Abstract:The prediction and evaluation of the change characteristics of non-homogeneous debris flow are an important content of debris flow control project planning and early warning and forecasting system construction. They are also a key issue that needs to be improved in the field of debris flow. By sorting out and analyzing the measured data of the mud level and velocity of the debris flow, a prediction model of the characteristic value of the non-homogeneous debris flow movement is constructed. Based on the previous results, the model can distinguish the change characteristics of the debris flow movement in the study area with fewer factors. Taking the mud-rock flow in Xiahuyang Gully, Lixian County, Longnan area as an example, the FLO-2D fluid model is used to simulate the movement characteristics of debris flow under precipitation conditions of once in 50 years(2% frequency) and once in 20 years(5% frequency). The results show that when the specific weight gravity of debris flow is 1.83t ·m-3, the characteristic value of debris flow movement in Xiahuyang Gully in 20 years is the smallest and the difference is not significant. When the specific weight gravity of debris flow is 1.97t ·m-3, the characteristic value of debris flow movement in Xiahuyang Gully is once in 50 years the biggest and the difference is huge. When the flow of debris flows of different scales reaches the peak, they all produce larger mud level depth. The simulation results of the debris flow movement characteristic value are further combined with the actual measured cross-sections for inspection and analysis. The peak flow rate of the debris flow event is inferred and is in good agreement with the actual situation, indicating that the results calculated by the prediction model of this paper are reliable. The results in this paper can provide a reference for the construction of debris flow disaster prevention and mitigation and debris flow monitoring and early warning demonstration areas.

Abstract:Hupiwan,Liangfeng and Aomiluo gullies in Dechang Country of Sichuan are three typical debris flow gullies entering the Cida River.The hazard degrees of debris flow gullies are 0.49,0.65 and 0.45 respectively;the vulnerability degrees are 0.79,0.82 and 0.81 respectively;the risks are separately 0.39,0.53 and 0.37 belonging in high risk debris flow gullies and being easy to cause large debris flow disaster losses.Being in continuing high-intensity rainstorm,the debris flows broke out in three gullies on Aug.24,2004, and resulted in large losses.The paper establishes debris flow loss assessment,and serves the loss assessment of the three debris flow disasters.Furthermore,aiming at the high risk gullies,the paper gives prevention advices so as to mitigate and control the debris flow disasters in the future.

Abstract:The debris flow occurred in Qiongshan gully of Danba county of Sichuan,China. It had been rained about 70 days before debris flow occurred. That made the sediments in the gully to be completely saturated in water. At last, the debris flow was triggered by a rainstorm at night of July 11, 2003. Lacking of consciousness and knowledge of preventing hazard and shortage of communication equipments, the debris flow caused very serious losses of life and property. The countermeasures against debris flow in Qiongshan gully are, on the one hand, to set up an effective system of monitoring and forecasting; on the other hand, to improve peoples' consciousness of preventing hazard and the ability of saving themselves.
Characteristics and Hazard Assessment of Debris Flow in Chayuan Gully of Wenchuan County in Sichuan

Abstract:The debris flow occurring on August 9, 2003 in Chayuan Gully of Wenchuan County of Sichuan, caused 1 death, 10 the missing and serious loss of property. Debris flow was triggered by the short duration and high intensity rainstorm. The maximum velocity of debris flow was 10.8 m/s. The maximum discharge of debris flow was (999 m~(3)/s.) The runout deposits of debris flow were about 50 000 m~(3). The density of the loose materials in Chayuan Gully is 2.17 g/cm~(3), and the water content is 10.7%, and the porosity is 28%. Plasticity limit of the materials is 18.8%; liquefaction limit of the materials is 32.5%. When runing into big storm or long-lasting rain, debris flow easily occurs in the catchment. Chayuan Gully is classed as moderate hazardous catchment, but the catchment likewise caused serious losses of life and property. This is mainly because of the characteristics of the vulnerability in the catchment. The countermeasures against debris flow in Chayuan gully is, on the one hand, to reforest the catchment and stopping mining; on the other hand, to rebuild the highway and bridge with a higher standard to prevent debris flow, and reasonably layout the electric infrastructure.
Debris flow risk assessment in Zhifang gully of Dechang county, Sichuan

