Abstract:In this paper, we present a nonlinear two-step explicit P-stable method of fourth algebraic order and 12th phase-lag order for solving one-dimensional second-order linear periodic initial value problems (IVPs) of ordinary differential equations. Based on a special vector arithmetic with respect to an analytic function, the method can be extended to be vector-applicable for multi-dimensional problems directly. Some numerical results are reported to illustrate the efficiency of the method.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a class of non-linear explicit second-order methods for solving one-dimensional periodic initial value problems (IVPs), which are P-stable in the sense of Lambert and Watson and of high-order phase-lag error. For multi-dimensional problems, we introduce a special vector operation such that our methods can be extended to be vector-applicable directly. However, it is not sufficient to investigate the stability behavior of the vector form of the methods based on the scalar test equation y''=-@l^2y. After introducing a new test system and extending the definitions of the interval of periodicity and the phase-lag order, we discuss the stability property and the phase-lag of the vector-applicable methods. The methods are P-stable and of high phase-lag for one-frequency problems. For multi-frequency problems, methods are of only second phase-lag order and may have not a primary interval of periodicity. Some numerical results illustrate the conclusions.

Abstract:AbstractAbstractStable inversion based precise tracking for discrete‐time periodically time‐varying square systems is studied. By means of the lifting technique, the time‐varying system is reformulated equivalently to the time‐invariant lifted system that is analyzed for different cases such as the non‐singular case and the singular case. Combining the stable inversion method of these cases with the optimal state transition method for time‐varying systems, precise tracking is achieved from a limited initial time. The tracking performance of the proposed method is validated through simulations.

Abstract:In this paper we present an improved P-stable trigonometrically fitted Obrechkoff method with phase-lag (frequency distortion) infinity. Compared with the previous P-stable trigonometrically fitted Obrechkoff method developed by Simos, our new method is simpler in structure and more stable in computation. We have also improved the accuracy of the first-order derivative formula. From the numerical illustration presented, we can show that the new method is much more accurate than the previous methods.

Abstract:A two-sided approximation to the periodic orbit of an autonomous ordinary differential equation system is considered. First some results about variational equation systems for periodic solutions are obtained in Sect. 2. Then it is proved that if the periodic orbit is convex and stable, the explicit difference solution approximates the periodic orbit from the outer part and the implicit one from the inner part respectively. Finally a numerical example is given to illustrate our result and to point out that the numerical solution no longer has a one-sided approximation property, if the periodic orbit is not convex.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a new class of second derivative multistep methods. These formulas are shown to be suitable for stiff system of ordinary differential equations. Abstract:We explored the prescribed-time stability (PTSt) of impulsive piecewise smooth differential systems (IPSDS) based on the Lyapunov theory and set-valued analysis technology, allowing flexibility in selecting the settling time as desired. Furthermore, by developing a feedback controller, we employed the theoretical results to evaluate the synchronization behavior of impulsive piecewise-smooth network systems (IPSNS) within a prescribed time frame and obtained novel criteria to guarantee the synchronization objective. A numerical example was presented to validate the accuracy of the results.

Abstract:A new time discretization method for strongly nonlinear parabolic systems is constructed by combining the fully explicit two-step backward difference formula and a second-order stabilization of wave type. The proposed method linearizes and decouples a nonlinear parabolic system at every time level, with second-order consistency error. The convergence of the proposed method is proved by combining energy estimates for evolution equations of parabolic and wave types with the generating function technique that is popular in studying ordinary differential equations. Several numerical examples are provided to support the theoretical result.

Abstract:In this paper, we develop an explicit symmetric six-step method for the numerical solution of second-order initial value problems (IVPs) with oscillating solutions. The proposed method is phase-fitted and incorporates a free coefficient as a parameter to optimize its performance. By exploring a wide range of values for this parameter, we computationally determine the periodicity interval. The objective of this procedure is to identify the range of the parameter's values for which the method remains stable. Based on the output from the periodicity interval analysis, we then aim to define the optimal values for the parameter by numerically solving three initial value problems. The results guided us in identifying these optimal values and confirm the high efficiency of the new method. The method's efficiency is further validated for the chosen optimal parameter value for specific oscillatory problems, where it is compared with well-known phase-fitted methods.

Abstract:The exponential stability and the polynomial stability have been well studied for the exact and numerical solutions of the stochastic pantograph differential equations (SPDEs), while the result on the general decay stabilities is insufficient for SPDEs. In this paper, the sufficient conditions of the almost sure stability with general decay rate of the exact and numerical solutions for SPDEs have been considered. The stability of two different theta numerical methods, namely the split–step theta method and the stochastic linear theta method, have been discussed respectively. From the conditions, we established for the two theta approximations to reproduce the stability of the exact solution, and we see that the conditions for 𝜃∈0,12$$\theta \in \left [0,\frac {1}{2}\right ]$$ are stronger than those for 𝜃∈12,1$$\theta \in \left (\frac {1}{2},1\right ]$$. The bound of the Lyapunov exponent of the split-step theta method is little bigger than that of the stochastic linear theta method for sufficiently small step size. To illustrate the theoretical results, we give two examples to examine the almost sure exponential stability.

