Abstract:This article studies the limiting spectral distributions of random birth-death Q matrices.Under the strictly stationary ergodic condition, we prove that the empirical spectral distribution converges weakly to a nonrandom probability distribution.Furthermore, in the situations without strictly stationary ergodic condition, we study a class of random birth-death Q matrices, corresponding to generalizations of the Beta-Hermite ensembles, and establish the existences as well as convolution formulations for their limiting spectral distributions.In particular, for the random birth-death Q matrices corresponding to the Beta-Hermite ensembles, the limiting spectral distribution is the convolution of the semi-circle law and Dirac measure δ-2.

Abstract:Many examples of exactly solvable birth and death processes, a typical stationary Markov chain, are presented together with the explicit expressions of the transition probabilities. They are derived by similarity transforming exactly solvable `matrix' quantum mechanics, which is recently proposed by Odake and the author. The ($q$-)Askey-scheme of hypergeometric orthogonal polynomials of a discrete variable and their dual polynomials play a central role. The most generic solvable birth/death rates are rational functions of $q^x$ ($x$ being the population) corresponding to the $q$-Racah polynomial.

Some Limit Theorems of Killed Brownian Motion

Abstract:In this paper, we prove some limit theorems for killed Brownian motion during its life time. The emphases are on quasi-stationarity and quasi-ergodicity and related problems. On one hand, using an eigen-function expansion for the transition density, we prove the existence and uniqueness of both quasi-stationary distribution (qsd) and mean ratio quasi-stationary distribution (mrqsd). The later is shown to be closely related to laws of large numbers (LLN) and to quasi-ergodicity. We further show that the mrqsd is the unique stationary distribution of a certain limiting ergodic diffusion process of the BM conditioned on not having been killed. We also show that a phase transition occurs from mrqsd to qsd. On the other hand, we study the large deviation behavior related to the above problems. A key observation is that the mrqsd is the unique minimum of certain large deviation rate function. We further prove that the limiting diffusion process also satisfies a large deviation principle with the rate function attaining its unique minimum at the mrqsd. These give interpretations of the mrqsd from different points of view, and establish some intrinsic connections among the above topics. Some general results concerning Yaglom limit, moment convergence and LLN are also obtained.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to give an explicit formula of the invariant distribution of a quasi-birth-and-death process in terms of the block entries of the transition probability matrix using a matrix-valued orthogonal polynomials approach. We will show that the invariant distribution can be computed using the squared norms of the corresponding matrix-valued orthogonal polynomials, no matter if they are or not diagonal matrices. We will give an example where the squared norms are not diagonal matrices, but nevertheless we can compute its invariant distribution.

Abstract:This paper studies the quasi-stationary distributions for a single death process (or downwardly skip-free process) with killing defined on the non-negative integers, corresponding to a non-conservative transition rate matrix. The set $\{1,2,3,\cdots\}$ constitutes an irreducible class and $0$ is an absorbing state. For the single death process with three kinds of killing term, we obtain the existence and uniqueness of the quasi-stationary distribution. Moreover, we derive the conditions for exponential convergence to the quasi-stationary distribution in the total variation norm. Our main approach is based on the Doob's $h$-transform, potential theory and probabilistic methods.

We first establish the sufficient condition to ensure the existence of a unique nonnegative solution of stochastic parabolic equations. Then the problem of blow-up solutions in mean L-q-norm, q 1, in a finite time is considered. The main aim in this article is to investigate the effect of time delay and stochastic term. A new result shows that the stochastic delayed term can induce singularities.

Abstract:We prove the normality of the limiting distribution of the coefficients of the q-derangement numbers of type B based on the formula of Foata and Han that contains a parameter z. Setting the parameter z to zero, we are led to the case of ordinary q-derangement numbers. For z=1, we obtain the normality of the limiting distribution of the coefficients of the usual q-derangement numbers of type B.

