Additionally, side reactions were comprehensively investigated and a mechanism was proposed.

Abstract:Due to their excellent biocompatibility and biodegradability, aliphatic polyesters are widely used in the biomedical, packaging and agricultural fields, which are usually accessed by the ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of lactones and the catalysts particularly play an important role. Herein a series of quinolinyl-urea catalysts have been synthesized via the reaction between isocyanate and aminoquinoline with an amino group at different substitution positions and characterized. In combination with 7-methyl-1, 5, 7-triazabicyclo[4,4,0]dec-5-ene (MTBD) as a cocatalyst and benzyl alcohol (BnOH) as an initiator, 1-(3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)-3-(quinolin-3-yl)urea (3-QU) was observed to be most active for the ROP of δ-valerolactone (δ-VL). The polymerization conditions were optimized by varying the type of organic base, catalyst concentration and reaction temperature. By changing the ratio of [M]0/[I], linear polyvalerolactones (PVLs) with different molecular weights and narrow molecular weight distribution were prepared. The kinetic and chain extension experiments were carried out to prove the “living”/controllable feature. And the NMR experiments were used to support the proposal of possible mechanism.

Abstract:Bulk ring-opening copolymerization of γ-valerolactone (γ-VL) and e-caprolactone (e-CL) was carried out with boron trifluoride etherate complex (BF_3·OEt_2) as catalyst. The structures of the resultant copolymers were determined by 1H-NMR and 13C-NMR spectroscopies. The molecular weight, composition and melting point of the copolymers were characterized by means of GPC, 1H-NMR and DSC, respectively. Although being unable to ring-opening homopolymerize, γ-VL was ring-opening copolymerized with e-CL to give copolymers P(γ-VL-co-e-CL) containing certain amount of γ-VL unit. The introduction of γ-VL unit resulted in significant decrease of the molecular weight and melting point of the copolymers. The reactivity ratio of e-CL and γ-VL was estimated as 17.6 and 0.0078, respectively, by the K-T method.

Abstract:In combination with 7-methyl-1,5,7-triazabicyclo[4.4.0]clec-5-ene (MTBD), the benzoxazolyl urea (NO) catalyst was very efficient for the solution ring-opening polymerization of L-lactide (L-LA) in the presence of benzyl alcohol. On the basis of homopolymerization, the solution ring-opening copolymerization of L-LA and delta-valerolactone (delta-VL) was investigated and the PLLA-co-PVL random and PLLA-b-PVL block copolymers were prepared via varying the feeding strategy (premixing or sequential feeding) and the feeding ratio of two monomers. The sequence structure of copolymers was analyzed by H-1- and C-13-NMR spectra and the copolymer compositions in the copolymers were in consistence with the feeding ratio of two monomers. The randomness R of the random copolymers prepared via premixing two monomers was about 0.5, which was between completely random and block copolymers. The thermal properties were tested by the differential calorimetry scanning (DSC). When the contents of two monomers in the copolymers were relatively close, no melting peak could be observed in the DSC curves and the samples was rubbery at room temperature as an amorphous polymer. As the content of VL segments decreased, the glass transition temperature of random copolymers increased. In addition, the block copolymers (PLLA-b-PVL) were synthesized through the "one-pot method" and "chain extension method". The sequence of segments was controllable and the randomness R approached zero. [GRAPHICS] .
Synthesis of Cyclic and Linear Block Copolyesters via Ring-opening Copolymerization of epsilon-Caprolatone and L-Lactide Catalyzed by Zinc Complex

Abstract:In combination with methyllithium, ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of L-lactide (L-LA) and copolymerization of epsilon-caprolactone (epsilon-CL) and L-LA were investigated in the presence or absence of benzyl alcohol by using an air-stable zinc complex bearing (benzimidazolyl) pyridine alcohol ligand. Similar to the polymerization of epsilon-CL, the monomers were completely converted to polymers in short time in all the cases and high catalytic activities were achieved in the ROP of L-LA. The structural analysis of polymers indicated that in the absence of benzyl alcohol, the polymers obtained were mainly cyclic PLA with relatively broad molecular weight distribution, whereas linear PLA with lower molecular weight and narrower molecular weight distribution predominated in the presence of benzyl alcohol. On the basis of ROP of epsilon-CL and L-LA, the ring-opening copolymerization of epsilon-CL and L-LA was studied with the different CL/LA feeding ratios. A series of linear and cyclic block copolymers with different CL/LA molar ratios was synthesized by the sequential feeding strategy according to the presence or absence of benzyl alcohol in the reaction system. The structure and thermal properties of homopolymers and copolymers were characterized by FTIR, H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR, GPC, DSC and TGA analysis.

