Abstract:A two-grid method for the unsteady Navier-Stokes equations modelling viscous incompressible flow is discussed in R2, which consists of finding a solution for a nonlinear problem on a coarse grid and a solution for the Stokes problem on a fine grid. A new fully discrete scheme for the numerical solution of these equations is also considered where the spatial discreteness is the mixed finite elements and the temporal discreteness is the Crank-Nicolson scheme. The stability for this scheme is proved and an L2 error estimate is also given. Compared with the usual finite element method, this method can save a lot of computation time under the same convergence accuracy.

Abstract:This paper develops a fully discrete two-grid mixed finite element scheme of a phase field model for the two immiscible and incompressible flows. In the model, the Navier-Stokes equations and Allen-Cahn equation are coupled by a phase function in which an extra phase induced stress term is added in the Navier-Stokes equations and a fluid induced transport term is added in the Allen-Cahn equation. We use the two-grid method to overcome the computational difficulties arising from the strong nonlinear coupling system. The stability and convergence of the two-grid method are obtained under the proper assumption of time discretization size k , space discretization size h and interface thickness ε . The analysis shows that the two-grid methods can get the same convergence as the classical one-grid methods provided that we choose proper coarse and fine mesh sizes. However, the two-grid methods can save much computational time compared with the one-grid methods. Some numerical experiments are provided to confirm the theoretical analysis.

Abstract:This paper presents a high-accuracy method for solving 2-D incompressible viscous N-S equations in tensor forms. A domain decomposition method was used to divide the computational domain into several regular blocks with the overlapping grid in order to transfer data between sub-domains and to remove numerical singularity caused by domain decomposition. Using the method and algorithm presented above, the flow passing an ellipse was computed and the formation and evolution of the vortex shedding was successfully simulated.

Abstract:Two-level finite element approximation to stream function form of unsteady Navier-Stokes equations is studied. This algorithm involves solving one nonlinear system on a coarse grid and one linear problem on a fine grid. Moreover, the scaling between these two grid sizes is super-linear. Approximation, stability and convergence aspects of a fully discrete scheme are analyzed. At last a numrical example is given whose results show that the algorithm proposed in this paper is effcient.

Abstract:Simple, efficient, and accurate finite difference methods are introduced for 3D unsteady viscous incompressible flows in the vorticity–vector potential formulation on nonstaggered grids. Two different types of methods are discussed. They differ in the implementation of the normal component of the vorticity boundary condition and consequently the enforcement of the divergence free condition for vorticity. Both second-order and fourth-order accurate schemes are developed. A detailed accuracy test is performed, revealing the structure of the error and the effect of how the convective terms are discretized near the boundary. The influence of the divergence free condition for vorticity to the overall accuracy is studied. Results on the cubic driven cavity flow at Reynolds number 500 and 3200 are shown and compared with that of the MAC scheme.

Abstract:It was proved numerically that the Domain Decomposition Method CDDM) with one layer overlapping grids is identical to the block iterative method of linear algebra equations. The results obtained by using DDM could be in reasonable agreement with the results of full-domain simulation. With the three dimensional solver developed by the authors, the flow field in a pipe was simulated by using the full-domain DDM with one layer overlapping grids and with patched grids respectively. Both of the two cases led to the convergent solution. Further research shows the superiority of the DDM with one layer overlapping grids to the DDM with patched grids. A comparison between the numerical results obtained by the authors and the experimental results given by Enayet[3] shows that the numerical results are reasonable.

Abstract:A simplified two-level method for solving the steady two-dimensional incompressible Navier–Stokes equations is investigated in this article. The simplified two-level method involves solving one small nonlinear Navier–Stokes problem on the coarse mesh and one linear Stokes problem (hence, linear with positive definite symmetric part) on the fine mesh. The uniform optimal error estimates with respect to large ν for the standard Galerkin method and the two-level method are proven. Finally, some numerically tests to confirm the theoretical results of the simplified two-level method and the standard Galerkin method are provided.

Abstract:We develop a numerical method to simulate a two-phase compressible flow with sharp phase interface on Eulerian grids. The scheme makes use of a levelset to depict the phase interface numerically. The overall scheme is basically a finite volume scheme. By approximately solving a two-phase Riemann problem on the phase interface, the normal phase interface velocity and the pressure are obtained, which is used to update the phase interface and calculate the numerical flux between the flows of two different phases. We adopt an aggregation algorithm to build cell patches around the phase interface to remove the numerical instability due to the breakdown of the CFL constraint by the cell fragments given by the phase interface depicted using the levelset function. The proposed scheme can handle problems with tangential sliping on the phase interface, topological change of the phase interface and extreme contrast in material parameters in a natural way. Though the perfect conservation of the mass, momentum and energy in global is not achieved, it can be quantitatively identified in what extent the global conservation is spoiled. Some numerical examples are presented to validate the numerical method developed.

Abstract:In this article, a subgrid-sparse-grad-div method for incompressible flow problem was proposed, which is a combination of the subgrid stabilization method and the recently proposed sparse-grad-div method. The method maintains the advantage of both methods: (i) It is robust for solving incompressible flow problem with dominance of the convection, especially when the viscosity is too small. (ii) It can keep mass conservation. Therefore, the method is very efficient for solving incompressible flow. Moreover, based on the Crank–Nicolson extrapolated scheme for temporal discretization, and mixed finite element in spatial discretization, we derive the unconditional stability and optimal convergence of the method. Finally, numerical experiments are proposed to validate the theoretical predictions and demonstrate the efficiency of the method on a test problem for incompressible flow.