Abstract:The paper deals with convergence and stability of the semi-implicit Euler method with variable stepsize for a linear stochastic pantograph differential equation(SPDE). It is proved that the semi-implicit Euler method with variable stepsize is convergent with strong order p = 1/2. The conditions under which the method is mean square stability are determined and the numerical experiments are given.

Abstract:A family of two stage low computational cost symmetric two-step methods with vanished phase-lag and its derivatives is developed in this paper. More specifically we produce:a two-stage symmetric two-step eighth algebraic order method which has the phase-lag and its first, second and third derivatives vanished anda two-stage symmetric two-step sixth algebraic order method, which is P-stable and has the phase-lag and its first and second derivatives vanished. The local truncation error, the interval of periodicity and the effect of the vanishing of the phase-lag and its derivatives on the efficiency of the obtained method are also studied in this paper.

Strong Stability Preserving Integrating Factor Two-step Runge--Kutta Methods

Abstract:Problems that feature significantly different time scales, where the stiff time-step restriction comes from a linear component, implicit-explicit (IMEX) methods alleviate this restriction if the concern is linear stability. However, where the SSP property is needed, IMEX SSP Runge-Kutta (SSP-IMEX) methods have very restrictive time-steps. An alternative to SSP-IMEX schemes is to adopt an integrating factor approach to handle the linear component exactly and step the transformed problem forward using some time-evolution method. The strong stability properties of integrating factor Runge--Kutta methods were previously established, where it was shown that it is possible to define explicit integrating factor Runge-Kutta methods that preserve strong stability properties satisfied by each of the two components when coupled with forward Euler time-stepping. It was proved that the solution will be SSP if the transformed problem is stepped forward with an explicit SSP Runge-Kutta method that has non-decreasing abscissas. However, explicit SSP Runge-Kutta methods have an order barrier of p=4, and sometimes higher order is desired. In this work we consider explicit SSP two-step Runge--Kutta integrating factor methods to raise the order. We show that strong stability is ensured if the two-step Runge-Kutta method used to evolve the transformed problem is SSP and has non-decreasing abscissas. We find such methods up to eighth order and present their SSP coefficients. Adding a step allows us to break the fourth order barrier on explicit SSP Runge-Kutta methods; furthermore, our explicit SSP two-step Runge--Kutta methods with non-decreasing abscissas typically have larger SSP coefficients than the corresponding one-step methods.

Abstract:We consider the stability and stabilization of impulsive stochastic delay differential equations (ISDDEs). Using the Lyapunov-Razumikhin method, we obtain the sufficient conditions to guarantee the pth moment exponential stability of ISDDEs. Then the almost sure exponential stability is considered and the sufficient conditions of the almost sure exponential stability are obtained. Moreover, the stabilization problem of ISDDEs is studied and the criterion on impulsive stabilization of ISDDEs is established. At last, examples are presented to illustrate the correctness of our results.

Abstract:In this paper, a split-step collocation method is proposed for solving linear stochastic Volterra integral equations (SVIEs) with smooth kernels. The Holder condition and the conditional expectations of the exact solutions are investigated. The solvability and mean-square boundedness of numerical solutions are proved and the strong convergence orders of collocation solutions and iterated collocation solutions are also shown. In addition, numerical experiments are provided to verify the conclusions.
Delay-Dependent Exponential Stabilization for Linear Distributed Parameter Systems with Time-Varying Delay

Abstract:This paper extends the framework of Lyapunov–Krasovskii functional to address the problem of exponential stabilization for a class of linearly distributed parameter systems (DPSs) with continuous differentiable time-varying delay and a spatiotemporal control input, where the system model is described by parabolic partial differential-difference equations (PDdEs) subject to homogeneous Neumann or Dirichlet boundary conditions. By constructing an appropriate Lyapunov–Krasovskii functional candidate and using some inequality techniques (e.g., spatial integral form of Jensen's inequalities and vector-valued Wirtinger's inequalities), some delay-dependent exponential stabilization conditions are derived, and presented in terms of standard linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). These stabilization conditions are applicable to both slow-varying and fast-varying time delay cases. The detailed and rigorous proof of the closed-loop exponential stability is also provided in this paper. Moreover, the main results of this paper are reduced to the constant time delay case and extended to the stochastic time-varying delay case, and also extended to address the problem of exponential stabilization for linear parabolic PDdE systems with a temporal control input. The numerical simulation results of two examples show the effectiveness and merit of the main results.