Abstract:In combination with methyllithium, a 2,6-bis(amino)phenol zinc complex 1 was used in the ring-opening polymerization of δ -valerolactone in the absence or presence of benzyl alcohol and showed high efficiency, mainly producing cyclic and linear polyvalerolactones, respectively. On the basis of homopolymerization, the ring-opening copolymerization of ε -caprolactone and δ -valerolactone was investigated. The P(CL- co -VL) random copolymers, PCL- b -PVL and PVL- b -PCL diblock copolymers, were prepared by varying the feeding strategy (premixing or sequential feeding). The copolymer composition was adjusted by varying the feeding ratio of two monomers. The structure and thermal properties of obtained polymers were characterized by GPC, 1 H-NMR, 13 C-NMR, MALDI-TOF mass spectroscopy, and DSC, respectively.

Abstract:Bioderived poly(gamma-butyrolactone) (PBL) is a biodegradable and biocompatible material with properties superior to other aliphatic polyesters. Ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of gamma-butyrolactone (BL) remains a great challenge due to the non-strained structure and unfavorable thermodynamics. In the present work, we design a novel zwitterionic ROP system for a well-controlled cationic copolymerization of BL with 3,3-bis(chloromethyl) oxacyclobutane (CO) catalyzed by scandium triflates (Sc(OTf)(3)). The molar fraction of BL repeating units in the random copolymer keeps 50% which is independent of the monomer conversions or polymerization time when the feed ratio of [BL]/[CO] is higher than 2. High molecular weight (MW) linear and cyclic copolymers of poly(BL-co-CO) are synthesized by inter- and intra-molecular coupling reactions, respectively, after quantitative consumption of CO. Cyclic copolymers possess higher decomposition and glass transition temperatures than the linear ones with comparable MWs due to the absence of terminal groups. Chloromethyl groups of CO repeating units provide PBL with reactive sites for further functionalization. A post-polymerization quaternization of N-methylimidazole produces amphiphilic copolymers able to self-assemble into nano-aggregates in aqueous solution.

Periodic Vinyl Copolymers Containing Γ-Butyrolactone Via ADMET Polymerization of Designed Diene Monomers with Built-in Sequence

Abstract:The synthesis of a new family of periodic copolymers containing gamma-butyrolactones by acyclic diene metathesis polymerization (ADMET) and their thermal properties are presented. Two symmetric diene monomers, M6 and M8, were designed. Both monomers contain two gamma-butyrolactone units, but they are different in the length of methylene spacers between cyclic structures and terminal alkenes. The monomers have been prepared by a two-step approach; first, the atom transfer radical addition (ATRA) of diethyl meso-2,5-diiodohexanedioate with either 1,5-hexadiene or 1,7-octadiene was conducted to yield intermediates containing two gamma-iodo ester sequences; subsequently, the specific sequence was transformed into gamma-butyrolactone unit via intramolecular cyclization upon heating. The two monomers were polymerized using two Grubbs catalysts (Grubbs I and Grubbs II) to produce four polymers with moderate to high molecular weights (P6-1, P6-2, P8-1, and P8-2) and hydrogenation of which gave the final saturated polymers. The expected periodic copolymers have been obtained and were characterized with a variety of methods, indicating that the gamma-butyrolactone units could endure the polymerization and hydrogenation. Polymers catalyzed by Grubbs II catalyst suffer from chain heterogeneity due to severe olefin isomerization. Thermal properties of the polymers were investigated via thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). TGA measurements show that these polymers are stable up to 350 degrees C. DSC results demonstrate that the glass transition and melting behaviors of the polymers are not only affected by the rigidity of gamma-butyrolactone units in polyethylene chains but also dependent on the methylene spacer length and chain homogeneity. Copolymerization of M6 or M8 with 1,9-decadiene resulted in random copolymers with lower gamma-butyrolactone content and less regular chain structure. These copolymers exhibit lower T-g or T-m compared with the periodic copolymers.

Abstract:Rare earth (RE) catalysts exhibit extremely high catalytic activity in ring-opening polymerization. This work reviews the application of rare earth catalysts in ring-opening polymerizations of lactones, lactides, cyclic ethers, cyclic carbonates and cyclic carboxyanhydrides in the past decade. Compared to other transition metals and main group elements, RE elements have larger cationic radii which allow for higher coordination numbers and more coordination modes, endowing RE catalysts with high catalytic activity. These characteristics not only fuel the widespread use of new RE catalysts in pursuing high molecular weight and polymerization rate of intensively studied monomers, such as epsilon-caprolactone (CL), lactide (LA) and beta-butyllactone (BBL), but also unleash the polymerization of traditionally non-polymerizable gamma-butyrolactone (gamma-BL) and its derivatives. The inherent low strain energy of the five-membered ring imparts monomer recyclability into the corresponding polymer. Furthermore, stereoselective polymerization of racemic monomers can be realized by RE catalysts containing chiral ligands with large steric hindrance. Slight modification of ligands gives rise to tailored or even inverted stereoregularity of polymers. The unique advantages of RE catalysts in the controllability of polymerization process and polymer structure are illustrated by discussing the relationship between catalyst structures and polymerization results. In addition, a novel ring-opening polymerization catalyzed by RE compounds, named Janus polymerization is introduced. This new mechanism combines cationic and anionic polymerizations at two ends of a single propagating chain and thus provides a facile methodology to synthesize polymers with sophisticated chemical structures and topologies in one step. New catalysts and mechanisms of ring-opening polymerizations have attractive potentiality in begetting new materials.

