Abstract:Changium smyrnioides Wolff, a monotypic species of family Umbellaceae, has a narrow distribution area and can found only in Yangtze River basin in China; the widespread Anthriscus sylvestris (L.) Hoffm can be found from temperate to subtropical zone in Asia, Europe and North America. Both species have fleshy roots, which are prized in Chinese medicine. Because of the land use, C. smyrnioides has now become an endangered species, while A. sylvestris do not endangered. Comparative studies on the ecological strategies based on the biological and ecological traits of the two species in present paper, aimed to find out the endangered mechanism of C. smyrnioides. Research was conducted at Hangzhou, Ningbo, Nanjing, Chuzhou and Anqing. The shoot of C. smyrnioides has only the basal leaf, which ensures it can capture light efficiently at ground level. The aboveground leaf area ratio (LAR_a) of C. smyrnioides was found to be higher than A. sylvestris, suggesting it can capture more light per unit of biomass. After spring time, C. smyrnioides loses its survival competitiveness as other herbaceous species can grow rapidly and impedes sunlight. C. smyrnioides is not a shade-tolerant species, that may explain why C. smyrnioides are typically found in small population under defoliated trees. Conversely, A. sylvestris can increase light absorption and out-compete other herbaceous by its distinct ability to expand densely and occupies extra horizontal and vertical space. In a word, C. smyrnioides is more effective in light capture and water acquisition than A. sylvestris, but the ecological strategy it with cause it specialized or overspecialized to the narrow environment, which were limited under the deciduous trees in subtropical evergreen broad-leaved forest zone in winter. As the human disturbance (digging for medicinal use and deforestation) becoming serious, C. smyrnioides becoming rare and an endangered plant.
Seed Dispersal and Seed Bank Dynamics of the Endangered Changium Smyrnioides

Abstract:Changium smyrnioides is an endangered species of Umbelliferae. Its cytology, pollen morphology, geological distribution, and genetic diversity have been studied, but the ecological characteristics of its seeds still remain unknown. To understand the mechanism of endangerment of C. smyrnioides, seed production and dispersal and the dynamics of its seed bank were investigated by random sampling methods. Seed production of C. smyrnioides is 132 seeds/individual, 86.4% of which are from the top inflorescence. The kilo grain weight of seeds is different between habitats. The scape (averaged 1.06 m in height) of C. smyrnioides often falls to the ground, so seeds fall far from their mother plant. The seed dispersal pattern is contagious. Compared with Anthriscus sylvestris, another species of Umbelliferae, seed production and seed bank density of C. smyrnioides in different periods is much less. Both seed banks are non persistent. C. smyrnioides maintain the seed bank by multi procreation, while A. sylvestris is maintained by clonal reproduction. C. smyrnioides has adopted a K strategy, with low seed number, large seed size and dispersion far from the mother plant so as to avoid density competition among the seedlings. Therefore, when it is disturbed by humans, by digging for medicinal use and deforestation, the population cannot recover quickly. A. sylvestris has adopted a r strategy, with high seed number, small seed size, dispersion near the mother plant, and production of ramets. Its population can recover quickly when it is disturbed by humans.

Abstract:The effect of soil moisture on gas exchange and growth of an endangered species, Changium smyrnioides, was compared with a non-endangered species, Anthriscus sylvestris. The two species belong to the same family Umbellaceae. With the decrease of soil moisture, the net photosynthetic rate (PN) and transpiration rate (E) decreased, while water use efficiency (WUE) increased, PN and WUE of C. smyrnioides were lower than those of A. sylvestris, whereas E was higher than that of A. sylvestris. The biomass, leaf mass ratio (LMR) and leaf area ratio (LAR) of C. smyrnioides were lower than those of A. sylvestris. Under drought, biomass. LMR and LAR of C. smyrnioides decreased more steeply than those of A. sylvestris, whereas specific root length (SRL) of C. smyrnioides was higher, compared to that of A. sylvestris. The present study indicated that C. smyrnioides accumulated less biomass, and directed more biomass to roots than A. sylvestris.

