more enrich and complex. These results we represent can be useful in designing and selection of suitable operating parameters. As a result, the system can avoid the undesirable behavior.

Abstract:Journal of Vibration and Control, Ahead of Print. Aero-engine rotor system contains a variety of connectors such as bolts and bearings. However, the dynamic behaviors of the connection are complex in actual engineering. In this paper, the dynamic behavior of the rotor-bearing system with bolted joints and the influence of the parameters of the joints on it are clarified. The parameters include the bearing clearance and the deflection caused by the uneven bolt preload. A rotor-bearing model with bolted joints is established by using Lagrange equations. The bifurcation diagram is solved to explore the tendency of vibration of the system at different speeds by considering the Hertz contact force. Furthermore, the phase diagram, Poincaré map, time-domain steady-state response curve, and spectrum diagram are used to discuss the dynamic behaviors of the system specifically. The influence of the bearing clearance change and uneven bolt preload on the dynamic behaviors is investigated by using the bifurcation diagram. The result shows that the motion of the system is extremely complex, which includes chaotic motion. The Lyapunov exponent is then calculated to verify whether the system enters chaos. The correctness of the model is verified by comparing the result in this work with those in the literature. The model can clarify the dynamic behaviors of the system well and has high accuracy, which can provide the theoretical guidance for the design of rotor-bearing systems with bolted joints.

Abstract:There is a complex dynamic interaction between the aero-engine bearing and the rotor, and the resulting time-varying system parameters have an impact on the nonlinear dynamic characteristics of the rolling bearing-flexible rotor system. In this study, the interaction between the time-varying stiffness of the rolling bearing and the transient response of the flexible rotor is considered. The Newmark-β integral method is used to solve the dynamic equation, and the relationship between the time-varying characteristics of bearing stiffness and load and the dynamic characteristics of the rotor is studied. The relationship between bearing stiffness and vibration strength is analyzed, and the influence of damage size on the time domain signal energy of the disc is analyzed. The results show that the model established in this paper can accurately reflect the dynamic interaction between the bearing and the rotor. With the extension of the bearing damage, the dynamic stiffness of the bearing attenuates, the intensity of the excitation force increases, and the vibration is transmitted to the disc, which affects the motion stability and vibration response of the disc.

Abstract:An unbalanced rotor dynamic model supported on ball bearings is established. In the model, three nonlinear factors of ball bearing are considered, namely, the clearance of bearing, nonlinear Hertzian contact force between balls and races, and the varying compliance vibrations because of periodical change in contact position between balls and races. The numerical integration method is used to obtain the nonlinear dynamic responses; the effects of the rotating speed and the bearing clearance on dynamic responses are analyzed; and the bifurcation plots, the phase plane plots, the frequency spectra, and the Poincaré maps are used to carry out the analyses of bifurcation and chaotic motion. Period doubling, quasiperiod loop breaking, and mechanism of intermittency are observed as the routes to chaos.

Abstract:This paper clarifies the mechanism of the dynamic characteristics of the water-lubricated bearing-rotor coupling system at different operating stages. Dynamic models of the water-lubricated bearing-rotor system under fluid lubrication are developed. The influences of different operating modules on the dynamic characteristics are investigated. The effects of different speeds, different loads, and different impacts are analyzed. The time domain responses, axis orbits, and phase diagram are gained. Velocity has impacts on the vibration performance of the shaft. The external load has slight effects on the vibration characteristics. Different forms of transient impacts have different effects on the vibration characteristics. The validity of the new-built models is verified by experiments. Results provide theoretical foundations for the optimum design for such bearing-rotor systems.

Abstract:Advances in Mechanical Engineering, Volume 16, Issue 11, November 2024. A nonlinear dynamic model of a rotor supported by the turbulent journal bearing with quadratic damping under nonlinear suspension is presented in this study, and the lubricating oil is assumed to be temperature-dependent. The bifurcation diagrams, dynamic trajectories, power spectra, Poincaré map, Lyapunov exponent, and fractal dimension are used to verify the dynamic characteristics of the rotor-bearing system, and abundant subharmonic, and even chaotic motions are found. Temperature is one of the key parameters affecting the dynamic responses of the system, and the dynamic responses will perform non-periodic or even chaotic motions with higher working temperatures of lubricant fluid, as proved in this study. Nonlinear dynamic simulation analysis results will help engineers avoid unnecessary trial and error when designing and applying rotating machinery systems.

