Abstract:Cotton was planted on April 20(regular seeding date) and June 15(late seeding date). The bolls on the first and second fruiting nodes of its first four fruiting shoots as well as the leaves on the contrapuntal nodes of the two fruiting notes were daubed with the exogenous and physiologically active mixtures consisting of 6% sucrose and 0.6% glutamine(C+N),2% sucrose and 0.2% glutamine(1/3 C+1/3 N),12% sucrose and 1.2% glutamine(2 C+2 N) and having the same C/N ratio 15 days and 30 days after their flowers opened. The average daily temperature during the fifty-day period and the fiber-thickening period of boll development were statistically 28.5℃ and 28.1℃ with the regular seeding date, and 22.9℃ and 21.4℃ with the later seeding date, respectively(surpassing their critical temperatures). The results demonstrated that the daubing with(C+N) 15 days after the flowers opened and the daubing with(2C+2N) 30 days after the flowers opened could enhance the transports of nitrogen and soluble sugar and increase the weights of the bolls by as high as 0.40 g and 0.58 g,respectively. All the three exogenous physiologically active mixtures could increase the accumulative cellulose amounts and help to optimize the spiral and orientation angles(φ and ψ) and increase the specific fiber strengths 30 days after the flowers opened;of them, the daubing with(2C+2N) presented the highest increase in specific fiber strength which amount to as high as 1.45 cN/tex.The daubing with(1/3 C+1/3 N) 15 days after the flowers opened was the most favorable so as to increase the specific fiber strengths by as high as 2.10 cN/tex.
