Abstract:The passive optical ranging was not detected by the enemy on the battleground. The theory of an optical passive ranging method with high precision and it's mathematic model were introduced. The factors that affect the ranging precision and the error range are analyzed to help to design this system.

Abstract:Finding the distance of object in a scene from vision information is an important problem in machine vision. A large number of techniques for passive ranging of unknown objects have been developed over the years (i.e. range from stereo, motion, focus and defocus). Nearly all such techniques may be framed in terms of a differential formalism. In the case of binocular stereo, two different images are taken from cameras at different discrete viewpoints, similarly, difference between consecutive images are often used to determine viewpoint derivatives for structure from motion and two or more different images taken from cameras with different aperture size are used to compute the derivative respect to aperture size for range from focus and defocus method. All this methods may be fallen into a discrete differentiation category. Farid proposed a consecutive differentiation method for range estimation which employs the intensity variation of the images along with the aperture changes to measure the ran-e information. In this paper, we first consider the plenoptic function which is a powerful mathematical tool for understanding the primary vision problem. We then show an algorithm within a differential framework for range estimation based on the assumption of brightness constancy. Finally we show several implementations of passive ranging using this differential alogorithm.
Theoretical Ranging Performance Model That Considers Laser Pointing Errors for Laser Ranging Systems in Detecting Diffusely Reflecting Targets

Abstract:A photon-counting lidar ranging system equipped with a single-photon detector and high-power laser sources for tracking low earth orbit (LEO) diffusely reflecting targets has attracted a large amount of attention, and the ranging performance is the key indicator of a laser ranging system. The fluctuation of the pointing error has a considerable effect on the ranging performance, and a theoretical model can be used to optimize the systematic parameters when the ranging system is designed. In this paper, the joint probability distribution function of the laser pointing error is first derived, from which an improved lidar equation that considers the pointing error is derived. The energy expectation value of laser illuminating LEO uncooperative targets is calculated and analyzed by this analytical expression. A Monte Carlo method is used to verify the energy expectation value, and the simulation results match the theoretical results well. The average signal photon number (calculated by the improved lidar equation) also matches well with the experiment conducted by the Shanghai Astronomical Observatory station. Next, the range performance model consists of the range walk error, and the ranging precision is further developed; the results indicate that the range walk error and ranging precision caused by the pointing error are increased to 31.75 cm and 2.5 cm, respectively, when the laser source is powerful (similar to 2 J) and the pointing error is approximately 1 ''. The value of the pointing error should be constrained to be less than 20% of the laser divergence angle to avoid a significant influence on the ranging performance. Theoretical Model and Correction Method of Range Walk Error for Single-Photon Laser Ranging

Abstract:Single-photon laser ranging is a new generation of lidar which represents the future lidar development trend. It uses the single photon detector as the receiving device. Due to the fact that single-photon detector possesses the ultra-high sensitivity, the single-photon laser ranging is much easier to achieve the high density as well as the high coverage target sampling. However, the existence of the range work error in single-photon laser ranging, resulting from the fluctuation in the number of signal photoelectrons restricts the improvement of the ranging accuracy. In this paper, the range walk error model based on the lidar equation and the statistical property of single-photon detector is established. Then the relation between the range walk error and the number of signal photoelectrons is also derived. The range walk error of single-photon laser ranging is predicted and the corresponding compensation for the original result is obtained, with the derived function and the detection probability model of single-photon laser ranging. The experiment for its proof is also carried out. In the experiment, the number of signal photoelectrons is changed by the different attenuators for the same target and at the same distance. When the attenuator is changed, the pulse width of echo signal changes very little (about 3.2 ns). However, the average number of signal photoelectrons varies between 0.03 counts and 4.3 counts. So the range walk error, resulting from the fluctuation in the number of signal photoelectrons cannot be ignored. For example, when using an attenuation of 1/10 pass rate, the average number of signal photoelectrons is about 4.3 counts and the range walk error is almost 46 cm, which is the main factor of the range error. The reduction of the range walk error is achieved by applying the correction of the range walk error in this paper. After correction, the standard deviation of the range walk error decreases significantly from 15.17 cm to 1.16 cm. The mean absolute error is also reduced from 11.56 cm to 0.99 cm. Generally, the range walk error has an unnegligible influence on the ranging accuracy. The experimental result confirms that the theoretical model is accurate. It also shows that the bigger the number of the received signal photoelectrons, the greater the range walk error is, and the accuracy of single-photon laser ranging is improved by applying the technique proposed in this paper. Briefly, this paper presents the technical method of optimizing the design and evaluating the performance of single-photon laser ranging.

