Abstract:In this review, we survey the progress of triboluminescent compounds, which exhibit attractive emissions upon mechanical stimuli without the need for other stimulation or irritation. In particular, we present the research history, observed phenomena, proposed possible mechanisms, different types of triboluminescent compounds, and potential applications in an attempt to find the inherent clues hidden in the scattered literature. Accordingly, we provide some outlooks at the end of the paper for further exploration in this field.

Abstract:Triboluminescence, also as known as mechanoluminescence, is an attractive optical behavior that means the light emitted from specific organic and inorganic materials when they are subjected to external forces, such as crushing, deformation, cleaving, vibration. Inorganic triboluminescent materials show great potential for applications in sensing, such as stress sensing, damage detection. However, the triboluminescent mechanism of organic materials should be pushed further as well as their application. In this review, we summarized the history of development and possible mechanism of organic triboluminescent materials, and discussed various applications in sensing field. At the same time, inspired by the existing research progress in inorganic triboluminescent materials, we proposed the flourishing development prospects of organic triboluminescent materials in stress sensors, movement monitoring, imaging stress distribution, visualization of crack propagation, structural diagnosis, and other fields.

Abstract:Material properties in the process of tribo-emission decides the characteristics of both spectra and intensity of triboluminescence. ZnS:Mn semiconductor material was proved to be a high emission triboluminescent material in many investigations; Ce- and Yb-doped hexacelsian possess the excellent shortwave triboluminescence character due to f-d electronic transition of doping element with position valances ions; the fracto-mecha-luminescence and photoluminescence spectra of phthalic acid, 4-hydroxy coumarin monohydrate, etc. present obviously a broad ultraviolet and violet waveband emissions, showing the disadvantage of these organic crystals as shortwave triboluminescence materials. Triboluminescence test apparatus of drop tower type have the tribo-emission of impact friction effect; the pin-on-disk type apparatus can perform the triboluminescent experiments with sliding friction mechanism; the twin ring tribometer is used to measure the triboluminescence of polymer material friction rings. These units supply a suitable conditions for obtaining triboluminescence with shortwave emission and persistent high intensity.

Abstract:CONSPECTUS: Mechanoluminescence is a process of light emission from materials in response to external mechanical actions. As mechanical energy is ubiquitously available in nature, mechanoluminescence can provide sustainable solutions to challenging problems in the fields of biology and optoelectronics as well as energy and environmental sciences. In particular, remote delivery of light through mechanoluminescence can also be achieved by noncontact forces from ultrasonic waves and magnetic fields, which enables noninvasive diagnosis and therapy in biomedical applications. Owing to the well-recognized merits, the research of mechanoluminescence has evolved into a highly interdisciplinary field, which in turn has inspired considerable interest in the development of novel mechanoluminescence materials and devices for boosting the emission performances such as brightness, repeatability, and spectral tunability. Mechanoluminescence was originally observed in processes associated with fracture and plastic deformation of materials, which are characterized by inefficient and nonreproducible light emissions. Therefore, current research is mainly directed to repeatable mechanoluminescence through elastic deformation for the continuous generation of light. Such elastico-mechanoluminescence is primarily observed in host materials with piezoelectricity and doped with activator ions such as manganese and lanthanide. Upon the application of mechanical stress, the piezoelectric hosts establish internal electric fields that trigger electronic transitions between the dopant-associated energy levels, eventually giving rise to light emissions from the dopant ions. On the basis of the learned knowledge, various host/dopant combinations have been synthesized and tested for mechanoluminescence in the past few years. Meanwhile, novel composite structures and devices incorporated with the mechanoluminescence materials have also been designed for an efficient light generation under different forms of mechanical actions, such as compressing, stretching, and rubbing. The significant progress in mechanoluminescence study has generated new opportunities for fundamental research and technological applications. To inspire and guide further investigations in this field, we systematically review emerging mechanoluminescence systems and their frontier applications. We focus on emerging host materials that have been identified to render bright mechanoluminescence with deliberately controlled emission characteristics, along with an analysis of the structure-property relationship in these materials. We also discuss innovative methodologies for translating mechanoluminescence into various cuttingedge device applications by precisely controlling the interaction of mechanoluminescence materials and their surrounding environments. We attempt to provide the rationale behind these developments, and simultaneously highlight future opportunities and challenges for mechanoluminescence.

