Abstract:This study dealt with the effects of environmental factors on thermal comfort and sleep quality. Based on orthogonal experimental design method, chamber experiments were assigned to conduct nine groups of cases through the combinations of temperature (17°С, 20°С, 23°С), relative humidity (40%, 55%, 70%), and pre-sleep as well as pre-awakening illuminance (30 lux, 90 lux, 150 lux). In each case, environmental perceptions were evaluated and physiological measurements were recorded during the whole nights. After further analysis combining the subjective and objective results, it can be concluded that temperature is the main factor affecting sleep quality compared with relatively insignificant effects of relative humidity and illuminance. In addition, case E (20°С, 55%, 150 lux (pre-sleep illuminance), 30 lux (pre-awakening illuminance)) can be a proponent combination improving sleep quality subjectively and objectively among the nine cases. Especially, 20°С with the specific bedding system is better for sleep quality among all levels within investigated environmental factors. Meanwhile, the result of subjective sensations in thermal environment reveals the intimate relation between thermal comfort and sleep quality. Although illuminance was not found obviously to affect sleep in the setting experimental environment due to the insufficient sample size, it would not weaken the significance of light environment in the comprehensive sleep environment.

Abstract:People spend about one third of their lives sleeping. Sleep is essential for the recovery of the body from both physical and psychological fatigue suffered throughout the day, the refreshment of mind, and the restoration of energy for maintenance of bodily functions. Current thermal comfort theories and standards are mainly concerned with people in waking state. However, many problems regarding thermal environment are found within a few field surveys in bedrooms, pushing out the need to investigate thermal environment and thermal comfort for sleeping people. In this paper, the questions concerning the measurement and evaluation of human sleep quality, the correlation between thermal regulation system and sleep regulation, and the characteristics of night-time space cooling load etc. are answered. The evidences illustrating the effects of thermal parameters on human sleep quality are also provided, in an attempt to shed light on the thermal comfort requirements of sleeping people.

Abstract:Current thermal comfort theories and standards are mainly concerned with people in waking state. The effects of air temperature on sleep quality and thermal comfort of sleeping people were investigated in this study by experimenting on human subjects. Sleep quality was evaluated by subjective questionnaires performed in the morning as well as electroencephalogram (EEG) signals, which were continuously recorded during the all-night sleep period. Subjective assessments on thermal comfort were performed both before and after sleep. Analysis on EEG signals indicated that the subjects took longer time to fall asleep and experienced shorter period of slow wave sleep (SWS) when the room temperatures moderately deviated from neutral. Consistently, they reported poorer subjective sleep quality in such conditions. The returned subjective questionnaires on thermal comfort from subjects reflected that the thermal comfort temperature was higher in sleep compared with that in waking state. Their skin temperatures were increased with air temperature and fluctuated during the sleeping period. In view of the distinctive requirements from waking people, it makes sense to study the thermal comfort of sleeping people. The results also have practical implications on energy savings in bedrooms.

Abstract:Thermal factor is one of the crucial factors affecting human sleep. The purpose of this study is to explore the effects of combinations of indoor air temperature and bedding system on sleep thermal sensation and sleep quality and to provide new insights into the cognition of relationship between thermal environment and sleep quality. Sleep experiments were conducted in the climate chamber and the indoor air temperature was set as 16 degrees C, 18 degrees C, 20 degrees C, 22 degrees C, and 24 degrees C in five conditions. The bedding system was consistent across all temperature conditions. The sleep stage, heart rate and skin temperature of subjects were continuously monitored. Mean-while, the quilt coverage form was recorded by an infrared thermal imager. Under different temperature conditions, although the quilts were consistent, the subjects adjusted the coverage form to get close to thermal neutrality. The difference in bedding insulation was 1.32clo between the coolest condition and warmest condition. When the bedding system and indoor temperature matched to achieve thermal neutrality, the subjects had the highest sleep efficiency and the highest deep sleep proportion. The greater the degree of deviation from thermal neutrality, the more obvious the reduction of sleep efficiency and deep sleep proportion. The tendency of subjective evaluation in ease of falling asleep, calmness of sleep and sleep satisfaction was consistent with the change of objective parameters. It was suggested that when creating sleep thermal environment, the indoor temperature should not be considered as the single key parameter, the suitable matching of indoor temperature and bedding system should be pursued.

