Abstract:The Yangtze River Economic Belt is a vital ecological security barrier and a focus of China’s economic development. Promoting the construction of urban agglomerations in the Yangtze River Basin is of great significance for accelerating the development of the Yangtze River Economic Belt. Using the five urban agglomerations in the Yangtze River Economic Belt as the research object, we evaluate their environmental carrying capacities and explore the coupling relationship between urban agglomeration development and environmental carrying capacity using a four-quadrant analysis method. We categorize these urban agglomerations into three types. The results show that the urban agglomeration in the Yangtze River Delta belongs to a mature–environmental overload type, the urban agglomerations in Chengdu–Chongqing and the middle reaches of the Yangtze River belong to the high-speed development–environmental overload type, and the urban agglomerations in central Guizhou and central Yunnan belong to the cultivation–environmental non-overload type. Furthermore, we propose strategic suggestions for the development of urban agglomerations in the Yangtze River Economic Belt from the aspects of ecological space control, optimization of land spatial pattern, green development of urban agglomerations, and improvement of human settlement environment. These aim to strengthen the guiding role of environmental carrying capacity in the development of urban agglomerations and provide basic support for promoting the high-quality development of the Yangtze River Economic Belt.

Abstract:The riverfront along large rivers, representing the water–land and human–nature interaction zone, is of great importance for economic and social development and eco-environmental protection. Human activities, such as urbanization and industrialization, together with inadequate urban planning and disorderly development, can result in serious ecological risks to riverfront ecosystems. The focus of this study was the riverfront along the Yangtze River in Jiangsu province, an area experiencing conflicting demands in terms of ecological protection and economic development. We identified the ecological problems and risks at different spatial scales (micro, meso, and macro) and, based on PSR model, construct an ecological risk assessment index system for any further development along the Yangtze River. Ecological hot spots and cluster zones were identified based on Getis-Ord Gi* hot spot analysis and Ward’s hierarchical clustering. The results showed that the ecological risk index at micro scale of the study area presented spatially positive correlation, with hot spots mainly concentrated in municipal districts. The hot spots of ecological risk assessment at the meso-scale are distributed in the estuary around the Yangtze River, and the cold spots are distributed on the Yang-Tai plain. According to the assessment indices of social economy, ecological function, and planning response at the macro scale, the study area could be divided into four clusters. Lastly, a spatial division of ecological risk posed by riverfront development along the Yangtze River in Jiangsu Province was constructed. On the basis of this analysis, we propose suitable risk management and resource protection measures.
Study on the Temporal and Spatial Variation of the Land Use Within the Framework of Niche Theory: Case Study of Jiangsu Province

Abstract:Accompanied with the rapid industrialization and urbanization in China, the shortage of resources becomes the most important factor which limits the development, especially in the developed districts such as the Yangtze River Delta. Land resource is the base of economic development but China’s per capita land resource is so lack as to support the economic development. So how to put land resource to rational use becomes a key problem. The marginal utility is the basic reason which causes the change of land use. According to the theory of Niche this paper quantitatively calculated interactive intensities in different land use types and studied the temporal and spatial variation of land use Niche of Jiangsu Province. The results showed that the gap of Niche between agricultural and non-agricultural land in Jiangsu was growing up at a rate of 0.17% every year during 1999-2005 which we can conclude the protection on agricultural land becomes more difficult. At the same time the gap between the south, middle and north of Jiangsu was expanding too. Barycenter of land use Niche and economics in Jiangsu from 1999-2005 was also studied and the result showed they were moving to south-east of Jiangsu. This paper presented that urbanization could absorb the redundant labors in the country which led to increase the Niche of arable land and Jiangsu can maintain dynamic balance of cropland by regulating land use of different area as a whole body.

Abstract:There is a comparative difference on urbanization among south, middle and north in Jiangsu province since it is affected by imbalance of social and economic development level. The difference represents city quantity, city size, urbanization, city modernization and city region nature, etc. The three regions should adopt different developing model in urbanization course since there are different development environment of urbanization in south, middle and north of Jiangsu province. Along river region is the best-developed region in Jiangsu province. It is possible to set up along river city strap since there is favorable inside and outside environment that represents perfect traffic and communications network, favorable mutual connection foundation, serried and grade trenchant town and governmental vigorous sustainment, etc. The constructing of along river city strap can bring into playing city gather size benefit, promote urbanization course in Jiangsu province and boost up radiant capacity of city.

