Abstract:Eleven compounds were isolated and elucidated from Ceratocarpus arenarius L.(Chenopodiaceae).Their structures were identified as 7-Oxo-β-sitosterol(1),β-sitosterol(2),stigmasteryl-3-O-β-D-glucopyranoside(3),n-hexadecanol(4),stigmast-4-en-3-one(5),173-ethoxyphaeophorbidea(6),tricin(7),moupinamide(8),1,2-benzenedicarboxylic acid,bis(2-ethylhexyl)ester(9),β-sitosteryl linoleate(10) and syringaresinol mono-β-D-glucoside(11).All of these compounds were isolated from C.arenarius L.for the first time.The above compounds were individually identified by spectroscopic analyses and comparisons with reported data.

Phytochemical content and antioxidant activity in aqueous extracts of Cyclocarya paliurus leaves collected from different populations

Abstract:Cyclocarya paliurus (Batal) Iljinskaja is a multiple function tree species, but its main utilization is for the harvesting of its leaves as materials for tea production and recently as ingredients for the food industry. In this study aqueous extracts of C. paliurus leaves collected from 21 natural populations were evaluated for their phytochemical content and antioxidant activity. The content of water-soluble polysaccharide, total flavonoid and total polyphenol varied from 66.05 to 153.32 mg/g, 9.01 to 19.65 mg/g and 20.80 to 52.69 mg/g, respectively. Quercetin-3-O-glucuronide, aemferol-3-O-glucuronide and 3-O-caffeoylquinic acid were the major phenolic components in aqueous extracts of C. paliurus leaves. Both redundancy analysis and Pearson's correlation analysis indicated that water-soluble polysaccharide, total polyphenol, total flavonoid, quercetin-3-O-glucuronide, 3-O-caffeoylquinic acid and 4-O-caffeoylquinic acid were significantly correlated with antioxidant activity, but total polyphenol showed the greatest contribution to antioxidant capacity. The antioxidant activity of the 21 populations was classified into six distinct groups based on the squared Euclidean distance. These results would provide a theoretical basis for obtaining the greatest yield of targeted antioxidant phytochemicals of C. paliurus leaves for tea and food ingredient production.

Abstract:The leaves of Cyclocarya paliurus with sweet taste are often used as herbal tea in People's Republic of China. In this study eight previously undescribed seco-dammarane type triterpenoids, cyclocariols A-H along with seven known compounds were isolated and characterized from its leaves. A possible biogenetic pathway for seco-dammarane type triterpenoids formation has been discussed. Cyclocariols A-H were evaluated for their cytotoxicities against human liver (SMMC-7721) and breast cancer (BT-549) cell lines. Cyclocariols A, B, E, and H were also tested against human colon tumor (HCT-116) cell lines, where all four exhibited good activities with IC50 values of 6.53, 4.94, 8.24, and 6.48 μM, respectively.
[Non-alkaloid chemical constituents from Coptis chinensis]

Abstract:Objective: To separate and identify chemical constituents from Coptis chinensis. Method: The compounds were separated and purified by various chromatographic techniques. Their structures were identified on the basis of their physicochemical properties using spectral techniques such as NMR and MS. Result: Thirteen compounds were separated from ethanol extracts of C. chinensis, including seven lignans, three simple phenylpropanoids, two flavones and one phenolic acid, and identified as erythro-guaiacylglycerol-8-O-4'-(coniferyl alcohol) ether (1), threo-guaiacylglycerol-8-O-4'-(coniferyl alcohol) ether (2), (+)-pinoresinol (3), (+)-medioresinol (4), (+)-lariciresinol (5), (+)-5'-methoxylariciresinol (6), (+)-isolariciresinol (7), chlorogenic acid (8), ferulic acid (9), Z-octadecyl caffeate (10), rhamnetin (11), wogonin (12), and vanillic acid (13). Conclusion: Compounds 1, 2, 4, 6, 10-13 were separated from the genus Coptis for the first time.

