Abstract:Progress in vapour-phase synthesis of guaiacol(guathol)from catechol,catalysts for the reaction and the reaction mechanism study are reviewed.Catalysts for the reaction,including kaolin,hydrotalcite,oxide,molecular sieve,phosphate are particularly summarized.Phosphate catalysts showed the highest catalytic performance,both catechol conversion and guaiacol(or guathol) selectivity were higher than 90%,and the catalyst kept stable for longer than 2000 h,which exhibited a foreground for industrial application.The mechanism study revealed that the weak acidic-basic characteristics of the catalysts may account for the high selectivity and the excellent durability.

Abstract:In previous papers [Wang, Q.; Li, X.; Wang, L.; Cheng, Y.; Xie, G. Ind. Eng. Chem. Res. 2005, 44 (2), 261-266; 2005, 44 (13), 4518-4522], a lumped kinetic scheme and a fractional kinetic model for the liquid-phase oxidation of p-xylene catalyzed by Co-Mn-Br was proposed and tested and the effect of water on the oxidation reaction kinetics was investigated. In this paper the effect of guanidine catalyst additive on the liquid-phase oxidation of p-xylene to terephthalic acid over Co-Mn-Br catalyst system was studied. Experiments on four levels of guanidine composition were carried out in a semibatch oxidation reactor where the gas and liquid phases were well mixed. The results show that the addition of guanidine apparently accelerates the oxidation of the second methyl group. However, for the oxidation of the first methyl group there is an optimal guanidine composition omega(0). When the composition of guanidine is lower than omega(0), the oxidation rates for the first methyl group increase with the increase of guanidine composition, whereas when the composition of guanidine is higher than omega(0), the oxidation rates decrease with the increase of guanidine composition. Moreover, the addition of guanidine inhibits the side reactions remarkably. A possible mechanism for interpretation of the effect of guanidine on the oxidation of p-xylene to terephthalic acid is presented.

Abstract:Experiments were conducted to elucidate the mechanism of reaction between guaiacol and Ca(OH)(2) in water based on in situ FT-IR, H-1 NMR, ICP-AES and TGA analyses. Three phases were revealed for this reaction when guaiacol was dropped into the solution of Ca(OH)(2), and the final molar ratio of guaiacol to Ca-2 divided by reaches 4. It was found that an acid base reaction occurs in the first reaction phase. However, the second reaction phase includes not only the acid-base reaction, but also the accompanied coordination reaction between oxygen atom of hydroxyl group in guaiacol and Ca2+. The third reaction phase is also the coordination reaction, particularly, the one between the hydrogen atom in guaiacol and Ca2+. Based on the mechanism study, a novel circulating precipitation agent was developed and tested for the extraction of phenolic compounds from the simulated wastewater. The result showed that 96.63% guaiacol could be extracted from the simulated wastewater with the novel extraction technology at the optimum reaction conditions. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:This paper reports on an investigation of the alkylation of guaiacol with isopropanol and cyclohexanol over sulfonated porous aromatic frameworks, designated as PAF-20–SO 3 H and PAF-30–SO 3 H. The catalyst structures were characterized by infrared spectroscopy and low-temperature nitrogen adsorption; the elemental composition and acidity were measured by CHNS analysis and potentiometric titration. The alkylate composition was found to be sensitive to the reaction conditions and catalyst structure. PAF-30–SO 3 H was demonstrated to achieve 58% guaiacol conversion over 2 h of alkylation with cyclohexanol at 250°C and 3 MPa, with the reaction products mostly consisting of benzene ring monoalkylation products. In guaiacol alkylation with isopropanol, the product composition depends on the catalyst structure: after 6 h of reaction, the benzene ring monoalkylation products prevailed (accounting for up to 23% of the total product) in the case of PAF-20–SO 3 H, whereas PAF-30–SO 3 H promoted the yield of a mixture of monoalkylates (up to 34%) and dialkylates (up to 35%).

