Abstract:More and more polymer membranes have been developed for biomedical applications in which an excellent hemocompatibility is the most important property being valued.Surface modification is an effective way to improve the blood compatibility of polymer membranes.New approaches based upon PC(phosphorylcholine) technology to improve the hemocompatibility of polymer membranes were reviewed.Physical methods such as blended modification and surface coating were adopted by researchers as well as chemical methods including surface grafting and semiimpenetrate polymer networks.In addition,grafting hydrophilic groups and sulfo-ammonium zwitterions to polymer surface were developed to improve surface hemocompatibility.
Zwitterionic Polymers As High-Performance Coatings for Hemoperfusion Adsorbents and Their Chemisorption of Protein-Bound Toxins Through Computational Simulations

Abstract:It remains a challenge for commercial hemoperfusion adsorbents to efficiently remove multiple protein-bound toxins in the clinical treatment of liver and kidney failure. Here, polystyrene divinylbenzene microspheres (PS-DVB) were surface-modified by poly(carboxybetaine methacrylate) (poly-CBMA) through controlled polymerization, named PCBMA. PS-DVB served as a supporting backbone and provided enormous specific surface, while a layer of the poly-CBMA aimed at efficiently removing various toxins and attaining better biocompatibility. After modification, the mesoporous analysis revealed a high specific surface area of 527 m2/g. More notably, compared with PS-DVB, PCBMA showed an 830%, 130%, and 26% increase in the adsorption capacity of p-cresol sulfate (PCS), indoleacetic acid (IAA), and bilirubin (BR), respectively, in the presence of 40 g/L bovine serum albumin. Further molecular dynamics simulations and DFT calculations showed that poly-CBMA exhibited stronger intermolecular forces for all three toxins. The hydrogen bonds formed between the negatively charged carboxylate ions from PCBMA contributed to its excellent adsorption performance. This study not only provides a new idea to study the adsorption mechanism of toxins by zwitterionic polymers but also demonstrates the promising application of microspheres modified by zwitterionic polymers in clinical hemoperfusion therapy.

Abstract:Superabsorbent polymers are new functional polymeric materials that can absorb and retain liquids thousands of times their masses. This paper reviews the synthesis and modification methods of different superabsorbent polymers, summarizes the processing methods for different forms of superabsorbent polymers, and organizes the applications and research progress of superabsorbent polymers in industrial, agricultural, and biomedical industries. Synthetic polymers like polyacrylic acid, polyacrylamide, polyacrylonitrile, and polyvinyl alcohol exhibit superior water absorption properties compared to natural polymers such as cellulose, chitosan, and starch, but they also do not degrade easily. Consequently, it is often necessary to modify synthetic polymers or graft superabsorbent functional groups onto natural polymers, and then crosslink them to balance the properties of material. Compared to the widely used superabsorbent nanoparticles, research on superabsorbent fibers and gels is on the rise, and they are particularly notable in biomedical fields like drug delivery, wound dressing, and tissue engineering.

Abstract:This comprehensive review examines the latest developments in improving the blood compatibility of hemoperfusion adsorbents. By leveraging advanced coating and modification techniques, including albumin-collodion, cellulose, hydrogel, and heparin coatings, notable enhancements in blood compatibility have been achieved across diverse adsorbent types, such as carbon-based, resin-based, and polysaccharide-based materials. Despite promising laboratory results, the intricate manufacturing processes and elevated costs present significant challenges for broad clinical application. Therefore, future endeavors should focus on cost-benefit analysis, large-scale production strategies, in-depth exploration of blood-material interactions, and innovative technologies to propel the development of safer and more effective blood purification therapies.

Abstract:Water pollution by organic and/or inorganic pollutants has gained considerable attention all over the world. In the past decades, adsorption has been proposed as one of the most effective and simplest approaches to remove pollutants from contaminated waters, and polymer-based adsorbents have been widely used as efficient adsorbents except for activated carbon. Here, we reviewed recent patents on preparation of polymeric adsorbents and their derivatives as well as their application in pollutants removal from waters. Here, we classify the polymer-based adsorbents as four types for review: polymeric porous adsorbents; their chemically modified derivatives, polymer-coated inorganic hybrid adsorbents, and polymeric chelating adsorbents. Some of the features on their preparation, properties, and applications were illustrated by case studies. The forthcoming development in the given field was also discussed. Abstract:Geopolymer is a porous inorganic material with a three-dimensional mesh structure, good mechanical properties, a simple preparation process (no sintering) and a low economic cost, and it is environmentally friendly. Geopolymer concrete has been widely used in the construction field, and many other studies have revealed that geopolymer will become one of the most promising inorganic materials with unique structure and properties. This paper provides a review of the development and current status of geopolymers and briefly explains the effects of material proportioning, experimental factors and activators on geopolymer performance. Because of the advantages of high specific surface area and high porosity, geopolymers could be used as adsorbent materials. This paper summarizes the research progresses of the adsorption of metal cations, anions, dyes, and gases by geopolymers, which emphasizes the geopolymer membranes in adsorption, and discusses the challenges and opportunities for the development of more efficient, sustainable and practical adsorption protocols.

