Abstract:Traffic jams arise from an imbalance in the supply of and demand for road space. One can understand that reducing traffic jam means either increasing the supply of road space or reducing the demand for road loading. This work focuses on how to alleviate the demand for peak automotive travel. We propose a new control method to simulate and analyze a traffic jam zone happened in an urban traffic network by using Aimsun. Finally, we also do three scenario cases low, middle and heavy traffic flow works to compare with normal regular traffic light control rules, the diamond control strategy and our new control policy. Simulation results show that our new propose traffic control policy is the best one among the others.

Abstract:This article reinvestigates the mathematical formulations of traffic assignment problems with perception stochasticity and demand elasticity in both the system optimum and user equilibrium principles. Our focus is given to a pair of new general formulations that pose a duality relationship to each other. In this primal-dual modeling framework, we found that the equilibrium or optimality conditions of a traffic assignment problem with perception stochasticity and demand elasticity can be redefined as a combination of three sets of equations and an arbitrary feasible solution of either the primal or dual formulation satisfies only two of them. We further rigorously proved the solution equivalency and uniqueness of both the primal and dual formulations, by using derivative-based techniques. While the two formulations pose their respective modeling advantages and drawbacks, our preliminary algorithmic analysis and numerical test results indicate that the dual formulation-based algorithm, i.e., the Cauchy algorithm, can be more readily implemented for large-scale problems and converge evidently faster than the primal formulation-based one, i.e. the Frank-Wolfe algorithm.

Abstract:It is aimed to construct neural network model to assign flow links under user equilibrium of transportation network. Previous analytical method of traffic assignment under traffic equilibrium status are reviewed, and a method using neural network to simulate traffic equilibrium status is put forward. So the new methods can substitute for traditional method, and quickly finish traffic assignment. It is defined the concept of traffic equilibriums function and traffic equilibriums status, and strict mathematical proof indicates that we can recognize the equilibrium status of traffic flows by neutral network. The principle and method on how to construct, train and evaluate a neural network are also presented. At last, with an example the author explains how to use the algorithm, and to evaluate accuracy and CPU time consuming of the algorithm

Abstract:The concept of network system equilibrium is defined in this paper, based on which the traffic assignment problem is modeled as a nonlinear complementary problem. It is proven that the solution of this model can be obtained by solving a mathematical programming and there is a unique solution to the related mathematical programming. Two examples are studied to verify the new approach, which shows that more reasonable results can be obtained in this way.

Abstract:Traffic assignment in urban transport planning is the process of allocating traffic flows in a network. Traditionally, traffic assignment can reduce travel time or travel costs. As the number of vehicles increases and congestion causes increased emissions, environmental issues in transportation are gaining more and more attention. The main objective of this study is to address the issue of traffic assignment in urban transport networks under an abatement rate constraint. A traffic assignment model based on cooperative game theory is proposed. The influence of vehicle emissions is incorporated into the model. The framework consists of two parts. First, the performance model predicts travel time based on the Wardrop traffic equilibrium principle, which reflects the system travel time. No travelers can experience a lower travel time by unilaterally changing their path. Second, the cooperative game model gives link importance ranking based on the Shapley value, which measures the average marginal utility contribution of links of the network to all possible link coalitions that include the link, and assigns traffic flow based on the average marginal utility contribution of a link with system vehicle emission reduction constraints. The proposed model shows that traffic assignment with emission reduction constraints allows more vehicles in the network with an emission reduction rate of 20% than traditional models.

Abstract:Connected and automated vehicles can reduce the traffic congestion level of the entire network through platoon-driving technologies compared to human-driven vehicles. One promising approach to enhancing platoon-driving technology's efficiency is deploying dedicated lanes or roads for connected and automated vehicles. Since asymmetric interactions between different vehicle types increase road congestion, it is necessary to distinguish routes for efficient traffic management. However, the traditional traffic assignment problem, which uses only user equilibrium as a constraint with no difference in travel time between users, could not be proposed as a globally optimal solution because it generates an infinite number of locally optimal solutions. Recent studies have attempted to overcome the limitations by considering the sum of system-wide travel times as an additional constraint. Their research sought to help propose optimal deployment strategies through the lowest total travel time solution (best-case) or design robust transport planning strategies through the highest total travel time solution (worst-case). However, past studies have not focused on the possibility of the best/worst case appearing in reality. This study focused on the relationship between the two solutions pointed out in past studies and traffic patterns likely to appear in reality. This study interprets the Karush–Kun–Tucker condition of the static traffic assignment problem, considering the asymmetric interaction, and proposes a solution algorithm using discrete dynamics. The proposed algorithm extends the most widely used method in transportation planning research, which can overcome the limitations of asymmetric interaction problems through simple variations. The proposed algorithm can reliably derive two solutions, and entropy theory shows that both solutions are unlikely to appear in reality without additional policies such as dedicated lanes or roads.