Abstract:Zhifang gully of Dechang county in Sichuan is a main debris flow gully entering Anning river from left bank. The bridges of Chengdu-Kunming railway and No. 108 national highway cross the gully exit. Hupingkou bridge of 108 national highway was almost completely silted by the deposits of debris flows, and Xichang-Pangzhihua highway under construction will pass here on the opposite of Anning river. More than 20 families, totally 150 persons live on the accumulation fan of the debris flow. Because of the tremendous impact and destruction, the debris flow directly threatens the safety of the traffic lines, properties and people lives. Zhifang gully debris flow hazardousness is 0.60, vulnerability is 0.85, and risk is 0.51, which is a debris flow gully with high hazardousness, very high vulnerability and high risk. Therefore, it is necessary to carry on a precaution alarm system so as to forecast debris flow when it occurs. Furthermore, the civil engineering should be conducted here for the propose of prevention and controlling the debris flows.

Abstract:Shuanglong Gully,located in New town of Jiuzhaigou,is one of the tributaries of the left bank of Baishuijiang River in Jialingjiang River system.The gully has been burst into great debris flow.In recent years,some middle and small debris flows happened occasionally,which directly threaten the safety of roads,villages and bridges in the middle and lower deposition area of the river.In this paper,through analyzing the geology,landform,climate condition,the authors can get the result that Shuanglong Gully has the nature conditions to happen.The developing tendency of debris flow is pronely,high frequently,and with great damage.Based on the field investigation and laboratory analysis,the majority of solid material stems with landslide and gully-bed deposits.The coarse particle size is big,the bulk density is great with 1.63t/m3.It belongs to the viscous debris flow.Based on the integrated analysis,a controlling strategy has been put forward mainly with stability,guide and prevention,and supplementedly with biological treatment,warning and forecasting.

Abstract:The debris flow in Sewanzu gully was located in Heishui county of Sichuan province, which was 5.12 Wenchuan of sichuan earthquake severely disaster. It was large and very likely outbreak, which not only had posed a serious threat to the lives and properties of people, but also affected the reconstruction work going on smoothly. According to the basic features of the valley and the debris flow, the dynamic parameters,such as bulk density,flow rate,flow capacity and sediment flush-out were calculated.And then the hazard of the debris flow was evaluated quantitatively. The results could provide the basis for the governance and disaster prevention and mitigation of the debris flow gully.
Investigation of 20 August 2019 Catastrophic Debris Flows Triggered by Extreme Rainstorms Near Epicentre of Wenchuan Earthquake

Abstract:A strong earthquake could trigger a large number of co-seismic landslides and induce large amount of loose materials on steep slopes and in the gullies. Under strong rainfall conditions, these loose materials could induce devastating debris flows, which will endanger the resettled population and destroy the re-built infrastructures. From 19 to 20 August 2019, fourteen debris flows were triggered by extreme rainstorms near the epicentre of the Wenchuan Earthquake. Among the fourteen incidents, three of them produced debris flow dams, which changed the course of the Minjiang River and resulted in flooding at different parts of the reconstructed Miansi town. In addition, sixteen casualties, twenty two missing persons, and destruction of four main roads were reported. In this paper, one typical catchment, named as “Dengxi gully”, near the epicentre of the Wenchuan earthquake (Sichuan Province, China) was chosen as a case study for remote sensing analysis, field investigation of landslide evolution and debris flow development before and after the catastrophic events. The debris flow in the study area was initiated in four stages: (a) generation of a large amount of loose materials from the Wenchuan Earthquake; (b) run-off erosion from co-seismic landslide material on hilly slopes and repeated mobilizations in steep channels over the years; (c) development of high intensity localised rainfall events; (d) wash out of accumulated materials in gully by the flood. The study of “8.20 debris flows” can provide a benchmark for analysis of long-term evolution of debris flows in order to identify potential continuing hazards in the earthquake-affected areas and make proper engineering decisions.