Abstract:The hot summer and cold winter zone is an important area in China, accommodated with huge population and occupying a great amount of the lands. Due to the local climate and long-term economic conditions, the adaptive thermal sensation of local residents and the thermal regulation behaviors have unique characteristics. The thermal regulation behaviors involve complicated dynamic features and many influencing factors. However, due to the limited experimental testing conditions, it is greatly lack of relevant studies on the characteristics of different thermal regulation behaviors and their influences on both indoor thermal environment and the thermal comfort in this zone. Aiming at this, taking the residential buildings in Hangzhou city as the main object, a large-scale questionnaire surveys and measurements were conducted. The characteristics of various types of thermal regulation behaviors and the annual indoor thermal environment are analyzed. The effects of each regulation behavior on the indoor thermal environment and the adaptive thermal comfort are revealed. Rectified adaptive coefficients for the actual situation of Hangzhou residents are proposed and it is proved that the modified values can be used to evaluate the adaptive thermal sensation of the local residents more precise than the original ones used in the National Standard GB/T 50,785–2012. Incorporating the modified adaptive coefficient λ into the APMV model, the potential impact of summer ventilation on thermal comfort is quantified. The research results can provide theoretical support for the energy saving-oriented indoor thermal comfort research in the region.

Abstract:Sleep is essential to help the body recover from both physical and psychological fatigue suffered throughout the day. Ambient temperature is one of the factors that affect sleep quality. There are relatively few researches focusing on the thermal comfort requirements of sleeping people. The design and operation of air-conditioning system in bedroom are usually based on the standards and criterions specified for office building when people are awake. The main objectives of this study are to find out the effect of indoor temperature on occupant’s sleep quality, and whether there is difference in thermal comfort requirement of sleeping people. Eighteen participants (9 males and 9 females) were recruited in the experiment. They slept in three thermal environments (with ambient temperature of 23oC, 26oC, and 30oC) repeatedly in balanced order during the summer season. The resistance of the covering materials including the clothing was estimated to be 1.8 clo. The participants filled out questionnaires on thermal comfort before and after sleep. They assessed their sleep quality after they get up. During sleep, the electroencephalograms (EEG) and skin temperature of the participants were continuously measured. The results show that the indoor temperature has a significant effect on sleep quality. At 26 oC, the relative power of the EEG ? was the highest, indicating a better sleep quality at this temperature. The neutral temperature is reported to be higher when people are sleeping than that for awaking. Therefore, it is needed to establish standards regarding thermal comfort specifically for sleeping environment. The skin temperatures of the participants were significantly affected by the indoor temperature; it increased with the indoor temperature. Moreover, their skin temperature changed significantly during the entire sleep period. Creating a transient thermal environment for the bedroom based on people’s physiological characteristics at different sleep stages may be benefit for improvement of sleep quality.

Abstract:Thermal comfort is one of the key factors affecting human sleep. This study aimed to provide new understandings on sleep thermal comfort in residential environments by investigating the characteristics of behavioral adjustments and exploring the relationship among indoor thermal environment, bed microclimate and sleep thermal comfort. Both online and field surveys were conducted in China. Two large-scale online questionnaire surveys were carried out in winter and summer, a total of 4127 valid samples were collected. The field study was conducted in 14 bedrooms and was divided into two periods in summer and winter, each period lasted for 2-3 weeks. The field study involved continuous monitoring of bedroom air temperature, bed temperature and daily collection of post-sleep questionnaires and collected 461 valid samples. Based on the collected data, people's adjustments of bedding systems in different indoor environments were analyzed systematically from several aspects, including the components on both the covering side and the underlying side, the coverage forms, the total thermal insulation of bedding systems. The use of two heating modes during sleep (space heating and bed heating) were investigated and the effects of regional and personal factors on the usage were explored. Under the influence of behavioral adjustments, thermal sensation during sleep was found to be weakly correlated with overnight bedroom air temperature, bed temperature was not correlated with overnight bedroom air temperature. A Heat Transfer Model for Sleep Quality Evaluation

Abstract:It is well known that the heat exchange mode between human body and environment during sleep is quite different from that during wakefulness; and while temperature has been identified as one of the important factors affecting sleep quality, the relation between human body's heat flow and sleep quality is rarely studied. This research comprehensively considered the distribution position of various thermal insulations (including hair, pajamas and bedding) outside the human body and their influence on the heat transfer process. On the basis of previous studies and heat balance equation, a model was constructed to evaluate the amount of heat transfer during sleep. A series of measured data were input into the new model and the previously proposed model separately, and reported good credibility in the current version. Linear fitting and paired sample t-test were used to analyze the relations between heat losses (sensible, latent and total) and percent of sleep periods. It is found, with the increase of heat loss, the duration of deep sleep was significantly shortened (p < 0.05) and light sleep was significantly grown (p < 0.05), which means that there is a certain mathematical relation between heat flow and objective sleep quality. This study has important implications for thermal environment design of bedroom and building energy conservation, and heat transfer has potential as a bridge between sleep quality and sleep thermal comfort in the future.

