Abstract:Abstract Integration of production and distribution operations at the scheduling level is one of the most important issues concerned in recent years in supply chain management. We investigate the scheduling problem with job delivery coordination. Concretely, we are given a set of jobs with non-identical processing times and non-identical sizes to be first processed by two parallel-identical machines and then delivered to a common customer by a single vehicle, which has a limited capacity that can carry up to a fixed total size of jobs in one batch. The objective is to minimize the makespan, ie, the time when all the jobs have reached the customer and the delivery vehicle has returned to the machine. The problem does not admit a polynomial time approximation algorithm with worst-case ratio smaller than unless P = NP. By introducing some novel ideas and new methods, including algorithms solving multiple knapsack problem as subprocedures and the rediscovery of the profound nature of the bin-packing algorithm, we propose a polynomial time approximation algorithm with worst-case ratio arbitrary close to . The algorithm, acquired after long-term research containing many earlier related works, is the first algorithm for this kind of problems and its theoretical performance is nearly best.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the classical scheduling problem on parallel machines with capacity constraints. We are given m identical machines, where each machine k can process up to ck jobs. The goal is to assign the n ≤ ∑m k=1 ck independent jobs on the machines subject to the capacity constraints such that the makespan is minimized. This problem is a generalization of the c-partition problem where ck = c for each machine. The c-partition problem is strongly NP-hard for c ≥ 3 and the best known approximation algorithm of which has a performance ratio of 4/3 due to Babel et al.[2]. For the general problem where machines could have different capacities, the best known result is a 1.5-approximation algorithm with running time O(n log n+mn) [13]. In this paper, we improve the previous result substantially by establishing an efficient polynomial time approximation scheme (EPTAS) whose running time is 2 2 log2(1/ ) log log(1/ )) + O(n log n log log n). The key idea is to establish a non-standard ILP (Integer Linear Programming) formulation for the scheduling problem, where a set of crucial constraints (called proportional constraints) is introduced. Such constraints, along with a greedy rounding technique, allow us to derive an integer solution from a relaxed fractional one without violating constraints.

Abstract:We consider the problem of scheduling with renewable speed-up resources. Given m identical machines, n jobs and c different discrete resources, the task is to schedule each job non-preemptively onto one of the machines so as to minimize the makespan. In our problem, a job has its original processing time, which could be reduced by utilizing one of the resources. As resources are different, the amount of the time reduced for each job is different depending on the resource it uses. Once a resource is being used by one job, it can not be used simultaneously by any other job until this job is finished, hence the scheduler should take into account the job-to-machine assignment together with the resource-to-job assignment. We observe that, the classical unrelated machine scheduling problem is actually a special case of our problem when m=c, i.e., the number of resources equals the number of machines. Extending the techniques for the unrelated machine scheduling, we give a 2-approximation algorithm when both m and c are part of the input. We then consider two special cases for the problem, with m or c being a constant, and derive PTASes (Polynomial Time Approximation Schemes) respectively. We also establish the relationship between the two parameters m and c, through which we are able to transform the PTAS for the case when m is constant to the case when c is a constant. The relationship between the two parameters reveals the structure within the problem, and may be of independent interest.

Abstract:This paper considers the scheduling problems with the objective of minimizing the total completion time on two parallel identical machines with given unavailable periods. The jobs are assumed to be nonresumable. If there is one unavailable period on one of the two machines, we prove that SPT has a tight worst-case ratio of 3/2. If there is one unavailable period on each machine, and the unavailable periods on two machines do not overlap, we prove that SPT has a worst-case ratio of 2, which is the smallest possible worst-case ratio that an polynomial time algorithm can have unless P=NP.

Abstract:This paper considers the single machine scheduling problem with an operator non-availability period. The operator non-availability period is an open time interval in which a job may neither start nor complete. The objective is to minimize the total completion time. We prove that the problem is NP-hard, even if the length of the operator non-availability period is smaller than the processing time of any job. We also present an algorithm with a tight worst-case ratio of 20/17.