Abstract:A large-scale debris flow occurred in Tongzilin Gully in Puge County, Sichuan Province in southwestern China from 4:00 a.m. to 4:30 a.m. on August 8, 2017. Although early warning measures were taken before the occurrence of the debris flow, the disaster resulted in 25 fatalities, the destruction of 71 houses, and economic losses amounting to 160 million RMB. This study aimed to analyze the movement characteristics of the debris flow, reveal the cause and mechanism of the catastrophe, and assist in avoiding similar future disasters. To this end, we calculated the debris flow density, velocity, and peak discharge and analyzed the dynamic characteristics of the debris flow. The distributions of regional precipitation and solid materials were also determined to analyze the formation conditions. Moreover, the debris flow blockage and disaster amplification mechanisms were investigated through field surveys, remote sensing images, and parameter calculation. The results show that the debris flow was a low-frequency turbulent event with a peak flow rate of once in a hundred years and an average velocity of 6.34 m/s. The debris flow developed under unique conditions, corresponding to the combined action of natural and anthropogenic factors. First, the low-frequency debris flow was initiated by antecedent drought and short-term heavy rainfall. The antecedent drought increased the amount of loose materials in the watershed (141.5 × 104 m3). The antecedent drought and short-term heavy rainfall nearly doubled the scale of the debris flow. Second, coarse particles blocked road culverts in the study area, leading to overflow and exacerbating the disaster. Consequently, the affected area and scale of the debris flow have been enlarged by 25% and by two times, respectively. The study findings provide deeper insight into the initiation and development mechanisms of debris flow disasters in mountainous areas, which may help improve the monitoring, early warning, and forecasting system.

Abstract:On 8 August 2017, an Ms 7.0 earthquake struck Jiuzhaigou Valley, triggering abundant landslides and providing a huge source of material for potential debris flows. After the earthquake debris flows were triggered by heavy rainfall, causing traffic disruption and serious property losses. This study aims to describe the debris flow events in Zechawa Gully, calculate the peak discharges of the debris flows, characterize the debris flow disasters, propose mitigation countermeasures to control these disasters and analyse the effectiveness of countermeasures that were implemented in May 2019. The results showed the following: (1) The frequency of the debris flows in Zechawa Gully with small- and medium-scale will increase due to the influence of the Ms 7.0 Jiuzhaigou earthquake. (2) An accurate debris flow peak discharge can be obtained by comparing the calculated results of four different methods. (3) The failure of a check dam in the channel had an amplification effect on the peak discharge, resulting in a destructive debris flow event on 4 August 2016. Due to the disaster risk posed by dam failure, both blocking and deposit stopping measures should be adopted for debris flow mitigation. (4) Optimized engineering countermeasures with blocking and deposit stopping measures were proposed and implemented in May 2019 based on the debris flow disaster characteristics of Zechawa Gully, and the reconstructed engineering projects were effective in controlling a post-earthquake debris flow disaster on 21 June 2019.

Abstract:On August 7,2010,an extraordinarily serious flash flood and debris flow disaster occurred which caused great loss of life and property.This paper analyzed its causes,and pointed out that the special geological and geomorphic conditions were the potential reasons,high-intensity rainstorm was the inducing one,and irrational human activities,such as reclamation on steep slopes by cutting trees,building hydroelectric stations without rational measures,and living on landslide body etc.strengthened the disaster.Based on the analysis,some countermeasures for Zhouqu County as well as other similar regions were given.Firstly,deepening studies on geological disaster,and reinforcing building of soil and water conservation measures were quietly required.Secondly,returning land for farming to forest and eco-environmental protection should be paid attention to.Thirdly,canonical constructing hydroelectric stations,road,and the infrastructure in city were needed.Fourthly,sound forecasting and prewarning net system were also required.Furthermore,the measures and the consciousness of preventing debris flow should be publicized among the people that are the base to prevent and control mudflow disaster.

Abstract:A debris flow broke out on July 8, 2004 in Qieduke gully of Seda county, Sichuan province, and caused economic loss. “7.8”debris flow in Qieduke gully is classified as moderate-scale and moderate-hazardous catchment. The debris flow, with maximum velocity of 10.4 m/s, maximum discharge of 156 m3/s, and runout deposits of 70,000 m3, had the characteristics of high density, strong impact and straight movement. So “7.8” debris flow in Qieduke gully was of viscosity. This paper made a quantitative research on the evolution stage, hazardousness and the maximal dangerous boundary of the debris flow in Qieduke basin. Countermeasures against debris flow of Qieduke gully include constructing protection wall against erosion at the bend of the gully and building a valley shop at the upper stream in Sequ river.

