Abstract:The rodent flora was investigated in Tianzhu county, Gansu province. The results showed that there were 25 species, which belonged to 4 sub-families, eight families, two orders. Cricetidae and Dchotonidae were the dominant types, and Myosplax bailey was dominant species. Seven rodent communities were classified by different habitats. The area being harmed was 152.9 thousand hm2, accounting for 39.06％ of total grassland, which frequently occurred in alpine meadow and shrub meadow

Abstract:Begonia pseudoedulis, a new species in Begonia sect. Platycentrum (Klotzsch) A.DC. (Begoniaceae) from southern Guangxi of China, is here described and illustrated. It morphologically resembles B. edulis H.Lév. and B. dielsiana E.Pritz. ex Diels but differs easily by its hairy petioles and inflorescences, and red hispidulous flower tepals, ovary and capsules. The molecular phylogenetic analysis based on ITS supported that the new species was a monophyletic lineage, separating from both B. dielsiana and B. edulis. Due to its isolated distribution with several small populations, which are possibly disturbed by human activities, the species is considered as “Near Threatened” (NT) according to the IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria.

Abstract:The Qinling Mountains in East Asia serve as the geographical boundary between the north and south of China and are also indicative of climatic differences, resulting in rich ecological and species diversity. However, few studies have focused on the responses of plants to geological and climatic changes in the Qinling Mountains and adjacent regions. Therefore, we investigated the evolutionary origins and phylogenetic relationships of three Pedicularis species in there to provide molecular evidence for the origin and evolution of plant species. Ecological niche modeling was used to predict the geographic distributions of three Pedicularis species during the last interglacial period, the last glacial maximum period, and current and future periods, respectively. Furthermore, the distribution patterns of climate fluctuations and the niche dynamics framework were used to assess the equivalence or difference of niches among three Pedicularis species. The results revealed that the divergence of three Pedicularis species took place in the Miocene and Holocene periods, which was significantly associated with the large-scale uplifts of the Qinling Mountains and adjacent regions. In addition, the geographic distributions of three Pedicularis species have undergone a northward migration from the past to the future. The most important environmental variables affecting the geographic distributions of species were the mean diurnal range and annual mean temperature range. The niche divergence analysis suggested that the three Pedicularis species have similar ecological niches. Among them, P. giraldiana showed the highest niche breadth, covering nearly all of the climatic niche spaces of P. dissecta and P. bicolor. In summary, this study provides novel insights into the divergence and origins of three Pedicularis species and their responses to climate and geological changes in the Qinling Mountains and adjacent regions. The findings have also provided new perspectives for the conservation and management of Pedicularis species.

Abstract:Morphological approaches often fail to delimit species in recently derived species complexes. This can be exacerbated in historical collections which may have lost key features in specimen preparation and preservation. Here, we examine the Pedicularis siphonantha complex, endemic to the Mountains of Southwest China. This complex is characterized by its red/purple/pink and long-tubular corolla, and twisted, beaked galea. However, herbarium specimens are often difficult to identify to species. Molecular approaches using nrITS or nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer (nrITS) + plastid DNA (ptDNA) have been successfully used for species identification in Pedicularis . To resolve taxonomic confusion in the Pedicularis siphonantha complex, we reconstructed phylogenies of the complex using nrITS and four plastid DNA loci ( matK , rbcL , trnH-psbA , and trnL-F ). To recover as much of the phylogenetic history as possible, we sampled individuals at the population level. Topological incongruence between the nrITS and ptDNA datasets was recovered in clades including two widely distributed species, Pedicularis milliana and Pedicularis tenuituba . Based on morphological, geographical, and genetic evidence, we suggest that hybridization/introgression has occurred between P. milliana and Pedicularis sigmoidea / Pedicularis sp. 1 in the Yulong Snow Mountain of Lijiang, northwest Yunnan, and between P. tenuituba and Pedicularis leptosiphon in Ninglang, northwest Yunnan. After removing conflicting DNA regions in Pedicularis dolichosiphon (nrITS) and P. milliana (ptDNA), the concatenated nrITS and ptDNA phylogenies distinguish 11 species in the P. siphonantha complex, including two undescribed species, from the Jiaozi and Yulong Snow Mountains, respectively. Phylogeographical analyses indicate that the P. siponantha complex originated from south of the Hengduan Mountains, expanding north to the Himalayas and the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau. Moreover, the uplift of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and climate oscillations may have driven further diversification in the complex.

