Abstract:Effects of different Azadirachtin concentrations on Liriomyza trifolii(Burgess)survival and oviposition were studied. The results showed that azadirachtin concentration had no significant affect on egg hatch. But it could induce high larval and pupa mortality. Its lethal effect on pupa was greater than on larval. It had remarkable oviposition repellency on Liriomyza trifolii(Burgess)adult.

Abstract:Pesticide applications in olive orchards could alter the biological control of parasitoid Psyttalia concolor Szépligeti (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) on the key pest Bactrocera oleae Rossi (Diptera: Tephritidae). Psyttalia concolor adults can be contaminated by exposure to spray droplets, contact with treated surfaces or oral uptake from contaminated food sources. Pesticides impact both pest and parasitoid populations when they coexist in time and space, as they reduce pest numbers available for parasitoids and might cause toxic effects to parasitoids from which they need to recover. Therefore, the appropriate timing and application of selective chemical treatments provides the opportunity to incorporate this parasitoid in the IPM of B. oleae. This manuscript reviews the current literature on lethal and sublethal effects of insecticides, fungicides, herbicides, and biopesticides on P. concolor. Insecticides were generally more toxic, particularly organophosphates and pyrethroids, while herbicides and biopesticides had less effects on mortality and reproductive parameters. Some fungicides were quite harmful. Most of the studies were conducted in laboratory conditions, focused on reproduction as the only sublethal effect, exclusively considered the effect of a single pesticide and persistence was hardly explored. Field studies, currently quite scarce, are absolutely needed to satisfactorily assess the impact of pesticides on P. concolor.

Abstract:The effect of pesticides on insects is often discussed in terms of acute and chronic toxicity, but an important and often overlooked aspect is the impact of sublethal doses on insect physiology and behavior. Pesticides can influence various physiological parameters of insects, including the innate immune system, development, and reproduction, through a combination of direct effects on specific exposed tissues and the modification of behaviors that contribute to health and reproductive success. Such behaviors include mobility, feeding, oviposition, navigation, and the ability to detect pheromones. Pesticides also have a profound effect on insect learning and memory. The precise effects depend on many different factors, including the insect species, age, sex, caste, physiological condition, as well as the type and concentration of the active ingredients and the exposure route. More studies are needed to assess the effects of different active ingredients (and combinations thereof) on a wider range of species to understand how sublethal doses of pesticides can contribute to insect decline. This review reflects our current knowledge about sublethal effects of pesticides on insects and advancements in the development of innovative methods to detect them.

Review on effects of some insecticides on honey bee health

Abstract:Insecticides, one of the main agrochemicals, are useful for controlling pests; however, the indiscriminate use of insecticides has led to negative effects on nontarget insects, especially honey bees, which are essential for pollination services. Different classes of insecticides, such as neonicotinoids, pyrethroids, chlorantraniliprole, spinosad, flupyradifurone and sulfoxaflor, not only negatively affect honey bee growth and development but also decrease their foraging activity and pollination services by influencing their olfactory sensation, memory, navigation back to the nest, flight ability, and dance circuits. Honey bees resist the harmful effects of insecticides by coordinating the expression of genes related to immunity, metabolism, and detoxification pathways. To our knowledge, more research has been conducted on the effects of neonicotinoids on honey bee health than those of other insecticides. In this review, we summarize the current knowledge regarding the effects of some insecticides, especially neonicotinoids, on honey bee health. Possible strategies to increase the positive impacts of insecticides on agriculture and reduce their negative effects on honey bees are also discussed.
Lethal and Sublethal Effects of Spinosad on the Parasitoid Cotesia plutellae