Abstract:With age adding, the area ratio of phloem and xylem decreases in Ch.smyrnioides . Differentiation of vascular cambium is active in 3～4 years root. The vascular bundle of stem is the type of double phloem. The anther is tetrasporangiate. Simultaneous cytokinesis in the microspore mother cell follows meriosis. The species is suspended placentation, anatropous ovule and nuclear endosporm. The embryo of Ch.smyrnioides is very small in mature seeds. They could successfully germination after 4 6 months of afterripening. The incoordination between the afterripening of seed and the raining season of East China may be one of the endangered reasons in Ch.smyrnioides .

Abstract:Changium smyrnioides and Anthriscus sylvestris have similar photosynthetic characters: their net photosynthetic rates, light saturation points and light compensation points in March are greater than in January; photosynthetic intensity of these two species is similar; and they can use the light resource both in winter and in early spring effectively but cannot take full advantage of light after spring. The specific leaf ration(SLA), leaf area ratio(LAR) and leaf mass ratio(LMR) of C.smyrnioides are lower than those of A.sylvestris, and the photosynthetic lasting time of C. smyrnioides is about 160 days shorter than that of A. sylvestris . Height, crown amplitude, length of main leaf and leaf number of both species grow speedily in March and April in early spring with nutritional organ flourishing, these four vegetal parameters of Changium smyrnioides are all lower than that of A. sylvestris . All these cause the total photosynthesis production of C. smyrnioidees very much lower than that of A. sylvestris, and accordingly result in lower biomass accumulation, lower growth rate, lower reproductive input and longer life history, suggesting that the population of C. smyrnioides cannot recover easily in short time in case it is disturbed.

Abstract:The endangered medicinal herb, Changium smyrnioides can only be found in deciduous forest gaps within the middle to northern subtropical broad-leaved evergreen forest zone of China. The considerable plasticity of its shoot and root structure helps it to capture light more effectively in winter and early spring, and to adapt to the soil moisture conditions in its narrow habitat. Another medicinal plant, Anthriscus sylvestris, is of similar economic importance but commonly distributed widely. In contrast to C. smyrnioides, it has low structural plasticity. It is also specialized to adapt to the moist and sunny environment, where habitat, such as the banks of creeks and rivers, is abundant.

Abstract:The resource, the population ecology, structure and characters of seeds, pollination biology and the relationship between plumpness of seeds and environment were investigated in the rare plant Changium smyrnioides . The genetic diversity and genetic structure of the species were analysed by morphological characters of seeds, starch gel electrophoresis and RAPD analysis. The studies revealed lack of coordination between the ripening of the seeds and the season of East China, which resulted in low ratio of seed germination and low rate of population renewal. As human activity has destroyed and disturbed suitable habitat for the species, the range of each population has decreased and the habitat has become fragmented which has decreased gene flow between populations ( Nm 1.0). The low gene flow suggests that genetic drift may play a prominent role in shaping the present day genetic composition. Based on these results, some management strategies are proposed for protecting this species effectively.
A Study on the Non-Destructive Model for Estimating Individual Age of an Endangered Plant Changium Smyrnioides

Abstract:In this paper, a non-destructive model estimating individual age of the endangered plant Changium smymioides Wolff is searched with the characteristics of shoot. First, making use of the relationship between root volume (Vt) and volume increment (AV), we build a model to deduce the age of individual. Second, the correlation between the maximum length of leaf (L) and root volume (Vt) is managed to estimate the age of individual (t). When we use this means in analyzing population age structure, it accords with the fact in the fields compatibly. In addition, based on this model we can assess the change point of development rate. This study is significant to plant ecophysiology arid population ecology, especially for the perennial endangered plants difficult to estimate age and not allow destructing at random.