Abstract:Phytochemical investigation of 70% aqueous EtOH extract of Cistanche sinensis led to the isolation of fifteen compounds (1-15), including nine phenylethanoid glycosides (PhGs, 1-9), five iridoid glycosides (10-14), and one lignan glycoside (15). Their structures were determined on the basis of 1D- and 2D-NMR experiments and by comparison with physical data of known compounds. Among the isolated compounds, 1 was identified as a new compound, three compounds (9, 14, and 15) were firstly reported from the genus Cistanche, and seven compounds (2-6, 11, and 12) were isolated from C sinensis for the first time. PhGs with a 6'-O-rhamnosyl moiety such as cistansinenside B (1), poliumoside (7), and 2'-O-acetylpoliumoside (9) could serve as chemotaxonomic markers to differentiate C sinensis from other species of Cistanche. Abstract:A phytochemical study of Cortex Moutan (the dried root bark of Paeonia suffruticosa Andrews) led to the isolation of 24 compounds, including eleven mono-phenols ( 1 – 11 ), seven terpenoids ( 12 – 18 ), three flavonoids ( 19–21 ), two sterols ( 22 and 23 ) and one coumarin ( 24 ). The structures of these isolated compounds were identified using NMR spectroscopy ( 1 H and 13 C) by comparison with previously reported data. To the best of our knowledge, compounds 5 , 11 , 15 , 16 , 22 , and 24 were reported from this plant for the first time. The chemotaxonomic significance of the isolates was also discussed.

Abstract:In order to clarify the chemical constituents of Cistanche deserticola cultured in Tarim desert, a systematically phytochemical investigation was carried out. The chemical constituents were isolated by column chromatography, over silica gel, Sephadex LH-20, MCI gel, ODS and semi-preparative HPLC, and their structures were determined on the basis of MS, NMR spectroscopic data analysis, physicochemical properties and/or comparison with literature data Seventeen compounds were isolated from the 85% ethanol extract of the stems of C. deserticola cultured in Tarim desert. Their structures were identified as salsaside B (1), syringin (2), demethyl syrinyin (3), coniferin (4), (2E,6E)-3,7-dimethyl-8-hydroxyoctadien-1-O-beta-D-glucoside (5), (+)-syringaresinol (6), 2S,3S, 4S-trihydroxypentanoic acid (7), panaxytriol (8), beta-sitosterol-3-O-beta-D-xylopyranoside (9), androsin (10), 3-methyl-but-2-en-1-yl-beta-D-glucopyranoside (11), benzyl-glucopyranoside (12), 4-hydroxybenzyl-beta-D-glucoside (13), nicotinamide (14), p-hydroxybenzoic acid (15), 4-hydroxy-benzeneethanol (16), and galactitol (17). Compounds 3, 6-13 were isolated from this genus for the first time, and compounds 1, 4 and 5 were obtained from this species for the first time.

I and II as lignan compounds from this genus, are reported for the first time.

Abstract:Cyclocarya paliurus (C. paliurus), a nutritional and nutraceutical resource for human and animal diets, has been constantly explored. The available biological components of C. paliurus were triterpenoids, polysaccharides, and flavonoids. Recent studies in phytochemical and pharmacological have shown that C. paliurus performed medicinal value, such as antihypertensive, antioxidant, anticancer, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and immunological activities. Furthermore, C. paliurus and its extracts added to drinks would help to prevent and mitigate chronic diseases. This review provides an overview of the nutritional composition and functional applications of C. paliurus, summarizing the research progress on the extraction methods, structural characteristics, and biological activities. Therefore, it may be a promising candidate for developing functional ingredients in traditional Chinese medicine. However, more than understanding its active compounds and the mechanisms through which they perform biological activities is required. As a result, the plant needs further investigation in vitro and in vivo.

Abstract:Chemical investigation of Imperata cylindrica led to the isolation of thirteen compounds using various chromatographic techniques. The structure of these compounds were identified as: three phenylpropanoids, 1-(3,4,5-trimethoxyphenyl)-1,2,3-propanetriol ( 1 ), 1-O-p-coumaroylglycerol (2), 4-methoxy-5-methyl coumarin-7-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside (3); four organic acids, 4-hydroxybenzene carboxylic acid(4), 3,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid (5), vanillic acid (6), 3, 4-dihydroxybutyric acid (7); one phenolic compound, salicin (8); and five triterpenes, namely, arundoin (9), cylindrin (10), fernenol (11), simiarenol (12), glutinone (13) by their physicochemical properties and spectral data analysis. Among them, compounds 1-8 were isolated from the genus Imperata for the first time.

