Abstract:In view of the shortcomings of the existing methods, a new method that can take the decision-maker’s preference into consideration is given by introducing cone ratio data envelopment analysis (DEA) model C~2WH. By using this method, the weights of input and output are not necessary to be given in advance. This method then is used to select vendors for some kind of hardware. In the end, some techniques are given to deal with the exceptive case when selecting the vendors.

Abstract:Supplier selection has become one of the critical issues for enterprise's success,and should be solved by the scientific and reasonable method.Data envelopment analysis(DEA) is a type of linear programming method for appraising relative validity.It is widely used in input-output efficiency analysis.DEA is especially suitable for assessment,which has characteristics such as multi-input,multi-output and poly-objectives.In this paper,based on the studies of all kinds of factors,supplier comprehensive evaluation index system is presented,and supplier selection model based on DEA is established.A case study is then carried out,and the result shows the validity of the model in supplier selection.

Abstract:Best suppliers help manufacturers to gain and sustain a competitive advantage by improving product quality, reducing cost, shortening lead-time and so on. The crucial role played by suppliers in a supply chain renders the selection of a supplier or suppliers a significant work that attracts the attention of both researchers and practitioners. In the literature, data envelopment analysis (DEA) as a nonparametric technique is often applied to conduct a performance analysis. Little attention, however, has been paid to dual-role factors in the supplier selection process. This paper proposes a novel two-step approach to select suppliers in the presence of dual-role factors. As a combination of DEA and two-person zero-sum game theory, our work considers the strategic behaviour of the external environment and is able to handle the supplier selection in a competitive environment. Moreover, the proposed model circumvents the requirement to specify the status of a dual-role factor ahead of an evaluation and is easy to solve. Finally, the applicability of the procedure is illustrated by an application to a data set of 18 suppliers.

Abstract:In this paper, we set up a data envelopment analysis (DEA) based three-way decision approach to solve the "multi-input and multi-output" problem when the decision attributes are "more than one" in rough sets. The estimation of production frontiers of DEA, is used to generate the three regions by three-way decisions: DEA efficiency region, weak DEA efficiency region and DEA inefficiency region, respectively. An empirical study of company efficiency evaluation is employed to validate the reasonability and effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract:An appropriate performance measurement system is an important requirement for the effective management of a supply chain. Two hurdles are present in measuring the performance of a supply chain and its members. One is the existence of multiple measures that characterize the performance of chain members, and for which data must be acquired; the other is the existence of conflicts between the members of the chain with respect to specific measures. Conventional data envelopment analysis (DEA) cannot be employed directly to measure the performance of supply chain and its members, because of the existence of the intermediate measures connecting the supply chain members. In this paper it is shown that a supply chain can be deemed as efficient while its members may be inefficient in DEA-terms. The current study develops several DEA-based approaches for characterizing and measuring supply chain efficiency when intermediate measures are incorporated into the performance evaluation. The models are illustrated in a seller-buyer supply chain context, when the relationship between the seller and buyer is treated first as one of leader-follower, and second as one that is cooperative. In the leader-follower structure, the leader is first evaluated, and then the follower is evaluated using information related to the leader's efficiency. In the cooperative structure, the joint efficiency which is modelled as the average of the seller's and buyer's efficiency scores is maximized, and both supply chain members are evaluated simultaneously. Non-linear programming problems are developed to solve these new supply chain efficiency models. It is shown that these DEA-based non-linear programs can be treated as parametric linear programming problems, and best solutions can be obtained via a heuristic technique. The approaches are demonstrated with a numerical example.

Abstract:Data envelopment analysis (DEA) is a methodology for measuring best relative efficiencies of a group of peer decision-making units (DMUs) that take multiple inputs to produce multiple outputs. However, the traditional DEA model only aims to maximize the efficiency of the DMU under evaluation. This usually leads to very small weights (even zero weights) being assigned to some inputs or outputs. Correspondingly, these inputs or outputs have little or even no contribution to efficiency, which is unfair and irrational. The purpose of this paper is to address this problem. Two new weight-optimized models are proposed based upon the perspective of cross evaluation. Using the results of an Advanced Manufacturing Technology (AMT) example, it is found that all AMTs are fully sorted. The decision maker can easily choose the best AMT. In addition, unreasonable weights of AMTs are effectively avoided.

