Abstract:Acetals are very important intermediates in synthetic chemistry. This review presents the recent development in the synthesis of acetals using aldehydes and alkenes as raw materials. Abstract:Green chemistry is developing to invent new reactions that are cheaper, cleaner and use less energy. Acetalization is a common strategy for the protection of aldehydes in synthetic chemistry, yet actual protocols of acetals synthesis are limited by difficult workups, the use of high-loading catalyst, harsh reaction conditions, and catalyst tedious preparation. Alternatively, photocatalysis allows to access functional products with minimum synthetic procedures and waste generation. Here we use sodium 4-[6-(diethylamino)-3-(diethyliminio)-3H-xanthen-9-yl]benzene-1,3-disulfonate (acid red 52) as photocatalyst under yellow light irradiation. We obtained a wide array of acyclic and cyclic acetals in 75–93% yields. Results show the efficient acetalization of aldehydes with alcohols at room temperature, the use of abundant and sustainable alcohols as both the solvents and coupling agents, low catalyst loading, short reaction time, and readily available catalyst, which might be applied to green-catalyzed systems.

Abstract:The novel carbon-based acid catalyst has been applied to catalyzing the acetalization and ketalization. The results showed that the catalyst was very efficient with the average yield over 93%. The novel heterogeneous catalyst has the advantages of high activity, wide applicability even to 7-membered ring acetals, strikingly simple workup procedure, non-pollution, and reusability, which will contribute to the green process greatly.

Abstract:The synthesis of 2, 4-diisopropyl-5,5-dimethyl-1,3-dioxane through the acetalization of isobutyraldehyde with 2, 2, 4-trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol (TMPD) catalyzed by the novel carbon based acid was first carried out. High conversion (≥98%) and specific selectivity were obtained using the novel carbon based acid, which kept high activity after it was reused 5 times. Moreover, the catalyst could be used to catalyze the acetalization and ketalization of different aldehydes and ketones with superior yield. The yield of several products was over 90%. The novel heterogeneous catalyst has the distinct advantages of high activity, strikingly simple workup procedure, non-pollution, and reusability, which will contribute to the success of the green process greatly.

Abstract:With the gradual depletion of petroleum resources, the one-step synthesis of acrylic acid/ methyl acrylate from acetic acid/methyl acetate and formaldehyde via aldol reaction, instead of propylene selective oxidation, has stimulated researchers' interest. Current research in this field focus on catalyst modification, structure–activity relationships, catalytic mechanism and kinetics, and separation process design. The faced challenging problems are efficient catalyst development, mechanism-based kinetics calculation for reactor design and separation process optimization, which hinder the industrial progress, although great efforts have been made in the last decades. Therefore, it is necessary and meaningful to review the achievements as the basis for the further exploration and application in this area. This review aims to systematically summarize and analyze the catalytic performance and structure–activity relationships of developed catalysts, catalytic mechanism and kinetics, and separation process design, as well as suggest the prospective research.

Abstract:Given the fact that aldehydes are among the most fundamental and versatile building blocks in organic synthesis, the development of highly efficient and selective methods for their preparation, especially for those delicately functionalized ones remains significant challenging. To address such an issue, Xu and co-workers have recently reported an elegant electrochemical approach realizing the highly regioselective oxidation of functionalized methyl aromatic hydrocarbons towards the desired aromatic acetals without the use of any chemical oxidants or transition metal catalysts. These acetals can be then conveniently converted into corresponding structurally diverse aldehydes via hydrolysis. In addition, the synthetic practicability of current method was further highlighted as the key step in the preparation of the antihypertensive drug telmisartan. Abstract:Acyl moiety is a common structural unit in organic molecules, thus acylation methods have been widely explored to construct various functional compounds. While the traditional Friedel-Crafts acylation processes work to allow viable construction of arylketones under harsh acid conditions, recent progress on developing acylation methods focused on the new reactivity discovery by exploiting versatile and easily accessible acylating reagents. Of them, alcohols are cheap, have low toxicity, and are naturally abundant feedstocks; thus, they were recently used as ideal acyl precursors in molecule synthesis for ketones, esters, amides, etc. In this review, we display and discuss recent advances in employing alcohols as unusual acyl sources to form C-C and C-heteroatom bonds, with emphasis on the substrate scope, limitations, and mechanism.

Abstract:A novel carbon-based strong acid catalyst, methylnaphthalenesulfonic acid - formaldehyde condensate, has been synthesized successfully. The catalytic activity for acetalization and ketalization at room temperature under solvent-free condition was investigated. The results showed that the novel catalyst was very efficient for the reaction. Also the novel heterogeneous catalyst owned the advantages of high activity, wide applicability, strikingly simple work-up procedure, non-pollution, stability and reusability, which made the catalyst hold great potential for the "green process".

