Abstract:State-of-the-art polypyrrole nanofiber-based nanoarchitectonics can be generally fabricated by electrospinning, interfacial polymerization and reactive template methods. Even though analogous nanofiber morphologies and nanofibrous network architectures can be obtained by these methods, the structural details and structural complexities may alter significantly as different synthesis methods are applied. For the electrospinning technique, on one hand, nanofibers can be directly obtained by spinning polypyrrole containing dopes; on the other, the electrospun nanofiber mats can be used as templates to direct the nanofiber formation; a two-step fabrication process, including the electrospinning of polymer nanofiber mats and deposition of polypyrrole on the polymer nanofibers' surface, is generally employed. By tuning the electrospinning parameters, the composition, diameter, morphology, and alignment of the as-obtained electrospun nanofiber mat can be effectively controlled, which may allow the fabrication of polypyrrole nanofibers with sophisticated nanostructures and nanoarchitectures. Interfacial polymerization is capable of generating polypyrrole nanofibers without templates. It is speculated that the protonation and re-orientation of polypyrrole at the oil-water interface may decoil the polymer chains and transform them into more extended conformations, while the charged polymer chains are easier to diffuse into the water phase and form a stable dispersion. Different from electrospinning, the reactive templates may drive the formation of polypyrrole nanofibers through either redox or protonation mechanisms. Nanofibers with different curvatures, compositions, and architectures can be obtained by using different types of reactive template in a simple, fast, environmental-friendly and one-step manner. A wide-range of applications have been demonstrated by the polypyrrole nanofiber-based nanoarchitectonics, including cell culture, tissue engineering, neural stimulation, energy storage, and organic electronics.

Abstract:Nanostructured polypyrrole have been fabricated in high yield by chemical oxidation polymerization using one-dimensional rod-like aggregates of 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-sulfonatophenyl)porphyrin (TPPS4) as a template. This aggregate has the advantages of both soft and hard template such as stable, good versatility (for hard template), cheap, and easy removal (for soft template). Also, the molar ratio of TPPS4 and pyrrole monomer could be as low as 1:1000, showing a high efficiency of the template. Polypyrrole nanorods with variational size have been achieved successfully by using this versatile template and cooperating with the oxidants with different redox potentials. Moreover, in the presence of TPPS4 template and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), Polypyrrole (PPy) nanofibers were obtained even though using a weak oxidant. The formation of PPy nanorods/nanofibers was discussed and their properties including conductivity and thermalstability were evaluated.

Abstract:Electrochemical alternating current (ac) method designed for the synthesis of polypyrrole (PPy) nano-tubule arrays is the topic of this paper. Two-step anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) membrane is used as a template. The morphology of PPy nano-tubules is observed by SEM and discussed. FTIR spectra exhibit that the peaks of PPy nano-tubules shift compared to conventional PPy film.

Abstract:Polypyrrole (PPy) with variable nanostructure such as nanotubes, nanorods and networks has been fabricated by employing an ion association of heparin–methylene blue as new morphology-directing agent. The ion association exhibited both advantages of hard and soft template in template-induced chemical polymerization of pyrrole. By altering the ration of ion association component, PPy could be easily switched in morphology between nanotubes and nanorods. With the coordination effect of ion association and oxidant Fe3+, PPy networks with high conductivity could also be obtained in static condition. The achieved nanostructured polypyrrole were all doped with heparin, a biochemical material, and had potential exploitation value in electrochemistry and biochemistry.

Abstract:Polypyrrole (PPy) nanowire networks have been synthesized in high yield (higher than 90%) by chemical oxidative polymerization of pyrrole in the presence of hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (HTAB) and organic diacids (oxalic acid, tartaric acid, or glutaric acid) and triacid (citric acid). The diameter of nanowire is 60-90 nm. The influence of reaction conditions, such as polymerization temperature, polymerization time, and the molar ratios of HTAB to organic acids and pyrrole, on the morphologies of the PPy nanowire networks has been systematically investigated. In addition, the interconnected PPy nanoparticles are prepared without using HTAB. The film of PPy nanowire networks and nanoparticles is superhydrophilic. A plausible formation mechanism of PPy nanowire networks is discussed.

Abstract:Polypyrrole nanotubes with high electric conductivity and azo function have been fabricated in high yield via an in-situ polymerization.During the process fibrillar complex of FeCl_3 and methyl orange(MO),acting as a reactive self-degraded template,directed the growth of polypyrrole on its surface and promoted the assembly into hollow nanotubular structures.Cationic surfactant,cetyltrimethylammonium bromide(CTAB),was introduced into the system to control the size and morphology of PPy nanotubular/wire structures.The effect of the concentration of CTAB and different surfactant species on the initial template and subsequent polymerization process of pyrrole was investigated systematically.Polyaniline nanotubes were also synthesized via MO-FeCl_3 fibrillar complex,which acted as conventional"hard templates"in this case and can be removed easily by simple washing.