Abstract:Test cohorts of the parasitoid Cotesia plutellae (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) were reared on a strain of the host, Plutella xylostella, with a high level of resistance to the insecticide spinosad. To (observe) the lethal and sublethal effects of the insecticide on various stages of C. plutellae, cohorts of the parasitoid were treated with 25 mg/L spinosad (the recommended rate for field application) at the egg or larval stage by applying the insecticide to the host larvae, or at the pupal stage by direct (application.) In addition, the toxicity of the insecticide on adult wasps was bioassayed. Compared to the controls, when the parasitoids were exposed to spinosad at the egg or larval stage via their host larvae, they suffered (mortality) within the hosts or in the process of egression out of the hosts, resulting in reduction in cocoon formation and pupation by 43%~56%, adult emergence by 19%~33% and adult female ratio by 11%~25%, while adult body size, longevity and ability of parasitism were unaffected; when the parasitoids were exposed to spinosad at the pupal stage, adult emergence was reduced by 10% and adult longevity was decreased, while ability of parasitism of the adult females was unaffected; and the LC_(99) for adults at 24 h tested by residue contact was (4.31 mg/L.) These (results) demonstrate that spinosad can exert toxicity on the parasitoid eggs and larvae following entry to the host larvae, or exert toxicity directly on the (parasitoid) pupae and adults, thereby cause lethal and sublethal effects on all stages of the parasitoid, with the highest acute toxicity to the adult stage.
Effect of insecticides and Plutella xylostella (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae) genotype on a predator and parasitoid and implications for the evolution of insecticide resistance

Abstract:In the laboratory and in cages in the greenhouse, we evaluated the toxicity of two insecticides (lambda-cyhalothrin and spinosad) on the parasitoid, Diadegma insulare (Cresson), and the predator, Coleomegilla maculate (DeGeer), both natural enemies of the diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (L.). Lambda-cyhalothrin was very toxic to both natural enemies. Spinosad was less toxic to C. maculata adults and larvae, and slightly toxic to D. insulare. Both natural enemies suppressed P. xylostella populations in cages with 80% spinosad-treated and 20% nontreated plants; such suppression was not seen when lambda-cyhalothrin was used. Using broccoli, Brassica oleracea L. variety italica, a common host for P. xylostella, we also studied direct and indirect effects of both natural enemies in the presence and absence of the two insecticides and to different P. xylostella genotypes: resistant to the insecticide, susceptible, or heterozygous. Neither natural enemy could distinguish host genotype if P. xylostella were feeding on nontreated plants. They could also not distinguish between larvae feeding on spinosad-treated plants and nontreated plants, but D. insulare could distinguish between larvae feeding on lambda-cyhalothrin treated and nontreated plants. Our studies suggest that lambda-cyhalothrin has direct toxicity to these two natural enemies, can affect their host foraging and acceptance of P. xylostella and consequently would not be compatible in conserving these natural enemies in a program for suppression of P. xylostella. In contrast, our studies suggest that treatment with spinosad has much less effect on these natural enemies and would allow them to help suppress populations of P. xylostella. These findings are discussed in relation to the evolution of insecticide resistance and suppression of the pest populations.
Effects of Host Insecticide Resistance on Parasitism Capacity of Cotesia Plutellae

Abstract:Effects of insecticide resistance of Plutella xylostella on parasitism capacity of Cotesia plutellae were studied in the presence of fenvalerate under laboratory conditions. In the condition where the insecticide was applied, parasitism of a resistant strain (RRP) of P. xylostella by a strain (RRC) of C. plutellae reared from the resistant host strain reached 89% and survival of the exposed host larvae reached 95%, significantly higher than when RRC was provided with host larvae of a susceptible strain (SSP) of P. xylostellae or when a strain (SSC) of C. plutellae reared from SSP was provided with SSP larvae. These results indicated that resistant host larvae survived better the insecticide application than susceptible ones and thus provided more hosts for the parasitoid in favour of the population increase of the latter. Statistical analysis by ANOVA showed that host strains and the interactions between strains of P. xylostella and C. plutellae had significant effects on parasitism and death rate of P. xylostella larvae, indicating that insecticide resistance of P. xylostella had changed its suitability to C. plutellae.

Abstract:The effects of transgenic Bt cotton on the parasitoid in tri-trophic system involving Sukang 310, Sylepta derogata and Apanteles ruficrus have been investigated. The negative effects of Bt cotton (Sukang 310) on the development of parasitoid ( Apanteles ruficrus ) were found in the fields. The population of Apanteles ruficrus descended significantly. The parasite ratio in the experiment is lower than that of the control.