Abstract:Based on the finite element method (FEM) and the Lagrange equation, a novel nonlinear model of a double disc rotor-seal system, including the coupled effects of the gravity force of the discs, Muszynska’s nonlinear seal fluid dynamic force, and the mass eccentricity of the discs, is proposed. The fourth order Runge-Kutta method is applied to solve the motion equations of the system and numerically determine the vibration response of the center of the discs. The dynamic behavior of the system is analyzed using bifurcation diagrams, time-history diagrams, axis orbit diagrams, Poincaré maps, and amplitude spectrums. With the rotor speed increasing, the system presents rich forms including periodic, multi-periodic, quasi-periodic, and chaotic motion. We also discuss the effects of the distance between the two discs, the mass of the discs, seal clearance, seal length, and seal drop pressure on the dynamic behavior of the system. The numerical results demonstrate that a symmetrical disc structure, small disc mass, proper seal clearance, long seal length and high seal drop pressure can enhance the stability of a double disc rotor-seal system. The results provide a theoretical foundation for the design of multi-stage sealing systems.

Abstract:In large rotating machines, the rotor system involves multistage disks, where bolted joints are the basic form to connect the adjacent disks. Those bolted joints, subjected to unbalanced forces and moments during normal operation, influencing the rotor dynamics and giving rise to different motion states, which are of interest for investigations focusing on vibration signatures and dynamic stability. However, little research has been done on the rotor vibration characteristics considering dynamic parameters of bolted-disk joints. Thus, the bolted-disk joint element with two nodes is proposed by characterizing the mechanical relationship between the adjacent disks in this paper. Then, in terms of the proposed joint element and lumped mass modeling method, the dynamic model for the rotor system with a bolted-disk joint is established. After that, the responses of the system are solved numerically using the Newmark-β method, and bifurcation diagram, three-dimensional spectral plots, Poincare maps as well as spectral plots are used to analyze the dynamic behaviors under different tangential stiffness and transition point of bending stiffness of the bolted joint. Additionally, the influences of the bending stiffness of bolted-disk joint on system response are also examined. Finally, utilizing the rotor dynamic responses experiment performed at a bolted-joint rotor-bearing test rig with an electric tightening wrench, some of the results from the simulation study are verified. The present work provides a theoretical basis for detecting the performance of the bolted joint of the rotor-bearing system, and prevent failure caused by changes in the stiffness of the bolted joint.

Abstract:In order to study lubrication characteristics of an elliptical bearing and the nonlinear dynamic behaviors of a rotor-bearing system,an unsteady flow field was calculated by employing a new dynamic mesh approach based on structured grid.A weak-coupling calculation between oil film in a journal bearing and rotor dynamic behaviors was realized by transferring data between two domains.An analysis was performed to study the transient operation process of journal bearings with different structures using their inner lubrication flow field.Through discussion and calculation for influences of rotating speed,amount of unbalance and structural parameters on the bearing-rotor system's working performance,it was shown that the effects of the tip clearance on the stability is larger than those of the side clearance;the whirling center of the journal is related to not only rotating speed but also dynamic load;with increase in amount of unbalance,the whirling center is close to the coordinate origin to cause a decrease in the stability margin.The results provided a theoretical basis for studying dynamic characteristics of elliptical bearings and stability of a rotor-bearing system.
Dynamic characteristics analysis of a dual-rotor system with inter-shaft bearing

Abstract:The dual-rotor structure is susceptible to vibration, causing the malfunction of the entire operating system. In order to avoid the resonance during operation, it is significant and necessary to conduct modal analysis of such rotors. The dynamic analysis of the full dual-rotor system under operating conditions is also necessary to study dynamic characteristics of the rotating system. In this paper, one-dimension Timoshenko beam-type model, including the effects of gyroscopic moments, rotary inertias, bending and shear deformations, and three-dimension model for dual-rotor system with inter-shaft bearing are developed. Critical speed tests of dual-rotor are carried out to verify the analytical results. Based on the finite element models, the first critical speed excited by inner rotor and the first two critical speeds excited by outer rotor are calculated. The comparisons between both finite element models indicate that 1D model costs less time, which can be used to predict the critical speeds. Good agreement between the theoretical and experimental results shows the accuracy of the FE models. The Campbell diagram, critical speeds, operational deflection shapes and unbalance response of the dual-rotor are obtained to fully study the dynamic characteristics of the dual-rotor system.