Abstract:A new method of long-distance ground-based validation for high-precision inter-satellite ranging system is proposed.A piece of optical fiber with a length of 100 km is used as the long-distance signal path.The drift of the optical fiber transmission delay is suppressed substantially by measuring the carrier phase and then feedback controlling the optical delay line.In this way,the total transmission delay of the optical path remains stable.The phase transfer relationship of the system and the main noise in the system are analyzed meanwhile the corresponding models are established in this paper.Simulation and system experiments are performed to demonstrate that the actual accuracy meets the requirements of the system which can be used in the long-distance validation of a high-precision ranging system.

Abstract:Ranging performance is the key indicator for a ranging lidar system, and a theoretical ranging performance model can be used for optimizing systematic parameters when designing a lidar system. The fluctuation of the signal photon numbers introduces range walk error to photon-counting lidars that can be as high as tens of centimeters. In this paper, based on the lidar equation and the statistical property of photon-counting detectors, a theoretical ranging performance model for photon-counting lidars with multiple detectors is first derived. Next, a theoretical correction method for offsetting range walk error is proposed, as verified by experiments using a Gm-APD (Geiger mode avalanche photodiode) lidar system. The results indicate that multiple detectors are very useful to maintain a consistent ranging precision when the mean received signal photons are variable. With a 1600 repetitive ranging measurement, the new method can achieve a centimeter ranging accuracy, with a mean and standard deviation of the residual errors of 1.14 cm and 1.23 cm, respectively. This new method is potentially suitable for a satellite photon-counting lidar system such as ICESat-2, as only a certain number of repetitive measurements, the time tag, and a certain number of triggered detectors are required to offset the range walk error.

The working principle of the system was introduced and the calculating equations for the range finding system were given. The principle of the control circuit and the key problems in circuit design were discussed. The range finding experiments have been carried out using this circuit. The experimental data and the conclusions were obtained.

Abstract:A passive ranging method is proposed based on waveguide invariant.The receive Low frequency analysis record(LOFAR) spectrum contain parabola striations when the wideband target pass by the Closest Point of Approach(CPA).We can extract the striations Through suitable image processing technique such as HOUGH transform,and then derive the waveguide invariant,finally estimate the range of the target.Vector LOFARgram contain particle velocity information has higher SNR than scalar LOFARgram which can improve the precision of range estimate.The method can estimate the range of the CPA with high precision for both simulation and experimental data.In estimating the CPA range,both the experience value and the measuring value of the waveguide invariant are used,result show that the measuring value is more credible.

Abstract:The accuracy of microwave ranging is mainly limited by the frequency instability of the oscillator that generates the carrier phase signal. A dual transponder carrier ranging method is used to minimize the oscillator noise by combining the reference and the to-and-fro measurements. This ranging approach together with pseudo-noise ranging or other means can be used to measure the inter-satellite distance with a high precision. The pseudo-noise ranging system or other ranging systems help to solve the integer circles while the dual transponder ranging system guarantees the accurate fractional circle. The two satellites work in the master-slave mode. The range measurements are derived on the master satellite while the slave satellite just coherently transfers the received signal, so that the dual transponder ranging system does not need to rely on the time tagging system to synchronize the two satellites. This study first describes the dual transponder carrier ranging system and shows how the system removes most of the oscillator noise components effectively. Then, a detailed design scheme on the frequency planning of the ranging system is presented and the supporting analysis illustrates the feasibility of this system. Based on the design innovation, a laboratory demonstration system is assembled to verify the realizability of the dual transponder ranging system. The experimental results demonstrate that a high level of accuracy (about 30 μm under laboratory circumstance) can be achieved by the use of the proposed dual transponder carrier ranging system.

