Abstract:The classical thermodynamics reflects the significant relationship between the heat and the temperature. On the basis of the relationships, according to the mathematical derivation, this paper structures the conceptions of generalized heat, generalized thermodynamic temperature, generalized entropy and so on. The series of conceptions in the classical thermodynamics is merely a special case of the generalized thermodynamics. Based on these conceptions of generalized thermodynamics, this paper presents the new expressions of the first law and the second law of thermodynamics. In other words, these expressions are endued with new explanations. The Eq. LZ = kTS given by this paper provides theoretical basis for these new expressions.

Abstract:In this paper, a generalized heat transport equation including relaxational, nonlocal and nonlinear effects is provided, which contains diverse previous phenomenological models as particular cases. The aim of the present work is to establish an extended irreversible thermodynamic framework, with generalized expressions of entropy and entropy flux. Nonlinear thermodynamic force-flux relation is proposed as an extension of the usual linear one, giving rise to the nonlinear terms in the heat transport equation and ensuring compatibility with the second law. Several previous results are recovered in the linear case, and some additional results related to nonlinear terms are also obtained.

Abstract:Statistical thermodynamics of small systems shows dramatic differences from normal systems. Parallel to the recently presented steady-state thermodynamic formalism for master equation and Fokker-Planck equation, we show that a ``thermodynamic'' theory can also be developed based on Tsallis' generalized entropy $S^{(q)}=\sum_{i=1}^N(p_i-p_i^q)/[q(q-1)]$ and Shiino's generalized free energy $F^{(q)}=[\sum_{i=1}^Np_i(p_i/\pi_i)^{q-1}-1]/[q(q-1)]$, where $\pi_i$ is the stationary distribution. $dF^{(q)}/dt=-f_d^{(q)}\le 0$ and it is zero iff the system is in its stationary state. $dS^{(q)}/dt-Q_{ex}^{(q)} = f_d^{(q)}$ where $Q_{ex}^{(q)}$ characterizes the heat exchange. For systems approaching equilibrium with detailed balance, $f_d^{(q)}$ is the product of Onsager's thermodynamic flux and force. However, it is discovered that the Onsager's force is non-local. This is a consequence of the particular transformation invariance for zero energy of Tsallis' statistics.

Abstract:The governing equations for heat transfer and fluid flow are often formulated in a general form for the simplification of discretization and programming, which has achieved great success in thermal science and engineering. Based on the analysis of the popular general form of governing equations, we found that energy conservation cannot be guaranteed when specific heat capacity is not constant, which may lead to unreliable results. A new concept of generalized density is put forward, based on which a new general form of governing equations is proposed to guarantee energy conservation. A number of calculation examples have been employed to verify validation and feasibility.

Abstract:Exergy is the ability of the maximum work done to the objective (relative) outside when the system changes from any state to its dead state. Exergy stems from the gaps of intensive properties between its present state and its dead state. Generalized differential expression of exergy is advanced without any premise conditions, which is composed of generalized intensive and extensive (additive) properties. Any form of exergy can be deduced out from this generalized expression, only if its characteristic intensive and extensive parameters are known. That the exergy of any closed system is never below zero has been proved.

Abstract:Gibbs–Duhem equation is one of the fundamental equations in thermodynamics, which describes the relation among changes in temperature, pressure and chemical potential. Thermodynamic system can be affected by external field, and this effect should be revealed by thermodynamic equations. Based on energy postulate and the first law of thermodynamics, the differential equation of internal energy is extended to include the properties of external fields. Then, with homogeneous function theorem and a redefinition of Gibbs energy, a generalized Gibbs–Duhem equation with influences of external fields is derived. As a demonstration of the application of this generalized equation, the influences of temperature and external electric field on surface tension, surface adsorption controlled by external electric field, and the derivation of a generalized chemical potential expression are discussed, which show that the extended Gibbs–Duhem equation developed in this paper is capable to capture the influences of external fields on a thermodynamic system.

Abstract:Based on a multiple stage BGK-type collision model and the Chapman–Enskog expansion, the corresponding macroscopic gas dynamics equations in three-dimensional space will be derived. The new gas dynamic equations have the same structure as the Navier–Stokes equations, but the stress strain relationship in the Navier–Stokes equations is replaced by an algebraic equation with temperature differences. In the continuum flow regime, the new gas dynamic equations automatically recover the standard Navier–Stokes equations. The current gas dynamic equations are natural extension of the Navier–Stokes equations to the near continuum flow regime and can be used for near continuum flow study.

