Abstract:Objective:To identify the compositions of essential oil from Chimonanthus nitens Oliv.Method:The es- sential oil was extracted from Chimonanthus nitens Oliv.through steam distillation method according to1995 edition of Chinese pharmacopoeia.GC/MS was used for the determination of essential oil.Results:41 among the 62 separa- ted constituents were identified,which constituted 97.92% of the total amount,the contents of 11 compounds were over 1%.Eucalyptol was the richest(50.53%),other 10 important components were characterized to be terpenes. Conclusion:The experiment conducted in our laboratory with the essential oil show that it is a simple,rapid,efi- cient,inexpensive and with good repeatability and recovery.It is excellent to separate and determine the component of essential oil from Chimonanthus nitens Oliv.,and offer reference value in the development and application study of the volatile oil.

Abstract:Fresh Mentha haplocalyx is a well known traditional Chinese medicinal material (CMM) used in both China and America. This paper reports analysis of the volatile components of fresh Mentha haplocalyx by comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography (GCxGC) and high-resolution time-of-flight mass spectrometry (HR-TOF-MS), a combination that provides almost complete chemical separation with elemental composition determination of analytes. 163 ketones and terpenes, including menthol and menthone, were tentatively identified, including enantiomers. This study suggests that GCxGCxHR-TOF-MS is suitable for routine identification of target compounds and enantiomers in CMM.
[Study of chemical constituents in active parts of Mentha spicata III]

Abstract:Objective: To study the chemical constituents of Mentha spicata. Method: The chemical constituents were isolated by silica gel column chromatography, and identified by physical and chemical characters and spectroscopic analysis. Result: Compounds I - V were obtained and their structures were elucidated as protocatechuic aldehyde (I), protocatechuic acid (II), chrysoeriol (III), 5, 6-dihydroxy-7, 8, 3', 4'-tetramethoxyflavone (IV), nodifloretin (V). Conclusion: Compound I and II were first isolated from the genus Mentha. Compound Ill, IV and V were isolated from M. spicata for the first time.

Abstract:The chemical composition of Mentha haplocalyx volatile oils from different origins was studied by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) and comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography/time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC × GC/TOFMS). A total of 67 compounds were identified by GC/MS and a total of 1956 compounds were identified by GC × GC/TOFMS from five Mentha haplocalyx samples in different origins. In the GC × GC/TOFMS chromatogram, the classification of group type could be clearly observed. The results of GC × GC/TOFMS showed that there were some significant differences in chemical composition of Mentha haplocalyx between Anhui and other geographically areas, especially the biologically active ingredient of Isopiperitone, Levomenthol and Isomenthone. They were more abundant from Anhui than that from other origins. Principal component analysis (PCA) of GC/MS and GC × GC/TOFMS data was performed. The results showed that the PCA model constructed with the data of GC × GC/TOFMS was better than that of GC/MS to identify the authenticity of Mentha haplocalyx medicinal materials. Using the particle-assisted solvent flotation method, the active compounds were enriched from Mentha haplocalyx samples, which could be further used for food additive or pharmacological activity research.

Comparison of Volatile Oils from Citrus Bergamot Extracted by Different Methods with GC-MS

Abstract:Objective:To compare and analyse the chemical compositions and their relative contents of volatile oils from Citrus Bergamot extracted by steam distillation method and supercritical fluid extraction(SFE) method.Methods:Gas chromatography and mass spectrometry(GC-MS) combining computer retrieval were used for separating and identifying the chemical compositions of volatile oils from Citrus Bergamot.Chromatographic peak area normalization method was used for calculating their relative content of compositions.Results:18 chemical compositions were obtained from Bergamot volatile oils by steam distillation method and 16 chemical compositions were identified by SFE method.The main components isolated by both methods were D-limonene.The steam distillation method showed its content was 57.87%and the SFE method reported 81.18%.In addition to D-limonene,the steam distillation also identified 25.12%(+)-2-carene,but it was not obtained by SFE method.Conclusion:The results of the two extraction methods varied,however both identified the main component as D-limonene.The percentage of D-limonene was found to be higher with the SFE method.