Abstract:Hopea chinensis (Merr.) Hand.-Mazz. is a Class II national key protected plant and Plant Species with Extremely Small Populations in China. In order to further analyze why H. chinensis is endangered and optimize conservation techniques, we carried out a study on the effects of seed biological characteristics and environmental factors on the seed germination and seedling growth of H. chinensis. The results show that there were no significant differences in seed morphology between four populations in southern China, but there were significant differences in calyx lobe morphology and seed germination. The removal or retention of the calyx lobes or the seed coat had no significant effect on seed germination. The weight of individual H. chinensis seeds was mainly >1.0 g, with small seeds ( 2.0 g had the highest germination rate and fastest seedling growth. H. chinensis produces typical recalcitrant seeds, being sensitive to natural dehydration, with dehydration for 8 d reducing seed viability by 50%, whereas dehydration for 16 d resulted in seeds with zero viability. H. chinensis seeds are light-neutral and capable of germination at a temperature of 30 °C and on a substrate with good water retention and aeration. The seeds are not tolerant of drought, salinity, or flooding. In conclusion, the unique biological characteristics of H. chinensis seeds and the specific habitat which they inhabit contribute to a significant loss of viable seeds, which negatively affects the population's ability to regenerate and achieve maintenance.

Effect of Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Inoculation on Seedling Growth of Euryodendron Excelsum under Unsterilized Soil Conditions

Abstract:Euryodendron excelsum H.T.Chang is an endangered species from the family Theaceae endemic to China.It has been reduced to one remnant population with less than 200 individuals in Bajia region of Yangchun County, Guangdong Province.The species is listed as a Grade Two endangered plant for state protection in the Red Data Book of plants in China.A pot experiment was conducted toinvestigate the effect of indigenous Arbuscular Mycorrhizal(AM) inoculation on the seedling growth dynamics of E.excelsum under non-sterilized soil conditions.The individual height, survival rate, number of leaves and the content of photosynthetic pigments in the leaves were recorded.Moreover, the dynamic life table and survival curve of E.excelsum were also tabulated and analyzed.Results show that AM inoculation of E.excelsum seedling not only can increase the survival rate, but also may promote the height and leaves growth.Furthermore, the content of photosynthetic pigments in the leaves was increased after indigenous AMF inoculation, indicting the improvement of photosynthesis.The seedlings which inoculated AM have no obvious mortality during the first 48 weeks, while the survival curve of the control treatment belongs to Deevey-Ⅲ, suggesting a high mortality rate in the early seedling growth stage.It is concluded that AM inoculation can promote E.excelsum seedling's growth and increase its environmental fitness.The research results could provide a reference for the effective conservation and population recovery of this critically endangered species.
The Comparative Research on the Germination Rate and Seedling Growth of the Endangered Plants Prunus mongolica and Prunus pedunculata

Abstract:The seed germination and the seedling growth comparative experiments on two close kinships Prunus mongolica and Prunus pedunculata are carried out.The results indicate that under the same raise environment,P.mongolica's germination rate is bigger than P.pedunculata's,and P.mongolica seed's germination time is shorter than P.pedunculata's;P.mongolica's seedling growth,root depth and biomass are higher than P.pedunculata's.The variance analysis shows that the difference is significant or extremely significant.The differences of the related data in seedling germination rate and seedling growth speed show an environmental adaptation in their natural habitat.

Abstract:In order to know parasitic property of Cistanche deserticola,we studied dormancy and germination properties of Cistanche deserticola seeds.Embryo was observed through whole transparent law;seed vitalities were detected through TTC way;seed germination was induced through physical ways (such as water soaking,changed temperature,stratification)and chemical ways(such as hormone,strigol analogue——GR24,drawing liquid of Chinese herbal medicine、roots of Nitraria tangutorum and roots of Haloxylon ammodend).The results showed: seeds of Cistanche deserticola was smaller,the 1000-seed weight was only 0.096g,embryo of matured seeds developed incompletely,embryo lied in spherical embryo stage all the time before and after germination.Percentages of viable seeds were 25.3%.Germination rate of seeds was the highest when seeds were soaked in water for 30 days,cultured in GA_3 (0.5μg/ml)and 25℃ constant temperature condition,seed germination rate was up to 16.7%.Some of Chinese herbal medicine、drawing liquid of Nitraria tangutorum may stimulate seeds germination,but GR24、drawing liquid of Haloxylon ammodend roots had no action in seed germination.The results testified seeds of Cistanche deserticola had dormancy phenomenon,seeds germination induction need a certain stimulating signal from host roots except long period seedripening course.Dormancy and germination properties of Cistanche deserticola seeds were different from non-parasitic pants and other parasitic plant.

