Abstract:The propagation of flattened Gaussian beams (FGBs) passing through a paraxial optical ABCD system has been studied in detail, where both unapertured and apertured cases have been considered. For the unapertured case, a closed-form propagation expression has been derived, and for the apertured case typical numerical examples have been given to illustrate our results and method.

Abstract:The propagation behavior of the multi-Gaussian Schell-model source through ABCD optical systems and its spreading in the turbulent atmosphere are investigated. We obtain the analytic expressions for the cross spectral density and spectral degree of coherence of such beams in misaligned ABCD optical systems and beam width in atmospheric turbulence. Numerical results show that when the beam is focused, it still has the flattened intensity profile around the optical axis. However, the degree of coherence of field in the focal plane assumes Gaussian-like profile. The turbulence inner scale and correlation width and index M of the source have some effects on beam spreading through atmospheric turbulence.

Abstract:By expanding the rect function into a finite sum of complex Gaussian functions, the propagation of flattened Gaussian beams through an optical ABCD system having aperture is studied in the rectangular coordinate system, and approximate analytical propagation formulas of flattened Gaussian beams are derived. Abstract:We derive an analytical propagation expression for the Airy-Gaussian beam propagating through a thin lens, and calculate numerical examples to investigate its focusing properties. It is shown that the pattern formed in the focus plane can be controlled to demonstrate various geometries through tuning the beam parameters associated with the Airy function part. Moreover, we investigate the influence of the Fresnel number on the propagation properties, and find that decreasing values of the Fresnel number not only increase the size of the focusing spot, but also enhance the depth of field effectively. Our results provide a route for generating perfect squared or elliptic spot with extended depth of field through carefully adjusting the beam and optical system parameters, which may find some potential applications in various areas involving in the special beam profile.

Abstract:The propagation property of flattened Gaussian beams (FGBs) is studied based on the Collins formula, and analytical propagation equations for FGBs with and without an aperture are derived. It is shown that the closed-form expressions for the FGB of order N passing through paraxial ABCD optical systems without an aperture can be written as the combinations of Confluent Hyper-geometric Functions, and that the analytical equations for the FGB of order N passing through apertured paraxial ABCD optical systems may involve Error Functions. The proposed algorithms for the considered beams can save computing time, provide intuitive physical insights, and help to design optical systems. Our results are confirmed and illustrated with numerical examples.

Abstract:By introducing a hard aperture function into a finite sum of complex Gaussian functions, an approximate analytical expression for a Gaussian beam passing through a paraxial ABCD optical system with an annular aperture has been derived. The results could be reduced to the case of circular black screen or circular aperture. Some numerical simulations are also performed and illustrated for the propagation characteristics of a Gaussian beam through a paraxial ABCD optical system with an annular aperture, a circular black screen or a circular aperture.

Abstract:The generalized diffraction integralis used to derive a generalized formula for high-order Bessel–Gaussian beams (HBGBs) through a misaligned first-order ABCD optical system. It is found that, when a HBGB propagates through a misaligned optical system, the beam shape of the output beam is unchanged. However, the center of the output beam is deviated from the optical axis, forming a decentered HBGB. The position of the output beam may be controlled by adjusting the misaligned parameters. Based on the derived formula, the diffraction patterns of HBGBs propagating through a simple misaligned lens system have been calculated numerically. These results may be useful in the application of laser beams for trapping and manipulating a wide variety of particles.

Abstract:The properties of cosine-Gaussian beams propaga ting in free space and propagating through an unapertured thin lens are respectively analyzed and calculated. The closed-form expressions of the diffraction field are obtained by using the general Huygens-Fresnel diffraction integral. Axial intensity and relative focal shift are derived. The calculated results are analyzed and compared.

Abstract:A high-order Bessel-Gaussian mode is introduced to describe hollow beams. The results for high-order Bessel-Gaussian beams propagating through lens focusing system and free space are derived in terms of Collins integral formula. The diffraction patterns and profile for high-order Bessel-Gaussian beams propagating through the above-mentioned optical systems are illustrated.

Abstract:The propagation of flat-topped beams passing through paraxial ABCD optical system is investigated based on the propagation formulas of Gaussian beam. The focal shift of focused coherent flat-topped beam is also studied in detail. Abstract:Using the relations between Hermite and Laguerre-Gaussian(LG) modes and expanding the window function of two-dimensional rectangular hard-edged apertures into a finite sum of complex Gaussian functions,the propagation of complex-argument Laguerre-Gaussian beams through a paraxial optical ABCD system with a rectangular hard-edged aperture is studied.An analytical propagation equation is derived and used to study the diffraction at the rectangular hard-edged aperture and the focusing properties of complex-argument LG beams.The method proposed is useful for studying the beam transformation through an apertured optical system with different geometrical symmetry.

Abstract:The propagation approximation analytic expression and the propagation properties of the high-order Bessel-Gaussian beam through the annular aperture has been studied by using the method of compound Gaussian function.The effect of the output beam caused by different inner and outer radius of the annular aperture also has been analyzed.The results show that,the diffractive properties relative with the width and inner radius of the diaphragm.The same intensity peaks will appear under proper value of the inner radius and width of the annular aperture.

The lens system is taken as an example,the analytical expression of the focusing field distribution of flat-topped light beams is given. Abstract:Based on the generalized Huygens-Fresnel diffraction integral and the expansion of the hard aperture function into a finite sum of complex Gaussian functions, approximate analytical expressions of standard and elegant Laguerre-Gaussian beams passing through a paraxial ABCD optical system with a hard-edged aperture are derived. On the basis of the truncated second-order moments method in the cylindrical coordinate system and the expansion of the hard aperture function into a finite sum of complex Gaussian functions, an approximate method for calculating the generalized beam propagation factor is proposed. Closed-form expressions for the generalized beam propagation factor of a truncated standard and elegant Laguerre-Gaussian beam are derived that depend on the orders of Laguerre polynomial and the beam truncation parameter. Some typical numerical examples are given and compared. It is shown that the results obtained by using the obtained analytical method accord with those by using the numerical integration method.

Abstract:The propagation characteristics of flattened Gaussian beams (FGBs) and super-Gaussian beams (SGBs) have been studied and compared with each other. Numerical illustrative examples have been given. The main result obtained in this paper is that the FGB and SGB with the same M2 factor and beam width demonstrate the very similar propagation and transformation characteristics, including the intensity distribution and diffraction effect due to the aperture, while they propagate through an optical system.

Abstract:The properties of Bessel–Gaussian beams (BGBs) and Bessel beams (BBs) propagating through a fractional Fourier transform (FRT) optical system have been investigated. Abstract:Based on the generalized Huygens–Fresnel diffraction integral and the expansion of the hard aperture function into a finite sum of complex Gaussian functions, the approximate analytical expression of elegant Laguerre–Gaussian beams passing through a paraxial ABCD optical system with an annular aperture is derived. Meanwhile, the corresponding closed-forms for the unapertured, circular apertured or circular black screen cases are also given. The obtained results provide more convenience for studying their propagation and transformation than the usual way by using diffraction integral formula directly. Some numerical examples are given to illustrate the propagation properties of elegant Laguerre–Gaussian beams.