Abstract:Blood purification is an essential part of biomedical engineering, as well as a rapidly developing field in medicine. Hemoperfusion, which physically separates impurities from blood using adsorbents, offers an effective method for blood purification. However, traditional hemoperfusion adsorbents suffer from various limitations, such as low adsorption capacity and poor hemocompatibility. In recent years, ordered porous materials (OPMs), as a new type of material, have been emerging in the research of blood purification. OPMs exhibit several unique properties that make them ideal candidates for blood purification adsorbents, including a regularly arranged, adjustable pore structure and high specific surface area. Researchers have developed and synthesized various types of OPMs and studied their applications in hemoperfusion, demonstrating their potential to outperform conventional adsorption materials. This review covers the synthesis and properties of OPMs, as well as their applications in hemoperfusion. The authors also discuss the potential of OPMs for future clinical applications in blood purification. Based on these discussions, it appears that OPMs show an exciting avenue for further research in the field of blood purification.

Abstract:<p>Adhesive hydrogels have broad applications in tissue adhesives, hemostatic agents, and biomedical sensors. Various bio-inspired glues and synthetic adhesives are clinically used as conventional hemostatic agents and auxiliary tools for wound closure. Medical adhesives are needed to effectively and quickly control bleeding, thereby reducing the risk of complications caused by severe blood loss. Medical sensors need to have excellent skin compliance, mechanical properties, sensitivity, and biological safety. This review focuses on recent progress in adhesive hydrogel systems, their structures, adhesion mechanisms, construction strategies, and emerging applications in the biomedical field.</p>

Abstract:Adsorption or enrichment has been an indispensable and important measure in biomedical engineering since it is promising in diagnosis and treatment of complex diseases. The ongoing development in this arena starves for exploration of outstanding adsorptive materials. As an excellent candidate for adsorption or enrichment carriers, carbon-based material has demonstrated unique superiority in biomedical arena owing to its integrated characteristics. Herein, we review the lasted advance in adsorptive carbon-based materials for biomedical application with emphasis on carbon nanotubes (CNTs)-based, graphene-based, and biomass/polymer-based ones. We begin with the classification of different carbon-based materials and elaborate the respective preparation approaches that are utilized to realize optimized microstructure and physicochemical property. Afterwards, we introduce the different applications of carbon-based materials in biomedical arena, including blood purification, enrichment of glycopeptide and phosphopeptide, and breath analysis. Finally, we present a concise summary and give an outlook of this arena.

Abstract:<p>Adsorption technology has been widely developed and employed for water and air pollution control. Conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs) emerge as the appropriate adsorbents candidate. To fulfill high capacity and good selectivity for the adsorption, strategies of flexible micropores design and functional group modification that facilitate the physical and chemical effect are considered desirable. The review firstly summarizes the advancements in structural studies of CMPs and the applications for contaminants adsorption from water and air. Further, the mechanisms involved in the remarkable capacity and selectivity of CMPs adsorbents are addressed. Finally, upcoming research efforts on materials design, adsorption principle, and resource recovery to overcome current practical bottlenecks are proposed.</p>

Abstract:Polymer brushes are long-chain macromolecules that are attached at one end to a solid surface, while the free-end is exposed to the surrounding medium. In recent years, the utilization of polymer brushes as adsorbents in addressing environmental issues, such as removal of heavy metal ions form aqueous solution, has aroused widespread interests. Unlike conventional adsorbents, polymer brushes can present abundant and highly accessible functional groups, which is highly beneficial for adsorptive removal of heavy metal ions in terms of capacity and kinetics. This review mainly focuses on recent advances in heavy metal ions removal from aqueous solution by various polymer brushes, which are classified according to the types of solid substrates used for grafting of polymer brushes such as carbon materials, silica, polymeric materials, magnetic particles, mineral materials, and biomass. It is evident from literatures that polymer brushes-based adsorbents have shown great potential for removal of heavy metal ions. Nevertheless, still more research work is required to develop polymer brushes with superior structure and property (e.g., density, thickness, and selective adsorption ability), and to seek scalable, low-cost, and green production approaches.