Abstract:The complete cp genomes of Pedicularis chinensis (GenBank accession number: OQ587614) and Pedicularis kansuensis (GenBank accession number: OQ587613) were sequenced, assembled, and annotated. Their chloroplast (cp) genome lengths were 146,452 bp, and 146,852 bp, respectively; 120 and 116 genes were identified, comprising 75 and 72 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 37 and 36 transfer RNA (tRNA) genes, and 8 and 8 ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes, for P. chinensis and P. kansuensis , respectively. A simple sequence repeat (SSR) analysis revealed that the repetitive sequences were mainly composed of mononucleotide repeats (A/T motif) and dinucleotide repeats (AT/TA motif). Comparative genomics identified several variant genes ( rpl22 , rps19 , rpl12 , ycf1 , trnH , psbA , and ndhH ) and variant regions ( trnS - GGA , trnV - UAC , ndhJ - trnV , ycf4 - cemA , ndhE - nhdG , and rpl32 - trnL ) with a high Pi, indicating the potential to serve as deoxyribo nucleic acid (DNA) barcodes for Pedicularis species identification. The results show that the cp genomes of P. chinensis and P. kansuensis were the same as those of other plants in Pedicularis , with different degrees of AT preference for codons. Large differences in the number of SSRs and the expansion of the inverted repeat (IR) region showed strong variability and interspecific differentiation between these two species and other species represented in the genus Pedicularis . A phylogenetic analysis showed that P. kansuensis had the closest relationship with P. oliveriana , and P. chinensis had the closest relationship with P. aschistorhyncha . These results will facilitate the study of the phylogenetic classification and interspecific evolution of Pedicularis plants.

Abstract:Pedicularis verticillata L. is a highly valuable herb for traditional Chinese medical treatment. In this report, 11 microsatellite loci from P. verticillata were isolated. The simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers were screened in 23 samples of wild populations of P. verticillata, and eight samples from its sister P. ikomai. The number of alleles ranged from 4 to 13, and value of expected (H E) and observed (H 0) heterozygosity was 0.62609–0.89662 and 0–0.95652, respectively. All loci were significantly deviated from Hardy–Weinberg expectations due to the heterozygote deficiency, indicating a dramatic loss of genetic polymorphisms in the restrictedly distributed species. The markers amplified well in the two species are useful for examining genetic diversity and population genetic structure, which, in turn, can provide information for establishing conservation strategy for these endangered species.

Abstract:Sixteen species belonging to 5 genera,3 families of the lichen order Peltigerales,viz. Leptogium asiaticum and L. burnetii new to Northern China,Collema coccophorum new to Northwest China,Coccocarpia erythroxyli,Collema tenax var. corallinum,C. subconveniens,C. subflaccidum,Leptogium menziesii,L. saturninum,Peltigera canina,P. elisabethae,P. polydactylon,P. praetextata,P. rufescens,Solorina bispora and S. saccata new to Ningxia were collected in various habitats of Mt. Liupan. Peltigeralean lichens are generally rare in Mt. Liupan and show a preference for shady and humid habitats.

Abstract:The c. 270 endemic species of Pedicularis in the Himalaya–Hengduan Mountains (HHM) region exhibit high diversity in geographic distribution, elevational range and floral morphology. Many of these, including the species with the longest corolla tubes and beaked galeas, are monophyletic and represent a putative in situ radiation. In this study, we focus on the representative Clade 3 within the HHM region. We integrate the plastid phylogeny of this clade with environmental data and species distributions to infer environmental correlates of species diversity. We estimate macroevolutionary rates and reconstructed ancestral states for geographic ranges and corolla traits, and analyse patterns of range overlap and niche evolution to assess drivers of diversification in the HHM region. Our results show that the region from northwest Yunnan to southwest Sichuan is the centre of diversity for this clade of Pedicularis. Rates of diversification are associated with precipitation and multiple environmental factors. Multiple range expansions from the Sanjiang (Three Parallel Rivers) region, followed by allopatric speciation across the HHM region, contributed to early rapid diversification. Corolla traits are not significantly associated with species diversification. This study highlights the importance of integrated evidence for understanding species diversification dynamics and contributes to our understanding of the origins of the remarkable richness of plant species in the HHM region.

Abstract:The new species Pedicularis revealiana, is described from Katao in Sikkim Himalaya, India. The new species is hemiparasitic and possesses a combination of characters which makes it unique among all Pedicularis species as it has a perennial caespitose habit, stout and woody stems with decumbent branches and congested internodes, evanescent radical leaves and smaller and fewer cauline leaves with linear pinnae, 3–5 flowered and subcapitate or fascicled inflorescence, pedicillate bracts, minute flowers, hairy calyx with crestate‐dentate and recurved lobes, stipitate and arcuate galea with truncate apex and papillose surface, gland‐dotted labium with very large lateral lobes, unequal filament pairs inserted near top of the corolla tube, stipitate stigma which is bilobed and woolly and monocolpate pollen grains which are large and fusiform in shape with rugulose‐punctate surface. With these combination of characters, it is differentiated from the only allied species Pedicularis gracilis.

