Abstract:This paper studies the normalization problem of XML documents with DTDs as their schemas. XML documents may contain redundant information due to a bad designed DTD which implies the similar anomaly dependencies among elements and attributes just as in relational database schema. The concepts of partial functional dependency and transitive functional dependency for XML DTD are proposed. And three XML normal forms: 1XNF, 2XNF and 3XNF, are defined based on the concepts of partial and transitive functional dependency. The concept of lossless join decomposition for DTD is defined by the relational representation of DTD. Finally, two lossless join decomposition algorithms are given for transforming a DTD into 2XNF and 3XNF, respectively.

Abstract:This paper studies the XML storage in relations. Unlike traditional techniques, it considers the semantics expressed by functional dependencies. We propose an algorithm for mapping DTD to relational schema, which preserves not only the content and structure but also the semantics of original XML documents. To tackle the problem of constraints expression, we introduce a way to define functional dependencies and normalization for DTD. In a normalized DTD, every constraints expressed by functional dependencies can be concluded to keys. So we use the key definitions for XML as the foundation for relation generation, and maintain the keys in relations. After investigating the relationship between functional dependencies in XML documents with the corresponding ones in relations, we further prove that, if the original DTD is normalized, the generated relations will be in BCNF. So our method keeps the good properties of normalized DTD, and can fully leverage the relational technology

Abstract:We study the problem of repairing XML functional dependency violations by making the smallest value modifications in terms of repair cost. Our cost model assigns a weight to each leaf node in the XML document, and the cost of a repair is measured by the total weight of the modified nodes. We show that it is beyond reach in practice to find optimum repairs: this problem is already NP-complete for a setting with a fixed DTD, a fixed set of functional dependencies, and equal weights for all the nodes in the XML document. To this end we provide an efficient two-step heuristic method to repair XML functional dependency violations. First, the initial violations are captured and fixed by leveraging the conflict hypergraph. Second, the remaining conflicts are resolved by modifying the violating nodes and their related nodes called determinants, in a way that guarantees no new violations. The experimental results demonstrate that our algorithm scales well and is effective in improving data quality.

Abstract:In this paper, we address the problem of validating constraints in XML. In particular, we concentrate on the three commonly discussed types of constraints, functional dependencies, keys and foreign keys. Unranked bottom-up tree automata can be used to validate XML documents against a schema, and we further extend the automata to validate constraints for XML. The automaton can, in only one pass, not only check the validity of an XML document w.r.t. DTD, but also validate the document against constraints. We discuss the computational complexity of the running of the automaton. Finally we give the prototype implementation, and provide the experimental results.

Abstract:Functional dependency (FD) is an important type of semantic knowledge reflecting integrity constraints in databases, and has nowadays attracted an increasing amount of research attention in data mining. Traditionally, FD is defined in the light of precise or complete data, and can hardly tolerate partial truth due to imprecise or incomplete data (such as noises, nulls, etc.) that may often exist in massive databases, or due to a very tiny insignificance of tuple differences in a huge volume of data. Based on the notion of functional dependencies with degrees of satisfaction (FDs)d, this article presents an efficient approach to discovering all satisfied (FDs)d using some important results obtained from exploration of (FDs)d properties such as extended Armstrong-like axioms and their derivatives. In this way, many dependencies can be inferred from previously discovered ones without scanning databases, and those unsatisfied ones could be filtered out inside (rather than after) the mining process. Fuzzy relation matrix operation is used to infer transitive dependencies in the mining algorithm. Finally, the efficiency is demonstrated with data experiments. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract:The exponential growth and the nature of Internet and web-based applications made eXtensible Markup Language (XML) as the de-facto standard for data exchange and data dissemination. Now it is gaining momentum in replacing conventional data models for data representation. XML with its self-describing hierarchical structure and its associated XML Schema (XSD), provide the flexibility and manipulative power needed to accommodate distributive, heterogeneous data. But due to XML's non-scalar, set-based semi-structured nature and ambiguity, traditional data design models lack the capability to conceptually model, design and successfully implement a data model. Due to this, organising and extracting information of XML documents with their conceptual and operational semantics intact is still a challenging task. In this paper, we propose a generic, language independent conceptual view mechanism for XML documents (XML View) to enhance conceptual modelling and designing capabilities of XML based information systems. We focus view definition at the conceptual level and the semantics required in accommodating such view mechanism at this higher level of abstraction.

Abstract:We propose an approach that can effectively validate key constrains over XML document by extracting key value and checking structural constraints. First we propose an XPath-based algorithm that can extract key values from the XML document and generate the corresponding key value document. Then we present how a key value document and its DTD can be designed to check whether predefined key constraints are satisfied. Last we draw an interesting conclusion that as long as XML keys can be expressed in XPath, the validation problem can be done by the XPath and the structural constraints checking.

Abstract:Although key definitions are adopted by XML Schema, validating hierarchical key constraints over XML document faces many difficult problems. The paper begins by proposing a systematic architecture for efficient XML key validation and incremental validation using XPath and structure checking. We propose a key value document generation algorithm and present how a key value document and its schema can be designed to check whether predefined key constraints are satisfied. Then we present a novel method that can support incremental validation of XML key constraints by incremental maintenance of key value document.

Abstract:In the domain of XML authoring, there have been many tools to help users to edit XML documents. These tools make it easier to produce complex documents by using such technologies as syntax-directed or presentation-oriented editing, etc. However, when an XML document contains data with some computation dependency among them, these tools cannot free users from the burden of maintaining this dependency relationship. By computation dependency, we mean that some data are gotten by computing from other data in the same document.In this paper, we present an environment for authoring XML document, in which users can express the data dependency relationship in one document explicitly rather than implicitly in their minds. Under this environment, the dependent parts of the document are represented as expressions, which in turn can be evaluated to generate the dependent data. Therefore, users need not to compute the dependent data first and then input them manually, as required by the current authoring tools.

Abstract:The eXtensible Markup Language (XML) is fast emerging as the dominant standard for describing and interchanging data among various systems and databases on the Internet. It offers the Document Type Definition (DTD) as a formalism for defining the syntax and structure of XML documents. The XML Schema definition language, as a replacement for the DTD, provides more rich facilities for defining and constraining the content of XML documents. However, it does not concentrate on the semantics that underlies these documents, representing a logical data model rather than a conceptual model. To enable efficient business application development in large-scale electronic commerce environments, it is necessary to describe and model real-world data semantics and their complex interrelationships. In this article, we describe a design methodology for XML documents. The aim is to enforce XML conceptual modeling power and bridge the gap between software development and XML document structures. The proposed methodology is comprised of two design levels: the semantic level and the schema level. The first level is based on a semantic network, which provides semantic modeling of XML through four major components: a set of atomic and complex nodes, representing real-world objects; a set of directed edges, representing semantic relationships between the objects; a set of labels denoting different types of semantic relationships, including aggregation, generalization, association, and of-property relationships; and finally a set of constraints defined over nodes and edges to constrain semantic relationships and object domains. The other level of the proposed methodology is concerned with detailed XML schema design, including element/attribute declarations and simple/complex type definitions. The mapping between the two design levels is proposed to transform the XML semantic model into the XML Schema, based on which XML documents can be systematically created, managed, and validated.

Abstract:This paper proposes three new XML integrity constraint techniques in CoXML system: Translation of functional dependencies in data exchange based on XML; XML schema oriented key constraints translation; validating key constraints over XML document using XPath.