Abstract:Fipronil is widely used in the agricultural world as an efficient phenylpyrazole insecticide to control pests. Binodoxys communis is a key parasitic natural enemy of major homopteran pests and can successfully control the population of pests such as cotton aphids. It has not yet been studied what effects would sublethal doses of fipronil have on Binodoxys communis larvae. Here, this study evaluated the effect of fipronil on Binodoxys communis larvae and analyze the transcriptome results. The results showed that LC 10 (1.19 mg/L) and LC 25 (1.73 mg/L) had significant negative effects on the survival rate and parasitism rate of F 0 generation. Moreover, exposure to high concentrations (LC 25 ) of fipronil still had obvious passive effect on the F 1 generation of Binodoxys communis . These results indicated that sublethal doses of fipronil have malignant effects on the biological functions of parasitoids and their offspring. The results of transcriptome analysis showed that differentially expressed genes (DEGs) of Binodoxys communis after LC 10 treatment are mainly related to immunity and detoxification. LC 25 treatment instead resulted in changes in the expression of genes related to nutrition, energy and metabolism reactions. Seven of the identified DEGs were selected for real-time fluorescence quantitative PCR analysis. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report to evaluate the sublethal, intergenerational, and transcriptomic side effects of fipronil on larvae of parasitic natural pest enemies. Our findings provide data to accurately assess the risk of fipronil usage on Binodoxys communis larvae, and provide important theoretical support for the comprehensive prevention and control of natural enemies and pesticides.

Effects of insecticides commonly used in vegetable fields on survival and ovarian development of parasitoid, Pteromalus puparum

Abstract:Influences of 10 insecticides at commercially recommended dosage on survival of Pteromalus puparum female adults, as well as 4 of them on the ovarian development of surviving adults, were evaluated in laboratory using dry film bioassay. Based upon the mortality of treated adults, phoxim and chlorpyrifos were considered as the most toxic insecticides for female adults of the parasitoid, followed by deltamethrin, chlorfenapyr and bisultap, and fenvalerate as the insecticide of far less toxicity than the formers; abamectin, abamectin-BT, methomyl and chlorfluazuron were fairly safe to this parasitoid. Ovarian development of surviving adults was repressed considerably by methomyl, but evidently less by abamectin, abamectin-BT and chlorfluazuron. In terms of enhancing control efficacy of P. puparum, abamectin, abamectin-BT and chlorfluazuron are recommended as insecticides of first priority for chemical control of Pieris rapae.
Evolution of insecticide resistance via parallel amino acid substitutions in insect pests and their parasitoid wasps

Abstract:Insecticides have become the primary selective force in many insect species; however, whether beneficial insects developed resistance remains unknown. We analyzed the sequences of hymenopteran GABAA receptor subunit gene Rdl ( resistance to dieldrin ), which encodes the target of cyclodiene and phenylpyrazole insecticides. The resistance-conferring A2 S mutations were found in seven parasitoid wasps and similar amino acid replacements at homologous sites have been identified in four of their resistant hosts. Our findings indicate how parallel molecular evolution at a single amino acid site confers adaptation in both insects and their natural enemies, which may shape species interactions and community structure. ### Competing Interest Statement The authors have declared no competing interest.

Abstract:Trichogramma chilonis (Ishii) is an important egg parasitoid, widely used as biological control agent of lepidopteran pests. To understand the risks associated with specific insecticide use towards the parasitoid, we studied the effect of 10 insecticides sprayed at recommended field dosages (RFD) on factitious host, Corcyra cephalonica eggs with parasitoid in different development stages, egg (one-day after parasitism), larval (3-days after parasitism), pre-pupal (5-days after parasitism) and pupal (7-days after parasitism). The emerging F1 adults were further evaluated for parasitic efficiency and reduction in adult emergence of F2 generation. All the tested insecticides significantly reduced the parasitism of surviving T. chilonis female wasps with varying rates (15.2 to 43.9%). Against pre-imaginal stages, insecticides were comparatively more harmful to the egg and larval stages of parasitoid as compared to pre-pupal and pupal stages. Compared to control values, the parasitism rate of T. chilonis adults and emergence of F2 adults were also significantly reduced in all the tested insecticides. Chlorantraniliprole, methoxyfenozide and flubendiamide were quite safer to all the developmental stages of the parasitoid, while chlorpyriphos was found to be highly toxic according to the classification given by International Organization for Biological Control (IOBC). Further studies need to be carried out to verify the effect of these insecticides on T. chilonis under semi-field and field conditions.

