A multicenter study on effects of interventions to hand hygiene compliance of health care workers in neonatal wards

Abstract:OBJECTIVE To verify the effects of multi-mode interventions to hand hygiene compliance of the health care workers in neonatal wards through multicenter study .METHODS Totally 5 neonatal wards extracted from 5 hospitals of 3 provinces were enrolled in the study .On the basis of the investigation method of hand hygiene com-pliance recommended by the WHO ,a survey of hand hygiene compliance of the health care workers was conducted by using direct observation method ;the basic situation of the hand hygiene was investigated from Oct 2013 to Mar 2014 (before the intervention) ,and the interventions to the hand hygiene were taken from Apr 2014 to Sep 2014 ( after the intervention ) .The change of the hand hygiene compliance was observed and compared before and after the multi-mode interventions were taken .RESULTS The hand hygiene compliance of the health care workers was increased from 76 .62% before the intervention to 82 .03% after the intervention ,with significant difference (χ2 =14 .921 ,P<0 .01) .The hand hygiene compliance of the doctors ,nurses ,and cleaning staff was significantly im-proved (P<0 .05) .The hand hygiene compliance was improved more significantly before the clean or aseptic oper-ation than before the intervention ,with significant difference (P<0 .01) .The hand hygiene compliance of prov-ince A was significantly improved after the intervention (P<0 .01) .CONCLUSION The multi-mode interventions may achieve significant effect on improvement of hand hygiene compliance of the health care workers in the neo-natal w ards .