Abstract:Vapor phase O-ethylation of catechol with ethanol was studied on threecatalysts: Al 1P 1.30, Al 1P 1.30Si 0.17 and Al 1P 1.30Ti 0.30Si 0.17, which were prepared by precipitation method. Among the samples studied, Al 1P 1.30Ti 0.30Si 0.17 had the highest conversion of catechol(94%) and yield of guathol(84%) and stabilize to 100?h.

Abstract:Guaiacol was chosen to represent O-containing chemicals with lower effective hydrogen carbon ratio (H/Ceff factor) in bio-oil, and the hydrodeoxygenation of guaiacol was investigated over non-precious and non-sulfided catalysts. Effects of metal composition, reaction temperature, and hydrogen pressure on conversion and selectivity were investigated systematically. Among various compositions of catalysts, NiCo/CNT exhibited best performance of guaiacol conversion with higher selectivity towards desired alcohols with higher H/Ceff factor. The reaction pathways of guaiacol in aqueous were proposed based on the product analyzed. Results show that metal composition and temperature have great effects on the conversion of guaiacol and the yields of desired products.

Abstract:The effects of preparation conditions such as reaction agent, precipitator, pH value, concentration of solution and deposition method on catalytic performance of Al-P-Si-O catalyst were studied. The results showed that the catalyst prepared by precipitation method can give the best catalytic performance when using Al-(OH)(3) as Al source, using SiO2 sot as Si source, using Ti(OBu)(4) as Ti source, using NH3 solution as precipitator, pH = 6.2 and 0.64 mol/L ( V(H2O) = 200 ml). The acid properties greatly influence the catatytic performance of the catalyst in oxyethylation of catechol with MeOH. The guaiacol selectvity decreases as the acid strength increases. The acid quantity and the pore size are important factors for the catalyst activity and the Bronsted acid sites are responsible for the active centers of the catalyst in the reaction.

Abstract:Alicyclobacillus acidoterrestris has recently received much attention due to its implication in the spoilage of pasteurized fruit juices, which was manifested by the production of guaiacol. Vanillic acid and vanillin have been accepted as the biochemical precursors of guaiacol in fruit juices. The purpose of this study was to try to find other precursors and elucidate details about the conversion of vanillic acid and vanillin to guaiacol by A. acidoterrestris. Four potential substrates including ferulic acid, catechol, phenylalanine and tyrosine were analyzed, but they could not be metabolized to guaiacol by all the thirty A. acidoterrestris strains tested. Resting cell studies and enzyme assays demonstrated that vanillin was reduced to vanillyl alcohol by NADPH-dependent vanillin reductase and oxidized to vanillic acid by NAD(P)(+)-dependent vanillin dehydrogenases in A. acidoterrestris DSM 3923. Vanillic acid underwent a nonoxidative decarboxylation to guaiacol. The reversible vanillic acid decarboxylase involved was oxygen insensitive and pyridine nucleotide-independent.
Study on Coke-Deposition Behavior of Solid Acid Catalyst for Vapor Mono-Etherification of Catechol

Abstract:Both guathol (o-ethoxyphenol) and guaiacol (o-methoxyphenol) are the important synthesis intermediates. They were conventionally prepared by liquid phase process. However, generally, the synthetic reactions are extremely expensive, corrosive, toxic and environmental hazardous. Therefore, several solid catalysts have been attempted for selective synthesis of guathol or guaiacol by vapor-phase alkylation of catechol, but no investigation focused on the deactivation of the catalysts. In this paper, the coke-deposition behavior of the catalyst for vapor mono-etherification of catechol was studied using TG-DTA, BET, GC-MS, FT-IR and elementary analysis. The results showed that two kinds of coke exist on the catalyst surface. The soluble coke consists of diphenyl ether and its derivants, it can be eliminated by calcination at lower temperature. The insoluble coke is polymer of aromatic hydrocarbons with hydrogen-deficiency or carbon with graphite-like structure, their elimination needs higher temperature. Most of soluble coke is adsorbed in mesopores with pore size from 4 to 8 nm, leading to the increase of the fraction of lager pores. The amount of coke increases with increasing reaction time.