Abstract:Sublethal effect considered as an emerging factor to assess the environmental risk of insecticides, which can impact the insects on both physiology and behavior. Lethal exposure can be causing near immediate mortality. Pests are inevitably exposed to sublethal and lethal dose in the agroecosystem following application of pesticides. Insecticides, widely used for the control of insect pests, are irreplaceable in insect pest management. The effects of imidacloprid by the method of high-throughput non-targeted metabolomics was investigated in Aphis gossypii Glover exposed to LC10 and LC90 doses of the imidacloprid, and the control group was treated with the same condition without imidacloprid. Pairwise comparisons showed that 111 metabolites changed significantly, 60 in the LC10 group, and 66 in the LC90 group compared to the control group, while only 16 changes in the LC10 were same with that in LC90 group. Among the changed metabolites, a total of 16 metabolites were identified as potential biomarkers, which represented the most influential pathways including glycolysis and gluconeogenesis, alanine, aspartate, and glutamate metabolism, ascorbate and aldarate metabolism, glutathione metabolism, phenylalanine metabolism, tyrosine metabolism, caffeine metabolism and parkinson's disease (PD), which could account for the sublethal and lethal effects on A. gossypii. These modified metabolic pathways demonstrated that high energy consumption, excitotoxicity and oxidative stress (OS) were appeared in both LC10 and LC90 groups, while PD was detected only in the LC90 group. The results of non-targeted metabolomics revealed the effects of neonicotinoid pesticide exposure on A. gossypii successfully, and provided a deep insight into the influenced physiology by the stress of neonicotinoid pesticide in the insect.
The sublethal impacts of five insecticidal formulations on Oryzaephilus surinamensis behavioral traits