Abstract:Quantitative descriptive sensory analysis(QDSA),gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry(GC-IMS)and Heracles NEO electronic nose(E-nose)combined with chemometrics were used for differential analysis of volatile compounds in essential oils(EOs)extracted from sweet orange peels(blood and navel)using cold pressing(CP),microwave-assisted hydrodistillation(MAHD)or spinning cone column(SCC).The results indicated that significant variations in flavor composition were found among the three EOs.The CP oil had the highest sensory preference with stronger fruity,sweet,and floral aromas.The MAHD oil had stronger fatty,green,and woody aromas,and the SCC oil had a lower aroma intensity.A total of 64 volatile components were identified by GC-IMS,terpenes,alcohols and aldehydes being the major ones,followed by acids,esters and other compounds.The fingerprint indicated that the contents of terpenes in the CP and MAHD oils were significantly higher than that in the SCC oil,whereas the contents of alcohols and aldehydes in the MAHD and SCC oils were significantly higher than those in the CP oil.Based on relative odor activity value(ROAV),β-myrcene and linalool were identified as the major contributors to the flavor of sweet orange EO.Moreover,using GC-IMS combined with partial least square discriminant analysis(PLS-DA)and variable importance in the projection(VIP),13 differential volatile compounds were identified as aroma markers to distinguish among the 6 oils.Additionally,E-nose combined with principal component analysis(PCA)and discriminant factor analysis(DFA)also successfully distinguished among the 6 EOs according to their volatile compounds.

Abstract:This present study aims to characterize the essential oil compositions of the aerial parts of M. spicata L. and endemic M. longifolia ssp. cyprica (Heinr. Braun) Harley by using GC-FID and GC/MS analyses simultaneously. In addition, it aims to perform multivariate statistical analysis by comparing with the existing literature, emphasizing the literature published within the last two decades, conducted on both species growing within the Mediterranean Basin. The major essential oil components of M. spicata were determined as carvone (67.8%) and limonene (10.6%), while the major compounds of M. longifolia ssp. cyprica essential oil were pulegone (64.8%) and 1,8-cineole (10.0%). As a result of statistical analysis, three clades were determined for M. spicata: a carvone-rich chemotype, a carvone/trans-carveol chemotype, and a pulegone/menthone chemotype, with the present study result belonging to the carvone-rich chemotype. Carvone was a primary determinant of chemotype, along with menthone, pulegone, and trans-carveol. In M. longifolia, the primary determinants of chemotype were identified as pulegone and menthone, with three chemotype clades being pulegone-rich, combined menthone/pulegone, and combined menthone/pulegone with caryophyllene enrichment. The primary determinants of chemotype were menthone, pulegone, and caryophyllene. The present study result belongs to pulegone-rich chemotype.

Abstract:The essential oil of the Vitexd rotundifolia L. was abstracted by steam distillation. The oil obtained was dried with anhydrous sodium sulfate. The chemical constituents were analyzed by GC/MS. More than 30 peaks were separated by GC, and 28 compounds were identified by using NBS mass spectral data, and the Wiley/NBS registry of mass spectral data. The structrure of delta3-carene was further verified by GC/FTIR. The identified constituents represent over 95% of the peak area on TIC of the essential oil. The major chemical constituents of them are delta3-carene, 1,8-cineole, sabinene, beta-phellandrene and isoterpinolene.
Chemical Composition and In Vitro Antibacterial Activity of Mentha spicata Essential Oil against Common Food-Borne Pathogenic Bacteria

Abstract:The aim of the present study was to investigate chemical composition and antibacterial activity of essential oil from the leaf of Mentha spicata plant against common food-borne pathogenic bacteria ( Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Bacillus cereus, Listeria monocytogenes, Salmonella typhimurium , and Escherichia coli O157:H7). Chemical composition of the essential oil was identified by gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometer detector (GC-MS). The antibacterial activity of the essential oil was evaluated by broth microdilution method and agar disk diffusion assay. According to the result of GC-MS analysis, 18 components were identified, accounting for 99.89% of the whole essential oil. The main components were carvone (78.76%), limonene (11.50%), β -bourbonene (11.23%), cis -dihydrocarveol (1.43%), trans -caryophyllene (1.04%), menthone (1.01%), menthol (1%), and terpinen-4-ol (0.99). The essential oil exhibited moderate level of antibacterial activity against all test microorganisms. In general, Gram-positive bacteria were more susceptible to M. spicata essential oil than Gram-negative bacteria. L. monocytogenes was the most sensitive of the microorganisms to the antibacterial activity of M. spicata essential oil (inhibition zone = 22 mm and MIC and MBC = 2.5 μ L/mL). Based on our results, the essential oil of M. spicata plant collected from Kermanshah province, west of Iran, has a potential to be applied as antibacterial agent.