Abstract:Catalytic hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) is a critical technique for upgrading biomass derivatives to deoxygenated fuels or other high-value compounds. Phenol, guaiacol, anisole, p-cresol, m-cresol and vanillin are all monomeric phenolics produced from lignin. Guaiacol is often utilised as a model lignin compound to deduce mechanistic information about the bio-oil upgrading process. Typically, a source of H2 is supplied as reactant for the HDO reaction. However, the H2 supply, due to the high cost of production and additional safety precautions needed for storage and transportation, imposes significant economic infeasibilities on the HDO process's scaling up. We investigated a novel H2-free hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) reaction of guaiacol at low temperatures and pressures, using water as both a reaction medium and hydrogen source. A variety of Ni catalysts supported on zirconia/ graphene/with/without nitrogen doping were synthesised and evaluated at 250 degrees C and 300 degrees C in a batch reactor, with the goal of performing a multi-step tandem reaction including water splitting followed by HDO. The catalysts were characterised using H2-TPR, XRD, TEM and XPS to better understand the physicochemical properties and their correlation with catalytic performance of the samples in the HDO process. Indeed, our NiZr2O/Gr-n present the best activity/selectivity balance and it is deemed as a promising catalyst to conduct the H2-free HDO reaction. The catalyst reached commendable conversion levels and selectivity to mono-oxygenated compounds considering the very challenging reaction conditions. This innovative HDO approach provides a new avenue for cost-effective biomass upgrading.
Kinetic Studies on the Liquid‐phase Catalytic Oxidation of 4‐methyl Guaiacol to Vanillin

Abstract:Kinetic studies on the catalytic oxidation of 4‐methyl guaiacol using an ether intermediate towards vanillin in an agitator bubbling reactor were presented. The reaction was catalyzed by N,N′‐ethylenebis(acetylacetoniminato)‐cobalt(II) hexafluorophosphoric pyridinium (Co‐[Salen‐Py][PF6]2) under strong alkaline conditions with molecular oxygen as the terminal oxidant. The reaction scheme was demonstrated by a detailed analysis of the products distribution and control experiments. The intrinsic kinetics were explored based on our proposed p‐benzoquinone methide mechanism, which revealed that the oxidation rate was determined by the oxidation of phenoxyl anion to phenoxyl radical catalyzed by LCo3+(O2·) (L = [Salen‐Py][PF6]2). The kinetic experiments were performed under a mass transfer‐reaction condition due to the inevitable mass transfer resistance involved. Pseudo‐first order fast reactions were observed for both steps of the consecutive reactions based on the calculated physical and mass transfer parameters. The intrinsic kinetic equations for the first and second steps can be written as and , respectively, which are well in accordance with the mechanism. These conclusions are expected to give a clue for the mechanistic study, kinetic investigation, reaction optimization, and catalyst design for the oxidation of various p‐cresols.
A solid acid-catalyzed depolymerization of pine lignin to obtain guaiacol using a hydrogen-free strategy

Abstract:Guaiacol is an important raw material to produce many value-added chemicals. Here, we report a strategy for directly cleaving the C ar -C α and C β -O bonds in pine lignin over a solid acid to generate guaiacol. The guaiacol yield in 90% methanol aqueous solution is up to 18.2 wt%, which is 5.6 wt% higher than that in methanol. The reaction pathway is proposed by combining controlled experiments with density functional theory. Different from previous views, the C ar -C α bond cleavage was found to be related to deacetylation, while the formation of C α =O bond was found to change the intramolecular charge distribution and promote the C ar -C α bond cleavage through validation experiments. Adding water promotes methanol decomposition to produce more active hydrogen species and thereby promote the C ar -C α bond cleavage. This work provided a feasible pathway for obtaining guaiacol by directly cleaving the C ar -C α and C β -O bonds in lignin.

