Abstract:Cuba can be divided into four parts according to the stratigraphic characteristics, including the north-western Yucatan unit, the north-central Bahama unit, the Central Cretaceous Arc unit and the South Arc unit. The Yucatan unit is a residual basin of ancient continent. The Jurassic continental stratigraphy only exists in the north-western Yucatan unit. The Jurassic marine stratum occurs in the north-central Bahama unit. The Central Arc sequence is a Cretaceous arc with basalt, extrusive rock and volcanic clastic rock. The South Arc sequence with Paleocene volcanic stratum in the south area is different from the other regions. We consider that the four different parts of Cuba came from different plate as exhibited by their unique stratigraphy. The Yucatan unit originated from the Yucatan platform and the Bahama unit was formed at the Bahama platform in Jurassic. The Central Arc unit derived from the Caribbean Arc in Cretaceous and the South Arc unit came from the Caribbean Arc at Paleocene. During the K-T boundary, the Caribbean Arc collided with the North American plate margin. The collision cohered the various parts of Cuba together, and promoted the development of the fold-thrust belt and related basins.