Abstract:In order to understand the material basis of wild Mentha asiatica Boris. in Xinjiang, the chemical constituents of essential oil extracted from aerial parts of this plant were studied. A total 52 components were detected and 45 compounds were identified. First of all, the essential oil was separated by silica gel column chromatography, and divided into several parts according to the results of thin layer chromatography. Eight fractions were obtained, and then each fragment was preliminarily screened for antibacterial activity. It was found that all eight fragments had certain antibacterial activity in different level. Then the fractions were subjected to preparative gas chromatography (prep-GC) for further isolation. Ten compounds were identified by 13 C-NMR, 1 H-NMR and gas chromatography-quadrupole time of flight-Mass spectrometry (GC-QTOF-MS). They are sabinene, limonene and β-caryophyllene, (1R*,3S*,5R*)-sabinyl acetate, piperitone oxide, rotundifolone, thymol, piperitone, 4-hydroxypiperiditone, cedrol. After screened by bioautography, 4-hydroxypiperone and thymol were showed best antibacterial activity. The inhibitory effects of the two isolated compounds on Candida albicans and their related mechanisms were studied. The results showed that, 4-hydroxypiperone and thymol significantly reduced ergosterol content on the surface of Candida albicans cell membrane in a dose-dependent manner. This work has accumulated experience for the development and utilization of Xinjiang characteristic medicinal plant resources and new drug research and development, and provided scientific basis and support for the later research and development of Mentha asiatica Boris.

Abstract:The essential oils from leaves of Ceratophyllum demersum L. and Vallisneria spiralis L. from China were isolated by steam distillation in yields of 0.15% and 0.10%, respectively, and their chemical composition was examined by GC and GC-MS. More than 50 constituents were identified, representing 87% of the total oils. The main components were basically the same in the two plants' essential oils. 2-Methylpropanoic acid 3-hydroxy-2,4,4-trimethylpentyl ester (> 15%), 2-methylpropanoic acid 2,2-dimethyl-1-(2-hydroxy-l-methylethyl)propyl ester (> 3%), P-ionone-5,6-epoxide (> 7%), toluene (> 6%), hexanal (> 5%) and 1,2-benzenedicarboxylic acid di(2-methylpropyl) ester (> 5%) were the major components. Abstract:The constituents of essential oil extracted from the whole herbs of Crossostephium chinense (L.) Makino by water steam distillation were analyzed by GC-MS method.Two hundred and thirty-two compounds were separated.Their relative contents were determined.Fifty-six compounds comprising 62.59% of the total essential oil were identified.The content of the major compound,isocaryophillene,reaches up to 14.94% of the total oil.
Monoterpene composition of essential oil from peppermint (Mentha x piperita L.) with regard to leaf position using solid-phase microextraction and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry analysis

Abstract:Monoterpene compounds of leaf pairs and flowers of Mentha x piperita have been studied by direct headspace sampling using solid-phase microextraction coupled with gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (SPME-GC/MS). The content of peppermint-characteristic compounds such as menthol, menthyl acetate, and neomenthol increased in a basipetal direction (older plant parts), whereas menthone and isomenthone showed higher levels in the acropetal direction (younger plant parts). Higher levels of menthofuran were found in peppermint flowers in contrast to the leaves. SPME sampling resulted in relatively higher amounts of high-volatile monoterpenes and lower detection of less volatile compounds such as menthol and menthone, compared to solvent-based samples from essential oil distillation.

Abstract:The species chosen for this study is sweet mint, Mentha spicata L, harvested in the wilaya of El Bayadh in Algeria. The aim of this work is to highlight the plant's identification criteria, its yield in essential oil, the various physico-chemical parameters and the composition of the essential oil using different techniques (determination of several chemical indices and establishment of the list of constituents of the essential oil using chromatographic methods). The botanical study showed the presence of two types of "Lamiaceae" type secretory hairs. These secretory hairs are the histological support for the production and storage of essential oils. A study of the kinetics of the extraction yield shows that distillation is rapid from 0 to 120 minutes, when the yield reaches an optimum (1.08%). The organoleptic characteristics and physico-chemical indices obtained are in line with the standards given in the bibliography. Thin layer chromatography revealed the presence of several constituents through the appearance of several spots of different colour and Rf, three of which were identified by comparison with controls, namely menthol, cineol and carvone.