Abstract:A model for a class of age-dependent population dynamic system of fractional version with Hurst parameterh∈(1/2,1]is established. We prove the existence and uniqueness of a mild solution under some regularity and boundedness conditions on the coefficients. The proofs of our results combine techniques of fractional Brownian motion calculus. Ideas of the finite-dimensional approximation by the Galerkin method are used.

Abstract:A new structure with the special property that instantaneous state and catastrophes is imposed to ordinary birth-death processes is considered. Under the condition that the underlying birth-death process is non-zero-exit, the authors are able to give easy-checking existence criteria for such Markov processes. All the Q-processes and all the honest Q-processes are explicitly constructed. Recurrent and ergodicity properties for the honest Q-processes are investigated. Surprisingly, it can be proved that all the honest Q-processes are ergodicity without necessarily imposing any extra conditions. Ergodicity of such processes is also investigated and solved. Equilibrium distributions are established. The condition that the honest Q-processes is symmetric is given. Two examples are provided to illustrate our results.

Abstract:A birth and death process is a continuous-time Markov chain with the minimal state space $\mathbb N$, whose transition matrix is standard and whose density matrix is the given birth-death matrix. Birth and death process is unique if and only if $\infty$ is an entrance or natural. When $\infty$ is neither an entrance nor natural, there are two ways in the literature to obtain all birth and death processes. The first one is an analytic treatment proposed by Feller in 1959, and the second one is a probabilistic construction completed by Wang in 1958. In this paper we will give another way to study birth and death processes using the Ray-Knight compactification. This way has the advantage of both the analytic and probabilistic treatments above. By applying the Ray-Knight compactification, every birth and death process can be modified into a càdlàg Ray process on $\mathbb N\cup \{\infty\}\cup\{\partial\}$, which is either a Doob processes or a Feller $Q$-process. Every birth and death process in the second class has a modification that is a Feller process on $\mathbb N\cup\{\infty\}\cup \{\partial\}$. We will derive the expression of its infinitesimal generator, which explains its boundary behaviours at $\infty$. Furthermore, by utilizing transformations of killing and Ikeda-Nagasawa-Watanabe's piecing out, we will also provide a probabilistic construction for birth and death processes. This construction relies on a triple determining the resolvent matrix introduced by Wang and Yang in their work (1992')}.

Abstract:Quasi-birth-and-death (QBD) processes with infinite ``phase spaces'' can exhibit unusual and interesting behavior. One of the simplest examples of such a process is the two-node tandem Jackson network, with the ``phase'' giving the state of the first queue and the ``level'' giving the state of the second queue. In this paper, we undertake an extensive analysis of the properties of this QBD. In particular, we investigate the spectral properties of Neuts's R-matrix and show that the decay rate of the stationary distribution of the ``level'' process is not always equal to the convergence norm of R. In fact, we show that we can obtain any decay rate from a certain range by controlling only the transition structure at level zero, which is independent of R. We also consider the sequence of tandem queues that is constructed by restricting the waiting room of the first queue to some finite capacity, and then allowing this capacity to increase to infinity. We show that the decay rates for the finite truncations converge to a value, which is not necessarily the decay rate in the infinite waiting room case. Finally, we show that the probability that the process hits level n before level 0 given that it starts in level 1 decays at a rate which is not necessarily the same as the decay rate for the stationary distribution.

Abstract:The dynamical properties of a tumor cell growth system described by the logistic system with coupling between non-Gaussian and Gaussian noise terms are investigated. The effects of the nonextensive index q on the stationary properties and the transient properties are discussed, respectively. The results show that the nonextensive index q can induce the tumor cell numbers to decrease greatly in the case of q > 1. Moreover, the switch from the steady stable state to the extinct state is speeded up as the increases of q, and the tumor cell numbers can be more obviously restrained for a large value of q. The numerical results are found to be in basic agreement with the theoretical predictions.