Based on the eco-city concept and the index system proposed at home and abroad, we inherit the basic ideas and principles of the relevant theoretical concepts of ecological cities at home and abroad. Starting from the ecological city development model, we suggest that ecological cities are based on the concept of an ecological civilization to establish a coordinated and sustainable human habitat for economic, social, and natural development. We explore further and establish an index system based on three subsystems: living and working in peace, resources and environment, and development potential. Through factor analysis, this approach was applicable to cities at a city level in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River. The 28 eco-city developments were ranked for evaluation. According to the scores and development status of the factor analysis model of each ecological city, the development levels of the ecological city in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River were divided into three stages: developed ecological city, developing ecological city, and backward ecological city. The prefecture-level ecological cities in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River included 10 developed ecological cities: Wuhan, Nanchang, Changsha, Yingtan, Jingdezhen, Xinyu, Ezhou, Xiangtan, Huangshi, Pingxiang; six developing ecological cities: Yichun, Zhuzhou, Jingmen, Jiujiang, Loudi, Changde; and 12 backward ecological cities: Fuyang, Fuzhou, Jingzhou, Huanggang, Yiyang, Yueyang, Xiaogan, Ji'an, Shangrao, Hengyang, Changde, and Xianning. The proportion of developed and developing ecological cities in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River has reached 57.14%. Among them, the level of ecological cities in Jiangxi Province is higher than those in Hubei and Hunan provinces.

Abstract:Over a long period of time,the coordinated development of different regions has turned out to be an important concern of the government.Undeniably,considerable achievements have been made in this area thanks to a series of policies and measures,but the overall result is still far from satisfaction.The gap between the advanced and backward regions in particular is barely shortened.On the contrary it exhibits the tendency to forther widening,from which a few national problems crop up.Responding to these problems and based on the realities of Jiangsu province,proposals are made about the fundamental policies,and in this light the basic design is initiated as to the two steps of development from the interactive coordination to the integration of different regional economy.

Abstract:Urban morphology is an overall form of urban spatial structure as an external outline shape of urban space. Study on the evolution of urban morphology and identification of its expansion direction is related to the sustainable development of urban spatial structure. So, it has been an important research field of urban planning subject. This his paper analyzed the evolution of urban morphology and identification of extension direction systematically, taking Nantong City, the typical estuary port city of the Yangtze River as an example, and three phases of distribution maps of construction lands as basic spatial data, aided by the means of GIS. First Firstly, it made some basic measures by Shape Index, Extend Rate, and Fractal Models. Secondly, it adopted the theory of Convex Hull to identify the extension types. Finally, it selected the model of Urban Spatial Expansion Intensity to identify the direction preference of spatial extension. The results show that: 1) The construction of three urban districts in Nantong has essentially complied with the development laws of both new and old urban areas in recent years. 2) The urban area has extended along the Yangtze River, shown as zonal groups. It also shows a trend of diversity of the direction preferences, while following the laws of form evolution and spatial expansion of estuary port cities. 3) Further researches are needed according to the specific situations, such as the development of the location of the urban external transportation, the construction of the deep-water outer harbor etc. ©2010 IEEE.

Abstract:Jiangsu and River Delta are the two areas where the rural-urbanization has been in the highest speed and kept ahead in China. But the character and dynamics of the rural-urbanization in these two areas are very different, which therefore are called South Jiangsu Mode and Pearl River Model respectively. The paper analyses characteristics of the rural-urbanization of the two models: (1) rapid overspreading of built areas; (2) the quality of urbanization has been lagged behind the quantity, and conclude the current trends of them:(1) rural-urbanization becomes more centralized and the size of town larger; (2) the development of social service and infrastructure is more rapid; (3) governments are making more effort to strengthen rural-industries. Then the paper contrasts the dynamics of the rural- urbanization between South Jiangsu Mode and Pearl River Model from two aspects: (1) Rural-industrialization; (2) translation of rural surplus labor forces. It points out that the impetuses of South Jiangsu Model are the rural collectivity capital and local government while the Pearl River Model the foreign capital and the national favorable policies, which is the most cause of the difference of the rural-urbanization process between the relevant two areas. Further, the paper notices that the dynamics of such two models direct to homology. At last, the paper puts forward several strategies according to the main problems that will hinder the rural-industrialization from going further: (1) encourage concentrate development on some potential sites;(2) improve the local economic competitive ability;(3)enhance the development of public utilities; (4) improve the quality of labor forces; (5) advocate to build ecological-town.