Abstract:Guaiacol, a mono-aromatic compound containing a hydroxyl and a methoxyl group, is one of the main products from lignin pyrolysis. In order to investigate the feasibility of aromatic hydrocarbons production from lignin, guaiacol was employed as the model compound for the catalytic conversion over HZSM-5 zeolites with different Si/Al ratios in a fixed-bed reactor under the temperatures from 500 degrees C to 800 degrees C. With the increased temperature, the yield of both aromatic hydrocarbons (such as benzene, toluene, styrene, naphthalene and 2-methylnaphtalene) and coke was increased from the mass fraction of 1.83%-24.27% and from 1.17% to 12.81%, respectively. At 600 degrees C, the yield of benzene was promoted by the HZSM-5 catalyst with high Si/Al ratio (200) by the mass fraction of 2.94% and up to 1.94% for that of toluene. The production of monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (especially for benzene and p-xylene) was favored with the loading of Ni on HZSM-5(25), while the formation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons was notably inhabited. The coke deposition was slightly increased with the increased loading of Ni during the catalytic conversion of guaiacol. The demethoxylation and dehydroxylation reactions were considered to be promoted by the increase of Bronsted acid sites, while the methyl substitution reaction was slightly influenced by the total acidity of catalyst. The experimental results provided the conceptual and technical support for the catalytic pyrolysis of lignin to produce aromatic hydrocarbons. (c) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Thermochemical Conversion of Guaiacol with Supercritical CO2: Experimental Insights

Abstract:The excessive CO2 in the environment resulting from the combustion of fossil fuels has posed a significant challenge in terms of its conversion and utilization. In this work, the thermochemical conversion of guaiacol under supercritical CO2 (scCO2) was proposed, which not only enabled the consumption of CO2 but also facilitated the conversion of biomass into valuable products. It was concluded that the carbon gasification efficiency (CE) and hydrogen gasification efficiency (HE) were 37.10% and 51.77%, respectively, when the CO reached the maximum of 8.72 ± 0.28 mol/kg at 700°C for 20 min. The addition of catalyst promoted the production of H2 and increased CE, the H2 yield of guaiacol gasification under different catalysts was ordered as Al2O3 > KOH > without catalyst > KCl. As the reaction temperature increased, the un-reacted guaiacol and phenol decreased and were gradually converted to liquid products such as pyrene and benzo[c]phenanthrene. With the increase of reaction temperature, the more fully guaiacol was reacted, the easier it was to carbonize and form more carbon microspheres. In addition, reaction pathways for free radicals were proposed, including cleavage of free radicals, isomerization of free radicals, secondary cleavage of free radicals and recombination of free radicals. In short, degrading guaiacol using scCO2 is a feasible approach, which provides a new direction for the disposal and energy recovery of biomass in the future.
Polymerization of guaiacol by lignin-degrading manganese peroxidase from Bjerkandera adusta in aqueous organic solvents

Abstract:Lignin-degrading manganese (II) peroxidase (MnP) purified from the culture of a wood-rotting basidiomycete, Bjerkandera adusta, was used in the polymerization of guaiacol. MnP was found to catalyze polymerization of guaiacol in 50% aqueous acetone, dimethyl formamide, methanol, ethanol, dioxane, acetonitrile, ethylene glycol and methylcellosolve. Maximum yield of polyguaiacol was achieved in 50% aqueous acetone. The weight average molecular weight (Mw) of the polymer was estimated to be 30,300 by gel permeation chromatography. However, matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time of flight mass spectroscopy (MALDI-TOF-MS) analysis gave a more reliable Mw of 1,690. IR, 13C-NMR, MALDI-TOF-MS and pyrolysis GC-MS analyses showed the presence of C-C and C-O linkages and quinone structure in polyguaiacol. It was also indicated that polyguaiacol has a methoxy-phenyl group as the terminal moiety. This suggests that polyguaiacol is a branched polymer in which guaiacol units are cross-linked at the phenolic group. Thermal gravimetric and differential scanning calorimetric analyses were also carried out. MnP also catalyzed the polymerization of o-cresol, 2,6-dimethoxyphenol and other phenolic compounds and aromatic amines. Mw of these polymers ranged from around 1,000 to 1,500.
Synthesis of [uniformly Ring‐14c]‐labelled 4‐hydroxybenzaldehyde, Vanillin, and Protocatechualdehyde