Abstract:γ-butyrolactone (γ-BL), serving as the monomer of biocompatible and recyclable poly(γ-butyrolactone) plastic, faces a giant challenge in ring-opening polymerization (ROP) due to its low strain energy. The ROP of γ-BL is generally achieved under harsh conditions (e.g., high-pressure or gas-protected atmosphere) and is mostly based on homogeneous systems. Here, we synthesize a series of lanthanum metal-organic framework-based porous nanospheres and successfully apply them as heterogeneous catalysts in efficient ROP of γ-BL under mild conditions. Specifically, NNU-mIM-3 presents a yield of 24.6% with low polydispersity distribution centered at 3.6 kDa and the obtained PγBL can be completely and quantitatively recycled into monomers by simple heat treatment. Besides, the ROP catalysis systems have been intensively explored with various imine-based additives, proven to exhibit largely improved performance with PγBL yield of ~50% and Mw of ~8 kDa. This work paves a new way to explore novel heterogeneous catalysts in producing biocompatible and degradable plastics.

Abstract:Among the polymer families, aliphatic polyesters stand out from this category thanks to their degradable and biocompatible properties. In particular, the γ‐lactones differ from other lactones by yielding polyesters that can be depolymerized back to the monomer and offer the advantage of counting various biobased monomers. As an example, α‐hydroxy‐γ‐butyrolactone (HBL) is a hydroxy‐functionalized monomer that can be obtained by a biological synthetic route from glucose. In this article, the ring‐opening copolymerization (ROCP) of HBL and l‐lactide (LLA) using t‐BuP4 as catalyst is investigated. The copolymerizations were conducted within a temperature range of 5–100°C, affording monomer conversions exceeding 80%. The characterization of the copolyesters revealed a branched structure consisting of different HBL patterns, including cyclic, linear, and branched motives. Performing a kinetic study of the copolymerization at room temperature provided a deeper understanding of the mechanism. By modulating the reaction parameters, copolymers of low molar masses with an HBL content of up to 33% were synthesized. High molar mass LLA/HBL‐based copolyesters, with Mw ̄ up to 290,000 g/mol, were synthesized by a straightforward chain coupling reaction with a diisocyanate.

Alkylation of 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene with γ-butyrolactone over heteropolyacid catalysts

Abstract:A Friedel–Crafts-type reaction of 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene with γ-butyrolactone was conducted over various solid acid catalysts such as zeolites, polymer resins, and heteropolyacids. The alkylation to 4-(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl) butyric acid proceeded exclusively with these catalysts; no acylation to the ketone occurred. The heteropolyacids, such as H3PW12O40 and H4SiW12O40, were superior in activity to the other catalysts; they also accelerated the reaction of the product acid with γ-butyrolactone to the corresponding carboxylic acid. When the heteropolyacids were supported on silica, alkylation proceeded efficiently with high mass balance, suppressing further reaction. The reusability of the supported heteropolyacids also was confirmed.
Living ring-opening polymerization of lactides catalyzed by guanidinium acetate

Abstract:Hexabutyl guanidinium acetate (HBG . OAc) was synthesized and successfully used as a catalyst for the ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of lactides. The experimental results indicated that the guanidinium salt HBG . OAc showed satisfactory catalytic behavior. Polymerization in bulk (120 degreesC, 18 h) produced polylactides with moderate molecular weights (number-average molecular weight = 2.0 X 10(4)) and very narrow molecular weight distributions (polydispersity index = 1.07-1.12). A kinetic study of polymerization in bulk with HBG . OAc as an initiator revealed that the polymerization possessed typical characteristics of living polymerization. A ROP mechanism by HBG . OAc was proposed on the basis of the additive effect of the polymerization and the H-1 NMR characterization of the microstructure of the product polymers. (C) 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract:Two new polymerization processes,ie the di spersion polymeri zation using n-butane as reaction medium and th e suspending emu lsion polymerization,were introduced,and the particle characteristics of obtaine d PVC resin were described briefly.The results showed that (1)for the heterogene ous dispersion polymerization using n-butane as polymerization mediu m,the sizes a nd morphology of PVC resin particles obtained were related to the ratio of VC to n-butane and conversion,and because of the chain transfer to n-butane,the molecu lar mass of PVC resin obtained was smaller than that of suspension PVC resin pro d uced at the same polymerization temperature;(2)for the suspending emulsion polym erization,the size distribution and morphology of PVC resin particles obtained w ere related to the conversion,ratio of water to oil,and the varieties of additiv es.