Abstract:Essential oil was extracted from tangerine peel by supercritical fluid CO2(SCF-CO2) and its chemical composition was detected by GCMS. Based on orthogonal array design test, the optimum extraction conditions were screened as extraction pressure 250 bar, temperature 45 degrees C, tangerine peel particle size less than 0.35 mm and extraction time 120 min. Thirty nine volatile compounds were identified in the essential oil and the most abundant volatiles were alpha-farnesene, beta-elemene and limonene.

Abstract:Volatile oil,extracted from the leaves of Mangifera persiciformis by steam distillation,was analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry(GC-MS)for the first time.The relative contents in the volatile oil were determined by peak area normalization.38 components were identified,which accounted for 94.52% of the volatile oil of the leaves.The major compositions were Germacrene D(18.33%),Ledol(9.46%),Caryophyllene(9.04%),δ-Cadinene(5.73%),1(R)-α-Pinene(5.32%),β-Elemene(4.90%),α-Gurjunene(4.26%),Phenol,2-(1,1-dimethylethyl)-5-methyl-(3.78%),allo-aromadendrene(3.45%),δ-Elemene(3.41%),Selina-3,7(11)-diene(3.27%),Spathulenol(3.20%),and many of the components had biological activity.This study will provide theoretic basis for the multiple utilization and developments of the leaves of M.persiciformis.
Comparative Study of Extraction Methods of Rose Flower Essential Oil

Abstract:OBJECTIVE To study on three methods for extraction of rose flower essential oil,to investigate the changes of the chemical constituents.METHODS The conditions were:solid to liquid ratio 1 ∶ 8,adding 5％ concentration of sodium chloride and standing for 4 h,distillation for 3 h.Rose essential oil were isolated using simultaneous distillation and extraction method,solvent extraction separation method and secondary distillation method,respectively.The chemical compositions were analyzed using GC-MS.RESULTS The 22 components were identified by simultaneous distillation and extraction method and secondary distillation method,respectively;5 components were identified by solvent extraction separation method,the essential oils obtained by three methods contained common components and also showed differences.CONCLUSION The method of adding hexane before distillation can overcome the difficulty of oil-water separation,which is beneficial to the recovery of oil via steam distillation.

Abstract:The volatile profile of Mentha longifolia was observed using GC-MS, GC-FID, FT-IR and 13 CNMR. Twenty-two constituents were found to be present in this essential oil, accounting 96.04 (%) of total essential oil and oxegenated monoterpenes were major class of compounds. The key constituents of this essential oil were pieritenone oxide (45.9%), piperitone (17.5%), beta caryophyllene (10.2%), and Germacrene D (5.0%). FT-IR showed peak at 1669 and 1707 cm −1 which may be due to the presence of carbonyl groups. Among the tested compounds, Germacrene D showed highest binding affinity value of −6.8 kcal mol −1 and a pKi value of 6.01. The dsc studies revealed that boiling point of this EO is above 200 °C. Microplate Alamar Blue assay (MABA) was carried out for the assessment of antimycobacterial activity using isoniazid and nicotinic as reference compound and oil was found to be active within conc. range of 0.8–1.6 μg/mL against mycobacterium tuberculosis, hence can act as a potential candidate against antituberculosis

Abstract:OBJECTIVE To study the chemical constituents and anti-bacterial activity of essential oil from compound Xueli.METHODS The essential oil was extracted from compound Xueli by steam distillation.The constituents from the essential oil were analyzed by GC-MS and the amount of the constituents was calculated by normalization method.The anti-bacterial tests of MIC and MBC for the essential oil were studied by using broth micro-dilution method.RESULTS Forty-three constituents were separated and identified,accounting for 85.21 of the total essential oil.The main constituents were palmitic acid(30.46),1H-cycloprop[e]-azulen-7-ol(15.70),naphthalene,1,2,3,4,4a,7-hexahydro-1,6-dimethyl-4-(1-methylethyl)(6.71),caryohyllene oxide(6.13),and 2,6-di-tert-butyl-p-cresol(5.93).The essential oil showed some certain anti-bacterial activities against the tested strains including Staphylococcus aureus,Blastomyces albicans,Pseudomonas aeruginosa,Escherichia coli,and Proteus hauseri.CONCLUSION The essential oil of compound Xueli contained various active constituents which showed certain anti-bacterial activity.The study will provide some scientific references for the further research of compound Xueli.