Abstract:One-dimensional conducting polymer nanostructure arrays could provide short ion transport paths, thus delivering superior chemical/physical performance and having large potential as intelligent switching materials. In this work, in situ electrochemical atomic force microscopy is employed to monitor the self-assembly of conducting polypyrrole nanotube arrays in template-free electrochemical polymerization. The specific spreading behavior of pyrrole micelles on the conductive substrate is important to large-area self-assembly of conducting polypyrrole nanotube arrays and the insight into self-assembly of conducting polypyrrole nanotube arrays is discussed. Moreover, compared with unoriented nanostructured polypyrrole, the conducting polypyrrole nanotube arrays possess enhanced electrical and electrochemical performances.

Abstract:Polypyrrole nanowires have been electrosynthesized by direct oxidation of 0.1 mol l(-1) pyrrole in a medium of 75% isopropyl alcohol + 20% boron trifluoride diethyl etherate + 5% poly (ethylene glycol) (by volume) using porous alumina membranes as the templates. The as-prepared nanowires had a smooth surface and uniform diameter and were arranged in an orderly manner in a high density. The conductivity of a single nanowire was measured by the four-electrode technique to be 23.4 S cm(-1) at room temperature. The field emission devices based on the nanowire array were fabricated and their operations were explored. The experimental results indicated that the field emission characteristics of the devices fitted well to the Fowler-Nordheim model of emission. The turn-on electric field was only 1.2 V mu m(-1) and the current density reached 200 mu A cm(-2) at 2.6 V mu m(-1).

Abstract:We report herein the template-directed synthesis, characterization, and electric properties of single-walled carbon nanotube- (SWNT-) based coaxial nanowires, that is, core (SWNT)-shell (conducting polypyrrole and polyaniline) nanowires. The SWNTs were first dispersed in aqueous solutions containing cationic surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) or nonionic surfactant poly(ethylene glycol) mono-p-nonyl phenyl ether (O pi-10). Each individual nanotube (or small bundle) was then encased in its own micellelike envelope with hydrophobic surfactant groups orientated toward the nanotube and hydrophilic groups orientated toward the solution. And thus a hydrophobic region within the micelle/SWNT (called a micelle/SWNT hybrid template) was formed. Insertion and growth of pyrrole or aniline monomers in this hybrid template, upon removal of the surfactant, produce coaxial structures with a SWNT center and conducting polypyrrole or polyaniline coating. Raman and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and scanning (SEM) and transmission (TEM) electron microscopy were used to characterize the composition and the structures of these coaxial nanowires. The results revealed that the micellar molecules used could affect the surface morphologies of the resulting coaxial nanowires but not the molecular structures of the corresponding conducting polymers. Electric properties testing indicated that the SWNTs played the key roles in the conducting polymer/SWNT composites during electron transfer in the temperature range 77 K to room temperature. Compared with the SWNT network embedded in the conducting polymers, the composites within which SWNTs were coated perfectly by the identical conducting polymers exhibited higher barrier heights during electron transfer.

Abstract:Polypyrrole (PPy)/PB and PPy/Ag composite microtubes were synthesized in one pot by using methyl orange ( MO) as a reactive self-degraded template. In contrast to reported conventional template approaches, the MO template did not need to be removed after polymerization. The formation mechanism, structural characteristics, conductivity, and electrochemical properties of the obtained PPy/PB and PPy/Ag microtubes are reported.

Abstract:The electrical properties of a single conducting polypyrrole nanowire, template-synthesized by electrochemical polymerization of pyrrole, were directly measured by the four-terminal technique. Two pairs of microelectrodes were deposited by the focused ion beam system. It is found that the resistivity of the measured nanowire lies in the insulating regime and it follows the one-dimensional Mott variable range hopping model in the temperature range of 77–300K. The conductivity of several segments of another single polypyrrole nanowire was also measured by a multiterminal configuration at room temperature, and it is found that the conductivity is not uniform even on the same nanowire.

Abstract:Multishell nanotubes of polyaniline and carbon were synthesized via a template approach. A thin layer of MnO2 coated on carbon nanotubes acts as a reactive template for the consequent formation of the polyaniline coating. The polyaniline-carbon nanotubes show enhanced dispersibility in water and can be possibly used as a functional material of electrochemical capacitors with improved performance. The general method operates by coating carbon nanotubes on functional materials such as poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene), polypyrrole, silica, and carbon.

