Spatial Distribution and Influencing Factors of Social Vulnerability to Natural Hazards in the Middle-Lower Reaches of the Yangtze River

Abstract:In the face of increasingly severe climate changes, study of regional social vulnerability is conducive to better coping with extreme weather events and associated hazards. To quantify regional social vulnerability to natural hazards in the middle-lower reaches of the Yangtze River, and investigate the economic and cultural drivers, we referred to the SoVI model and index system and selected 36 variables for each of the 65 analysis units in the study area. Using factor analysis, seven main factors constituting social vulnerabili-ty were identified. The final social vulnerability index was calculated combining the seven main factors and the spatial distribution was mapped. The results show that the social vulnerability in the area obviously varies from west to east. The eastern developed regions and the capital cities of all the provinces are characterized with low vulnerability, while the high vulnerable areas are mainly concentrated in the central and western parts, especially the mountainous areas and minority autonomous prefectures.