Abstract:In terms of the similarity between a road network and a circuit network, this paper demonstrates that Kirchhoff’s current and voltage laws observed in the circuit can be employed in the traffic assignment of the road network. Inspired by the more consummate circuit theory, we put forward a new idea and method of traffic assignment. A set of models is formularized by means of multiobjective nonlinear planning theory, and the solutions are found using MATLAB. An example is provided to prove the feasibility of the new traffic assignment model.

Abstract:The classical Wardrop principle assumes that users minimize either individual travel cost or overall system cost. Unlike the pure Wardrop equilibrium, this study deals with the problem of user equilibrium traffic assignment with game theory. We present a Stackelberg game on the network in which the SO player is the leader and the Cournot-Nash and user equilibrium players are the followers. The Cournot-Nash and user equilibrium players select the route, which is given the SO player's routing. In contrast, the SO player select the routes to minimize total system travel cost. Based on combined model, the traffic assignment method was discussed, and the VI and generalized Lagrange multiplier method was used to get the solution. A simple example is presented. The example result shows that the efficient of Stackelberg model is higher than that of the UE system or SO system.
Balanced control method for road network traffic state

Abstract:In order to alleviate the road network jam,a balanced control method was proposed for the road network state.The road intersection saturation degree was chosen as the traffic state index,a bi-level programming optimization model was built for the balanced control of the road network traffic state to minimize the maximal road network saturation degree.This optimization model was solved by the genetic algorithm to optimize the traffic signal cycle and its green-red split.The balanced control was improved by consideration of the delay index,traffic state,and the relative importance of each intersection.The numerical simulation results showed that the proposed method can effectively alleviate the traffic jam in the critical region.

Abstract:Facing the problem of user equilibrium traffic assignment,a solution for the route traffic flow based on the FrankWolfe algorithm was proposed to avoid enumerating all routes of the network.Under the conditions that a group of destination-based link traffic flows satisfying the user equilibrium and the shortest-path set of each OD(origin-destination) pair of the traffic network were known,a group of user equilibrium path traffic flows can be figured out by the proposed algorithm,and it was proved effective by numerical example.Compared with other methods,the proposed method is superior in memory requirement,calculating results,and computational speed.

Abstract:To study traffic assignment problems when just some nodes on the road network are controlled by traffic control center due to limited traffic control devices,the basic methods and principles of traffic assignment were discussed.Based on the assumptions of travelers' route choice behavior at controlled and uncontrolled nodes,a mixed traffic assignment model was established.The optimal status for the proposed model is that,at uncontrolled nodes,travelers always choose the links with minimum comprehensive link cost from these nodes to the destination,and completely comply with the guidance at controlled nodes.Research shows that the model is equivalent to the SO model when all the nodes are controlled and equivalent to the UE model when all the nodes are uncontrolled.Numerical example of a simple network was presented to illustrate feasibility and rationality of the model.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider a dynamic equilibrium transportation problem. There is a fixed number of cars moving from origin to destination areas. Preferences for arrival times are expressed as a cost of arriving before or after the preferred time at the destination. Each driver aims to minimize the time spent during the trip, making the time spent a measure of cost. The chosen routes and departure times impact the network loading. The goal is to find an equilibrium distribution across departure times and routes. For a relatively simplified transportation model we show that an equilibrium traffic distribution can be found as a solution to a linear program. In earlier works linear programming formulations were only obtained for social optimum dynamic traffic assignment problems. We also discuss algorithmic approaches for solving the equilibrium problem using time-expanded networks.

An Integrated Analytical Process of Traffic Assignment Problems of Braess' Network

Abstract:Braess' network can be regarded as a significant metaphor of human geographical phenomena.By means of this simple model,we can reveal many important geographical principles.Based on the problem of traffic assignment in Braess' network,an integrated analytical process is propounded in this paper for efficiently exploring complex geographical systems.For simplicity,only the linear Braess' network without the third expressway is taken into consideration.The question is as follows: how the traffic flow is assigned between the two routes which have odd symmetric structure.Six methods are exerted to solve this problem,including Lagrange multiplier method(LMM),linear dynamical analysis,numerical simulation,numerical computation,Markov chain,and entropy-maximizing method.In the first place,Lagrange multiplier method is employed to give a preliminary solution.Secondly,a pair of linear dynamic equations is constructed for making deep analysis.The dynamic equations are utilized to make numerical computation and simulation.Further,Markov chain is used to make a prediction analysis.All the five kinds of analysis reach the same conclusion by different routes: the traffic flow should be averagely allocated in the two roads.Finally,the method of entropy-maximizing is employed to bring to light the theoretical foundation of average assignment of traffic flow in the Braess' network.The entropy-maximization of geographical systems suggests the most equity for individuals and efficiency on the whole.All the six methods can be integrated to solve a problem from multifarious views of angles.If the conclusions drawn by different approaches are consistent with each other,the question is clear.However,in practice,some conclusions are not very clear,or even a conclusion based on one method may come into conflict with another one based on a different method.In this instance,the analytical process of multi-views of angles will help us solve the problem more efficiently and rapidly.