Abstract:Supplier selection is an important decision-making problem, which involves many quantitative and qualitative factors incorporating vagueness and imprecision. This study proposes a novel fuzzy multi-criteria decision-making framework for supplier selection, which integrates quality function deployment (QFD) and interval data envelopment analysis (DEA). The proposed methodology allows for considering the relationships among the product features and supplier evaluation criteria (SEs) and the impacts of inner dependence among SEs by constructing a house of quality (HOQ). Considering that the number of supplier evaluation indicators is greater than the number of suppliers in some cases, the curse of dimensionality problem usually exists. To solve this problem, we combine the HOQ, interval DEA models, and forward-stepwise selection approach to screen supplier evaluation indicators and select the best supplier(s). Through the two-stage supplier selection method, we can achieve the double screening of indicators and determine the final supplier(s). Finally, the application of the proposed framework is demonstrated through a numerical example and a sensitivity analysis is also carried out to verify the stability of the proposed methodology. This study focuses on supplier selection based on the combination of fuzzy QFD and interval DEA, and also provide a new two-phase methodology for DEA indicator screening.

Abstract:With increasing global awareness of sustainable development and environmental protection, the importance of green supplier selection has become widely recognized. Recently, more and more literature focus on the green supplier selection issue and measurement of supplier performance; the measurement indicators mainly defined two sets of criteria, including management criteria and green criteria. A novel methodology based on data envelopment analysis (DEA) has been developed, which is effective for solving multi-criteria decision problems in supplier selection and evaluating the performance of a set of homogeneous decision-making units (DMUs). To solve the green supplier selection problem, previous studies apply the DEA method by dividing management criteria as inputs and green criteria as outputs. This paper aims to propose a DEA-type green supplier selection methodology by considering the management criteria and green criteria. Unlike the previous method, we define a reasonable and effective division of measurement indicators, where management criteria consist of input variables, desirable and undesirable output variables, while green criteria consist of desirable and undesirable output variables. We also provide an improved model with multi-criteria and multi-objective programming by considering DEA efficiency decomposition, which evaluates management, green, and overall efficiency of candidate suppliers simultaneously. The multi-criteria decision model will help companies to select the best green supplier. To demonstrate the applicability and effectiveness of our proposed model, we present a numerical example at last.

Abstract:Data envelopment analysis (DEA) has been extended to cross-efficiency evaluation to provide better discrimination and ranking of decision-making units (DMUs). However, the non-uniqueness of optimal weights in the traditional DEA models (CCR and BCC models) has reduced the usefulness of the DEA cross-efficiency evaluation method. To solve this problem, we introduce the concept of the satisfaction degree of a DMU towards a set of optimal weights for another DMU. Then, a new DEA cross-efficiency evaluation approach, which contains a maxmin model and two algorithms, is proposed based on the satisfaction degrees of the DMUs. Our maxmin model and algorithm 1 can obtain for each DMU an optimal set of weights that maximises the least satisfaction degrees among all the other DMUs. Further, our algorithm 2 can then be used to guarantee the uniqueness of the optimal weights for each DMU. Finally, our approach is applied to a real-world case study of technology selection.

Abstract:Supplier selection is perceived as important decision-making process in any supply chain management. In this study, the best supplier for a company is being determined based on five main criteria chosen which are delivery, capacity, warranty, cost, and quality. The Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Entropy Measurement (EM) methods are integrated with Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) was applied to set ranking and choose the best supplier as conventional DEA is not able to provide complete ranking among inefficient units. The mathematical modelling is executed using LINGO software. Supplier 3 has obtained efficient result of score 1 for both hybrid method and in Super Efficiency method as the most efficient supplier. Then, the results are validated using Spearman’s Rank Correlation Coefficient (SRCC) which shows positive correlation between both integrated methods. Finally, findings of this study indicate the feasibility of integrated AHP-DEA and EM-DEA for supplier selection with multiple criteria.

Abstract:This paper addresses an advanced manufacturing technology selection problem by proposing a new common-weight multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) approach in the evaluation framework of data envelopment analysis (DEA). We improve existing technology selection models by giving a new mathematical formulation to simplify the calculation process and to ensure its use in more general situations with multiple inputs and multiple outputs. Further, an algorithm is provided to solve the proposed model based on mixed-integer linear programming and dichotomy. Compared with previous approaches for technology selection, our approach brings new contributions. First, it guarantees that only one decision-making unit (DMU) (referring to a technology) can be evaluated as efficient and selected as the best performer while maximising the minimum efficiency among all the DMUs. Second, the number of mixed-integer linear programs to solve is independent of the number of candidates. In addition, it guarantees the uniqueness of the final optimal set of common weights. Two benchmark instances are used to compare the proposed approach with existing ones. A computational experiment with randomly generated instances is further proceeded to show that the proposed approach is more suitable for situations with large datasets.

