Abstract:This paper proposes an analysis both on the spatial behavior of tourists as well as in their emotional experience on a given tourism destination. These elements play an important role in managing tourism destinations, in enhancing the satisfaction of the tourist and in avoiding touristic routes become overcrowded. Mountain resorts, an important type of Chinese tourism destination (with many world heritage spots among them), require a more comprehensive planning than other types of touristic spots. The extension of a mountain area and its undulate topography must be adequately pondered so that the physical efforts of the tourist lead to a positive experience in the process of climbing it. Therefore, taking Mount Sanqingshan as an example, this paper aims to analyze the different features regarding how tourists behave in small spaces within the mountain resort, and to reveal the impact of the route choice on the quality of their experience. With this goal in mind, we first acquired information about the different routes taken by tourists in the scenic area of Mount Sanqingshan through a questionnaire. Then, after summarizing 120 kinds of tourists trajectories (N=510) through a K-Means cluster analysis, we found out that different groups have great differences regarding spatial behavior and also concerning the choice of various routes. Middle-aged and elder people tend to choose the routes less frequented by most tourists in order to avoid huge crowds; those who have already visited the resort and go for the second time are more willing to try the newly-built southeast path along the cliff; and the tourists who have already been in the resort twice or more times prefer the ring route of Nanqing Garden. Furthermore, tour groups have more elements to make a satisfactory choice, avoiding turning back halfway, and thus they have the lowest proportion on the east ring route, where tourist tend to have a low-quality experience. Using various statistical methods of analysis, we examined the influence of the sightseeing path in the quality of the touristic experience. Results showed that the quality of the experience may vary and can be thus divided into seven patterns of spatial behavior, where different dimensions are gradually improved as the number of attractions and the length of the tour increase. Moreover, the entrance and exit of scenic spots and some parts of the tour trails have different effects on the degree of satisfaction, pleasure and involvement of the tourist. This paper, arguing that spatial behavior has a major influence on the experience and satisfaction of a tourist in multi-route scenic spots, also questions the assumption of homogeneous tourism experiences while studying multi-route scenic spots. The methodology used on this research can be of utmost help to create optimization strategies with the aim to improve the quality of the tourist's experience. On the one hand, it can either refine the routes which often get crowded or recommend the best tour route for a particular situation and; on the other, it can identify and compare the tour sections where the tourist experience was negative and immediately proceed to put forward improvement strategies. Therefore, the results obtained on this research have a practical value to enhance the experience satisfaction of the tourist and to optimize the route selection in large multi-route scenic spots.