Furthermore, we assessed the effects of light, stratification, alternating temperature, and gibberellic acid 3 (GA(3)) on the dormancy release of these seeds. The embryo was well developed the endocarp was water-permeable, and no obvious mechanical hindrance to germination was observed. However, the endocarp and embryo contained phenols and other germination inhibitors. The seed extracts of C. migao delayed the germination of cabbage and ryegrass seeds, which indicates the presence of endogenous inhibitors. These findings suggest that C. migao seeds exhibit physiological dormancy. Light and an alternating temperature (15/20 degrees C) did not influence germination. However, GA(3) pretreatment, alternating temperatures, and warm stratification relieved dormancy. GA(3) pretreatment combined with the 15 degrees C stratification treatment was most effective in rapidly releasing the C. migao seed dormancy. Our findings may facilitate the storage and conservation of this endangered plant, which is currently underrepresented in ex situ collections.

Abstract:Wild Notopterygium incisum Ting ex H.T.Chang and N.forbesii Boiss.have been facing more and more serious over-exploitation under the pressure of population and economy development owing to wild resource exploitation,vegetation destruction,habitat fragmentation,and lands reclamation.The short growth phase and long growth cycle of those two species make this crisis more rigorous in plateau regions with high altitude and cold weather,and very low progenitive rate is the major obstacle to artificial domestication and cultivation.Characteristic of seed dormancy and breaking technique for rare and precious species of wild N.incisium were studied in both laboratory and fields.The results of morphological dissection,physiology and biochemical measurement of N.incisium seeds indicate the seed embryo had the property of after-ripening with the dormancy period of 8-10 month,the seed dormancy could be broken down only by embryo's after-ripening.The seed harvested in autumn with no-embryo or the embryo at original state had no germination capacity and after-ripening was necessary.The technology for dormancy breaking was found effective as follow:seeds flushed by flowing water could make the ABA content of seeds decreased to the level needed for seed germination;seeds treated with gibberellin(GA) or both GA and 6-benzyl adenine(BA) could accelerate the germination course and improve the germination rate.The temperature-changing stratification(15～25℃/2～5℃)could shorten the course of dormancy breaking;temperature-warming before stratification could accelerate the growth of embryo,low temperature was the necessary condition for seedling sprouting.The seed germination rate was increased to 19.8% through 2-3 months' warm-temperature and 2-3 months' low temperature stratification.
Effect of Soil Water Status on the Physioecological Traits and the Ecological Replacement of Two Endangered Species, Changium Smyrnioides and Chuanminshen Violaceum

Abstract:Both Changium smyrnioides Wolff and Chuanminshen violaceum Shen et Shan are monotypic species of the family Umbellaceae. They have narrow distribution areas and can only be found in the Yangtze River basin in China. Changium is distributed from the east to middle subtropical zone of China, and Chuanminshen from the middle to the west; they almost meet in the middle of the Yangtze basin. Because the climate varies from humid to semi-humid, an experiment was carried out to find out the two species' demand for soil water and analyze their niche separation by determining changes in their physio-ecological and structural traits in response to different soil water statuses. Results showed that the two species have similar structural characters and functional intensity. Diurnal variations, daily mean values, and relationships of irradiation and temperature to PN, E and WUE among the three treatments indicate that Chuanminshen has more tolerance to drought than Changium. Changes in morphological traits also suggest that Changium adapts to medium to wet soil conditions while Chuanminshen adapts to drought soil conditions. The differences in the adaptation of physiological and morphological traits to the water environment should be part of the reason these two species have become geographically vicarious species. The results indicate that, at least, the mechanism and the approach to conservation for the two species are similar.