Abstract:In recent years, mechanoluminescence, as a unique luminescence phenomenon, exhibited huge potential applications and rapid development in stress detection, anti-counterfeiting, encryption, light sources and bio-imaging, etc. Recently, great efforts have been made on molecular aggregation science, molecular packing and intermolecular interaction in the solid state have been deeply understood, directly promoting the development and application of mechanoluminescence and photoluminescence materials. The phenomenon and mechanism of mechanoluminescence were firstly introduced, the relationship between mechanoluminescence and aggregation behaviors of organic compounds were discussed in detail. The measurement and characterization of mechanoluminescence, the relationship between applied stress and mechanoluminescence intensity, and the color of mechanoluminescence were briefly introduced, then, the current application of mechanoluminescence was highlighted. In the end, the prospect of organic mechanoluminescence materials was afforded.

Abstract:Triboluminescence (TL) is the emission of light induced by the application of mechanical energy to a solid. It links the spectroscopic, structural, mechanical, and electrical properties of solids. Here, materials of ZnS doped with various contents of Mn2+ were investigated. It was shown that they all have favorable triboluminescent property. The effects of the content of Mn2+, the sintering temperature and time on the luminescent property of ZnS:Mn were discussed. It was found the ZnS doped with 1.2% Mn2+ exhibited the strongest TL intensity among the materials investigated. The growth conditions were obtained through experiments, and ZnS:Mn with highly efficient triboluminescence was prepared. The mechanism of triboluminescence is proposed as follows: the electrons are excited from ground state to excited state by mechanic energy, then recombines with holes and give lights. The broad range of exciting energy may contribute to the high triboluminescent efficiency.

Abstract:Light has been, and continues to be, one of the most fundamental and indispensable elements to life and society. Generally, it can be produced in the process from a higher energy quantum mechanical state of a particle to a lower one through the emission of a photon, and the excitation can be from a variety of sources, including photoluminescence, electroluminescence, mechanoluminescence, chemiluminescence and so on, which are emitted from luminophores with different compositions. The development of luminescent materials has allowed us to gain enormous knowledge that has undoubtedly promoted high-tech innovations, such as organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), biological probes, chemical sensing, stimuli responses, security painting, and so on. This review makes a detailed introduction of the generation, mechanism and application of light emissions, especially for those in aggregate or solid state. With the classification of emissions with different types of excited states, we attempt to draw the whole map of these light emitting processes, thus summarizing the relationship between the molecular structure/packing and emission property. Also, their applications are highlighted with the exploration of novel materials and technologies.

Abstract:Organic mechanoluminescence (ML) compounds have experienced breakthrough developments in recent years, with ML being discovered in many kinds of organic compounds. Accordingly, the ML composition is becoming more complicated; complications can be observed from the initial stages of nitrogen discharge to fluorescence, dual emission of fluorescence and phosphorescence and the more novel persistent room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) on to photo-sensitive ML, presenting unique luminous properties with more perspectives. Since ML is found to be highly correlated with the molecular configuration and the intermolecular packing style in the aggregate state, the photophysical properties should be analyzed carefully with the consideration of MUSIC (Molecular Uniting Set Identified Characteristic). In this review paper, we summarized the recently reported organic ML compounds, which were classified according to their luminous and chemical structure features. The investigation of organic ML can promote the development of "aggregated state chemistry" and the luminous theory in the aggregate state.
Branched Truxene and Triindole Compounds and Their Solid-State Luminescent Enhancement.