Abstract:A high-precision pseudo-noise ranging system is often required in satellite-formation missions. But in an actual PN ranging system, digital signal processing limits the ranging accuracy, only level up with meter-scale. Using non-integer chip to sample time ratio, noncommensurate sampling was seen as an effective solution to cope with the drawback of digital effects. However, researchers only paid attention to selecting specific ratios or giving a simulation model to verify the effectiveness of the noncommensurate ratios. A qualitative analysis model is proposed to characterize the relationship between the range accuracy and the noncommensurate sampling parameters. Moreover, a method is also presented which can be used to choose the noncommensurate ratio and the correlation length to get higher phase delay distinguishability and lower range jitter. The simulation results indicate the correctness of our analyses and the optimal ranging accuracy can be up to centimeter-level with the proposed approach.

Abstract:In this paper, a random access inter-satellite ranging (RAISR) system is designed. The ranging accuracy is optimized by an algorithm to greatly improve the ranging accuracy. This paper verifies the feasibility of the RAISR system through a series of theoretical analysis, numerical simulation, hardware system design and testing. The research work brings the solution to the design and accuracy optimization problem of the RAISR system, which eliminates the main error caused by the satellite dynamic characteristics and frequency source drift of the RAISR system. The accuracy of the measurement system has been significantly improved.

Abstract:A passive ranging method is proposed based on waveguide invariant analysis. Abstract:A dual transponder carrier ranging method can be used to measure inter-satellite distance with high precision by combining the reference and the to-and-fro measurements. Based on the differential techniques, the oscillator phase noise, which is the main error source for microwave ranging systems, can be significantly attenuated. Further, since the range measurements are derived on the same satellite, the dual transponder ranging system does not need a time tagging system to synchronize the two satellites. In view of the lack of oscillator noise analysis on the dual transponder ranging model, a comprehensive analysis of oscillator noise effects on ranging accuracy is provided. First, the dual transponder ranging system is described with emphasis on the detailed analysis of oscillator noise on measurement precision. Then, a high-fidelity numerical simulation approach based on the power spectrum density of an actual ultra-stable oscillator is carried out in both frequency domain and time domain to support the presented theoretical analysis. The simulation results under different conditions are consistent with the proposed concepts, which makes the results reliable. Besides, the results demonstrate that a high level of accuracy can be achieved by using this oscillator noise cancelation-oriented ranging method.

Abstract:The most dominant error source for microwave ranging is the frequency instability of the oscillator that generates the carrier phase signal. The oscillator noise is very difficult to filter due to its extremely low frequency. A dual transponder carrier ranging method can effectively minimize the oscillator noise by combing the reference phase and the to-and-fro measurement phase from the same single oscillator. This method does not require an accurate time tagging system, since it extracts phases on the same satellite. This paper analyzes the dual transponder carrier ranging system by simulation of the phase measurements with comprehensive error models. Both frequency domain and time domain noise transfer characteristics were simulated to compare them with dual one-way ranging. The simulation results in the two domains conformed to each other and demonstrated that a high level of accuracy can also be achieved by use of the dual transponder carrier ranging system, with relatively simple instruments.

Abstract:In order to propose a efficient, accurate and structure-simplified positioning system, the positioning method based on depth information was studied upon the foundation of the research on existing traditional ultrashort baseline(USBL) positioning system (method based on range). According to the formulas derivation, the positioning error of the depth method and the range method were compared. The numerical simulation analysis of the positioning error was carried out, under the combination of positioning error and Cramer-Rao lower bound(CRLB) theory of the delay estimation and the phase estimation. The results show that, in the case of long range positioning, the positioning accuracy based on depth information is higher than that of the range method, especially at high signal-to-noise ratio(SNR). In addition, the depth-based system also has the advantages of simple structure and fast positioning because the signal round-trip time is unnecessary to be measured.

