Investigation and analysis of female college students' losing-weight behaviors and their cognitive status

Abstract:Objective To know female college students' cognitive status of obesity and weight loss and their losing-weight behaviors, so as to provide scientific guidance for their scientific and healthy weight loss.Methods A questionnair survey was conducted among 300 female college students from freshmen to juniors of one university in Xi' an selected by stratified sampling and cluster sampling.The main contents of the questionnaire mainly included cognition on obesity, weight loss knowledge, practice of losing-weight, effect of losing-weight and adverse reactions of losing-weight.Results Among the 300 female college students, 30.39%were underweight and 66.78% had standard body weight.Most of the female students' expectation on their body mass index ( BMI) was smaller than actual BMI, and their cognition on knowledge of weight loss was relatively one-sided.The actual average BMI and the expected average BMI was 19.53 ±1.97kg/m2 and 17.44 ±1.42 kg/m2, respectively, and there was significant difference between them (t=14.907,P<0.001).Significant difference was found between actual BMI distribution and the expected BMI distribution (χ2 =152.205,P<0.001).Among the subjects 53.36% had tried to lose weight, and the main ways included adjusting dietary (60.26%), going on a diet (19.21%) and exercising (4.64%). Among thefemale college students undergoing losing-weight, 56.95% had adverse reactions in the process of weight loss.Conclusion College female studentsare blind to practice weight loss with misperception of their body weight and body size.Hence, college and society should strengthen the propaganda on obesity knowledge and guidance for weight loss for preventing blind losing weight.