Abstract:To cope with the severe plastic waste crisis, massive efforts are made to develop sustainable polymer materials whose degradation involves a disposing and decomposing to small molecule (DDM) and/or a chemical recycling to monomer (CRM) process. Polyacetals, a type of pH-responsive polymers, are degradable under acidic conditions, while highly stable under neutral and basic circumstances. As for their synthesis, the cationic ring-opening polymerization (CROP) of cyclic acetals is an elegant and promising approach, though suffering from fatal side reactions and polymerization-depolymerization equilibrium. Recent development in CRM restimulates the interest in the long-forgotten CROP method due to its inherent depolymerization characteristics. In terms of the end-of-life options, polyacetals are recyclable materials with both DDM and CRM potentials. They not only expand the scope of materials for closed-loop recycling but also help to tune the degradation properties of traditional polyesters and polyolefins. This review aims to discuss the synthesis of various polyacetals by CROP and their degradation properties from the perspectives of 1) polymerization of cyclic acetals, dioxepins, and hemiacetal esters, 2) copolymerization of cyclic acetals with heterocyclic or vinyl monomers, and 3) degradation and recycling properties of the related polymers.

Chemoselective Synthesis of 1,1-Diacetate from Aldehydes Catalyzed by Sulfonated Carbon Nanocage

Abstract:Acetals are one of the most useful carbonyl protecting groups because of their stability under both neutral and basic media.In addition,acetals can be converted to a variety of other functional groups.Thus,to find a green synthesis method of acetals,the sulfonated carbon nanocage(S-CKT) as a reusable solid acid catalyst was applied to the reaction of aldehydes with acetic anhydride.As a result,a mild and efficient method was developed for the chemoselective preparation of 1,1-diacetates(acylals) from the mixture of aldehydes(2 mmol) and acetic anhydride(5 mmol) catalyzed by S-CKT(30 mg) under room temperature and solvent-free conditions.The reaction takes a shorter time(5—12 min) and gives good to excellent yield(89% — 98%).While it is found that ketone doesn't react with acetic anhydride to yield corresponding product under the same conditions.The catalyst was recycled seven times without a distinct loss of activity by simple filtration and washing.

Abstract:Acetylenic polymers are a group of specialty materials with novel properties. In this paper, recent progress in the development of functional acetylenic polymers is summarized. These polymers are synthesized through different polymerization approaches such as Sonogashira polycoupling, decarbonylative chloroarylation polyaddition, and polycyclotrimerization. Efforts in the development of new monomers and catalyst exploration as well as reaction optimization have lead to a large quantity of linear and hyperbranched polymers with high molecular weights and good processability. The polymer functionalization is realized by incorporating functional units into the monomer structures, which endow the resulting polymers with fascinating properties such as aggregation-induced emission, optical nonlinearity, light refractivity, photosensitivity, photopatternability, redoxactivity, and magnetism.

Abstract:Thioacetals of various aldehydes were obtained directly from aldehydes or by a transthioacetalisation process from O,O-acetals catalyzed by Povidone-iodine (PVP-I) with good to excellent yields. Attractive features of this method include mild reaction conditions, low catalyst loading, recyclability of catalyst, facile purification of products, and high synthetic efficiency.

Abstract:Keto-aldehyde resin is an important multifunctional additive for coatings,which is soluble in almost all paint solvents and compatible with practically all coatings raw materials.In this paper,the domestic and overseas progress in synthesis and modification of ketone-aldehyde resin was reviewed,with emphasis on introducing two modification methods of ketone-aldehyde resin,namely in situ modification and graft and condensation with methylol of ketone-aldehyde.Functionalization of ketone-aldehyde resin should be further development directions.Finally,some suggestion was proposed for development of ketone-aldehyde resin in China.

Abstract:Aryl alkynoate is an important intermediate and powerful synthetic tool in organic chemistry, because it contains acetylene bond which can be easily introduced of different functional groups. During the past decades, several types of reactions and coupling partners have been developed for the functionalization of aryl alkynoates. In this review, we summarize the recent advances on the reactions of aryl alkynoates, including direct cyclization, ester group migration/cyclization, aryl migration/decarboxylation, ipsocyclization/clearomatization, and other reactions in the past decade. Abstract:Acylsilanes are of wide interest and have been investigated as an important class of organic reaction intermediates with superior chemical and physical properties. Various synthetic methods for the preparation of acylsilanes with mild reaction conditions resulting in excellent yields and high stereoselectivity have been developed. These strategies mainly include step‐wise reaction design, oxidative systems, isomerization/rearrangement, silylation of carboxylic acid derivatives and carbonylation. This minireview summarizes recent advances in the synthesis of acylsilanes over the past decade.