Abstract:A unified treatment of general fluid thermodynamics is developed to handle fluid flows over their entire thermodynamic states. The analysis is based on the concepts of partial-mass and partial-density properties, and accommodates thermodynamic non-idealities and transport anomalies in the transcritical regime. The resultant routine is incorporated into a preconditioning scheme. All the thermophysical properties and numerical Jacobian matrices are derived directly from fundamental thermodynamic theories, rendering a robust algorithm valid for fluid flows at all speeds and at all thermodynamic states. As a specific example, a modified Soave–Redlich–Kwong equation of state is employed to obtain the fluid p–V–T properties. Several test cases concerning supercritical droplet vaporization in both quiescent and convective environments are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the present algorithm.

Abstract:Multiplying the balance equation of a basic extensive quantity by the conjugate basic intensive quantity,a generalized dynamic equation of energy transfer and conversion is derived,which indicates the transfer and conversion relation between any specified form of energy and the others.With this generalized equation,the transfer and conversion equation of any form of energy can be derived.The transfer and conversion equations of kinetic,chemical,pressure(strain) and thermal energy,which are commonly used in engineering, were given.The total energy equation is also obtained from the component equations.In these equations,terms appear which explicitly reveal conversions between different forms of energy,including the reversible and irreversible conversions.These equations can enhance our understanding of energy transfer and conversion processes,which could lead to create new energy-conversion and energy-utilization technology.

Abstract:The general expressions for some important thermodynamic parameters of gases in an arbitrary process, which include the heat capacity, expansion coefficient, pressure coefficient and compressibility, are de-rived.The equation of state of the van der Waals gas and the generalized Redlich-Kwong equation of state are used to discuss the thermodynamic properties of real gases in some concrete processes.The results obtained can be used to derive not only some important contents in literature but also some new significant conclusions.

Abstract:A general and simple state equation for all gases is proposed based on the theory that the elastic collision between the boundary and gas molecules contributes the pressure, whilst the completely inelastic collision contributes the exchange of heat between the gas and the surrounding via boundary. In addition, at the high density and temperature, the high frequency of collision abates the distance of molecular motion, thus the effect of molecular mass is significant. Therefore, the gravity is introduced into the state equation. The general state equation covers the whole temperature range below the critical temperature. The full thermodynamic data of liquid-gas equilibrium at saturation of 39 substances including the light and heavy water are used for the fitting of equation. The general state equation fits the reference data well except the temperature near to the critical temperature. Moreover, the theory is applicable for the liquid, and the calculation of thermodynamic parameters such as the specific heat capacity.

Abstract:Thermomass theory was developed to deal with the non-Fourier heat conduction phenomena involving the influence of heat inertia. However, its structure, derived from an analogy to fluid mechanics, requires further mathematical verification. In this paper, General Equation for Non-Equilibrium Reversible-Irreversible Coupling (GENERIC) framework, which is a geometrical and mathematical structure in nonequilibrium thermodynamics, was employed to verify the thermomass theory. At first, the thermomass theory was introduced briefly; then, the GENERIC framework was applied in the thermomass gas system with state variables, thermomass gas density ρh and thermomass momentum mh, and the time evolution equations obtained from GENERIC framework were compared with those in thermomass theory. It was demonstrated that the equations generated by GENERIC theory were the same as the continuity and momentum equations in thermomass theory with proper potentials and eta-function. Thermomass theory gives a physical interpretation to the GENERIC theory in non-Fourier heat conduction phenomena. By combining these two theories, it was found that the Hamiltonian energy in reversible process and the dissipation potential in irreversible process could be unified into one formulation, i.e., the thermomass energy. Furthermore, via the framework of GENERIC, thermomass theory could be extended to involve more state variables, such as internal source term and distortion matrix term. Numerical simulations investigated the influences of the convective term and distortion matrix term in the equations. It was found that the convective term changed the shape of thermal energy distribution and enhanced the spreading behaviors of thermal energy. The distortion matrix implies the elasticity and viscosity of the thermomass gas.

Abstract:The entropy production in classical irreversible thermodynamics is expressed as a bilinear form of generalized (driving) forces and conjugated (driven) fluxes, which suffers from the arbitrary decomposition of the forces and the fluxes, and the possible negative entropy production in non-Fourier heat conduction problems (heat waves). This paper presents a general form of the entropy production for heat conduction based on the thermomass model, which is the product of the friction force and the drift velocity of the thermomass divided by the temperature; it holds true for both Fourier and non-Fourier heat conduction. Then a generalization of the entropy production is given for other kinds of linear and nonlinear transport processes. The general expression for entropy production is consistent with that given by extended irreversible thermodynamics, where the system entropy depends not only on the classical variables, but also on the dissipative fluxes, for example, the heat flux in heat conduction problems.

