Analysis on burden of hospitalization expense of patients with catastrophic illness under New Rural Cooperative Medical Scheme in poverty counties of Lüliang mountainous area

Abstract:Objective:To understand the hospitalization medical expense burden of patients with catastrophic illness in four national poverty counties of Lüliang mountainous area,and to provide a basis for making reasonable medical aid policies and reduce personal medical expense burden.Methods:A total of 70 011 reimbursement details of 42 532 patients were collected from four poverty counties in 2015. Descriptive analysis included the annual per capita hospitalization expense burden of patients,the annual per capita hospitalization expense burden of patients with catastrophic illness,and the total hospitalization expense burden of patients with catastrophic illness covered by the New Rural Cooperative Medical Scheme(NRCMS) in the study areas.Results:The patients with catastrophic illness accounted for 48.30% of hospitalized patients covered by NRCMS. The total per capita hospitalization expense burden of patients with catastrophic illness(14 194.55 Yuan) were higher than that of the patients covered by NRCMS(9 963.86 Yuan). The total per capita hospitalization expense burden of patients with catastrophic illness was almost twice the hospitalization expense that only due to catastrophic illness.Conclusion:A high proportion of patients with catastrophic illness is found in the NRCMS coverage,who are often complicated with other diseases and bear a heavy burden of hospitalization medical expense.