Abstract:C3-symmetric truxene and triindole have been widely used to design the branched optoelectronic molecules. However, most of them exhibit high luminous efficiency in the solution and quenched luminescence in the solid state. Here, we respectively chose alkylated truxene and triindole as the central core, 2-methylphenyl as the peripheral functional groups to synthesize three branched compounds. Their photophysical properties have been explored combining with the theoretical calculation. The three compounds exhibit good solubility and high solid-state fluorescence quantum yields. The absorption and emission peaks of triindole compound exhibit apparent red-shift in comparison with those of truxene compounds, which indicates triindole more highly electron delocalization than truxene. The single-crystal structure shows that alkylation of the central core and branched steric bulkiness of these molecules effectively reduce the intermolecular π⋯π stacking and avoid the non-radiative transition of these molecules from excited state to ground state in the solid state.
Structural Manipulation and Triboluminescence of Tetrahalomanganese(Ⅱ) Complexes

Abstract:Triboluminescence is a fascinating luminescence phenomenon induced by mechanical stimuli. Triboluminescent materials have potential applications in lighting, displays, and sensing, owing to their distinctive modes of light generation. However, organic triboluminescent materials are severely limited, and their luminescence mechanism remains unclear. Herein, we found that the luminescent manganese(II) complex [BPP](2)[MnBr4] displayed interesting triboluminescence performance. A series of green emissive tetrahalomanganese(II) complexes was rationally designed and synthesized. The associated single crystal structures revealed that all complexes consisted of one [MnX4](2-) (X = Br or Cl) ion and two organic cationic ligands per unit cell, with a tetrahedral geometrical symmetry around the Mn(II) ion. In addition, the photophysical properties of tetrahalomanganese(II) complexes were easily tuned by varying the organic ligands or halogen ions, which is beneficial for these organic-inorganic hybrid structures. Under UV light irradiation, all tetrahalomanganese(II) complexes in the solid state exhibited bright green luminescence and a broad featureless emission band at 450-650 nm. The time-resolved photoluminescent decay curves demonstrated that the emission lifetimes of the prepared tetrahalomanganese(II) complexes ranged from 260.5 mu s to 1.95 ms, which was attributed to phosphorescence. The long-lived emission was mainly due to the spin-forbidden nature of the metal center d-d (T-4(1)(G)-> (6)A(1)) radiative transition. Thermogravimetric analysis was performed to examine the thermodynamic stabilities of the tetrahalomanganese(II) complexes. The thermal stabilities of manganese(II) complexes with P-based ligands were higher than those of the complexes containing N-based ligands. Upon applying a force to the crystals, the tetrahalomanganese(II) complexes all exhibited prominent triboluminescence that could be observed by the naked eye in the dark. Systematic analysis of the crystals showed that the TL activities of the manganese(II) complexes were related to the intra- and inter-molecular C-H center dot center dot center dot X (X = Br or Cl) interactions. The intra- and inter-molecular C-H center dot center dot center dot X interactions significantly reduced the possible energy loss caused by molecular vibrations and rotations in the [MnX4](2-) unit under mechanical stress, improving TL emission. Moreover, a comparison of photoluminescence and triboluminescence indicated that different excitation sources yielded two distinct luminescence processes: transition of excitons excited by illumination and recombination of electrons and holes on the surface driven by polarization charges. Overall, the results presented herein new opportunities for fundamental research based on the developed class of triboluminescent materials.
Tribo-Induced Near-Infrared Light Emission Between Metal and Quartz.

Abstract:Triboluminescence (TL) refers to the luminescence phenomenon at the material surface under the action of pressure or shear. This fascinating phenomenon can directly convert mechanical energy into light emission without the need for other auxiliary components; therefore, it attracts more and more researchers to conduct research in different wavelength ranges, such as X-ray, ultraviolet, visible light, and terahertz. However, there have been few reports on the study of the near-infrared (NIR) range, which is very important in the integrity of the triboluminescence research. In this research, we found that NIR light with a wavelength ranging from 800 to 1000 nm was generated by friction between solid metals and a quartz crystal. Analysis of the cross section of the quartz disk after friction revealed that the TL phenomenon had a strong relationship with the doping of metal grains into the silica. Density functional theory (DFT) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were also conducted to further identify the results. We infer that such light emission arises from the implantation of metal grains into the surface of the quartz, which forms a metal-insulator junction with amorphous silica. Moreover, electron transition between the metal and the insulator, followed by a transition at the center of the defects, causes near-infrared light emission. Our research reveals the infrared luminescence behavior from a different perspective, the transfer of materials, and perhaps deepens the understanding of the near-infrared emission mechanism.