Abstract:Background: Mortality caused by various pyrethroids, and neonicotinoids has been studied for stored-product insects in the past, yet limited information exists on the sublethal effects they can induce to Oryzaephilus surinamensis. In the current study, the sublethal effects of deltamethrin, λ-cyhalothrin, α-cypermethrin, etofenprox, and the mixture of acetamiprid with d-tetramethrin and piperonyl butoxide on the mobility of O. surinamensis in the presence or the absence of a food source was investigated. Results: Lethal concentrations (LCs) were lower for deltamethrin, α-cypermethrin, and λ-cyhalothrin (LC10 = 0.000233, 0.000211, and 0.000271 mg active ingredient (a.i.) cm-2, LC30 = 0.000413, 0.000398, and 0.000447 mg a.i. cm-2, respectively), followed by etofenprox, and the mixture of acetamiprid with d-tetramethrin and piperonyl butoxide (LC10 = 0.00228 and 0.003267 mg a.i. cm-2, LC30 = 0.00437 and 0.01188 mg a.i. cm-2, respectively). Deltamethrin and λ-cyhalothrin negatively impacted adult walking behavior, increasing stop durations compared to controls. Adults exposed to LC10 and LC30 of λ-cyhalothrin, and LC30 of deltamethrin exhibited prolonged periods on their backs compared to the remaining treatments and the controls. The α-cypermethrin LC30-exposed adults exhibited significantly shorter walking and stopping durations than controls but demonstrated prolonged climbing on the arena walls compared to adults exposed to the remaining a.i. and the control. A similar trend was observed for etofenprox. Conclusions: Under sublethal concentrations, λ-cyhalothrin and deltamethrin increased stop intervals and reduced the duration of climbing attempts of O. surinamensis versus α-cypermethrin. These findings advance comprehension of the underexplored sublethal impacts of the tested a.i. on O. surinamensis adults, holding potential for leveraging insecticide-induced behavioral effects to enhance warehouse pest management. © 2024 The Author(s). Abstract:Abstract The larval-pupal endoparasitoid Diachasmimorpha longicaudata (Ashmead, 1905) is considered one of the main biological control agents of fruit flies Ceratitis capitata Wiedemann (1824) and Anastrepha fraterculus Wiedemann (1830) in Central and South America. The application of pesticides for disease and insect-pest management in fruit species may have adverse effects on the parasitoid. The objective of this study was to evaluate the lethal and sublethal effects via residual contact of commercial pesticide formulations on D. longicaudata. The active ingredients thiamethoxam, indoxacarb, chlorpyrifos, deltamethrin, spinetoram, spinosad, phosmet, lambda-cyhalothrin, malathion, dimethoate, and methidationa showed high toxicity to adults (100% mortality) after 96 h and were classified as harmful (Class 4). In contrast, the formulations of azadirachtin (Agroneem 850 EC, Azact 2.4 EC, Azamax 12 EC, and Fitoneem 850 EC), chlorantraniliprole, bordeaux mixture, sulfur, lufenuron, lime sulphur, novalurom, and mancozeb were rated as innocuous (<10% mortality). In addition, the formulations azadirachtin did not reduce the parasitism and the emergence rate of the F0 generation, the same pesticides added to chlorantraniliprole, azadirachtin A+B (Agroneem 850 EC), and lufenuron did not cause reduction in parasitism and emergence rate of the F1 generation of D. longicaudata. The use of pyrethroids, organophosphates, spinosyns, oxadiazines, and neonicotinoids should be used with caution in IPM programs. While pesticides chlorantraniliprole, azadirachtin formulations, bordeaux mixture, lufenuron, lime sulphur, and mancozeb do not cause lethal and sublethal effects for D. longicaudata adults. The results of this study provide important information for use in integrated pest management programs for fruit fly management.

Abstract:Chemical pesticides are widely used to manage the population of arthropod pests. Their increasing use in agriculture has raised concerns about their harmful effects on nontarget organisms, particularly some beneficial insects such as parasitoid wasps. To assess the potential risk and ecological safety of chemical pesticides, it is necessary to understand their impacts on the physiology and behaviour of those important natural enemies of arthropod pests. Here, we applied the Drosophila parasitoid Leptopilina drosophilae as a study model to investigate the effects of sublethal doses of imidacloprid, a widely used neonicotinoid insecticide. Our results demonstrated the detrimental effects of imidacloprid on the host-searching behaviour of L. drosophilae females and the courtship behaviour of L. drosophilae males. Comparative transcriptome and functional analysis provided further insights into the potential mechanisms underlying the impaired behaviours, with the downregulated expression of certain chemoreception genes in both female and male exposed wasps. Our findings thus emphasize the importance of understanding the risks associated with the use of chemical pesticides and the need to develop more eco-friendly pest management strategies for a sustainable balance between chemical and biological control.
Effects of Sublethal Concentrations of Insecticides on Survival and Reproduction of Two Bactrocera Species (Diptera: Tephritidae)

Abstract:Abstract The melon fruit fly, Bactrocera cucurbitae (Coquillett) and the pumpkin fruit fly, Bactrocera tau (Walker) (Diptera: Tephritidae), are important invasive pests on Cucurbitaceous hosts. The acute toxicity of five insecticides to females of these two fruit fly species was bio-assayed by membrane method, and effects of their sublethal concentration on the survival, reproduction, and ovary development of females were evaluated in the laboratory. Results showed that based on the LC50 values, both B. cucurbitae and B. tau were the most susceptible to trichlorfon. After treatment with sublethal concentration (LC30) of trichlorfon, abamectin+β-cypermethrin, spinetoram, and lambda-cyhalothrin, the female survival days of the two Bactrocera species were significantly shortened compared with the control. Moreover, the fecundity of two Bactrocera species was remarkably decreased, after exposure to abamectin+β-cypermethrin and trichlorfon LC30. However, the sublethal concentration (LC30) of insecticides had no significant influence on the egg hatchability of the fruit flies. Furthermore, after treatment with abamectin+β-cypermethrin LC30, the ovary length, width, and egg load of B. cucurbitae were significantly lower than that of the control; however, only the ovarian length and egg load of B. tau were significantly decreased on the 16th and 20th day. In conclusion, abamectin+β-cypermethrin has an excellent insecticidal activity against B. cucurbitae and B. tau.