Abstract:In this article, a two grid partition of unity finite element method is proposed and investigated for electrically conducting incompressible fluid flows. This algorithm involves solving a much smaller nonlinear problem on a coarse grid, utilizing a partition of unity to decompose reasonably the residual problem into a series of independent subproblems on a fine grid, and carrying out a further coarse correction on the coarse grid. Rigorously theoretical analysis is presented and convergence results indicate that the method could reach the optimal convergence orders with proper configurations between the coarse mesh size H and the fine mesh size h. Finally, some numerical results are reported to verify our theoretical findings.

Abstract:This paper extends the gas-kinetic BGK-NS scheme to an adaptive grid for the viscous flow simulations. The grid movement and adaptation is controlled by a monitor function which may depend on velocity gradient or other flow variables, such as density or pressure. For the viscous flow computation, the use of adaptive mesh much improves the efficiency and accuracy of the method in comparison with the methods with static mesh points. The current method is an accurate and efficient method for the viscous flow computation, where the grid points can be easily moved and concentrated on the regions with large velocity and density gradients, such as the boundary layer and multi-material interface. Many numerical examples validate the current approach for the viscous flow simulations.

Abstract:The two-grid finite element approximation to the stream function form of the stationary Navier-Stokes equations was analyzed. The algorithms involve solving one small,nonlinear coarse mesh system, one linear problem on the fine mesh system, and a linear correct problem on the coarse mesh. The algorithms with the correct problem and without the correct problem were discussed. The algorithms produce an approximate solution with the optimal, asymptotic accuracy for any fixed Reynolds number.
Grid Convergence Study on a Finite Volume Code NSAWET

Abstract:A grid convergence study using the in-house finite volume flow solver NSAWET is presented. Solutions of three two-dimensional flow problems including the isentropic vortex advection, the inviscid flow around NACA0012 airfoil and the turbulent flow over flat plate are compared with theoretical or other numerical data. All the flow conditions, geometries and meshes are obtained from well-recognized public database in order to ensure a fair and effective comparison. The generalized Richardson extrapolation method is adopted for error estimation. Using the Roe’s scheme in NSAWET, results show excellent asymptotic features and formally second-order accuracy. Shock may deteriorate the prediction accuracy of pressure drag due to the order reduction of reconstruction near discontinuity. The so-called hyper-convergence for transonic nonlifting case, where an accuracy much higher than firstorder is observed, may originate from the constant-lift computation. The possible consequences are raised for similar grid convergence studies. Then a process successively composed of verifications on basic numerical properties, pressure drag prediction and friction drag prediction is suggested.

Abstract:A new two-step stabilized finite element method for the 2D/3D stationary Navier-Stokes equations based on local Gauss integration is introduced and analyzed in this paper. The method consists of solving one Navier-Stokes problem based on the P (1)-P (1) finite element pair and then solving a general Stokes problem based on the P (2)-P (2) finite element pair, i.e., computes a lower order predictor and a higher order corrector. Moreover, the stability and convergence of the present method are deduced, which show that the new method provides an approximate solution with the convergence rate of the same order as the P (2)-P (2) stabilized finite element solution solving the Navier-Stokes equations on the same mesh width. However, our method can save a large amount of computational time. Finally, numerical tests confirm the theoretical results of the method.

Abstract:A simplified version of collocated grid system is proposed, which is characterized by adopting the momentum interpolation only for the discretization of mass conservation equation, while the interface velocity used for determining the discretization coefficient is obtained by linear interpolation. To eliminate the effect of the underrelaxation factor on the numerical results, it is suggested that the value of the underrelaxation factor resume to 1 in the computation of momentum interpolation. Three cases are computed and the results are compared with the existing literature, showing the feasibility of the proposed methods.

Abstract:Started with the concept and fundamental of Subgrid Scale stabilized （SGS） method, an improved SSS finite element formulation is proposed to obtain time independent solutions by solving the unsteady incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. Based on some rational approximation and simplification, a new stabilization parameter which has relation with the selective time step size is deduced. As a result, the numerical instability resulting from high Reynolds and/or small time step size is eliminated. Combined with standard k-ε turbulence model and wall function method to estimate turbulent viscosity, the improved SGS method is applied to solve incompressible turbulent flows. The finite element implementation of wall function along with solution of turbulence transport equations is discussed in detail and the positivity preserving limiter for turbulence variables is introduced. A segregated algorithm for time stepping to solve incompressible turbulent flows is developed. The numerical examples of laminar and turbulent flows over a backward facing step are presented in order to show the possibility, stability and high accuracy of the proposed approach for simulating steady incompressible viscous flows.

Abstract:Multigrid techniques together with homotopy method are applied to propose a kind of finite-difference relaxation scheme for 2D steady-state Navier-Stokes equations. The proposed numerical scheme can give convergent results for viscous flows with high Reynolds number. As an example, the results of shear-driven cavity flow with high Reynolds number up to 25000 on fine grid 257��257 are given.