Abstract:We further study the kinetic behavior of the exchange-driven growth with birth and death for the case of birth rate kernel being less than that of death based on the mean-field theory. The symmetric exchange rate kernel is K(k,j) = K-1(k,j) = Ikj(v), and the birth and death rates are proportional to the aggregate's size. The long time asymptotic behavior of the aggregate size distribution a(k)(t) is found to obey a much unusual scaling law with an exponentially growing scaling function Phi(x) = exp(x).

Abstract:Threshold values in population dynamics can be formulated as spectral bounds of matrices, determining the dichotomy of population persistence and extinction. For a square matrix $\mu A + Q$, where $A$ is a quasi-positive matrix describing population dispersal among patches in a heterogeneous environment and $Q$ is a diagonal matrix encoding within-patch population dynamics, the monotonicy of its spectral bound with respect to dispersal speed/coupling strength/travel frequency $\mu$ is established via two methods. The first method is an analytic derivation utilizing a graph-theoretic approach based on Kirchhoff's Matrix-Tree Theorem; the second method employs Collatz-Wielandt formula from matrix theory and complex analysis arguments. It turns out that our established result is a slightly strengthen version of Karlin-Altenberg's Theorem, which has previously been discovered independently while investigating reduction principle in evolution biology and evolution dispersal in patchy landscapes. Nevertheless, our result provides a new and effective approach in stability analysis of complex biological systems in a heterogeneous environment. We illustrate this by applying our result to well-known ecological models of single species, predator-prey and competition, and an epidemiological model of susceptible-infected-susceptible (SIS) type. We successfully solve some open problems in the literature of population dynamics.

On the cycle maximum of birth-death processes and networks of queues

Abstract:This paper considers the cycle maximum in birth-death processes as a stepping stone to characterisation of the cycle maximum in single queues and open Kelly-Whittle networks of queues. For positive recurrent birth-death processes we show that the sequence of sample maxima is stochastically compact. For transient birth-death processes we show that the sequence of sample maxima conditioned on the maximum being finite is stochastically compact. We show that the Markov chain recording the total number of customers in a Kelly-Whittle network is a birth-death process with birth and death rates determined by the normalising constants in a suitably defined sequence of closed networks. Explicit or asymptotic expressions for these normalising constants allow asymptotic evaluation of the birth and death rates, which, in turn, allows characterisation of the cycle maximum in a single busy cycle, and convergence of the sequence of sample maxima for Kelly-Whittle networks of queues.

Abstract:We consider an irreducible positive-recurrent discrete-time Markov process on the state space X=Z+M×J, where Z+ is the set of non-negative integers and J={1,2,...,n}. The number of states in J may be either finite or infinite. We assume that the process is a homogeneous quasi-birth-and-death process (QBD). It means that the one-step transition probability between non-boundary states (k,i) and (n,j) may depend on i,j, and n−k but not on the specific values of k and n. It is shown that the stationary probability vector of the process is expressed through square matrices of order n, which are the minimal non-negative solutions to nonlinear matrix equations.

Abstract:Consider the product of m independent n -by- n Ginibre matrices and their inverses, where , p is the number of Ginibre matrices, and q is the number of inverses of Ginibre matrices. The maximum absolute value of the eigenvalues of the product matrices is known as the spectral radius. In this paper, we explore the limiting spectral radii of the product matrices as n tends to infinity and m varies with n . Specifically, when is a fixed integer, we demonstrate that the limiting spectral radii display a transition phenomenon when the limit of p / n changes from zero to infinity. When , the limiting spectral radii for Ginibre matrices have been obtained by Jiang and Qi [J Theor Probab 30: 326–364, 2017]. When q diverges to infinity as n approaches infinity, we prove that the logarithmic spectral radii exhibit a normal limit, which reduces to the limiting distribution for spectral radii for the spherical ensemble obtained by Chang et al. [J Math Anal Appl 461: 1165–1176, 2018] when .