Abstract:Ganoderma is a globally distributed genus that encompasses species with forestry ecological, medicinal, economic, and cultural importance. Despite the importance of this fungus, the studies on the species diversity of Ganoderma in Yunnan Province, China (YPC) have poorly been carried out. During this study, opportunistic sampling was used to collect 21 specimens of Ganoderma from YPC. Morphology and multigene phylogeny of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions, the large subunit of nuclear ribosomal RNA gene (nrLSU), the translation elongation factor 1-α gene (TEF1-α), and the second largest subunit of RNA polymerase II (RPB2) were used to identify them. Morphological and molecular characterization of the 21 specimens showed that they belong to 18 species of Ganoderma , of which three are novel viz. G. artocarpicola , G. obscuratum and G. yunnanense . Ganoderma artocarpicola is characterized by the sessile and concrescent basidiomata, reddish brown to yellowish brown pileus surface, heterogeneous context, wavy margin, and ovoid basidiospores. Ganoderma obscuratum is distinguished by small pores (6–9 per mm), dorsolaterally sub-stipitate basidiomata which become greyish-brown when dry, and narrow ellipsoid basidiospores. Ganoderma yunnanense is characterized by cream color pore surface and context, centrally to laterally stipitate basidiomata with reddish-brown to violet-brown strongly laccate pileus surface, and broadly ellipsoid basidiospores. With the help of an extensive literature survey and the results of this study, a checklist of 32 Ganoderma species from YPC was established, which accounts for 71.11% of the known species in China. In addition, a key to the Ganoderma in YPC is also provided.

Abstract:Clematis brevipes (Ranunculaceae), described from southern Gansu province, China, is an interesting and yet imperfectly understood species, with some of its important morphological characters, detailed geographical distribution and habitat information unknown or inconsistently recorded. Based on careful observations of both herbarium specimens (including type material) and living plants in the wild, here we determine the number of leaflets and color of flowers of this species and its geographical distribution. The habitat information is also given for this species for the first time. Furthermore, we discuss aspects of typification of C. brevipes and the affinity of the species with its close allies.

Abstract:The species of Gymnopilus (Hymenogastraceae, Agricales) are commonly recognized as wood-decaying fungi. Certain members of this genus have been identified as psilocybin-producing mushrooms. Gymnopilus exhibits a diverse range and has a global distribution. In this study, a total of seventy-eight specimens were gathered from ten provinces in China. A comprehensive molecular phylogenetic analysis was conducted, employing gene sequences including ITS, nrLSU, nrSSU, rpb1, rpb2, and tef1-α. Additionally, morphological examinations were also carried out. The phylogenetic topology of Gymnopilus from this study generally agreed with previous studies and facilitated the identification of all those specimens. As a result, eleven species, including five newly discovered ones named Gy. gyirongensis, Gy. variisporus, Gy. tomentosiceps, Gy. tenuibasidialis, and Gy. aurantipileatus, were recognized. Significantly, four of the five newly identified species are native to the Xizang Autonomous Region, emphasizing their specialization in this distinctive habitat. This research contributes to our comprehension of Gymnopilus diversity and lays the groundwork for the conservation and sustainable utilization of Gymnopilus resources.

Abstract:We present a list of nomenclatural types of 20 Pedicularis names at the specific or infraspecific rank present in the Pyrenees and/or the Iberian Peninsula. None of them has been explicitly typified to date. We studied materials from about twenty European herbaria, enabling us to locate and document the holotypes of seven of the names, as well as designate the lectotypes for 12 (a drawing in the case of Pedicularis lusitanica ), a neotype for P. kerneri and an epitype for P. lusitanica . Other syntypes, isolectotypes and isoepitypes that could be located are also recorded in the list. Regarding the geographical origin, seven of the types were collected from the Pyrenees, such as those of the widespread P. pyrenaica and P. mixta , 10 from the rest of the Iberian Peninsula (three in Portugal and three in the Cantabrian range), and two from the Alps (those of P. allionii and P. kerneri , both also present in the Pyrenees). Finally, for the Cantabrian endemic plant first described as P. pyrenaica var. fallax , we propose the replacement name P. picoeuropeana .

Abstract:According to the Species Catalogue of China, Tibet, China, has more than 1,000 species of bryophytes, showing its remarkably high biodiversity. Amongst them, the Polytrichaceae is one of the largest family, with six genera and 25 species, one subspecies and two varieties reported previously.Based on a field survey and specimen identification, the following species have been newly recorded in the bryoflora of Tibet, namely Oligotrichum obtusatum Broth., Pogonatum contortum (Menzies ex Brid.) Abstract:We report the complete chloroplast genome (plastome) sequences of Pedicularis cephalantha (147,087 bp) and P. nigra (145,726 bp), endemic to southwestern China. Both plastomes have typical quadripartite structures with one large-single copy region, one small-single copy region, and two inverted repeat regions. Both plastome sequences contained 37 tRNA genes and eight rRNA genes, but they differed in the numbers of protein-coding genes: P. cephalantha had 76 functional genes and 12 pseudogenes while P. nigra had 74 functional genes and 13 pseudogenes. Phylogenetic analysis shows that P. cephalantha and P. nigra are closely related, then sister to P. oederi in the family Orobanchaceae.