Abstract:Abstract Based on the on-site investigation of debris flow disasters in Mengdong River Basin of Malipo County on September 2, 2018, the characteristics of disasters and their formation and evolution process are analyzed from the aspects of source, topography and water resources. Heavy rainfall is the inducement factor of this debris flow. The complex topographic and geomorphological features in the channel provide conditions for the evolution and scale-up of the debris flow: (1) hundreds of shallow soil landslides in the region provide sufficient material resources for the debris flow, enhance the hydrodynamic conditions of the debris flow and increase the amount of erosion along the way; (2) multiple bedrock entrapments and falls in the channel enlarged the debris flow. The scale and velocity of debris flow; (3) The volume weight of debris flow increases gradually with the supply of solid materials along the way. The study shows that precipitation is the fundamental cause of debris flow. The precipitation causes the initiation and overlap of landslide, slope and channel sources in the valley. From the development trend, the debris flow in the valley is in the stage of high frequency development, and the possibility of large-scale debris flow still exists. The possibility and frequency of occurrence will be greatly increased. High frequency and small and medium-sized debris flows will be the characteristics of debris flow activities in this gully in the future. It is necessary to control ditches in time and strengthen monitoring and early warning.
Debris flows in Meigu county of Sichuan (SW China): Geomorphology and hazards

Abstract:A torrential rainstorm on June 1, 2005 in Meigu county of Sichuan province, SW China, resulted in the generation of debris flows from two drainage basins. Map (1:50000 scale) of topography and depositing materials, coupled with the data from meteorological station and field investigation, are used to evaluate the geomorphology and hazard characteristics of debris flows. The return period of debris flows is 20 years and its magnitude is small-moderate scale. Rainstorm and hail with short duration and high intensity in the upper reaches of drainage basins are the triggering factor for debris flows. Unstable side slope in low-middle reaches and a large number of scattered materials in channels provide source materials for debris flows. Grain-size curves of debris flows are multiple peaks. The high clay content, boulder piling up boulder, mud crack show that the debris flows are viscous. Abstract:Abstract On August 20, 2019, at 2 a.m., a disastrous debris flow occurred in Chediguan gully in Yinxing town, China. The debris flow destroyed the drainage groove and the bridge at the exit of the gully. In addition, the debris flow temporarily blocked the Minjiang River during the flood peak, flooding the Taipingyi hydropower station 200 m upstream and leaving two plant workers missing. To further understand the activity of the debris flow after the Wenchuan earthquake, the characteristics of this debris flow event were studied. Eleven years after the Wenchuan earthquake, a disastrous debris flow still occurred in the Chediguan catchment, causing more severe losses than those of earlier debris flows. In this paper, the formation mechanism and dynamic characteristics of this debris flow event are analysed based on a drone survey, high-definition remote sensing interpretations and other means. The catastrophic debris flow event indicates that debris flows in the Wenchuan earthquake area are still active. A large amount of dredging work in the main gully could effectively reduce the debris flow risk in the gully. In addition, it is also important to repair or rebuild damaged mitigation measures and to establish a real-time monitoring and early warning system for the high-risk gully.

Abstract:Large numbers of field investigation and observation have revealed the distribution regularity of debris flow disaster along the Sichuan-Tibet highway in Sichuan province,which consists of four zones respectively in Longdanxi catchment,in Yajiang catchment,in Bogexi catchment and in Batang-Jinshajiang catchment.Specially,debris flow disasers are deeply serious in both Bogexi and Batang-Jinshajiang catchments, there are 24 giant debris flows with their basin areas over 20 km~2.From east to west along the highway,debris flows evolve gradually from torrents with various rocks to dilute debris flows.The environment to develop debris flow disasters along the highway is characterized of complex geological tectonic actions,landforms with deep valleys and high mountains,active earthquakes,intense precipitation,and abundant thawing water from snow and ice.Four types of mechanisms to trigger debris flows can be classified generally,i.e.,rainfall impact,strength attenuation,erosion cutting and drawing.More than 30 giant debris flow disasters have been harnessed with the technical measures of bank protection works,highspeed drainage structures,anti-impact structures,guiding-flow dams,energy releasing ridges etc.since 2003,which have ensured significantly the communication service of the Sichuan-Tibet highway.