Abstract:Environmental pollution has been accelerated due to fast urbanization and industrialization, and thus hazardous contaminants removal and valuable metal recovery have become urgent. Adsorption has become a promising technology for water treatment because of its advantages of low-cost, good reusability, low energy consumption, high capacity and high selectivity. Particularly, radiation techniques including radiation induced graft copolymerization and radiation crosslinking have been found to be widely utilized to exploit adsorbents for water treatment. In this review, the current status and progress of adsorbents in environmental pollution in the past decade are summarized, including adsorbents (in form of particles, fiber and fabric, membrane, novel nanomaterials) synthesized by radiation induced graft copolymerization and hydrogel-based adsorbents fabricated by radiation crosslinking. Finally, further perspective on the development and challenge of adsorbents by radiation techniques is also suggested.

Abstract:Biomedical polymers have been extensively developed for promising applications in a lot of biomedical fields, such as therapeutic medicine delivery, disease detection and diagnosis, biosensing, regenerative medicine, and disease treatment. In this review, we summarize the most recent advances in the synthesis and application of biomedical polymers, and discuss the comprehensive understanding of their property-function relationship for corresponding biomedical applications. In particular, a few burgeoning bioactive polymers, such as peptide/biomembrane/microorganism/cell-based biomedical polymers, are also introduced and highlighted as the emerging biomaterials for cancer precision therapy. Furthermore, the foreseeable challenges and outlook of the development of more efficient, healthier and safer biomedical polymers are discussed. We wish this systemic and comprehensive review on highlighting frontier progress of biomedical polymers could inspire and promote new breakthrough in fundamental research and clinical translation.

Abstract:Environmental pollution, energy consumption and biotechnology have induced more and more public concerns. Problems imposed by these issues will circulate in the 21st century. Adsorption-based processes may lead to one of the most efficient routes for removal of toxic substances, energy storage and bio-applications. The fundamental and great challenge is developing highly efficient adsorbents. In this regard, ordered mesoporous materials (OMMs) may be the answer in the future. They possess intrinsic high specific surface areas, regular and tunable pore sizes, large pore volumes, as well as stable and interconnected frameworks with active pore surfaces for modification or functionalization. Such features meet the requirements as excellent adsorbents, not only providing huge interface and large space capable of accommodating capacious guest species, but also enabling the possibility of specific binding, enrichment and separation. As a result, these materials have been extensively studied as advanced adsorbents and hundreds of papers have been published since the millennium. In this Highlight, we will mainly summarize and outlook the development in pollution control, gas storage and bioadsorption by using OMMs as adsorbents.
All-in-One Porous Polymer Adsorbents with Excellent Environmental Chemosensory Responsivity, Visual Detectivity, Superfast Adsorption, and Easy Regeneration

Abstract:It remains a formidable challenge to construct advanced adsorbents with superb adsorption, environmental stimuli response, and real-time detection capability for efficiently treating contaminants from complex environmental systems. A novel class of an all-in-one microporous adsorbent that simultaneously has excellent environmental chemosensory responsivity, visual detectivity, superfast micropollutant adsorption, as well as easy regeneration is reported herein. The advanced microporous adsorbent discussed in this study presents a hairy nanospherical morphology composed of a hairy stimuli-responsive polymeric shell and a shell-assisted superadsorptive microporous core. The adsorbent not only exhibits a valuable capability of pollutant detection by visible fluorescence quenching, but can also remove organic micropollutants from polluted water with super-rapid speed (79%, 98%, and 100% of its equilibrium uptake in 7 s, 10 s, and 2 min, respectively) and excellent recyclability (>96%). More importantly, the adsorbent still shows unimpeded adsorption performance in the flow-through adsorption tests (15 mL min-1 ), indicating a very appealing application prospect.

Abstract:In the past decades polymeric adsorbents have been emerging as highly effective alternatives to activated carbons for pollutants removal and subsequent recovery from industrial effluents. More recently, the development of polymer-based hybrid adsorbents has opened up the new opportunities of their application in deep removal of inorganic pollutants like heavy metals from waters. The present review focuses on preparation of these polymeric-based adsorbents, their physicochemical properties, adsorption characteristics and mechanism, as well as their application in water purification.