Abstract:The effect of the thermal environment on sleep quality has attracted considerable attention, as sleep forms one-third of human lifetime and the occupied space is largely constrained during sleep. With an increasing development of partial space regulation and task air conditioning systems and devices, thermal comfort demand concerning local thermal conditions has attracted more and more attention. In the present study, experiment was conducted and data mining technologies were performed to investigate correlations between local thermal conditions and whole body thermal comfort in sleeping state. The identification of local thermal condition included two steps: the first step was to clarify thermal sensation links between local and covered body, and the second step was to identify local thermal sensation inclination towards different thermal comfort levels. Thermal sensation correlations among local body parts and covered body were obtained. Back, face, and thigh were identified as three dominant linear-correlated local parts with weighting factors 0.488, 0.388, and 0.152, respectively; in addition, chest, arm, leg and foot were found as non-negligible local parts in the estimation of covered body thermal sensation. By dividing the sleeping human body into three parts as head, trunk and extremity, the proper local thermal sensations and their coupling relationships for whole body sleeping thermal comfort have been elaborated by three rules. The present study provides implications in sleeping thermal environment regulation in neutral to cold indoor conditions.

Abstract:Sleep thermal environment has a great effect on occupants’ sleep quality. The purpose of this study was to explore the relationships between sleep thermal environment parameters and sleep quality in winter and summer. The whole experiments involved indoor ambient temperatures (winter: 17 °C, 20 °C, 23 °C; summer: 23 °C, 26 °C, 29 °C) and relative humidity (RH; winter: 40%, 55%, 70%; summer: 40%, 60%, 80%). A total of 18 young subjects (23±2 years old) were divided into the two different season groups to experience the corresponding environmental conditions. Their subjective environmental perception and objective physiological signals were monitored. The results showed that thermal sensations at 20 °C in winter, as well as 26 °C in summer, were considered as the thermal neutral states. Humid sensation in winter before sleep was susceptible to SET*, while the middle value of SET* (32 °C) related to the middle indoor air temperature (26 °C) and air humidity (60%) before and after sleep could be the summer combination of neutral thermal environment. Furthermore, cold and wet environment in winter was found to seriously affect the deep sleep. In summer, mild temperature contributing to good sleep quality might weaken the effect of humidity on sleep. Through combining the sleep environmental perception result with contour line and regression analysis on objective sleep quality, the suggested values of thermal environment parameters for young adults (21–25 years old) were as follows: 20.3 °C and 56%RH in winter, as well as 26.1 °C and 52%RH in summer.

Abstract:Few studies have investigated the association between bedroom environment and sleep quality, especially in older adults during the winter months. In the present study, a field measurement was conducted in the bedrooms of 104 older adults, each for one week in Shanghai during the winter season. Their sleep quality was recorded with a wrist-worn sleep tracker and assessed with a questionnaire. Measurements from 507 person-nights were analyzed using the generalized linear mixed model after excluding unreliable data. The overnight means of bedroom temperature, relative humidity, and CO2 concentrations, which were continuously measured, ranged from 8 to 22 °C, 32 to 93%, and 430ppm to 3900ppm, respectively. The results indicated that relative humidity and CO2 concentration were pivotal factors significantly influencing sleep quality. Both low and high humidity were not conducive to sleep. Higher CO2 concentrations were associated with decreased sleep quality, particularly when combined with the low humidity. The sleep quality was less sensitive to bedroom temperature, probably because the older adults commonly used bed heating to maintain comfortable sleep microclimate. The present study indicates that increasing ventilation rate and avoidance of low/high humidity in the bedroom are important for maintaining sleep quality of older adults during winter.