Abstract:Triboluminescence (TL) is an optical phenomenon that has a long and varied history with broad applications, such as damage detection, X-ray source, and mass health monitoring sensor. So far, the properties and mechanisms of TL remain not completely understood. The TL properties emitted during the sliding contact between Al2O3 and SiO2 surfaces were studied along different crystallographic orientations. In this study, the TL intensity of Al2O3 was significantly enhanced as Al2O3 surface was along a particular crystallographic orientation, which is an unconventional phenomenon. TL enhancement of Al2O3 was not affected by air atmosphere and atomic stocking mode of Al2O3. The enhancement mechanism of Al2O3 may be influenced by the surface state of Al2O3. This work provides a new method to control the intensity of TL and novel ideas to elucidate the TL mechanism.

Abstract:The triboluminescence(TL) of Sm(TTA)3phen was firstly investigated,and its TL spectrum showed the characteristic transitions of the Sm3+ ion.The relationship between the TL phenomena of the rare earth complexes and the properties of the ligands was also discussed.It is suggested that the ligands with a strong electron donor-acceptor system would benefit the TL of the rare earth complexes,and the ligand molecules should be rigid enough for the growth of the rare earth complex crystals.

Abstract:Mechanoluminescence (ML), the phenomenon of light emission triggered by mechanical force on a solid material, has gained significant attention in recent years. ML functional devices have represented an important research field with potential impact in a wide realm of materials, scientific disciplines, technologies, and engineering applications. Within the realm of ML emission, the spectral characteristics and overall intensity emerge as pivotal factors for practical utilization. In this review, we focus on the development strategies, with an emphasis on their brightness and color properties, while delving into the associated mechanisms governing structure and performance. Subsequently, we navigate through the cutting-edge advancements in ML functional devices, particularly in burgeoning fields such as self-power sensors, information security, engineering structure diagnosis, and biomedical applications. Finally, existing challenges and future perspectives are proposed, aiming to overcoming current obstacles and propel concerted efforts in the field.

Abstract:Triboluminescence (TL) reflects the characteristics of real-time optical signals generated in the process of friction, hence is promising in real-time monitoring and surface study. By studying the sliding between SiO2 and Al2O3, we found that triboluminescence can be modulated quantitatively by modifying ambient humidity. The trend of TL intensity varies at different ranges of humidity and there exists a critical humidity. TL intensity rises initially and reaches its peak at critical humidity before it diminishes and eventually decreases to zero. It results from the decrease of energy barrier of tribo-charging and the increase of electric field intensity below critical humidity, and for humidity above critical humidity, the rapid growth of surface conductivity and a shorter distance account for smaller possibility of gas collision.

As a new class of smart materials, mechanoluminescent materials are widely applicable for fluorescence switches, mechanosensors, security papers, optoelectronic devices and data storage etc. In the past few years, systematic investigations have been carried out, resulting in the production of a variety of mechanoluminescent materials. Abstract:Organic luminescence with different forms continues to be one of the most active research fields in science and technology. Herein, an ultra-simple organic molecule (TPA-B), which exhibits both mechanoluminescence (ML) and photo-induced room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) in the crystalline state, provides an opportunity to reveal the internal mechanism of ML and the dynamic process of photo-induced RTP in the same molecule. Through the detailed investigation of photophysical properties together with crystal structures, the key role of molecular packing and intermolecular interactions was highlighted in the luminescence response by mechanical and light stimulus, affording efficient strategies to design potential smart functional materials with multiple luminescence properties.

Abstract:Triboluminescence (TL) has gained increasing attention in the past two decades due to its potential for many applications such as an in situ damage sensor, X-ray source, spectroscopic probe, and optical switch. So far the mechanisms by which TL is excited are not well understood. We have investigated the TL emitted during the sliding contact between silica wafer and YSZ (yttria-stabilized zirconia) wafers in CO2 gas, ambient air, and vacuum. We discovered that the mean intensity of photons emitted in CO2 gas is nearly a hundred times stronger than that in air. TL induced in the sliding experiment is proposed to be due to a combination of chemical luminescence, impurities and vacancies luminescence. In addition, the intensity of the light emission of YSZ may be controlled by changing the concentration of CO2 gas.
