Abstract:The carbon abundance on the surface of pyrite, which occurs in mine waste, is usually high. The high level carbon may reflect CO_2 or / and [CO_3]~(2-) and [HCO_3]~- absorbed, or / and carbonate minerals precipitated or /and bacteria presented in the surface. The data of XPS analysis showed the adsorption of CO_2 cannot account for the high abundance carbon on pyrite surface. XRD spectra indicated the carbonate minerals don′t occur in the weathering surface of pyrite. These pyrites were collected from low pH sulfide-oxidation zone of waste rock pile, suggesting also that the surface of these pyrites unlikely occur precipitation of carbonate minerals and absorption of [CO_3]~(2-) and [HCO_3]~-. In low pH oxidation zone of mine waste, bacteria thiobacillus ferrooxidans and leptospirillum ferrooxidans are abundant and catalyze the oxidation of sulfide. Therefore, the high content of carbon on weathering surface of pyrite is combination of adsorbed CO_2 and organic C, suggests the bacteria occurring.