Abstract:We consider the classical scheduling problem on parallel identical machines to minimize the makespan. There is a long history of study on this problem, focusing on exact and approximation algorithms. It is thus natural to consider whether these algorithms can be further improved in terms of running times. We provide strong lower bounds on the running times of exact and approximation schemes for the classical scheduling problem based on Exponential Time Hypothesis, showing that the best known approximation and exact algorithms are almost the best possible in terms of the running time.

Abstract:We consider the problem of unrelated parallel machine scheduling when the DVS (dynamic voltage scaling) method is used to conserve energy consumption. Given an energy budget, we present (2+epsilon)-approximation algorithms for the makespan minimization problem under two different settings, the continuous model in which speeds are allowed to be any real number in [s(min), s(max)] and the discrete model in which only d distinct speeds are available. We also show how to derive a 2-approximation algorithm if the energy budget is allowed to be slightly exceeded.

Abstract:Uncertainty is an omnipresent issue in real-world optimization problems. This paper studies a fundamental problem concerning uncertainty, known as the beta-robust scheduling problem. Given a set of identical machines and a set of jobs whose processing times follow a normal distribution, the goal is to assign jobs to machines such that the probability that all the jobs are completed by a given common due date is maximized. We give the first systematic study on the complexity and algorithms for this problem. A strong negative result is shown by ruling out the existence of any polynomial-time algorithm with a constant approximation ratio for the general problem unless P=NP. On the positive side, we provide the first FPT-AS (fixed parameter tractable approximation scheme) parameterized by the number of different kinds of jobs, which is a common parameter in scheduling problems. It returns a solution arbitrarily close to the optimal solution, provided that the job processing times follow a few different types of distributions. We further complement the theoretical results by implementing our algorithm. The experiments demonstrate that by choosing an appropriate approximation ratio, the algorithm can efficiently compute a near-optimal solution.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the problem of scheduling weighted jobs on a single machine with a maintenance whose starting time is prior to a given deadline and whose duration is a nondecreasing function of the starting time. We are asked not only to schedule the jobs but also the maintenance such that the total weighted job completion time is minimum. The problem is shown to be weakly NP-hard. In the case that the duration of the maintenance is a concave (and nondecreasing) function of its starting time, we provide two approximation algorithms with approximation ratio of 2 and at most \(1+\sqrt{2}/2+\epsilon\), respectively.

Abstract:We consider a variant of the resource constrained scheduling problem, which originated from a machine scheduling problem. A number of jobs are to be processed on a single machine with a prespecified capacity. Each job has a size and a processing time, and the machine can process a set of jobs simultaneously as long as the total size of the jobs being processed does not exceed the capacity of the machine. The objective is to find a schedule to minimize the total time (i.e., the makespan) to complete all jobs, subject to the machine capacity constraint. For the problem where the machine is completely available at the starting time, we analyze a previously published algorithm and prove that the worst-case ratio of this algorithm is no more than 7/4, which significantly improves the previous result and thus answers an open question about this algorithm. For the problem where the machine is partially available at the beginning, an algorithm is shown to have a worst-case ratio of no more than two. An on-line algorithm is also presented.

Abstract:In this paper the approximability of parallel machine scheduling problems with resource consuming jobs is studied. In these problems, in addition to a parallel machine environment, there are non-renewable resources, like raw materials, energy, or money, consumed by the jobs. Each resource has an initial stock, and some additional supplies at a-priori known moments in time and in known quantities. The schedules must respect the resource constraints as well. The optimization objective is either the makespan, or the maximum lateness. Polynomial time approximation schemes are provided under various assumptions, and it is shown that the makespan minimization problem is APX-complete if the number of machines is part of the input even if there are only two resources.

Abstract:We consider bicriteria scheduling problems with identical machines in parallel and two popular but conflicting objectives, namely, the makespan and the total completion time. Assuming no prioritization of the two objectives, we are interested in the simultaneous optimization of the two objectives and approximation algorithms relative to an ideal schedule – which may not exist – that has both objectives at their minimum. For the problem with a given number of machines, we propose a fast (ρ1,ρ2)-approximation algorithm where ρ1 and ρ2 represent approximation ratios with regard to the makespan and the total completion time, respectively. We also analyze the problem’s inapproximability by proposing a lower bound of the approximation ratio, which cannot be improved by any algorithm.