Abstract:Flavonoids are a class of commonly occurring natural compounds in the plant kingdom with various biological activities. This study compares the content of flavonoids in Cyclocarya paliurus at different developmental stages to better inform the selection of the optimal picking period. Thus, we analyzed the transcriptome and metabolome of C. paliurus at different developmental stages. The transcriptome analysis revealed 44 genes involved in the biosynthesis of flavonoids in C. paliurus, with 10 differentially expressed genes across the four different developmental stages. The metabolites were separated and identified by a combination of chromatography and mass spectrometry, followed by multi-reaction monitoring mode analysis of triple quadrupole mass spectrometry for complete metabolite quantification. In the flavonoid synthesis pathway, a total of 137 differential flavonoids were detected. The joint transcriptome and metabolome analysis showed that the expression trends in differential metabolites and genes were significantly related. Four MYB transcription factors and two bHLH transcription factors that are closely related to flavonoid biosynthesis were identified. The regulation network of flavonoid biosynthesis in C. paliurus was thus established, providing guidance for follow-up research.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To study effective active constituents of Cayratia japonica,a genuine herbal medicine from Fujian.METHOD:Such chromatographic methods as Macroporous, Sephadex LH-20, ODS and normal phase silica gel column chromatography were adopted to separate the chemical components of C. japonica.RESULT:Thirteen compounds were obtained, and their structures were identified by analyzing multiple spectral data as luteolin(1), apigenin(2), triethyl citrate-(3), 3-formylindole(4), esculetin(5), bis(2-ethylhexyl)-phthalate(6), calendin(7), ethyl-trans-3,4-dihydr-oxycinnamate(8), luteolin7-O-D-glucoside(9),5-hydroxy-3,4-dimethyl-5-pentyl-2(5H-furanone(10),ethyl-3,4-dihydroxybenzoate(11), eriodictyol(12) and daucosterol(13).CONCLUSION:Among them, compounds 3-8 and 10-12 were separated from the plant for the first time.

Abstract:A nucleoplasmic histone kinase activity was isolated from livers of adult rats and purified 39-fold compared with whole nuclei by ultracentrifugation of the nuclear extract and Sephadex G-200 gel filtration in the presence of cyclic AMP. Analysis by polyacrylamide-gel electrophoresis as well as by gel filtration indicates a mol.wt. of approx. 60,000 for the catalytic subunit and 130000-150000 for the cyclic AMP-binding activity. The purified enzyme displays a 20-fold greater preference for histone fractions 1 and 2b than for any non-histone substrate, including alpha-casein. Endogenous protein in the preparation is not appreciably phosphorylated. The unfractioned enzyme is stimulated significantly by cyclic GMP, cyclic IMP and dibutyryl cyclic AMP as well as by cyclic AMP. The catalytic reaction requires Mg2+ (Km 1.9mM) and ATP (Km 15.4 micron). Half-maximal activity of the enzyme is observed with histone 2b at 12micron and histone 1 at a higher substrate concentration. The pH optima are 6.1 and 6.5 with histones 2b and 1 respectively. This nuclear protein kinase appears to be distinct from other nuclear enzymes that have been reported, on the basis of histone specificity, univalent-salt-sensitivity, pH optima and nuclear location. However, the enzyme possesses many properties similar to those of the cytoplasmic kinases, including cyclic AMP-dependence, Mg2+ and ATP affinities and pH optima. It differs from cytoplasmic protein kinase type I, the major form in the liver, with respect to bivalent-cation effects and response to the heat-stable protein kinase inhibitor protein isolated from ox heart.

Based on their spectroscopic data (i.e., IR, UV, 1D/2D NMR, ECD, and HR-ESIMS) and/or comparing with those reported physicochemical data in related literature, the structures were determined to be (3R,5S,6S,95,10S,135)-3,6,13-trihydroxy-ent-abieta-8(14)-en-7-one (1), 3 alpha,15-dihydroxy-13 alpha-methoxy-ent-abieta-8(14)-en-7-one (2), p-coumaroyl-beta-phenethyl amine (3), narigenin trimethyl ether (4), and (3R,4-R,3'R,4'R)-6,6'-dimethoxy-3,4,3',4'-tetrahydro-2H,2H'[3,3]-bichromenyl-4,4'-diol (5). Among them, compound 1 is new, while compounds 3 similar to 5 were isolated from the Chloranthus genus for the first time.

Abstract:Cyclocarya paliurus (Batal) Iljinskaja is mainly used for harvesting leaves as materials for tea production and ingredients for the food industry. As its most important component, the contents of its total or specific flavonoids are supposed to vary at different ploidy levels. In the present study, two ploidy levels of C. paliurus are used to study their metabolome and transcriptome profiles. Though the total content of the flavonoids in leaves that were collected in September (the main harvesting season) presented insignificant differences between the two ploidies, flavonoid glucuronides were significantly accumulated in the tetraploid C. paliurus. Several structural genes related to the biosynthesis of these flavonoid glucuronides were expressed differentially, including PAL, 4CL, CHS, and CpUGTs. A weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) revealed that nine genes were highly correlated with the flavonoid glucuronide contents. Furthermore, 3 CpMYB39 and 3 CpUGT71 were highly associated with this accumulation of flavonoid glucuronides in tetraploid C. paliurus. These results can provide a new perspective on how different polyploid levels alter the quantitative and qualitative patterns of the secondary metabolite production in C. paliurus.
