Abstract:In terms of the surveillance of ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP), there have been several disadvantages all the time, including the lack of objectiveness in the standard of diagnosis, limited comparability, low attribution of mortality and the difficulty of data collection. In order to overcome these disadvantages, a new surveillance definition, ventilator-associated events (VAE), was proposed by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of USA to replace long-term used VAP in Jan.2013.Objective and quantifiable criteria are used by the new VAEs surveillance definition algorithm in order to predict patient's adverse outcome accurately and automatically. Therefore, it can enhance the reliability and efficiency of the surveillance. However, there are also some shortcomings in VAE, such as uncertainty in the surveillance among neonates and children, poor predictability of VAP and lack of evidence for prevention strategies. What's more, the surveillance is susceptible to artificial factors. Moreover, the combination of the prevention strategies of VAE with the established ones of VAP needs further investigation.