Abstract:This paper presents methods to obtain analytical solutions to a class of continuous traffic equilibrium problems, where continuously distributed customers from a bounded two-dimensional service region seek service from one of several discretely located facilities via the least congested travel path. We show that under certain conditions, the traffic flux at equilibrium, which is governed by a set of partial differential equations, can be decomposed with respect to each facility and solved analytically. This finding paves the foundation for an efficient solution scheme. Closed-form solution to the equilibrium problem can be obtained readily when the service region has a certain regular shape, or through an additional conformal mapping if the service region has an arbitrary simply connected shape. These results shed light on some interesting properties of traffic equilibrium in a continuous space. This paper also discusses how service facility locations can be easily optimized by incorporating analytical formulas for the total generalized cost of spatially distributed customers under congestion. Examples of application contexts include gates or booths for pedestrian traffic, as well as launching sites for air vehicles. Numerical examples are used to show the superiority of the proposed optimization framework, in terms of both solution quality and computation time, as compared with traditional approaches based on discrete mathematical programming and partial differential equation solution methods. An example with the metro station entrances at the Beijing Railway Station is also presented to illustrate the usefulness of the proposed traffic equilibrium and location design models.

Abstract:The trip matrix is a table containing traffic demands from each origin to each destination in a road network. It is an essential source of information in every aspect of the transport planning process. It can be estimated from traffic counts on road links by a Matrix Estimation (ME) method. Normally, a trip matrix is sought that produces link flows which are as close as possible to the observed link flows. On the other hand, given a trip matrix, link flows can be determined by a Traffic Assignment (TA) model. In the combined ME and TA problem, a solution pair, trip matrix and link flows may be sought, which are mutually consistent. Alternatively, we may also seek a bi-level solution with the ME problem having priority over TA problem. For a TA problem, a Stochastic User Equilibrium (SUE) assignment model is most desirable because it accounts for both congestion effects and drivers' differences in route choice. In this paper, solution methods for the combined ME and SUE assignment problem are presented. The methods are iterative in nature. At each iteration, a search direction is found by the standard routines of ME and the new method for SUE assignment problem (Maher, 1998). Then an optimal step length is found by a line search. Finally, the current solution is updated to get a new solution for the next iteration. The algorithms have so far been tested on small networks with encouraging results. The paper shows that the algorithms are efficient and are applicable to practical networks. For the covering abstract see ITRD E105584.

Abstract:The traffic network equilibrium problem with capacity constraints is investigated with the help of generalized Lagrangian theory of variational inequality in our paper. It is proved to be equivalent to the generalized Wardrop equilibrium solution. This result is very useful in transportation analysis since the study in Wardrop equilibrium problem is relatively mature. Furthermore, some new concepts are offered.

Abstract:An accelerating strategy to the well-known Frank-Wolfe algorithm for solution of the traffic assignment problem (TAP) is presented here. The Frank-Wolfe algorithm has been widely accepted and recognized by transportation researchers and practitioners as a state-of-the-practice solution method for TAP. With abundant numerical examples, the proposed accelerating strategy was compared with other accelerating methods, such as the parallel tangent technique, Fukushima direction, and Weintraub step size. The computational results successfully indicate that this new strategy is capable of obtaining highly accurate solutions with relatively moderate central processing unit time consumed. The computational results also indicate that the performance of this accelerating strategy is better than state-of-the-art algorithms, such as the restricted simplicial decomposition algorithm and the gradient projection algorithm. The proposed accelerating strategy is easy to implement and suitable for obtaining accurate solutions to TAP because of its economical memory requirement and stable performance, even when large and congested networks are considered.

Abstract:The study of dynamic route guidance model over a general road network has been deployed for some time in intelligent transportation systems (ITS) field. The paper presents the general formulation of the system optimal dynamic traffic assignment (DTA) problems, and enunciates the discrete form model. For the sake of computational convenience, the simplification of the model is explored according to the characteristics of realistic traffic system. Then the algorithm base on Lagrangian relaxation and quasi-Newton iteration is given to solve the simplified problem. Simulation is carried out to show the practicability and efficiency of the algorithm. Moreover some analysis on the simulation and guidance for future studies are presented at the end.