Abstract:Abstract[Uniformly ring‐14C]‐labelled 4‐hydroxybenzaldehyde, vanillin, and protocatechualdehyde were synthesized from [14C]‐labelled phenol, guaiacol, and catechol with methyl dichloromethyl sulfide (CH3SCHCl2) under Friedel–Crafts alkylation conditions in dichloromethane at −78°C for 5 min (in the case of phenol and guaiacol) or at −20°C for 1 min (in the case of catechol), by rapid addition of SnCl4 to mixtures of the phenolic compound and CH3SCHCl2, followed by hydrolysis with HCl. Regioselective formylation (para to the –OH group) was achieved. The conversion rates were 96, 81, and 88% for 4‐hydroxybenzaldehyde, vanillin, and protocatechualdehyde, respectively, and the yields of the recovered products after work‐up amounted to 88, 75, and 83%, respectively. In the case of guaiacol, 17% of isovanillin was obtained as by‐product. It was found that the presence of water or ethyl acetate in the reaction mixture, at a molar ratio of 60:1 (water:guaiacol) or 120:1 (ethyl acetate:guaiacol), had little influence on the yields under the reaction conditions. Abstract:A cobalt Schiff base catalyst with ionic substituents on the ligand, N,N'-ethylenebis(acetylacetoniminato)-cobalt(II) hexafluorophosphoric pyridinium (Co-[Salen-Py][PF6](2)), was synthesized. It displayed an excellent catalytic performance for the oxidation of 4-methyl guaiacol to vanillin (conversion = 100%, selectivity = 90%). Tentative reaction mechanism research indicated that the electron-withdrawing pyridinium substituent on the ligand of Co(acacen) is responsible for the high selectivity of vanillin. Meanwhile, utilizing ethylene glycol and water as solvent, vanillin can be isolated by simple crystallization in the form of a sodium salt, and the mother liquid of the crystallization, with a large amount of NaOH (the mole ratio of NaOH/4-methyl guaiacol = 2.38/1), can be successfully recycled at least three times, thereby decreasing the mole ratio of base/substrate from 3.3 : 1 to 1.05 : 1 when the mother liquid of crystallization was recycled. This strategy provides a potentially greener alternative for the synthesis of vanillin in industry.

Abstract:The high value-added products such as alkyl substituted phenols (A-Ps) are very important from lignin-derived feedstocks. Herein, the selective conversion of guaiacol, an important chemical of lignin-derived bio-oil, to A-Ps over hydrothermally synthesized bulk MoS2 (HT-MoS2) was examined under supercritical methanol conditions without any gaseous hydrogen input. HRTEM confirms the formation of MoS2 with the nanosheet-like structure and XPS analysis exhibited the presence of Mo5+ and S22- species which are likely the active species for demethoxylation (DMO) and alkylation of guaiacol. The possible reaction pathways along with their plausible intermediates of guaiacol conversion are proposed. The HT-MoS2 catalyst can be reused up to 4 catalytic runs without loss of its catalytic activity.

Abstract:This study investigated the catalytic effect of Enteromorpha-based char (EPC) on guaiacol. FTIR and XPS characterization were used to confirm the functional groups of EPC, mainly oxygen-containing and nitrogen-containing. The experimental results of catalytic pyrolysis of guaiacol showed that the conversion of guaiacol without catalyst was 38.09%, and after the addition of EPC the conversion of guaiacol increased with the increase of EPC mass until complete conversion. Based on the experimental and characterization results, the catalytic mechanism of guaiacol over EPCs with different kinds of functional groups was investigated by density functional theory (DFT). According to the energy analysis of DFT, the catalytic model containing carboxyl and hydroxyl groups showed excellent adsorption performance for guaiacol. The DFT calculation result also indicates that guaiacol can be converted to phenol over EPC catalytic model with carboxyl and hydroxyl groups through elementary reactions with lower reaction energy barriers. Pyridine and pyrrole functional groups also have a good catalytic effect of lowering the energy barrier in N-containing species. This contribution provides an alternative way to gain insight into the mechanism of catalytic pyrolysis of guaiacol on EPC at both the experimental and molecular levels, and may help to design more efficient biochar catalysts.
