Study on the correlation between sleep quality and postpartum depression

Abstract:Objective To explore the correlation between sleep quality and postpartum depression.Methods A total of 565 women giving birth to their babies in Maternal and Child Health Care Hospital of Haidian District in Beijing from January to April in 2013 were selected,and 376 women of them completed postpartum follow-up at 42 days after delivery.Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) and Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PQSI) were used to evaluate maternal depression and sleep.SPSS 18.0 software was used to conduct statistical analysis.Results Among 565 women at 1-3 days after delivery,the positive rate of depression was 25.1%.Among 376 women at 42 days after delivery,the positive rate of depression was 19.9%.Age,negative life events during pregnancy,and sleep disorder were main influencing factors of maternal depression at 1-3 days after delivery;maternal educational level,preterm birth,and sleep disorder were main influencing factors of maternal depression at 42 days after delivery.Conclusion The impact of poor sleep quality on maternal emotion continues the whole course of puerperium,which deserves further attention.