Abstract:Supply chain (SC) performance evaluation is a complex decision-making problem involving various criteria under uncertainty situations. This paper studies the supply chain performance evaluation of a furniture manufacture industry in the southwest of China. We identify the main uncertainty factors affecting evaluation process, and then model and analyze them using our rough data envelopment analysis (RDEA) models. We create rough DEA by integrating classical DEA and rough set theory. The solution approach of rough DEA is discussed and employed to evaluate the supply chain network operation efficiency of the furniture manufacture industry. Then we give a practical example to illustrate the efficacy and efficiency of the rough DEA model and show how decision-making is improved by the insights the rough DEA model provides.

Abstract:Vendor selection is an important and complex problem, which contains many criteria. The analytic hierarchy process (AHP) can be very useful in reaching a likely result which can satisfy the subjective opinion of the decision maker or the evaluation team. On the other hand, the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) can select vendors objectively with the quantitative data. In this paper, a four-step model based on both AHP and DEA is formulated and applied to a case study. The use of the proposed model can give precise evaluation combining the subjective opinion from the decision makers with the objective data of the relevant factors. In other words, this approach can add subjective factors to the evaluation without losing the objective precision of the selection.

Abstract:Mergers and acquisitions (M&As) have become a more and more important topic in the management and development of companies. Companies usually conduct M&A to preserve or extend their competitive advantages. However, M&As usually fail in real life. For the given bidder company, a critical step to the success of M&A activities is the appropriate selection of target companies. Previous studies rarely considered the profile of the bidder company and its compatibility with candidate target companies. Although data envelopment analysis (DEA) has been applied in M&A, previous studies in this area haven't discussed the selection. In this paper, DEA was applied to support the decision making of mergers and acquisitions for decision making units (DMUs), i.e., the companies. We established a greedy algorithm to implement the selection process. This approach can make up the deficiencies of previous studies in some degree because it considers bidder and target company simultaneously. © 2011 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

Abstract:Data envelopment analysis (DEA) has been extended to cross-efficiency to provide better discrimination and ranking of decision-making units (DMUs). Current researches about cross-efficiency mainly focus on the non-uniqueness of optimal solution of linear programming and information aggregation. As a common distance metric, standardized Euclidean distance is introduced to define the discrimination power between two vectors and the deviation degree for measuring the difference between the individual preference and group ideal preference. Based on above definitions, an alternative method is presented to compare multiple optimal solutions, and further, a universal weighted cross-efficiency model considering both dynamic adjustment of weights and preference formulation is constructed for evaluation and ranking. Two numerical examples are given to illustrate the effectiveness of the comparison method for multiple optimal solutions and weights determination method of DMUs, respectively. At last, a practical application aimed at evaluating environmental treatment efficiency in western area of China is given. Comparative analysis shows that our model could be more moderate, flexible, and general than some available models and methods, which can extend the theoretical research of cross-efficiency evaluation.

Abstract:Supplier selection plays a very important role in supply chain management. This study intends to develop a novel performance evaluation method, which integrates both fuzzy analytical hierarchy process (AHP) method and fuzzy data envelopment analysis (DEA) for assisting organisations to make the supplier selection decision. Fuzzy AHP method is first applied to find the indicators’ weights through expert questionnaire survey. Then, these weights are integrated with fuzzy DEA. We use α -cut set and extension principle of fuzzy set theory to simplify the fuzzy DEA as a pair of traditional DEA model. Finally, fuzzy ranking using maximising and minimising set method is able to rank the evaluation samples. A case study on an internationally well-known auto lighting OEM company shows that the proposed method is very suitable for practical applications.

Abstract:This paper develops a new approach to select a common projection direction for performance evaluation of decision-making units (DMUs) using the data envelopment analysis (DEA) directional distance function. First, we define the concept of directional extensibility of a specific projection direction with respect to a set of inefficient DMUs. The concept shows the projection direction's ability in reducing inefficiencies, simultaneously, for all inefficient DMUs. Using this concept, we propose a model which identifies the common projection direction that has the maximum directional extensibility. However, this common projection direction may contain zero elements. To avoid this problem and to select the final common projection direction, an algorithm is developed to select the common projection direction which is resulted in a trade-off between the directional extensibility and the similarity among the elements of the common projection direction. Our developments contribute by formally defining a concept (i.e., the directional extensibility) which can well reflect a common projection direction's ability in reducing the DMUs' inefficiencies. Moreover, the selected final common projection direction has both good directional extensibility and no zero elements, which helps to guide the inefficient DMUs to develop in a balanced way because the direction suggests the DMUs to improve in all inputs and outputs. Finally, we demonstrate the usefulness of our proposed approach by using an empirical case of 18 logistics companies listed among China's top 500 enterprises in 2018.