Abstract:Polypyrrole (PPy) micro- and nanowires were synthesized through electrochemical polymerization of pyrrole in the aqueous solutions of 1-pyrenesulfonic acid (PSA), in which PSA acted as both surfactant and dopant. Macroscopic studies (SEM and TEM) indicated that the PPy wires have diameters of 120–500nm and length of several micrometers. Electrochemical investigation demonstrated that the PPy wires have much stronger electrochemical activity than the conventional flat PPy film because of their higher specific surface area. Furthermore, the PSA doped PPy wires showed strong emission in an aqueous dispersion. A possible micelle guided formation mechanism has been proposed and investigated.

Abstract:We present here the synthesis and structural characterization of hybrid Au-polypyrrole-Au and Pt- polypyrrole-Au nanowires together with a study of their electrical properties from room-temperature down to very low temperature. A careful characterization of the metal-polymer interfaces by trans- mission electron microscopy revealed that the structure and mechanical strength of bottom and upper interfaces are very different. Variable temperature electrical transport measurements were performed on both multiple nanowires - contained within the polycarbonate template - and single nanowires. Our data show that the three-dimensional Mott variable-range-hopping model provides a complete framework for the understanding of transport in PPy nanowires, including non-linear current-voltage characteristics and magnetotransport at low temperatures.

Abstract:We demonstrate here a feasible approach to the preparation of multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWNT)/polypyrrole (PPy) core-shell nanowires by in situ inverse microemulsion. Transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy showed that the carbon nanotubes were uniformly coated with a PPy layer with a thickness of several to several tens of nanometers, depending on the MWNT content. Fourier transform infrared spectra suggested that there was strong interaction between the pi-bonded surface of the carbon nanotubes and the conjugated structure of the PPy shell layer. The thermal stability and electrical conductivity of the MWNT/PPy composites were examined with thermogravimetric analysis and a conventional four-probe method. In comparison with pure PPy, the decomposition temperature of the MWNT/PPy (1 wt % MWNT) composites increased from 305 to 335 degrees C, and the electrical conductivity of the MWNT/PPy (1 wt % MWNT) composites increased by 1 order of magnitude. The current-voltage curves of the MWNT/PPy nanocomposites followed Ohm's law, reflecting the metallic character of the MWNT/ PPy nanocomposites. The cyclic voltammetry measurements revealed that PPy/ MWNT composites showed an enhancement in the specific charge capacity with respect to that of pure PPy. (c) 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract:With arousing research interest in the fields of advanced materials, energy conservation and environment protection, polypyrrole (PPy), as a widely studied conducting polymer, has exuded new vitality for a lot of applications. The synthetic conditions and morphology control of PPy simultaneously affect its conductivity and processability and eventually determine the application behaviour. This review goes through the preparation of PPy nanostructures, which have been popular in the last two decades, and PPy-based soft materials, which have been of great concern in recent years. The key points for controlling the PPy morphology, increasing conductivity, and improving processability were discussed. Aiming at applications for flexible electronics, energy storage, solar energy utilization and contamination separation, a brief but compressive summary of the construction of PPy-based soft materials and their performance was presented. With this content, this review will provide a systematic development of PPy in an easily handled state and therefore expand its use in newly emerging application fields.

Abstract:Wire-, ribbon-, and sphere-like nanostructures of polypyrrole have been synthesized by solution chemistry methods in the presence of various surfactants (anionic, cationic, or nonionic surfactant) with various oxidizing agents [ammonium persulfate (APS) or ferric chloride (FeCl3), respectively]. The surfactants and oxidizing agents used in this study have played a key role in tailoring the nanostructures of polypyrrole during the polymerization. It is inferred that the lamellar structures of a mesophase are formed by self-assembly between the cations of a long chain cationic surfactant [cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) or dodeyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB)] and anions of oxidizing agent APS. These layered mesostructures are presumed to act as templates for the formation of wire- and ribbon-like polypyrrole nanostructures. In contrast, if a short chain cationic surfactant octyltrimethylammonium bromide (OTAB) or nonionic surfactant poly(ethylene glycol) mono-p-nonylphenyl ether (O pi-10) is used, sphere-like polypyrrole nanostructures are obtained, whichever of the oxidizing agents mentioned above is used. In this case, micelles resulting, from self-assembly among surfactant molecules are envisaged to serve as the templates while the polymerization happens. It is also noted that, if anionic surfactant sodium dodeyl surfate (SDS) is used, no characteristic nanostructures of polypyrrole were observed. This may be attributed to the doping effect of anionic surfactants into the resulting polypyrrole chains, and as a result, micelles self-assembled among surfactant molecules are broken down during the polymerization. The effects of monomer concentration, surfactant concentration, and surfactant chain length on the morphologies of the resulting polypyrrole have been investigated in detail. The molecular structures, composition, and electrical properties of the nanostructured polypyrrole have also been investigated in this study.