Abstract:Based on the principle of binocular parallax, this paper designs a simple. practical. fast and convenient passive real-time video monitoring ranging system. The system realizes the real-time video monitoring ranging algorithm of the system and analyzes the accuracy and the error of the ranging system. By doing experiments, the algorithm turns out to be of simple ranging method, good real-time and stability, high accuracy and simple equipments. Another advantage: the system doesn't send signals while working. so it is convenient to conceal yourself, thus having a high safety. Therefore, the system has great application values in the fields like air defense for strategic points, land and sea defense monitoring, real-time monitoring of the battlefield, etc.

Abstract:An inter-satellite ranging method without GPS system in formation-flying satellites is presented.In order to meet the request of satellite miniaturization,ranging function is integrated with the original inter-satellite communication system without adding hardware equipments.By taking the traditional responder pattern as the ranging methods,and calculating the time delays in the system to distance,the obtained ranging precision can reach decades of meters.To improve the ranging precision,the factors affecting it are analyzed,and a probability compensation algorithm is proposed using the error compensation theory.Then a theoretical formula is settled about ranging packages at different risk probability and different ranging precision,which can increase the ranging precision by a number magnitude.

Abstract:An novel analysis method of line-of-sight(LOS) measurement error of multiple factors is proposed for the space-based optical sensor.A measurement model is established using the transformation from target position to focal plane.Each error source of the line-of-sight error is analyzed.The formulas among line-of-sight measurement error in earth centered inertial coordination and satellite orbit error,satellite attitude error,sensor pointing error,instantaneous field of view of the sensor are derived.The efficiency of this analysis method is verified by a Monte Carlo simulation.Some results can provide references to engineering applications.
Performance Analysis of an Indoor UWB Ranging System

Abstract:To evaluate the ranging performance of impulse radio ultra wideband (IR-UWB) signals, an experiment is performed in a typical indoor environment. In order to mitigate the ranging error caused by theoretical algorithm and practical circuits, one way-time difference of the arrival (OW-TDOA) ranging method and corresponding approaches are proposed and carried out according to the structure of UWB transceivers. Generalized maximum likelihood (GML) estimator based on energy detection is applied for the time of arrival estimation. The obtained results show that this UWB ranging system can achieve a relative high ranging accuracy in a multipath environment (e.g. about 5 cm at ranges up to 6 m), which is practical and meaningful for many sensor applications.

Abstract:According to the space geometry site relationship between passive buoys and target in multi-base aviation searching submarine system based on time delay, the target site mathematical model is established, and the relationship between target site and time delays of acoustic signal transmitting to passive buoys, deployed distance and acoustic speed is built. On this basis, the effect of SNR, receiver bandwidth, signal center frequency and observation time on time delay estimation according to Cramer-Rao bound of time delay variance is analyzed, and the effect of these parameters on target localization error is analyzed further. Finally, simulation is done to analyze the established localization and error models.

Abstract:Single-photon detectors and time-correlated single-photon counting techniques have been widely used in pulse laser ranging system and three-dimensional imaging systems. Analyzing the factors influencing detection precision will improve the performance of ranging system. In this paper, a theoretical model of single photon ranging system based on TCSPC was established and the main factors affecting the accuracy was analyzed. The main factors included laser pulse intensity and pulse width of echo signal statistics waveform and the latter depended on laser pulse width and time jitter of detector. And simulation of the detection process by Monte Carlo method was used to get the specific influence of the above factors on measurement accuracy. Finally, an experimental single photon ranging system is built in lab. The system has an accuracy of 4 mm about the target 10 m away by experiment and the accuracy verifies the simulation results under the same parameters.