Abstract:This paper proposed the judgment rules of general corresponding-states equations andtransformation methods of reduced parameters for general corresponding-states equations.The general corresponding-states equation of specific enthalpy of saturated liquid wasobtained. This equation was checked against by standard data of 25 working fluids: theequation agrees with the available data with average deviation of--0.04% and averageabsolute deviation of 0.5%. The theory has modified the traditional opinion that the reducedproperties is only expressed as the functions of the critical properties, and will lay afoundation for establishing general corresponding-state equations of other thermodynamicproperties of working fluids.

Abstract:We analyze an autonomous micro-engine as a closed quantum mechanical system, including the work it performs and the fuel it consumes. Our model system shows by example that it is possible to transfer energy steadily and spontaneously between fast and slow degrees of freedom, in analogy to the way combustion engines convert chemical energy into work. Having shown this possibility, we observe close analogies between the closed-system quantum dynamics of our micro-engine and the First and Second Law of Thermodynamics. From these analogies we deduce a generalized formulation of thermodynamics that remains valid on the micro-scale.

The Micromorphic Approach to Generalized Heat Equations

Abstract:In this paper, the micromorphic approach, previously developed in the mechanical context is applied to heat transfer and shown to deliver new generalized heat equations as well as the nonlocal effects. The latter are compared to existing formulations: the classical Fourier heat conduction, the hyperbolic type with relaxation time, the gradient of temperature or entropy theories, the double temperature model, the micro-temperature model or micro-entropy models. A new pair of thermodynamically consistent micromorphic heat equations are derived from appropriate Helmholtz-free energy potentials depending on an additional micromorphic temperature and its first gradient. The additional micromorphic temperature associated with the classical local temperature is introduced as an independent degree of freedom, based on the generalized principle of virtual power. This leads to a new thermal balance equation taking into account the nonlocal thermal effects and involving an internal length scale which represents the characteristic size of the system. Several existing extended generalized heat equations could be retrieved from constrained micromorphic heat equations with suitable selections of the Helmholtz-free energy and heat flux expressions. As an example the propagation of plane thermal waves is investigated according to the various generalized heat equations. Possible applications to fast surface processes, nanostructured media and nanosystems are also discussed.

Abstract:We propose a formal extension of thermodynamics and kinetic theories to a larger class of entropy functionals. Kinetic equations associated to Boltzmann, Fermi, Bose and Tsallis entropies are recovered as a special case. This formalism first provides a unifying description of classical and quantum kinetic theories. On the other hand, a generalized thermodynamical framework is justified to describe complex systems exhibiting anomalous diffusion. Finally, a notion of generalized thermodynamics emerges in the context of the the violent relaxation of collisionless stellar systems and two-dimensional vortices due to the existence of Casimir invariants and incomplete relaxation. A thermodynamical analogy can also be developed to analyze the nonlinear dynamical stability of stationary solutions of the Vlasov and 2D Euler-Poisson systems. On general grounds, we suggest that generalized entropies arise due to the existence of ``hidden constraints'' that modify the form of entropy that we would naively expect. Generalized kinetic equations are therefore ``effective'' equations that are introduced heuristically to describe complex systems.

Abstract:The generalized Gibbs free energy and enthalpy is derived in the framework of nonextensive thermodynamics by using the so-called physical temperature and the physical pressure. Some thermodynamical relations are studied by considering the difference between the physical temperature and the inverse of Lagrange multiplier. The thermodynamical relation between the heat capacities at a constant volume and at a constant pressure is obtained using the generalized thermodynamical potential, which is found to be different from the traditional one in Gibbs thermodynamics. But, the expressions for the heat capacities using the generalized thermodynamical potentials are unchanged.

Abstract:Maxwell equal area law is an important and traditional analytical tool in thermodynamic phase transition, especially in the calculation of gas-liquid phase transition, which reconciles the theoretical calculation with the experimental results. Undoubtedly, its importance is also self-evident for the black hole thermodynamic system. In this study, we construct a generalized Maxwell equal area law, which allows different states of thermodynamic systems to be within the generalized free energy. The black hole thermodynamic characteristics are spontaneously emerged in the free energy landscape. Furthermore, by analytic continuation, we utilize the properties of analytical functions to investigate some universal characteristics of thermodynamic phase transitions in black holes, and preliminarily establish the counterpart of thermodynamic phase transitions in the complex domain.