Abstract:From the perspective of global city-region,this paper tries to establish the theory of small town's evolution in the Yangtze River Delta.The development characteristics of global city-region,such as globalized production network,high-speed transportation network,high-quality intensive development need,and the upgrading of social consumption demand,are the main external factors that accelerate the differentiated development of small towns.Based on the combination of the external factors and the natural resources of small towns,the current development of small towns in the Yangtze River Delta can be divided into three types,which are metropolitan integration,regional growth pole,and public service center.For the small towns that do not belong to the metropolitan integration type,there are three development trends in the future,i.e.,to become small cities with comprehensive functions,to develop into the featured and vigorous tourism service centers,and to become the public facility centers that provide service for the large rural area.
Competition Pattern and Integration Development of Inland Ports of Yangtze River in Jiangsu Province

Abstract:This paper focuses on the development and integration of inland ports of Yangtze River in Jiangsu province by using several qualitative models such as Port Location Quotient,Division Coefficient,Homogenization etc.It reveals some significant features of the inland port cluster in Jiangsu which are still on the stage far from sufficiently collaborative;there are lots of problems and challenges existing in current development.The results can be concluded as following:(1) Competitive relationship among different ports has been formed (a situation of tripartite confrontation with one superpower,one big-power and many powers) which takes Suzhou as the core,Nanjing as the inferior center,the other ports in southern and middle Jiangsu as the auxiliaries;(2) Excluding the container cargo transportation still maintain the monopoly position in hub ports,the port group construction of Jiangsu section belongs to high level.However,there are still some problems including the excessive competition and serious homogenization among all these ports;(3) Jiangsu inland port cluster is experiencing a period of slow adjustment of structure,in which the scale grade tends to remain a stable increase.Finally,this paper reviews the development trend of the Yangtze River inland port group in Jiangsu from the perspective of the integration of regional governance and provides some policy recommendations about port development in strategy optimization,re-positioning and collaboration.

Abstract:The Yangtze Delta has become a new hot point of FDI in the world since the economic globalization and China becoming new WTO member, especially in the area along the Yangtze River in Jiangsu Province. This paper discusses the regional development under economic globalization, such as, the analysis of the development condition in the area along the Yangtze River in Jiangsu Province ;industrial restructure and shift by across the Yangtze River ;rebuilding of the new development pole; exploitation of the new district by changing the former district ;new strategical development areas, and integration of regional development, etc.At last,the paper points out that in order to promote the development in the area along the Yangtze River in Jiangsu Province,we must arrange space and time by serious planning,and conduct sustainable development.
Niche Theory and Its Role in City Competitiveness——A Case of City Groups Located in Central China

Abstract:Niche, as one of the most important theories of ecology, has the profound directive meaning in the study of human ecosystem, and preferably interprets the phenomenon such as competition, evolvement in different cities. niche theory was introduced into the studies on the development of different cities in this paper, the rules of niche pattern chance of different cities of city groups located in central China were discussed. The results showed that: (1) Urban niche appeard obviously layered difference in the city groups. The niche of each city in the city groups was on the weak side generally, there were few cities which niche was strong, and there were many cities with relative weaker niche.So,it was remarkable that the urban niche among the regions produced a polarization; (2)At present, the level and the spatial difference of urban niche of the city groups was very complicated; (3)There was not a city which possessed predominance in all the four subsystems. Zhengzhou possessed only predominance in the two subsystems-economic and social niches. Its natural and population niches were lower,especially netural niche which was a restrictive factor to Zhengzhou urban niche.

Abstract:Jiangsu area in the Yangtze River Delta includes Nanjing, Wuxi, Suzhou, Changzhou, Zhenjiang, Nantong, Yangzhou and Taizhou; the area which is the important part of the Yangtze River Delta and one of the most essential region to Jiangsu Province's economic development. Through analysis on the status of industrial structure, location predominance and social and economical conditions of the area, this paper points out opportunities for and challenges to the upgrade and shift of industrial structure under the economic globalization and China's open situation as well as some disadvantages such as the shortage of resources, monotonous natural conditions and the similitude of the industrial structure. Then the trend of the regional industrial structure and its development strategy are given. The authors propose that in order to raise the regional industrial structure into a high stage, the second industry should be upgraded and the proportion of the third industry in GDP be improved along with the maintenance of its stable increase in the first industry and its dominance in the second industry. Further, this article especially emphasizes the significance of the high-tech industry to the development of the area's economy, hence the establishment of the base of research and innovation.

Abstract:With a view of coordinating the relationship between regional economic development and water environmental protection in the coastal regions of Jiangsu Province,a typical small river basin downstream Huaihe River was chosen to study in terms of functional zoning.In a watershed scale,a method was established for qualitatively and quantitatively analyzing the regional development taking into consideration of the economical growth,social welfare and environmental conservation,in which five factors related to the water environment were selected such as utilization of the waterway,target for water quality protection,accessibility for cleaner water,communicable status of the waterway and status quo of the water quality.In addition,based on hierarchical analysis of the above five factors,the study region was divided into four different areas to limit the industrial development according to the different levels of industrial pollution,e.g.,only the industrial sectors,which discharge less wastewater and have advanced cleaner production techniques plus higher waster reuse rate,can be allowed to be built in the region that is the extremely restrained.

Abstract:The Yangtze Basin is a region with most flourishing economy and the allocation of all factors is most sound in China. The economy development is very speedy, but some problems exist. The transportation is a major factor to influence the sustainable development of economy and society in the Yangtze Basin.