Abstract:Euryodendron excelsum H. T. Chang is a critically endangered plant from the family Theaceae that is endemic to China. It is now present in only one remnant population in a very narrow range and with a highly isolated and fragmented distribution pattern. The species is distributed close to the local villages and faces extinction because of the high level of anthropogenic disturbance. Thus, conservation and restoration of this species is urgent. The species reproduces by seed, but its germination requirements and seedling emergence are rarely understood. In this study, the germination requirements, desiccation tolerance and seedling emergence of the species were studied under controlled laboratory conditions. The results indicated that seeds of E. excelsum were non-dormant. Optimal temperatures for germination were 15 degrees C to 25 degrees C; the germination percentage decreased and the mean germination time increased at high temperature. Seed germination was inhibited in the dark, suggesting that the seeds were positive photoblastic. Water stress also significantly inhibited germination percentage; no seeds germinated at 15% polyethylene glycol 6000. The fresh seeds had moderate moisture content of 28.6% and showed strong tolerance of dehydration. Thus, the seeds of E. excelsum tended to be orthodox. Seeds on the soil surface had the highest emergence percentage, which declined with depth of burial. Soil types significantly affected seedling emergence; seeds had higher emergence percentage in sandy soil than in mixed soil and clayed soil. Our study demonstrated that ex situ conservation and reintroduction of E. excelsum using seedling propagation from seeds is feasible.

Abstract:Seed germination characteristics of 7 spatially isolated populations of the endangered plant Euonymus chloranthoides were studied in the laboratory condition.The differences of the seed germination rates among 7 populations were found to be extremely notable.The seed germination rates of the studied populations are positively correlated with their population sizes,while show no correlation with the soil parameters.The differences of the seed germination rates between big populations and small populations reach the extremely notable level.The average seed mass of 7 populations are not copiously correlated both with their population size and with soil parameters in the habitats,which indicates that the average seed weight of a studied population is relatively stable and less influenced.The low seed germination rate in smaller populations may mainly due to the inbreeding depression,and/or loss of genetic diversity in the isolated,smaller populations,while not due to the environmental factors.The study suggests that we should take both the non-genetic,demographic factors and the genetic factors into consideration and enlarge the population to maintain higher seed germination rate and restore the normal regenerations among the smaller and isolated populations of this endangered plant.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To investigate the species resources of Changium smyrnioides. METHOD:Nine habitat populations of C. smyrnioides, included with population environment, time limit, morphological characters and so on were investigated. The phylogenetic relationship of different habitat populations of C. smyrnioides was studied by isoenzyme electrophoretic analysis of the EST. RESULT:The results showed that wild resources of C. smyrnioides were endangered. Seed germinating rate of cultivated plant was significantly higher than that of wild seed, but polysaccharide content in the root of wild species was significantly higher than that of cultivated plant. There existed a geographic phylogenetic relationship among different habitat populations. CONCLUSION:The wild C. smyrnioides resources are endangered. The wild C. smyrnioides around Nanjing city are better than the others, it could be used for the further selecting of species resources.

Abstract:The seed germination characteristics of Shan dong endemic plant Geranium tsingtauense were studied with different treatments in this paper.The results showed that the seeds are oblate,the weight per thousand granule was 6.759 g;Moisture content was 16.9%;the hard seed rate reaches to 95.6%;The water absorption rate of untreated seeds was significantly lower than that of treated for 5 min.The hard seeds of G.tsingtauense could be broken down by H2SO4,the most appropriate time were 9 min,the germination rate were 79.67%;The germiation rate pre-treated by hot water(60 ℃) was 72.67%.The optimum germination temperature of the seeds was 20-25 ℃.