Abstract:Recent years have witnessed heightened scrutiny of the non-target sublethal effects of pesticides on behavioural and physiological traits of insects. Traditionally, attention has focused on investigating pesticides' primary modes of action, often overlooking the potential secondary mechanisms. This review brings forth the nuanced impacts of sublethal pesticide exposure on the immune system of target and non-target insect species. Pesticides, such as for example neonicotinoids, suppress immune response, while others, like certain organophosphates and some insect growth regulators (IGRs), appear to bolster immunocompetence under certain circumstances. Beyond their individual impacts, the synergic effects of pesticide mixtures on insect immunity are garnering increasing interest. This review thus summarizes recent advances in the immunomodulatory effects of pesticides, detailing both mechanisms and consequences of such interactions. The implications of these effects for ecosystem preservation and viability of beneficial organisms, such as pollinators and natural enemies of pests, are discussed. The review also considers further research directions on pesticide secondary modes of action and explores potential implications for integrated pest management (IPM) programs, as several model organisms studied are crop pest species. While current data provide an expansive overview of how insect innate immunity is modulated, concrete endpoints remain elusive requiring further research into pesticide secondary modes of actions.

Abstract:Simple Summary The small brown planthopper (SBPH) Laodelphax striatellus is an economically important pest in Asia, especially in China. Imidacloprid, a neonicotinoid insecticide, is commonly applied in rice fields to control the planthoppers. However, the widespread application of imidacloprid also has led to the development of resistance and to other potentially negative effects on crop protection. The sublethal effects of imidacloprid have been reported in many insects. Here, we investigated the potential effects of different sublethal concentrations of imidacloprid on SBPH and found that imidacloprid could affect the fecundity, apoptosis and virus transmission in the viruliferous SBPH. The results indicated that sublethal concentrations of imidacloprid may increase the fecundity of SBPH and the impact of insecticides on the transmission of plant viruses by insects should be considered when insecticides are applied to manage insect pests. Laodelphax striatellus damages plants directly through sucking plant sap and indirectly as a vector of rice stripe virus (RSV), resulting in serious losses of rice yield. It is one of the most destructive insects of rice in East Asia. Insecticides are primarily used for pest management, but the sublethal concentrations of insecticides may benefit several insects. The present research attempted to explore the effects of sublethal concentrations of imidacloprid on the fecundity, apoptosis and RSV transmission in the viruliferous SBPH. The results showed that the fecundity of SBPH was significantly increased after treatment with the LC10 dose of imidacloprid, while the LC30 dose of imidacloprid reduced the fecundity compared with the control. To further investigate the underlying mechanism of increased fecundity after exposure to the LC10 dose of imidacloprid, we examined the expression levels of vitellogenin (Vg), Vg receptor (VgR) and caspases in the ovaries of SBPH, and observed the apoptosis by terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase (TDT)-mediated dUTP-digoxigenin nick end labeling (TUNEL). qRT-PCR results indicated that the expression levels of Vg, VgR and four caspase genes were all significantly increased by the LC10 dose of imidacloprid, and TUNEL assays suggested that the frequency of apoptosis was significantly higher in the SBPH treated by the LC10 dose of imidacloprid, suggesting a potential correlation between the increased fecundity and the apoptosis of SBPH ovarioles. Additionally, the expression levels of RNA3 and capsid protein (CP) were both increased significantly by the LC10 dose of imidacloprid, whereas were decreased by the LC30 dose of imidacloprid compared to the control. Therefore, this study clarifies the mechanisms of sublethal effects of imidacloprid on viruliferous SBPH and could be used to optimize pest control strategies.