Abstract:The purpose of this study is to investigate the thermal environment while sleeping through experiment. Twelve health volunteers were selected as subjects. The indoor thermal environment and bed climate were obtained via objective measurement, and the subjective thermal perceptions were collected by questionnaires. The results showed that thermal evaluations on face perceived comfort when exposed to the indoor temperature in the range of 11.3°C to 21.9°C; it was a range of 30.3°C to 32.5°C for a comfortable bed climate which directly affected the body trunk. This may because the bed cover allowed of an isolated high bed climate temperature, and facilitated a better thermal sensation under low temperature indoor environment. The results may contribute to a more preferable thermal design for civil building, and be beneficial for energy conservation.

Abstract:The human body is exposed to nonuniform thermal environment due to asymmetric bedding coverage of head and covered body. The purpose of the study is to investigate the thermal requirement difference of local body parts during sleep. Experiments were performed both in bed warming and non-bed warming conditions. Twelve healthy postgraduates were recruited as subjects. The thermal states on different local body parts of subjects were obtained via objective measurement and subjective questionnaires. The results showed that thermal comfort during sleep in winter was not in accordance with the thermal neutral state. In order to achieve overall thermal comfort condition, discrepant thermal sensation should be kept be-tween the head and covered body, besides, the disparity in skin temperature was 1.5°C and in TSV was 0.5 between posterior and lateral body part. The study has implications in the energy saving design of the coupled sleeping thermal environment in winter.

Abstract:Sleep is physically, physiologically, and psychologically affected by several factors. The present study mainly focused on the effects of the pre-sleep thermal environment on sleep quality. The physical heat transfer between body and thermal environment determines the thermal state and thermal sensation of a subject, thereby physiologically affecting human sleep. Chamber experiments were designed to construct three different pre-sleep environments, namely, cool, neutral, and warm, with corresponding air temperatures of 23, 26, and 29 degrees C, respectively. The environmental condition during sleep was equally set in the entire experiment (24 degrees C/50%). Physiological measurements used included EEG, EOG, and EMG recordings from lights off (23:00) to lights on (7:00) to stage sleep for further analysis and seven-point skin temperature measurement. The subjects were required to fill up questionnaires before and after sleep. Results indicated that a warm pre-sleep environment led to high total sleep time (TST) and sleep efficiency (SE) and low sleep onset latencies (SOLs) and number of awakenings (NOA). Meanwhile, a cool pre-sleep environment results in low TST and SE and high SOL, WASO, and NOA. With regard to sleep stage, more deep sleep (N3 stage) and REM sleep were discovered in subjects exposed to warm environment before sleep. Subjects who stayed in warm environment before sleep exhibited the highest scores with respect to ease of falling asleep, sleep satisfaction, and ease of awakening. Therefore, a neutral-warm thermal sensation and near-zero distal-proximal temperature gradient are the important indicators of low SOL. Furthermore, the inherent mechanism was discussed in the present study.

Abstract:Bed warming is an effective and energy-saving method that is commonly applied in cold weather sleep. However, both positive and negative effects on human thermal comfort arise due to improper thermal control. The current sleeping thermal environment situation in rural areas of Northwest China was obtained by field measurements in winter. The thermal requirements of the sleeping human body in bed warming conditions were experimentally investigated in twelve healthy volunteers. The key finding of the current work is that an appropriate skin temperature gradient between the two body parts (CFG) was beneficial to the overall thermal comfort. An elliptical PPD (predicted percent dissatisfied) model was proposed which revealed the joint effect of face and covered body thermal sensations on overall thermal dissatisfaction. The least thermal dissatisfied condition occurred when people perceived slightly cool on face and slightly warm on the covered body during sleep. The present study implies that indoor temperature should be fully considered in bed warming conditions.

Abstract:Indoor environment, in addition to many other factors, such as emotion and body condition, can disturb an individual's sleep. This paper aimed to determine the relationship between indoor environment and sleep quality based on subjective questionnaires and objective measurements. First, a massive online investigation was conducted in China to collect basic information, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) questionnaire, and information on sleep environment control method from respondents. The main qualitative conclusion from this investigation was that individuals have differing perceptions of the effects of environment on sleep quality. Sleep quality varies based on age and personal salary. Gender differences were also discussed in the online investigation. Men tended to have poorer sleep quality than women. To quantitatively explore the effects of indoor environment on sleep quality, a field study was conducted in university dormitories. The field study involved the measurement of various environmental and physiological parameters, and used subjective questionnaires before and after sleep. Preference for different environmental parameters relating to sleep quality were discussed. The most satisfactory operative temperature was found to be 24.2 °C, and subjects have a lower neutral temperature and a broader accepted temperature range during sleep.
